For the past seven or eight months, I’ve said repeatedly that people have really not paid enough attention to Kamala Harris’s unique family story. Just her marriage to Doug Emhoff alone needs more attention and more press coverage, because they adore each other and they’re so cute! But I’d also like to know more about Kamala’s sister Maya, her niece Meena and all of the grandnieces, and don’t forget Kamala-as-Momala to Doug’s two children, Ella and Cole. Ella Emhoff is 22-years-old and she lives in Brooklyn. She went to Parsons and she’s a Gen Z hipster and artist. And now because of her appearance at the inauguration, people are obsessed with Ella Emhoff. And really the whole Harris-Emhoff clan.
Ella’s inauguration coat is getting so much attention! Many of the prominent women in attendance wore monochromatic looks, bold shades of plum, turquoise, royal purple or ocean blue. But not Ella. She chose a sparkly coat by MiuMiu which stood out really well. I really love the fact that Ella and Cole came out for their stepmom too.
VP Harris’s niece Meena also tweeted out some stuff about her daughters and what they wore:

Gorgeous family!
I loved her coat! She stood out in a good way.
I also love Kamala’s family story and I feel like its just another way that having Kamala Harris as VP is representative of America – stepchildren, she plays an important role in her niece and great-niece’s lives, different races, religions – for so many Americans that’s how their lives are and its nice to see that represented at the national level, especially when everyone is so happy and supportive.
I agree with you completely. There is something lovely about how much of America is represented in Kamala Harris’s family. I don’t want to bring negatively from the last administration into this happy post, but just a day before Pompeo tweeted from a government account about how multiculturalism is not American, so it was especially refreshing to see this family that has so much diversity within the family and is so visibly full of love for each other. It’s cliché, but love and affection are such a salve for hate and ignorance.
I loved, loved, loved Ella Emhoff’s coat. I loved it in a way that makes me like her, like it’s not just a pretty coat, but it’s a coat with personality.
So much this. The Harris-Emhoff clan is the epitome of family. Love. Support. Affection. Care.
And Ella & Cole’s mother, Kerstin Emhoff, was also there. She was sitting a few rows behind her kids. The level of respect, on both sides, that requires is extraordinary.
I had posted something along those lines on Facebook but I didn’t realize Doug’s first wife was there! So awesome. 🙂
Anyone else find it satisfying that little girls are still excited to meet Hillary? She was one of my heroes as a kid, and she deserves so much more appreciation than she’ll probably live to see. (Yes, I’m still bitter that people complained about “having” to vote for her in 2016!)
^^^
Same. And yes I ADORED that picture and tweet. And Hillary looked amazing, love the longer hair.
I think Hillary looks better than she has in ages. Stunning to behold, really, when you think of how she could have let bitterness consume her. Instead she looks free and light and happy. And it was heartwarming to see this exchange. I’m just in awe at the simple joys of genuine human interaction we saw yesterday, which were completely absent in the Trump era.
I liked her hair too
That was such a touching tweet and picture.
Superficially, I’ve always thought that Hillary has great hair. Like the longer look on her.
Yes! It makes me happy that she is still important to a younger generation, maybe even more important.
I think the younger generation relates to her better in general than those who were brainwashed in the nineties to think she was a communist b*tch because she wanted to give people health care.
I loved that too! Also, I think Maya Harris worked for Hillary Clinton, so her granddaughter may know of Hillary more than other girls (even those in politically minded families).
Yes!! It means a lot!
I love that our girls have these strong, capable women to look up to.
those little girls were me lol, I would also have been asking every 5 mins if I could meet Hilary Clinton, and I’m 36, and not even American!
Yes! Love her or hate her, Hillary will always mean something to young girls and she deserves a place in the history books. Plus she was right about Trump.
I was going to post to say that I was so happy the little grand niece was soooo excited to meet Hillary Clinton!
Yes! So much about this story makes me happy but that tweet really got me.
Justice for Hill, she has tried her entire life to better the lives of women and families and gets NOTHING for it.
Hillarycare 1993 – never forget
I feel like in the future, people will look back on her in a much more favorable light, possibly like Eleanor Roosevelt. I hope so, anyway. And I hope she’s found some peace after the past few years.
Yes! I truly hope that she receives some official thanks for her decades of service. It would be an amazing gesture if, before Biden leaves office, he awards her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. I can’t think of many people more worthy of it than she is.
(Remember when Obama awarded it to Biden just before leaving office? I still get teary thinking about that!)
I didn’t love the sparkles and the tweed together but I appreciated the idea and I love her overall quirky style. And Kamala’s nieces were just precious in those coats.
I was just struck over and over again yesterday by how normal and genuine and warm and loving these two families are. Such a refreshing change of pace from the stiff, fake, empty and try-hard Trumps.
Yes this struck me too. Night and day. There was zero humanity or human feeling about trump’s inauguration. Or his administration. No love, no affection, nothing. I mean, what a difference.
You said what I was thinking, Darla. Night and day differences. Even Mother Nature highlighted the difference! It was cold but it was nice having a bit of sunshine for the inauguration.
Yeah, I had no idea who she was until later, and I thought it was kind of much. I generally like plaid but didn’t really like the collar. I was fine with the rhinetones or whatever was on the chest and shoulders
Esmom- there’s great footage of Joe holding his grandson Beau and dancing while watching the concert. Never once in 4 years did we see Trump hold his grandkids or play with them or even give them any affection really. In fact, I saw Trump hug his grandma while leaving yesterday, and it was awkward af, like he was hugging a stranger.
They named the baby Beau? That’s touching. Adorable baby.
Aw, I just saw the video – adorable!
Who was the girl with them that had silver boots? Anyone id her?
Was it one of the Biden granddaughters?
She’s Kamala’s niece, Meena Harris. The two little girls are hers.
For me the grandnieces stole the show. They are adorable!
Absolutely! They’re just so cute and seem full of personality
The nieces and their dad carrying the younger one.
They are super cute! I follow Meena on social media, she’s pretty great, and has posted some wonderful photos of VP Harris with her grand nieces.
The coat isn’t my style and it’s not something I would wear. But that’s not important and I still thought she looked good.
LOVED this coat. Her and Natalie Biden’s were my favs.
This reminded me of the Biden grandkids! I loved seeing their outfit-mask coordinated in a Nancy Pelosi-esque fashion. Ashley Biden’s coat looked great for me.
Ashley looked amazing overall but the tuxedo she wore later that night. O My God
@cecilia it reminded me of Angelina Jolie’s similar fab look
A tux and a ponytail – I LOVE it.
There’s a great photo of a bunch of them at the Lincoln Memorial, and one of the granddaughters is wearing a very pretty dress and sneakers. I love that too. My feet ached in sympathy for Dr. Flotus yesterday!
The coat is really great the only thing I didn’t like was the stark white collar just too much (big) for my taste. I think it would have been better had it been brown or burgundy but then it would have been traditional. I understand that. She’s a hipster wearing designer.
I thought that collar was a sort of, dare I say it, Katie Keen touch.
Wait, no social distance?
On a superficial note, I love all the coats. I don’t know if the monocrome looks were planned, but everyone looked flawless.
I was surprised by how much non-distancing was going on. BUT they were outside. Fingers crossed everyone stays healthy
A long time ago, I read that Queen Elizabeth usually dresses in monochrome to make it easier for her security team to see where she is in a crowd. I wonder if that’s also the explanation here?
Bernie was the only compliant person 🙂
So much touching as well, but I think it’s the excitement that makes people resort back to what is natural and second nature for them.
I heard on the news that everyone at the event was supposed to show proof of a negative test within the previous 48 hours.
I must say I felt the same, there was a LOT of hugging going on and barely any social distancing which didn’t make sense to me given the age of a lot of attendees. I know they were all tested twice in the 72 hours leading up to the inauguration but social distancing should still have been followed and especially no hugging!
I assume everyone was tested repeatedly and very careful, and many of the politicians have been vaccinated already, but I did worry a little with each hug and conversation up close.
Another great coat! Y’all should check out her insta as well…she seems so cool!
Can we talk about that eyebrow thing?? I don’t know if that was genuinely at Pence or just clever editing but I love it.
I’m also very impressed by her ability to do that.
Ella’s mom said that the eyebrow wiggle was actually directed at her.
Ella Emhoff has quite the speaking eyebrows. They were saying, what a lot were probably thinking seeing Mother’s Boy and Mother there.
I loved that picture of Harris’ niece (grandniece?) with Hillary Clinton. It so adorable. You can feel how thrilled she was.
Also recommend to read the thread following Meena Harris’ tweet. It’s a wonderful read.
It also is such a relief, that a sane person is in control over the nuclear codes again.
I know of VP Harris ( I LOVE WRITING THIS) sister Maya because she use to work for Hillary Clinton.
The Harris sisters involvement in politics runs deep and Maya was a teenage mother to Meena and she has spoken about the work that entailed so it doesn’t surprise me that she went on to work for HRC.
It was a wonderful day. I must admit, on a superficial level, I wanted to see Hilary with a more pulled together look. She’s got the resources. Unfortunately the coat looked like she simply grabbed her winter coat on the way out the door. I don’t want her to try to compete – just look like the powerful, pulled together woman she is.
I’ve never seen an extended family that looks like mine before! Indian, Caucasian, Haitian, French, Russian Jewish, and throw in some Taiwanese since my step-daughter’s mom in from Taiwan. It’s like the United Nations 🙂
I’m as WASP as they come but my mother’s grandkids are half of a number of things…..Irish, Indian, Jewish, Ukrainian, and Russian. My husband is Jewish as are my two kids (raised in the religion). My daughter lives in Brooklyn and she is the same age as Ella. I think she would fangirl pretty hard over her!
I’m so glad you featured this. I literally almost screamed with joy when I saw that coat, it is FABULOUSNESS. She is incredibly stylish!
So do the grandkids of the president get SS detail? The adult step child of the VP? I just ask because it seems like they are just normal people living normal lives and I’m genuinely curious how that works with SS detail. Like, just chillin at this artsy thing in Brooklyn with my security?
Exquisite. This young woman has so much style. All the ladies looked amazing but I actually gasped when I saw her.
Funny I thought Ella was at FIT, and yes the little ones were adorable…
It’s nice to see normal families…very nice.
Is the collar part of the Miu Miu design or something Emhoff added? I don’t totally hate it, but I would want a collar that matched the rest of the coat fabric myself (in fantasyland where I can afford Miu Miu coats, or course).
I remember Ella talking about Kamala at the DNC and how warm and effusive she was about her stepmother and her enthusiasm and calling her Momala. A quick look at her Instagram and she’s the quintessential Brooklyn Generation Z hipster, wearing knit pants and dresses she made herself (stuff I wouldn’t be caught dead in a million years). But she’s clearly got a very defined sense of style! Obviously wearing a knit outfit to the inauguration would not have been appropriate (plus those won’t keep you warm), but she managed to be herself while wearing a unique and memorable coat. I’m not a fan of hipster style yet I loved that coat on her and she rocked it.
Character, honor, integrity, grace, style. CHIGS. They have it. The former did not. I’m breathing again.
That coat and that collar are so atypical of American political events. Ella pulls it off fabulously. A normal person like me would look like an idiot. Sort of like when Kate Middleton wears those giant collars and everyone goes “EW”. It takes a very specific person to make the look work.
Curly f*%#ing hair, finally! Enough with ironing for events.
How come I’m the only one that sees that the collar is a tribute to the late, great RBG?!?
The coat was ugly, but her posture and confidence stood out to me.
