Sex and the City fashion: totally ’80s

In case you hadn’t heard, the Sex and the City movie is filming all over the place. Can’t you just hear Sarah Jessica Parker’s girlish scream and she runs in her four-inch Monolos? Oh, yes. And for this film, no one seems to be concerned about spoilers are revealing whatever meager plotlines or anything like that. Every time I see a picture from the set (“the set” = Manhattan), I just think “Thank God I’m not going to have to pay to see this movie.”

Most of these pictures have been all over the place, and many of you have probably seen them, but here they are all in one place! It seems we’re going to be treated to some kind of Sex and the City: Totally ‘80s flashback sequence. I’ve said it before, but my favorite has always been Miranda. I’m getting a kick out of her ‘80s blowout, shoulder pads and Working Girl gear. And is that a bowl cut I spy? She looks amazing, but oh, no. Honey, just no. Also – is it weird that 1980s Charlotte (Kristen Davis) does not look any different? Her kind of prim-and-proper yuppie style really doesn’t look weird – she ends up looking classic.

I could do without Sarah Jessica Parker’s Madonna-esque girdle-as-outerwear look, but I’m kind of digging the flash of flannel. It’s like Carrie Bradshaw knew grunge was coming, and she wanted to give Seattle (the other “sexy city”) a shout-out. Carrie is such a trendsetter.

Of course, the best ‘80s transformation goes to Kim Cattrall. I’m not even sure what this look is. Debbie Harry meets Joey Ramone meets Vivenne Westwood? Is it supposed to be punk? Is it supposed to be glam? Is it supposed to be this hideous? Believe it or not, I remember parts of the 1980s – my age was in the single digits, but I don’t remember women’s fashion being this horrible. Where’s the old-school Gianni Versace? Where are the parachute pants? Can a girl get some jelly bracelets?

Here are the girls filming in Manhattan yesterday. Images thanks to WENN.com and Fame Pictures .

I’m looking forward to meeting my g/f’s sharing cosmos and watching a total fluff film.

(Yes, I am actually that shallow = )

  4. TaylorB says:

Miranda looks awesome. From the suit w/Reeboks, to the awful hairdo… Love it.

  5. lola says:

Ok for 80s Samantha could they have not just referenced, um, KIM CATTRELL???? She was a porkies icon. And big trouble little china. And police academy. Surely she has some fashionable pap pics from the era instead of that dreadful get up. she looks like a cartoon.

  6. Mairead says:

lola – I so totally agree. She was stunning and stylish in the 80s. Not this mess of a hair rock reject.

I know they’re going for the early 80s, but CHRIST!!!

  7. danielle says:

Um…not to be mean…but what are they doing to their faces to make them look the right age?

  8. Goddess711 says:

Y’gotta be kidding me. This looks like an 80’s theme party at a retirement home! WTF is this?
SJP as Madonna looks like an old Madonna before Madonna started looking like the leathered veiny ancient bag that she looks like now.
I already don’t want to see this sh**, the writers are idiots. The first movie sucked, these a**holes are completely taking the greatness out of the series.
    DEPRESSING SH** MAN!!!

  9. Polkasox says:

That hair/makeup/bow makes SJP look ooooooold.

  10. Eileen Yover says:

Ugh Kim Catrall looks OLDER than she normally does! Bring back Mannequin! Booyah!

  11. April says:

God almighty that is all just an eyesore.

I’m surprised they didn’t go a little more Vivienne Westwood’s “new romantic” with Samantha or something. There was one scene in the 1st movie where Samantha is wearing that heavy shoulder-padded white dress with dolman sleeves and blunt bang wig (I think)…that seems more on the mark for her. The big hair is fine.

I remember some girls emulating Madonna while wearing that get-up Carrie has on..but not grown women. There were craploads of quirky “colorful” styles that seem to be more fitting to Carrie’s personality.

I think it would have been fun to see Miranda with longer hair, more contrary to what she has now. Like along the lines of Melanie Griffith in Working Girl. I also think it would have been more fun to see Charlotte in a bit of a role reversal, before she found her “classic”-ness.

Not everything about the 80’s was hideous….otherwise we wouldn’t be seeing a resurgence of leggings, jelly shoes, peter-pan boots, and off the shoulder T’s.

This movie looks like it’s going to be a total suckfest. Why are they dressed in horrid 80s clothes but they still look like they’re pushing 50? Couldn’t they have at least attempted some better makeup to try to de-age them? It just looks totally stupid. I won’t be paying to see it. The first movie sucked anyway. These films are doing a disservice to the show.

  14. moo says:

A group of ugly OLD bitches trying to make us all believe it was almost 30 years ago? Huh??? Oh, this movie will be reallllly bad.

  15. Just a Poster says:

Kristen looks wonderful! Does that woman ever age?

And what on earth did they to to Kim??

  16. crazytalk says:

I agree, it’s ridiculous that they are trying to have a flashback to almost 30 years ago with their 50 year-old faces? It’s like they’re all just laughing at the audience for buying this crap. Bad enough the plot of the last movie was complete nonsense, they’re going to have a flashback to the 80s in this one?! Stupid. Just plain stupid.

  17. Andrea says:

there are no words for the level of seething hatred i feel for all things SATC. so many levels. so incredibly sexist. i cannot believe they are making ANOTHER movie. god, let this crapfest die already. INCREDIBLY SEXIST.

  18. Aviatrix says:

Oh my! Wow, I agree with the above posters on how bad the makeup looks. Fashion choices could be less retarded and honestly how stupid do the writers think we are? Carrie is supposed to be what 43 and I was born in 1983 so we’re supposed to believe this old hag is 17 at the youngest? B*tch please.

  19. kimberly says:

ya someone should tell them the 80’s part II is over . . .

  20. danielle says:

all i have to say is

kim cattrall was stunningly beautiful. these “80s” pictures remind me of the sad examples of age-inappropriateness that I see on “What Not to Wear.” i feel so bad for her. 🙁

  21. Stephie says:

Heh, I am SO glad we’re not in the 80’s anymore. This is going to be fun. They all look great, funny, but great. Bring on the 70’s and 90’s too. Why not?

  22. TaylorB says:

    Just a Poster,

I am with you on Kristin Davis, the woman seems to be ageless. No offense to the others but they look way too long in the tooth to pull of an 80’s flashback gracefully.

  23. 4Real says:

They all look ridiculous. Happy Halloween!
