Here is our Open Post for today’s Inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. It is upon us. It’s been nothing but fascism, racism, misogyny, violence, bigotry, nationalism, treason, sedition and lies from Donald Trump for five solid years. 81,283,485 good Americans voted for a change, or at least we were voting to a return to a time when we could just go days without worrying about an orange madman’s dangerous stupidity. And today is the day we finally get to see our new president and new vice president take the oath of office.
Unlike the Obama-Biden inaugurations, this will not be an inauguration full of people and parties and cheering. President Biden is being sworn in amid a deadly pandemic and an economy in free fall, in a city which is in complete lockdown because of a terrorist attack on the Capitol. But like the Obama-Biden inauguration, I feel hope. I don’t think President Biden and Vice President Harris are going to solve every problem and fix everything wrong with this country. I do think that they’re both very competent, intelligent, compassionate people who understand their constitutional roles and want to genuinely make America great again. Or, at the very least, they want to make America better.

Seriously, there’s no end to the grifting of that family, leeches until the very end. And I’m not even American….
I think it can be removed with this second impeachment if they are specific about it.

I’m just so excited to have a president that I trust to always do what he thinks is in the country’s best interest – not his best interest, not his wallet’s best interest – but the country’s. That doesn’t mean he’s not going to make mistakes or I’m going to love everything he does. But it means I feel a huge sense of relief.
To my dear American friends – I’m so glad that competent adults are in charge again. I know everything won’t change immediately, but I have hope that the future will be brighter for you all 💛
And while they are not my leaders, I absolutely teared up as VP Harris was sworn in. What a lovely day of firsts!
@Becks1, ITA. I may not have agreed with everything the presidents prior to Trump did, but I respected them, if only because of the office. As the commentators said during the Inauguration today, there has always been a peaceful transfer of power, whether the incoming/outgoing were bitter rivals or friends. The outgoing president writing a letter to the incoming is a tradition as is the incoming president seeing the outgoing to Marine 1 and sending him off. It is respect for the office and for the traditions of our country. Biden will be a return to that and I believe he will try to do his best for the country’s citizens, whether they voted for him or not. He will make mistakes, not everyone will be happy, but he will try and he will be a president who represents us well.
When I saw Pence sitting in the audience and speaking with VP Harris and Sen Klobuchar, and all the Republicans showing up because it was the right thing to do, all our former presidents who were able to make it back, and our nation’s leaders milling around and talking civilly to each other I thought, wow, the adults are back.
Just seeing our elected officials dressed in their best and honoring our nation’s transfer of power by speaking to each other after the ceremony brought tears to my eyes.

Also, Amy Comey Barrett looks completely ridiculous in that judge outfit and looks so out of place.
Michelle Obama is always gorgeous, but my jaw nearly dropped by how stunning she looks today.
Is the step-daughter the woman in the autumnal looking jacket with sparkly shoulders? To the extent that you can love someone based only on their clothes, I love her. I’ve been trying to figure out who she is.

When she turned around and looked at the flag while singing, “and our flag was still there”, I totally lost it. She is an amazing performer. The PERFECT person to sing that song on this day. Canada’s national broadcaster has an interesting backstory. Although it lauded Lady Gaga’s performance, the CBC indicated that Francis Scott Key was a slaveowner who sought to execute abolitionists. I did not know that, but I did know that Amazing Grace was written by a reformed slave merchant. In either case, both tunes beat YMCA or anything by Lee Greenwood!

SA, I had a call with my dept leader for right now, and this morning she rescheduled it for next week, apologizing that she didn’t look at the date and time when sending the request. I had a few calls this morning and most people have acknowledged there’s not a lot of work going on right now! I’m lucky to work with so many progressives.
For the last several months, I’ve had one image in my mind that I called upon whenever I really spiraled over this election cycle. And it was Joe Biden with his hand on a Bible on Inauguration Day. My heart is full today, and I am all kinds of emotional about our first Madam Vice President.
Thank the lord! I’m watching this with my students today. What a relief it is.

What a wonderful inauguration. I’m just sad my daughter was stuck on Zoom school and could not see history in the making. Her school was off yesterday but not today.
I couldn’t help think of how much Joe was probably missing Beau and Kamala missing her mother.
My husband and I toasted the swearing in of both president and vp with glasses we ordered from the Inauguration store. Unfortunately the champagne glasses haven’t shipped yet. But we had other official whiskey glasses, t-shirts and buttons. Lol. I don’t drink for health reasons so I had ginger ale.

Same here for me in Germany, I started crying when they announced Sotomayor and Harris, and tears flowed all through her being sworn in, and then some more for good measure later. So so so relieved. You could really hear people of the world breathe sighs of relief. There is a difficult path ahead, but we can now look at it with hope again.
And I am not a huge Gaga fan, but I do think she has a beautiful voice and I absolutely loved her version of the anthem. JLo also slayed it. And Amanda Gorman was utterly amazing. Great speech by Biden, too. Can you imagine, we don’t have to wake up to a lunatic toddler tweeting racist messages and dangerous lies from the WH at 5 am. This pandemic adjusted inauguration really should be considered the norm in the future. I thought that it flowed great.
Between that and the convention last year. I see no reason why not to do it that way again.
I woke up out of a dead sleep at 5:55 am Pacific time and thought, “He’s gone.” I knew Trump left D.C. at 5 am my time, 8 am Eastern time. I went back to sleep resting easy for the first time in what felt like forever.

I have cried so much today. Tears of joy and delight. Tears of relief and a release of four years of stress and worry. I am fairly stoic usually, but today was cathartic. I found MY country again, the country my parents emigrated to with high hopes and dreams, the country that has given me so much opportunity to do good and to do well. I can breathe. I am home again.
It really was a great ceremony. Biden’s speech was amazing and really swept away the gloom and bleakness of the Trump fiasco. So proud of everyone up there today and amazing to see VP Harris sworn in, and how she took the reigns from Pence and saw him off, a role the President would usually do if no-show 45 hadn’t slinked out of town. I was actually happy Trump wasn’t there and it gave the inauguration a much more hopeful, optimistic feel. The poem by Amanda Gorman was fire and appreciated the Hamilton references. FLOTUS Dr. Biden looked beautiful. It feels like there is a genuine reset. This is a good day.

i am thrilled for our American friends as a new page has been turned.
I have spent this entire day, crying my feelings out. I am so grateful that we have a President and Vice-President that I am proud of, again, that I believe this country can breathe again. I turned 18 and started voting in the early 90s, I was a Republican then, and I was a proud voter, still am, full stop. I had to pull my car over to the side of the road when the news announced that Bill Clinton beat G.H.W. Bush. I really loved everything about G.H.W. Bush, politically. As it goes with getting older, my political leanings changed.
Remember when Obama and McCain were the offerings? I could have gone either way, except Obama, it could not be anyone other than Obama…That was when my adult self spoke up and told me that my parents were voting for their reasons, and I had my own soul, independent of them.
I know, I am wordy, I have always been so, and my family hates me for it, but this day? It feels even more important than the day a BLACK MAN became President. Shocked. I am shocked it came to this, but I am so glad President Biden and Vice-President Harris have the ball, for the next four years.

Beautiful celebration and definitely cried all morning from relief and joy…but I had to turn it off when JLo started singing “This land is your land, this land is my land”…like, hello? Are we really going to celebrate so directly with a song that claims Indigenous Native American land as “ours”, a song about colonization? I don’t know, it just felt like a bad choice especially with the message Biden-Harris have been trying to promote. That said, it was beautiful ceremony, last night and today, and I am so, so happy and relieved and feeling really hopeful! We made it! Thank you, Black women (saving this country again…let’s hope it returns the favor)! Thank you Indigenous leaders! Thank you to all who went the distance to make this happen!
