Tommy Lee drank two gallons of vodka a day before rehab, would put a drop of juice in it

Tommy Lee did an interview with Lyndsey Parker of Yahoo Entertainment. It’s 40 minutes long and I swear I watched the whole thing. It wasn’t that Tommy was particularly fascinating, I just liked how down-to-earth and knowledgeable the interviewer, Lyndsey, was about his music and the industry. She was a fan but she wasn’t gushing over him and she asked smart questions. Tommy said he’s been sober a year, but it took him over a half an hour to talk about it and it wasn’t until Lyndsey asked him a direct question about his sobriety. She really got him to open up. You could tell that Tommy still romanticizes drinking and partying because he talked about how awesome it was to be famous in the 80s before cell phones could bust you. This was in context of the film The Dirt, about the rise of Motley Crue (it’s been on Netflix for a while, I really enjoyed it). Machine Gun Kelly played Tommy in that movie. Tommy had nothing but praise for the filmmakers and particularly for MGK, whom he’d known for a couple of years before Machine Gun Kelly played him. He said that MGK took drum lessons for months and worked with him to get his mannerisms right.

The quotes that got me interested in this video were run by Page Six, and were about Tommy’s horribly excessive drinking. He also talked about people telling him not to get “political” and how he finds it frustrating to read the comments. I’m not going to say this video is worth watching, but I don’t feel like I wasted my time either. Tommy is promoting his solo album, Andro, which he doesn’t sing on at all. He uses all guest singers. Here’s some of what he said:

On not reading the comments
I typically don’t read comments. I did this song with Post Malone and Tyla Yaweh and it’s called Tommy Lee, it’s super rap. [My manager told me to read the comments] The first thing I see is some dude going ‘it doesn’t seem like Motley Crue.’ That’s why I don’t read comments. How heavy is that rock you’re living under?

On people telling him to stay out of politics
One that I see constantly, which is the most unintelligent answer, typical and predictable. ‘Hey you should stick to drums dude, stay out of politics.’ Because I’m a drummer does that mean I don’t have an opinion? I can’t say what is happening now is not f’ing mad? ‘Just stick to drums dude.’ You know what, ‘go f-ck yourself.’

I do understand how people would want you to keep that stuff separate. It really bums people out.

On why he quit drinking a year ago
I’ve been sober for 4 years [before]. I’ve been on and off for a time. I go through these phases. This particular instance I had been home. Idle time, not touring, I just enjoy being home. I would just float around and just f’ing drink. I didn’t notice it until towards the end. I was drinking out of boredom. I would wake up and build all vodka and just a little eyedropper of cranberry or lemonade. I was drinking two gallons, the big handles, a day. Going to get a full checkup. The doctor’s like ‘your liver’s fine, you’re super healthy. What are you made of?’

I just realized like ‘woah dude, you’re drinking enough to die.’ It wasn’t even phasing me. I just became immune to it and realized [it] was a lot.

“Was your wife concerned to see you drinking that kind of volume?”
Concerned is probably the right word. She was like ‘baby, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody drink that much. You’re kind of scaring me.’ Not scaring as in like violent, just ‘you’re scaring me like are you going to wake up?’

She was definitely concerned and [that] obviously helped in my decision [to go to rehab]. I bailed for over a month.

“How are you still alive?”
I must have a horseshoe stuck in my butt. Somebody is obviously looking out for me.

That was great to watch because Lyndsey asked the right questions and is clearly very good at her job. I’m pretty sure that it wasn’t publicized that he went to rehab because she said it was news to her. Plus she knew to ask him about his wife. Tommy, 58, married Instagram influencer Brittany Furlan, now 34, last year. I wish he would have sounded more serious about his sobriety. He drank so much but just blew off how serious it could be. This kind of story just brings it home that it’s super risky to go back to drinking, even if you have years off. It’s not something you can just pick up again because you’re just taking your misery back as they say in AA.

Oh and Lyndsey tried to get Tommy to admit that he’s the giraffe on The Masked Singer but he swore up and down that he’s not. I don’t watch that show but she was convinced.

Here’s that video.

    Ahhh the Crue…
I saw them a couple of times in the 80’s with my daughters. Tommy Lee is an absolute BEAST on the drums. They were damned good then. Dr. Feelgood and Home Sweet Home always bring back those days.
Lots and LOTS of debauchery at those shows so it wasn’t the place to be if you were a pearl clutcher.
Good times. Glad he’s doing well.

  2. grabbyhands says:

He was ridiculously handsome back in the day before all the partying started to show in his face.

I’ll give him this – at least he doesn’t seem to be out there whining all the time about how grunge music ruined his life like Vince Neil does.

OMG, I feel soooooooo OLD. I was surprised with this interview. And he is right, he can have an opinion even is he was a rocker. Good on him for being sober. I wish him well and that he continues to stay clean. Rock on TL.

Crue back in their day were huge!
Huge arenas, touring endlessly for years and constant enormous amounts of drug use.
HTF either Sixx or Lee are still standing is a mystery.

Nikki Sixx has written books re: sobriety. He is very well spoken on his struggles.
Tommy Lee is a jackass to blow off his level of abuse to his body, it’s an insult to anyone fighting thru health concerns. Of course, no one expects Tommy to smarten up.

And, yeah Tommy Lee was damn good looking in his youth and he is a strong talent as a drummer.

Vince is still a low rent David Lee Roth. There, feels good to say that.

      @SJ Knows
I remember an interview Sixx did where he said he had actually died, DIED, with a needle stuck in his arm when he was found and even THAT wasn’t enough to get him into rehab. He went out and got high the same day he was released from the hospital!!!!!
He has someone looking after him for sure

I agree, when I look at some of the seemingly innocuous things that have levelled stronger men, I’m dumbfounded that he’s made it this far. I dont really see how his comments are insulting to others though; his health issues (or lack thereof…) are his own and it doesn’t seem like he implies anywhere that this is a model way to live.

You’ve just reminded me that I still haven’t watched The Dirt even though it’s been on my watchlist since it came out. Looks like I need to step away from Masterchef Australia for a night and enjoy this.

I was more of a Tears for Fears girl than a Motley Crue one, lol, but it was hard to escape noticing their presence. It is alarming how casual he seems about his on and off sobriety…but maybe without real health problems his brain just won’t let him be totally abstinent.

    I love his political posting.

As a daughter of alcoholics, it raises the hairs on the back of my neck anytime I hear an addict minimize problem drinking or say that they can handle a drink or two and be fine. In my experience (limited to my own family but many, many times), this has always ended up in a spectacular fall off the wagon. I don’t think anyone drinks 2 handles of vodka a day solely out of boredom and the way he’s minimizing the reason for his drinking makes me scared for him.

The Crue were my fav band from the time I was 6 years old. I loved them and still have a whole VHS tape of specials, shows and stuff I recorded off the TV. Tommy Lee is talented. He can play many instruments and comes from a musical background but he’s an immature jackass. Nikki Sixx is a very strong voice about addiction now that he’s sober and I think he’s an advocate for still enjoying life without booze and drugs. It’s like Tommy thinks it’s a bummer he’s sober or some shit. He’ll go back to it I’m sure with that attitude.

That being said check out the Maybe it’s Time vid on YouTube by Sixx AM and artists for recovery.

I don’t believe anyone can drink 2 gallons of vodka in a day & not die of alcohol poisoning on the spot unless he’s vomiting or spilling most of it.
2 gallons is 8 quarts. Blood alcohol content above 0.3 % can be lethal and 2 gallons a day way over that.

    • Kebbie says:

I’m confused by his claim, is vodka even sold by the gallon? Isn’t a “handle” 1.75 liters?

Two handles would be 100 oz of vodka. Two gallons would be 256 oz.

Unless I’m wrong and they do sell vodka by the gallon somewhere. I’ve never seen it though.

If you are doing meth or coke to I think it can be done.

    • kliving says:

This. I’m doing a fitness challenge and part of it is drinking a gallon of water a day. It takes commitment to drink that much WATER, no way could he put that much vodka back.

I remember the episode of MTV Cribs where it was revealed that Tommy Lee had a yellow faux fur “Big Bird” wall in his home.
