Princess Charlene debuts a new ’90s skaterboi haircut in Monaco: love it or hate it?

Princess Charlene of Monaco shows off her new punkish hairstyle at The traditional Christmas Tree children event at Monaco

In September, we checked in with Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene a few times, mostly to clown on her hideous baby bangs. Charlene has been going through some changes in this, our most garbage year, and for Charlene that means changing up her hair in completely new and terrible ways. The baby-bangs were pretty bad, and I didn’t think it could get any worse. I was wrong! These are photos of Charlene handing out gifts in Monte Carlo yesterday. It was all part of the annual Christmas tree ceremony and it looks like the Grimaldis really organized a nice gift-give-away for the children of Monaco, which is really nice. Charlene was one of Santa’s helpers and even Santa was masked (so was Charlene).

As you can see, Charlene debuted her new hair. Gone are the straight-ironed baby bangs laying flat on her forehead. Now her hair resembles the typical Kate Gosselin “Karen” haircut, only she shaved one side. She also still has the bangs, she just swept them to the side. I know that I have strong opinions about hair, but MY GOD!! I cannot get over this hair style. I made out with a skaterboi with this EXACT haircut when I was 14. That’s what this haircut is – ‘90s skaterboi.

When I posted about this on Twitter, someone accused me of, like, being in the pocket of Big Disney and suggested that I believe every princess needs to have long princess hair. I don’t believe that! There are plenty of shorter hairstyles which look super-cute. Charlene used to have an angular bob style which – I thought – really suited her face. This is just BAD hair.

One thing though: I LOVE HER MASK!!

It’s like she’s gotten a traditional post break up haircut. But without being able to break up.

    • Bibi says:

There is nothing wrong or bad about this new style but this princess hairstyle is a cry for help. 2020 must have been awful for her. I interpret this as pulling a Britney.

      • Glitteratti69 says:

Seems like that to me too. Although the Grimaldis are a bit Euro-trashy, see Princess Stefanie living in a trailer and the whole circus thing, so maybe it’s just a bad style decision.

      • Ronaldinho says:

Was going to say the same Bibi

Something significant is going on here. I hope she’s okay.

      • Desert Lizard says:

I thought the same thing. She is going through something difficult right now and that’s why she got this haircut. I can’t imagine her devoted hubby (sarcasm font in use) would care for this on his wife. I also saw this as a desperate move and a cry for help. Sadly, I think that cry will go unanswered. I would not want her life for a second.

      • SM says:

That was my feeling. She is pulling a Britney. She clearly need to get away from that scum of a husband of hers.

      • Jo says:

I actually kind of love it. I don’t like to interpret or assume anything, sometimes hair is just hair.
But I think it’s badass coming from a member of the royalty, even if it’s Monaco and it’s more laid back. I doubt they encourage something like this, and she did it anyway. Good for her.

    • Ravensdaughter says:

She reminds me of Boy George circa “Karma Chameleon”. The glittery accessories and makeup certainly help.

      • AnnaKist says:

Snap! Thanks, Ravensdaughter. I could see a resemblance but the name wouldn’t come. I hope it’s her way of saying, “Fvck you. Fvck the lot of you.”

      • Meg says:

Yes! The makeup and choice of mask make the whole thing a look, & she seems to be having fun with it. Its just hair it’ll grow back if you change your mind . Might as well have fun. That was my favorite thing growing up, spurr of the moment id buy a box of hair color and try something different

      • Few says:

I actually loved the baby bangs and I love the mini Mohican. Historically, Pocahontas as she’s called colloquially, had this hair style. I all for experimentation & am so sick of trend. Do what suits the unique Personality.

      • J says:

That’s the first thing I thought when I saw the photo, too. Boy George!

I would be inclined to think it’s a cry for help, but she’s clearly smiling behind the mask, so she seems happy rather than troubled.

    • jules says:

LOL! I personally love it, but I think that she’s hoping Albert will be less attracted to her.

      • LahdidahBaby says:

LOL! Couldn’t blame her for that, if so.

      • I don’t care if she shaves her entire head. It’s her body and her life. More power to her. What I do like is that she and her two children and her husband and everyone with them are ALL wearing masks. The British Royal family can’t be bothered. So 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 To the Monaco royal family for showing up and following pandemic protocol.

      • Carol says:

her haircut is cute but I just don’t think it looks that great on her.

    • I had that exact haircut in 1984-85. ROFL. Go Charlene. 🙂

  2. Zapp Brannigan says:

I love it, it has a very strong Princess Skillrex vibe.

Guess a two inch trim is happening in Amner hall as we speak to be (attention grabbing) daring and the face of modern royalty.

    • Mindy_Dopple says:

Princess Skillrex!! Great one. She does look like she’s going to go DJ at a rave after this.

    • Cherry says:

I love it, too. I think she looks wicked.

    • MattyLove says:

Hahahaha!! Love the thought of Kate daringly going for a drastic two inch trim!

    • cassandra says:

I love it purely for being a give no fxxxs flex on her part

      • Silent Star says:

Agreed @Cassandra! I don’t have strong feelings either way about her style (I’ve shaved parts of my hair numerous times and think it’s great), but I LOVE the fact that she’s a princess and she just dares to do it! Screw protocol! Fuck tradition! Lol

    • Kumquat says:

      I believe it’s spelled “Skrillex”.

She is definitely going through something intense. I read a rumor online that there may be yet another out-of-wedlock child of Albert’s that has been discovered. Maybe it’s an “F U Albert” haircut.

    • lucky says:

OMG, I effing LOVE it too! Totally bad ass. What other woman in her position would DREAM of doing that. Go Charlene, make them all question their assumptions about what being a woman/princess/woman of a certain age means!

    • FHMom says:

      I love it, too.

    • Nan says:

I’m in the love-it camp too; also didn’t mind her baby bangs, that’s been gone long enough as a trend that it can be cute again. Does she also have a scalp tattoo in the back under her hairline? Kind of looks like it? Yay, Princess Charlene, be a rebel!

    • Sarah says:

TOTALLY AGREE. It’s fricking cool and edgy. not everything has to be cute or pretty.

  3. Seraphina says:

This is Princess Charlene’s silent cry for help – there is no other explanation for what I see in these pictures – including the ensemble she is wearing.

    • Snuffles says:

I agree. She attempted to runaway and flee the country THREE TIMES before her wedding because she found out about all of Prince Albert’s illegitimate children. They stripped her of her passport and forced her to stay. AND cried non-stop during the entire wedding ceremony. She was nicknamed the “prisoner bride”.

So, I think she’s clearly going through some things.

      • Seraphina says:

I find it odd she chose to debut this haircut at this event – Christmas gifts being given out. Although I do not like the cut, I could see this in the summer or spring, but during a holiday event. She KNEW all eyes would be on her and all mouths would start to gossip.

      • Tiffany says:

I think she knew about the children and did not care.

That did not effect her and her bottom line. Something else happened that did.

      • Chicka says:

Yikes. For those sitting her saying it’s a cry for help. When she needed your help, when she tried fleeing her wedding, where was the public outcry that a woman was being married against her will, if in fact you all really believe that? It boggles the mind anyone can sit here and say she’s crying for help bc of her choice of hair style (which I don’t think is a cry for help at all, it’s more likely a return to self) and yet, they could not give an ounce of energy to really try an help a woman being imprisoned in a country. They just sat back and watched. Something about it reminds me about The hypocrisy of pro – lifers.

I hope she has come home to herself and loves what she sees when she looks in the mirror. She looks fabulous.

    • MissMarierose says:

LOL. I doubt it’s as dramatic as all that.
She probably just had an accident with one of the toddlers and decided to try going a little punk until the oopsie grows out properly.

    • Cherry says:

Totally disagree! She does not give me victim vibes at all. Badass superhero, more like.

      • I pet goat 2 says:

Right? Why are not traditionally feminine haircuts a cry for help? 😀 I think she looks cool.

      • Ocho says:

I agree completely, Cherry and Ipetgoat2! She looks like she’s feeling it.

      • Tess says:

Agree! She looks amazing. Whatever she’s going through personally this year, it appears to be empowering her and bringing out some bold creativity. My son has had this hair cut for years (only minus the bangs) and lately I’ve been wanting to copy it so badly.

      • molly says:

I agree with this too. It may not be the traditional princess hair, but it’s very in style right now. I know several people who have gotten a cut/shave like this recently. I’d never do it myself, but it’s very current and very popular.

    • Lemons says:

This feels like acting out. While I am willing to accept this awful haircut because everyone deserves to have a LOOK, I am not willing to accept the granny rhinestone sweater with w/e this coat is all at once. I think she’s having a bit of an identity crisis and is just trying to find her footing.

If she had given us a full-length shot wearing sweatpants and uggs, they would not have been out of place with this outfit…but definitely out of place with the event.

I just kinda hope she’s okay since she has been veering into questionable these last few outings. Maybe it’s just a mini-crisis.

  4. Tulipworthy says:

Oooh that is a bad dated hairstyle.

  5. smegmoria says:

My husband used to have that hair in middle and high school. So glad I knew him then. Hair so hot in the 90s.

  6. Lightpurple says:

She changed up the color too.

People have been playing with their hair during Covid. It looks like she let her kids do hers. It’s hair; it will grow.

  7. Alexandria says:

I actually love it because she’s a Princess rocking it.

But I do hope she is alright and thriving and safe.

    • sa says:

“I actually love it because she’s a Princess rocking it.”

This. I’m personally not a fan of the hairstyle, but I love that a princess has this hairstyle.

    • BW says:

I don’t like it, but I like it on her.

Plus, if Albert hates it, that gets her out of sleeping with him.

      • Flamingo says:

Y’all, she hasn’t slept with him in years. She had her perfect IVF boy/ girl twins (I’m not hating, my kid is IVF) and then moved on with her life. Outside of official events, I’d doubt that they see each other more than a handful of times a year.

    • megs283 says:

Same, I love that she’s taking risks, especially in light of the confines of her job. It’s just hair and I’m glad she’s having fun. (And that mask is PERFECT with that ‘do.)

    • sassafras says:

      Yes to both of these!
      She’s a f’ing Princess. It’s 2020. Why the F not.

But also, hope she’s okay (like I hope EVERYONE is okay.)

  8. dlc says:

I kind of love her for this! I think it’s cool that she is not doing the traditionally feminine hair.

    • Northstar says:

Same. Love the hair, the clothes, the mask. And I think she feels good about herself. Look at her eyes – she feels daring and strong.

      • anna says:

exactly. what a great look and attitude.

      • Thirtynine says:

Absolutely. That’s not just a haircut, that’s a look! She went full dangerous smoky eye, bronze sequin mask, and a golden brown puffa ensemble that exaggerates her size. She’s not telegraphing ‘help me’ to me, more like ‘hear me roar’.

  9. Sofia says:

I don’t hate the length, I just don’t think the shaved part looks good on her

    • KhaoManee says:

Me too. I think if it were just buzzed really short on the side and not totally shaved it would look cool on her. I don’t get why people are saying it’s a cry for help. I mean, women can shave their heads and not be going through some sort of mental breakdown.

    • lucy2 says:

I agree, I think it’s shaved too close. Maybe in a couple of weeks it’ll look good.

Not my thing, but if she’s happy with it, great.

  10. Sarah says:

    Yikes to the hair.

Other celebs/rich folk please pay attention to the mask situation, THIS is what you should all be doing. you have the resources, get on it.

  11. mlouise@hotmail.com says:

I think the story is 1- great to hang toys to kids with masks on (so easy to do better than attending panto maskless); 2- her style is REALLY interesting: LOVE the jacket and she wears it, not the other way, takes personnality and confidence; 3- her hair looks good with the whole look and say she is gutsy- I think she is; 4- her mask is very cool and again, not boring and takes good sense of style. She deserves respect in my opinion.

  12. Jay says:

I think she should go shorter, like buzz cut blonde, but *eh* if she’s happy with it…

And no way Kate would ever let go of the security blanket that is the sausage curls. Sadly, it’s her most identifiable feature (as opposed to, say, anything about her personality).

  13. Mindy_Dopple says:

She seems to love it. And there is something defiant about non traditional hair cuts, so I’m gonna let her LIIIVVE. Perhaps her husband kept making comments about how pretty she would look with long blonde hair and this is her response. 😝

  14. I pet goat 2 says:

    Very cool

  15. Jessica says:

This woman has always given off a prisoner vibe. Maybe she just wanted something new and fresh, and if so, good for her. Or maybe it’s a statement. I do know one thing for sure, a British royal could never do this without a complete orchestra of people screaming about “protocol”. You’d have to get the fainting couches out for the royal press pack.

  16. Peanut says:

I like it and I totally get the impulse bc I want to do something similar. We’re all in a state of suspended animation right now so why not?

    • Jessica says:

Yeah, I agree. People will read into it (I kind of did too), because their relationship seems so weird and she seems so unhappy, but this makes sense. Now is as good a time as any to adopt a drastic new look. Nothing much else going on.

    • Becks1 says:

Yeah, I actually like it too. She can pull it off. It works with the dramatic eye makeup too.

    • dlc says:

I didn’t go anywhere near that dramatic, but I got a pretty daring cut by my standards a few months ago, lol. 10 inches off one side for a wavy asymmetrical Bob. Ear length on one side and chin length on the other.

  17. Stacy Dresden says:

I think this is awesome. I’m in favor of anyone defying gender conventions on an international stage.

    • Millennial says:

I also think it’s a great, badass haircut. I’ve seriously considered this cut myself a time or two, and it’s not because it’s a “cry for help” or “I’m going through something.” I’m just a grown ass woman who doesn’t care anymore if I look pretty by society’s standards, I just want cool hair.

I think it’s interesting that not traditionally feminine haircut can bring out so much internalized misogyny and heteronormativity.

  18. mtec says:

I like the idea, but not so much the execution… i think she should have styled the hair she has left differently.

  19. La says:

I don’t love the short bang in the front but I love that a princess is doing whatever tf she wants with her hair in a non “traditional girly princess” way.

One of my closest friends has had her hair like this for years and she looks like a total badass and gets compliments on it almost every time we’re out. She keeps hers longer in the front and it really suits her face and personality. It’s definitely a look you need to be able to own.

  20. Mignionette says:

This is not a good look, but not for any aesthetic reasons.

I think as someone alluded to above, I think this a “f-you” to the courtiers or worse still a cry for help.

Charlene has always been fashion forward and androgynous in some of her looks but this haircut feels different.

    • Seraphina says:

Correct and the event in which she chose to debut the style. These people (who are players on the world stage and royals no less) are very aware of optics and that is why I question the style and the event in which she chose to debut. Personally I do not like it and have seen her rock some great short cuts.

    • February-Pisces says:

Even if Charlene was all punk on the inside, as a royal she’s not suppose to show any individuality. She’s suppose to dress stylish and conservative. I can ‘t imagine this going down well with courtiers and I’m surprised no one made her wear a wig. This is a massive f*ck you and I’m all for it, I’m sure she’s treated appallingly behind the scenes.

      • Mignionette says:

February-Pisces – as far as I am aware Charlene has always been publicly very Conservative, even in her previous career as a swimmer.

This is an interesting haircut for a Royal who has previously stuck to the script.

      • Thirtynine says:

I’m not sure if you meant this seriously, so forgive me if I’ve misunderstood you. Charlene is certainly allowed to show her individuality as a Royal, just as all other Royals do. We can see the differences between Kate, Letizia, Maxima, Anne, Mary and so on in their style easily. Charlene is offending no-one by inapproriately flashing in front of children, she disrespects nobody by showing up to the party unwashed or in her gardening clothes, she is warm and sparkling and shiny and festive. Her style has always been far more experimental and high fashion than most of us could comfortably wear, but that is who she is. Maybe this is how she expresses her creativity? Maybe she enjoys fashion? I just feel it is terrible to condemn her to look ‘stylish and conservative’ to fit some old-fashioned, mythical Princess ideal, instead of the mature, modern woman that she is who is capably carrying out a Royal role and duties. And I suspect stylish and conservative in Monaco may look quite different than it does in somewhere like England. People are commenting that she is a prisoner trapped in her marriage desperately signalling a cry for help, but the expectation that she has to show no individuality because she married a Prince or face public criticism for her choice on how to wear the hair on her head is just as much a cage.

      • February-Pisces says:

I don’t mean it like I care, I mean that the likes and Diana and Meghan always got sh*t on for daring to actually have some sort of personality and individuality like it was the greatest threat to the monarchy. Where as Kate is praised for being a human robot. All their public style it’s still quite smart and stylish. Meghan got accuses of breaking protocol for black nail polish, can you imaging if she shaved her head. Imaging in the queen randomly shaved her head. I used to have a few secret piercings back in the day that I kept hidden from my family for the longest time. It’s like covering your tattoos when your at work, you might love them, but showing that side of you in a professional setting might not be seen as appropriate. From the monarchy’s perspective The whole point of royal wives it that they are suppose to just stand there and look nice and show no real character, so it feels like she’s massively rebelling against that, not that I mind, good for her for telling them to stick it. Charlene might be a full on goth/punk/rocker behind closed doors, but she would never ever be allowed to actually show that even if she wanted, that’s why this is quite shocking, but I do love her for it.

  21. Chaine says:

I love it. She’s giving me Imperator Furiosa vibes,

  22. LOOKITSME says:

Hate. It. She is way to attractive for this haircut. (I have always this haircut style on any one).

  23. Gayle says:

I think this style is BAD as in awful and unflattering!

It might be a cry for help. By the way. what was the reaction of the young children who attended the event?

    Need I say more?

    • Amy Too says:

You mean the children who watch animated shows in which the characters have all sorts of crazily colored and styled hair? Cartoon super hero girls with bright pink, spiky hair? Animated monster truck driving boys with blue Mohawks? Even the “tame” educational shows on PBS have characters with all sorts of crazy hair styles. I don’t think children are as shocked by different hair styles on women as you think they might be. Maybe if she had a decapitated and bleeding Santa doll wired into her hair-do somewhere, but as is, there is nothing frightening about her hair.

Or are you worried about the children not getting to see a traditional, pretty, pretty Princess with long flowing curls, as if they will be scarred for life or let down by seeing a Princess that doesn’t conform to Barbie or Disney stereotypes? The idea that this real, live, actual human woman should have to style herself against her own taste and self-identity so that she can be a living, breathing example of traditional, monarchical, gender stereotypes that she does not personally like nor conform to is….. not good.

If all Princesses have to have traditionally feminine, “pretty” hairstyles then maybe we should not be asking modern day, 21st century women to be Princesses? Perhaps it’s the concept of Princesses in general that is the problem here and not the adult woman in 2020 exercising her right to choose her own hairstyle?

  24. TeamAwesome says:

I love it! She would look so good with a straight up skin fade pixie.

  25. GreenBunny says:

Is it just me that sees Gary Oldman as Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg in Fifth Element’s hairstyle? That being said, it’s not my style but if she’s happy and is rocking it, good for her.

  26. mlouise@hotmail.com says:

I find it personally appalling to read all comments about her ‘unhappiness and prisoner vibe’, what does anyone know about it? Maniacal grins do not prove happiness, we know her story about getting cold feet, apparently Diana did too, … but both have shown strenght in their journey and I condone it. Lots of people do not have perfect lifes and relationships, we should not make it all about it.

  27. GuestwithCat says:

I love it because she loves it. This is the first time I’ve seen genuine happiness in her eyes. And she is able to pull it off.

  28. Stef says:

She’s always seemed so very unhappy. Given how she was not allowed to flee her wedding and was forced to marry a man she didn’t love, I don’t see her becoming happy since then.

In my experience, women who make this drastic of a hair change have either recently gone through a breakup or are crying out for help (i.e. Britney). It looks awful. Perhaps she’s getting revenge on her husband by saying F U to what is traditionally expected of her and her own hair is one thing she can control.

    • Thirtynine says:

It isn’t just a break up or a cry for help in a negative sense though. People change their hair dramatically as part of reinventing themselves in a positive way too.

      • Stef says:

Good point, but usually they get flattering hair styles and not something out of Mad Max. She’s a gorgeous woman and just looks terrible here.

  29. Tiff says:

I recognize that hair. That’s midlife crisis hair. I’ve had that hair…

  30. ib says:

    I thinks it’s badass.

  31. Jen says:

She looks great! I love it when women don’t feel confined to expectations of “pretty” or “flattering”. She’s beautiful no matter what she does with her hair.

  32. bus says:

Maybe it’s just a coincidence but a video game, Cyberpunk 2077 was just released and a lot of the characters in this game have a similar hairstyle. Maybe she’s a gamer!? lol

  33. Seeker542 says:

I’m not into the style, but I like the energy she’s bringing here. Something’s up behind the scenes.

  34. Flying Fish says:

I like that, for a Royal, she deviating from the norm, but it is not becoming on her. Maybe a shot without the mask will change my impression!

  35. Cee says:

I think it looks ridiculous but she was handing out presents to kids AND managed to wear a mask. Unlike those two I shall not name.

  36. Div says:

I find it odd that people think her hairstyle is a “cry for help”. If she normally had a very conservative, stodgy look I would perhaps get it…but she’s always pushed (as far as she could in her role) the fashion boundaries. She strikes me as the sort of woman who if she wasn’t a princess would probably dress in very eccentric, quirky ways so this haircut—which as someone above noted is right out of Cyberpunk—make sense.

I do think Albert tried to get her to do Princess Grace cosplay and she basically went f*ck it.

  37. Kali says:

While it may not be my thing, she seems to love her haircut (you can still see the big smile under her mask in the last photo) and I adore the confidence of a Princess who shaves her head. Do you, Charlene.

  38. February-Pisces says:

Charlene is technically queen consort if Monaco. Could you imagine if kate or Meghan decided to shave half of their head, it would cause shockwave around the world. This is definitely a cry for help and her sticking it to her husband and the monarchy. I know she tried to escape her wedding and I’ve heard that she’s basically a prisoner. I hope she makes her great escape somehow.

    • Katherine says:

Monaco is a principality not a kingdom, so technically no she’s not. Albert and Charlene are the Sovereign Prince and Princess and that’s as high as it goes there.

  39. kgeo says:

I get what she’s going for. I think it would look great completely buzzed or slightly grown out from a buzz. Kind of Charlize Theron, I love that on women built like these two. I want to buzz my head, but I know I would hate it after a very short time, so I’m just going to keep growing it out.

  40. MissJ says:

I think it’s awesome. Cry for help or not, girl wear your hair how you want.

  41. Mignionette says:

One thing I noticed was that she is making a big deal of her hands, which are ring-less.

Albert and the Courtiers must be sweating buckets.

Divorce announcement imminent, or at the very least a re-negotiation of her Princess Contract, Melania style.

    • Lemons says:

You’re right! There’s no ring and from photos, I see that she was wearing it before with the baby bangs…very astute observation.

  42. Marigold says:

I love it. If only I had the guts! Also, why does it have to look “attractive”? The cult of beauty is so oppressive.

  43. Mgal says:

    It’s awesome. Good for her.

  44. emu says:

I love it. It looks great. I love her new edgier look and it seems to make her happy. Get it girl!

  45. Implicit says:

It’s not my thing but it works keeping that Ray eyed, marshmallow bodied, sweaty pig looking “Prince Albert” off her I LOVE IT

    • Lady D says:

Albert has always reminded me of Andrew. They seem two of a sweaty kind. I wonder how many half-sibs Beatrice and Eugenie have?

  46. mish-mash says:

Oh My that haircut looks like a cry for help….poor thing

  47. Laura-J says:

I love it. Especially because it’s not part of the “royal look”. If I did it it would look lame, on her it looks pretty badass!

  48. katharine says:

Wow, how retrograde to call this a “cry for help.” It’s awesome that she dares to be different from all the basic royals and faux-royals–good for her! I’d absolutely love to see what you’d all say if Meghan did such a thing (not that she would in a billion years). Then it would be the greatest, and you’d all rush out to get the same haircut.

  49. Nic919 says:

While I don’t love the look she does seem to look happy so if this is a DGAF haircut then more power to her. I don’t think this is a Britney style shave but doing something beyond the expectations of what a princess should look like. Society still imposes expectations on women and their hair and so many women are afraid to get their hair cut short because they believe they won’t look sexy for men.

She may be sending a message to Albert, but it’s more of a don’t eff with me than a woe is me message.

    • Mignionette says:

I don’t think that look says happy. I think it says something else. I am getting Britney circa 2007 vibes from this haircut.

And for those saying Charlene can dress how she wants, I urge you to visit Monaco. It’s a very conservative little Principality. If Albert had felt he could be edgy and buck tradition he would have possibly married Alexandre’s mother (the Congolese/ French Air Hostess). Instead he specifically chose a woman who looks like Charlene to provide him with an heir. In fact Albert is on record as saying that when he saw Charlene he knew she’d be perfect for the purpose. He described her as classy, gracious and restrained so no edgy, grungy haircuts are not part of the continental Euro Princess aesthetic.

  50. Jessi says:

If I had her height, bone structure and physique, I’d get experimental with my hair too! Is it, objectively, a good haircut? Maybe not. But she’s gorgeous and this is fun and punk and I dig it. Also, it’s just hair! She can change it up so easily!

(Anybody else waiting for Charlize Theron to play her in a lifetime movie?)

    • L4frimaire says:

I honestly thought it was Charlize Theron when I first saw that photo. I actually kind of like the shaved head, but I thought maybe it was because of some hair mishap. I like her outfit and mask.

  51. Wilma says:

Love it. She also looks really animated, even from behind a mask.

  52. Zia says:

I absolutely love it on her personally. Whether its a cry for help or not, its a boss bold move and she’s so pretty she can totally pull it off.

  53. Lexistential says:

As someone who has a similar haircut, I don’t see this as a “cry for help”, but rather a defiant instinct to do things her way and be her own person. And any Monegasque courtier can go suck it.

That said, I wish I liked this more. I hate the bangs and think she should have shaved further down the side of her head to create a new “part” rather than where her line starts. It may look better once the bangs grow out more and once she has 1-2 weeks of hair grown back in, but her shaved line is too close to the center of her head.

  54. Stelly says:

I think she looks cool! And happy for a change

  55. Nyro says:

I’m not a fan of the haircut itself but I love that she has the freedom to do it. This kind of self-expression, particularly from a woman, would be never be allowed in The Firm.

  56. bitchyarchitect says:

I f*cking love this haircut. But yeah- probably a mid-life crisis haircut. I died my hair magenta when I turned 40. I loved it.

  57. Lunasf17 says:

I love it! I love that she is doing something unconventional and not taking it too seriously.

  58. Valiantly Varnished says:

I dont like the haircut but I live that she is eschewing the idea of what a princess should look like. It’s a pretty daring look for a princess to have even in 2020. So good for her on that front. It just needs to be cut and styled better.

  59. Itteh Bitteh says:

I personally love it…with the exception of the weird baby bangs, because I have a very similar haircut myself. Complete with 3/4 of my head buzzed. 🤷‍♀️

  60. BlackScorpio says:

I do think something is up. A cry for help? I’m not so sure… her eyes look bolder and more alive in these pics compared to before. I hope it is because she is now feeling empowered and is trying to free herself from what has been weighing her down for years.

  61. BeanieBean says:

I like the idea of it. That’s about all I can say.

  62. Amelie says:

I personally love this. Most people seem to hate shaved heads looks unless it’s a guy going bald and most of the comments here seem to prove that. But I love the punk vibe and it goes so well with her sequin mask, glittery sweater dress, and crazy butterfly yellow coat. I think it would look even better if the hair were a bit longer. She’s giving off artsy college theater kid vibes/Charlize Theron in Mad Max. Neither Meghan nor Kate would be able to pull off this haircut or this outfit in a million years. Monaco is a principality where the ridiculously wealthy indulge and flaunt their excessive wealth, and I’ve never taken its status as a principality seriously either. It’s like the Las Vegas of Europe with a bananas royal family. This haircut seems like the least weird thing I’ve seen.

  63. Jumpingthesnark says:

She is smiling from the eyes which I’ve rarely seen her do in the past. I also like her new edgier look and it seems to make her happier. Maybe she has figured out how to assert herself with the courtiers behind the scenes. Everyone deserves to live a more genuine life! More power to her!

  64. Andrea says:

Am I the only one who loves the baby bangs, jacket, and mask? She looks kind of French runway model overall. Not my deal with the shaved head, but I support diversity and gender bending not the typical 1950’s Amish clothing like our gal Kate up in the UK. What a refreshing look!

  65. Holly hobby says:

That’s hideous. Did she do that as an FU to Albert?

  66. Mia says:

As a queer lady – I LOVE IT! 😍 Personally, I think it reads as bisexual and I happen to have a weakness for strong women and this is a CONFIDENT haircut on a BEAUTIFUL woman.

Plus anything is better than baby bangs

The 90s are back! They’ve been back for a while now because of Gen Z lol

Kaiser you crack me up every day 💚 this pandemic would be so much worse without your wit. I too, LOVE her mask!

  67. Charfromdarock says:

I love it because she looks happy. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen her with a spark in her eyes.

Plus it is SOO non-traditional for a woman in her position and SOO non-princessey.

I would imagine the British royal courtiers heads would implode if any of the RF women rocked up to an event with this style.

  68. M.A.F. says:

Didn’t Charlize Theron at one point have a cut like this? or maybe one of her characters? My only issue with the cut are the sides and the back. It just doesn’t seem cut/shaved correctly.

  69. Fleur says:

I also think it reads as very happy and confident, and also it reads as a deliberate FU to her husband because she knows he won’t want her with this haircut and it’s proof he can’t control her.

Plus she’s living in Southern Europe and South European rich people seem to have a big streak of Weird and Eccentric, so this goes with that vibe.

  70. Thirtynine says:

I was so mesmerised by Charlene, I didn’t even notice Santa’s mask till now. That’s very weird, but good for them!

  71. Natasha says:

Did everyone read the articles about FKA Twigs? She said she had money and she had the means to escape but she couldn’t. She just couldn’t. Charline could be in the same prisoner position and I think this is a cry for help. I hope she can escape and not face the same tragic death as Diana.

    • Mignionette says:

      @ Natasha – I agree.

I suspect that she has been warned that if she leaves Monaco, she will also lose access to her children. Especially given that Jacques is heir to the Principality.

So now she is upping the ante to force the Courtiers and Albert to work with her to some extent. She’s “done her job” so I don’t understand why Albert doesn’t just agree to a divorce thereby allowing them both move on with the next phase of their lives.

It’s not like Albert has been a saint or has a reputation to uphold. This is after all a man who only decided in middle age that he needed to provide an heir. In fact the whole family is so mired in scandal that it’s odd that they’re not yet divorced.

  72. ChamomileLawn says:

This is Charlene’s equivalent of Nicole Kidman punching the air in the exuberance of her newly minted freedom outside the lawyers office. The free ring fingers , the unroyal hairdo!

  73. Marni112 says:

Think something more going on here as she has also lost her eyebrows….alopecia????
Always loved the now deleted interview with her and Albert where the interviewer started asking about the pre-wedding rumours and zip…the interview ended.

  74. L4frimaire says:

That haircut will go perfectly with some Joan of Arc armor. I think it’s cool but curious about what’s going on with her. She looks ok here, seems more confident, but she usually looks unhappy or wilted in photos. I feel like she is an atrophied person, just going her duty. I don’t follow European royals but is she well received and liked in Monaco?

  75. Bendy Windy says:

    I like it.

  76. Minorbird says:

She’s probably hoping that her moist-palmed, stubby hubby will not be attracted to her and stop trying to touch her, LOL!!

    poor lady

  77. A Fan says:

    Couple things astrologically:

Charlene has her Sun and Venus tightly conjunct in Aquarius. She will always be unique in her appearance and may not always conform to what we think of as traditional ‘feminine’ beauty.

She is approaching her Uranus opposition (which always happens in one’s early to mid forties). It can be a time of sudden moves/drastic decisions (in any realm) and is often referred to as a ‘mid-life crisis’. It can manifest in many ways (ie. something as simple as a haircut or as drastic as a unexpected divorce).

Her north node is in Libra, which means her south node is in Aries. She is absolutely no pushover. She does what she wants and is NO wallflower (no matter what others may think or the perception we have).

To add fuel to that Aries south node fire, her Moon and Mars (if birth time is correct) are in Leo. Again, she has a very willful side to her (regardless of what anyone thinks).

[*And Leo makes a show of their mane – long, short, shaved, or bald!*]
