We’ve known for months that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would eventually launch their charitable foundation, and we knew the name too: Archewell, pronounced ark-E-well. I was kind of hoping that with the pandemic, they would have a lot of time to rework everything, including the name. We’ve heard various vague updates though, and they never doubted the name. Now… they’ve launched the website for Archewell.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have launched a new website for their Archewell organisation, inviting readers to sign up for updates. Prince Harry and Meghan’s philanthropic body has been up and running for some months, HELLO! understands, but a landing page for its website only went live Tuesday.
On a neutral taupe background, the dictionary definitions for the words Arche and Well are laid out, hinting at what the couple have planned for their not-for-profit foundation. It reads: “Arche…Greek word meaning ‘source of action’. Well… a plentiful source or supply; a place we go to dig deep.”
The site also offers an option to tick to receive emails about Archewell’s activities and initiatives, and gives a Beverly Hills postal address as well as an email address for contact. The Duke and Duchess, who have been living in California since March this year, filed paperwork to register the organisation the same month.
Yeah, it’s not a lot so far. It basically looks like they might do some kind of newsletter, but I bet they’ll just do email blasts every now and then. I guess this is the big foundation launch in a pandemic! No big launch event, no big fundraiser, just Harry and Meghan quietly making their site live. It feels like they’ll say “all of these Zoom calls we’ve been doing, all of these issues we’re discussing, all of this is Archewell.”

I think we’ll have more than a newsletter. Well we might but I do think we’ll get a proper site. This is just to hype people up (a tactic used by a lot of people/companies when launching new websites/products)
I think this will help to consolidate their appearances and such for now too. Like you’ll get an email with a list of their upcoming appearances over the next two weeks, without having to search on twitter for it or whatever.
Oh that’s a good idea! I think they might also have a weekly/bi-weekly newsletter with a summary and description of what they’re doing and who they’re working with. Sort of like their own media articles.

This site isn’t far from where I live (and a frequent area I went to growing up blocks away from it). It’s between Sak’s and Rodeo Dr, on Wilshire, and it’s actually in Beverly Hills, not LA I’ll drive by and scope it out later or tomorrow.

I pronounce it arch-well. Ark-well does have an awkward mouthfeel.
I keep thinking “Arsh-well” or “ArCH-well”. I mentally say it at least twice every time I see it.

IMO it sounds a bit awkward…
I also was pronouncing it arshwell, but now I understand, the “ch” takes a hard “k” sound, as in archetype. As a big fan of Jungian psychology, I can work with that!

First up on Google were a bunch of daily mail links which I didn’t click. I couldn’t find it till I actually typed in Archewell.com then their page came up and I signed up!! The other outlets are cackling there is some big mistake and folks are being re-directed to something, but I didn’t follow the story cause I refuse to click on their links. I’ll wait for someone here to tell the story, THEN I’ll research to confirm if it’s true or not, but I won’t click their links, I’ll let the professionals do that

I’m sure more is coming. They probably got all of their copyright and trademarks in order and wanted to get the page up as a placeholder and to collect emails and web traffic data of who visits and from what countries.
I love a couple of things about this.
Neutral colors, no blinding blinking graphics, no moving parts. It’s not “busy just to be busy.”
But also…
Nowhere on that launch page are the words “Duke and Duchess of Sussex” “Their Royal Highnesses” “Prince” etc. This is their own product and does not rely on their titles. They’ve floated the name Archewell, they’ve got name recognition on their own that carries it.

Yeah, I love that about the page also. You know if they had put any of that information on it, that’s all we would hear tomorrow. As it stands, I’m sure they will find something dumb to complain about. It’s great that they just dropped it so low key like, these two are just stealth with their simplicity. If they were still apart of the firm and doing anything like this, it would have been leaked weeks ago and picked apart for whatever stupid reasons.

When Meghan first wore this there was the usual complaints about fit, but I liked it right away. It just dazzled on her and with her posture and calm, it all just worked and a great way to end the few days of dazzle that she pulled off. Now that was a exit no one will soon forget and I we have the pictures to prove it.
I’m fascinated by the pronunciation of the name. Omid Scobie has been calling it “Arch-well” on his podcast for months. A brand with a hard to pronounce or non-intuitive name is a huge challenge to overcome. If anyone can do it, it’s them, but from a PR stance, it’s a risky move.
I think those who follow them will get it the first time H/M pronounce it themselves in one of their zoom. It’s just that everyone has been saying it the way they think it’s supposed to be said, so inconsistent, but we haven’t heard them say it yet. Once they do, people will repeat it the way they heard them say it. Truth, though it’s an unusual name and because it’s being talked about since it was first announced even mispronounced it will still be recognizable. Go them.

Do foundations tend to throw big fundraising galas? Like, has the Obama Foundation or Bill and Melinda Gates thrown any big parties? I’m genuinely asking because I don’t know.
I don’t remember any big launch for a website and they don’t need to. I guess if we weren’t in the middle of a pandemic they may have combined it with a project launch of some kind. Still, yesterday they did the Times 100 and then announced this, so that’s like a project launched and an announcement in a way.
The Obama Foundation has a yearly summit and some private dinners, and the Gates Foundation has various galas and other events. When they launched they both announced a bevy of initiatives, laid out some goals, announced some partners etc. Not a party exactly but an event.
I haven’t been following along these past few months, so I’m not clear on exactly how big their foundation is aiming to be, but if the comparison is to the Gates’s, the Obama’s, The Clinton’s etc. then yeah, this is atypical. Even in a pandemic, a big splashy video announcing the launch and at least a few new initiatives would be the norm. Maybe it’s coming.
