Laverne Cox got censored at the Emmys for saying “effing” and someone else got censored for saying “WAP.” The censorship choices Disney made last night were not good. [Just Jared]

After watching a lot of British Television since March, I’ve gotten used to swearing being normalized. Disney needs to get a grip. Intelligent articulate people swear and to pretend others wise infantile. It’s well past time America grows up and that includes eschewing Disney/Puritan standards of behavior.
especially since they don’t seem to have a problem with all kinds of actual and implied violence being shown.
bludgeon/kill/maim/assault someone? A-OK!
Bad word?! *clutches pearls* Won’t someone think of the CHILDREN?!!!
I don’t think children will kill someone just because they saw it on tv or in a movie. But they WILL pick up swear words. The same reason Disney banned smoking in their films – because it’s something that kids will copy. I don’t really think “effing” is that bad a word, but I understand the reason for the edit.
They might not actually kill someone but model learning works with violent behavior just as well as it does with smoking. And I for one have no problem with children picking up swear words. They will also learn the context and when not to use them.
@Faithmobile. I don’t think swearing is that big a deal and especially not substitutes for swearwords (and like you being an anglophile/watching a lot of British TV since … forever has probably normalized it even more. Obviously there’s a time and a place. I’m not effing and jeffing at work or in front of people that I don’t know. There’s a time and a place and this was an evening program so kids young enough to mindlessly repeat words without context shouldn’t be watching. Yet US shows and movies have no issue with gratuitous violence, especially towards women, and that’s OK? @Mrs,Krabapple, with all due respect, don’t you think that it’s more harmful for kids to normalize violence? They (hopefully) probably won’t go out and kill someone but they may either become desensitized toward violence or become unduly afraid of people who don’t look like them (if they are white) since it is often POC who are depicted as perpetrating the violence?
Oh, brother.
How absurd. She looked so gorgeous and glam. And I loveD Gabrielle and Dwayne’s bit.!
We can’t lose all decency. I don’t mind this. Some children do stay up to watch and not everyone (adult or not…) swears or wants to swear or hear it ALL the time. It’s fine.
Yeah – I mean… I don’t use that word in front of my kids. Or, in general really.
It’s good to reevaluate ‘decency’ and question whose standards are being pushed though. Some of the same people concerned about society losing all decency over terms like ‘effing’ mysteriously have no problem with dehumanizing slurs used against certain groups of people without their consent. They’ll even insist that their rights are being violated if the violence behind those slurs is criticized.
Ok….i NEED a Kaiser once-a-month astrology “observations” blog now. Not even into astrology, but omg she makes it fun and interesting!
Please consider donating to NARAL and Planned Parenthood’s PAC, as well as your favorite Democratic Senatorial candidates. We need everyone to go full tilt in the face of these terrible anti-womyn and anti-reproductive health politicians.
Yes, yes!
I mean, the censoring was part ABC, but also just trying to adhere to whatever standards network TV has for language. I’ve been an award show lover since I was very little and my parents would make special exceptions for me to stay up late and watch them. I don’t think cursing, and especially faux-cursing, is a big deal, but at the same time I get it and don’t have a problem with the censoring.
I don’t curse much at all in my day-to-day life (as an anxious, perfectionist kid I was conscious to never say bad words in front of my parents and it just stuck) and I honestly prefer when it’s not used excessively in the stuff I watch.
