There’s a special election in Georgia this year for a Senate seat currently being filled by Kelly Loeffler. Loeffler is the Trump Blonde and millionaire appointed to the Senate seat by Gov. Brian Kemp last year. The special election is a primary and general election all in one, a free-for-all with 21 candidates running, including Loeffler. She really wants to retain the seat, and she thinks the best way to do that is by touting her 100% Trump voting record. She thinks Georgia voters want to elect someone “more conservative than Attila the Hun.” Which is why this ad happened:

People do not understand history and it’s such a problem in this country. I used to love history and I still love to bury myself in a well-written historical book. The idea that this Trumpian Treason B is comparing herself to Attila the Hun AND making ads talking about “eliminating the liberal scribes”? Jesus H. And I’m left to wonder if that kind of sh-t would work better in, say, Alabama or Mississippi. Georgia trends purple with each new election cycle. I would love to see this POS thrown out.
Loeffler is also one of the senators accused (rightly) of insider trading at the start of the pandemic. The Senate Ethics oversight dismissed the investigation but that was merely a formality. She was profiting from her insider knowledge of the virus.

Her husband is the President of the NYSE, or something, and she made the largest stock transaction in her portfolio history after her February meeting about COVID…to invest in PPE and virtual meeting software, IIRC.

Canadian here. Can someone briefly explain to me what the differences are between the House of Representatives, Governors and Senators? How can a governor appoint a Senator?
US politics is very different from Canadian… we have Members of Legislative Assembly for Provincial government and Members of Parliament for federal government…. and our Prime Minister is decided by popular vote (the leader of the party that wins most of the seats in the parliamentary elections) I will never ever understand the electoral college in the States.
Congress is the legislative branch of the US government. It is made up of the House, whose reps are distributed based on population across the states, and the Senate, which balances it by having two representatives from each state. Reps are voted every two years, senators serve six.
Governors control executive function of states and are voted in. This is because America is a union of nation states, necessary because some of our states like California are literally larger and more populated than some countries. (Canada actually has ~two million people less than California, if you’re curious.) It’s why you hear about states rights a lot – where their power begins and ends in comparison to the federal government. The amount of power a governor wields is highly dependent on the state. Governors can fill some seats in order to make certain a rep’s seat is filled temporarily up to an election in lieu of running a sudden special election. They don’t have that power outside of special circumstances like death or resignation.

The answer is “depends on the legal matter.” Both are important, and in this case, governors are being pushed to the forefront because we’re seeing the federal government become corrupted and breaking down. Which is…actually exactly why states rights exist.
State governors and legislature can have significant impact on things like voting districts, voting law, minimum wage, economic regulation, criminal pardons/rights, executive orders and budgeting, etc. They can determine things like whether a federal program initiative will be accepted or rejected. Senators primarily impact things on a national level, but as their legislation can strongly influence citizens and state laws, and particularly if it gets into the bones of who has the final say on how a law is implemented. The big issue we have is that whoever controls the Senate has the final say on what legislature makes it to the executive veto stage. They also determine and approve Supreme Court and other high level federal positions that need filled, which is the problem we have today. The republican control of the senate has been a stranglehold in progressive legislature because they’re determined to grasp power at any cost. It’s not a good situation.
I don’t know why she thinks this is going to work. She’s disliked. Most know she’s a phony. She’s called Insider Trader Barbie. Her WNBA team wants her removed as owner. She’s aligned herself with the QAnon batshit crazy, racist candidate. I mean…she may be disliked more than Karen Handle and that’s saying something.
I loved when the WNBA team she owns had Vote for Warnock (her opponent) on their shirts! She really should have been removed after that stock debacle but it just seems that openly doing wrong/illegal things are fine (at least until it’s a Democrat)
