Maybe I was paying attention to tennis, but was there any advanced buzz about the Super Bowl performers before the game? It came as a complete surprise to me that H.E.R. was there to sing “America the Beautiful.” I was also surprised by the Aerosmith-like rock arrangement! It was a good performance though, her voice is beautiful and I was pleasantly surprised by how well the song worked with that arrangement.
For the National Anthem, country star Eric Church performed with Jazmine Sullivan. Jazmine killed it. Eric Church… uh, did not kill it. Jazmine was tasked with saving that white dude. Jazmine’s beautiful white suit was by New York fashion house Area, and supposedly her look was a tribute to Whitney Houston.
And here’s the pre-recorded segment about racism and BLM where Alicia Keys sings the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
Also, what did everyone think of Hologram Vince Lombardi? I didn’t mind the “voiceover” aspect of it, but the actual CGI/Hologram Lombardi was kind of freaky. The technology hasn’t been perfected, you guys, we’re still dealing with the creepy Uncanny Valley situation.

I love H.E.R. and I can’t believe she’s only 23 years old. She’s incredible.
I will never ever forget Whitney Houston’s 1991 performance. She was there to sing. It wasn’t a show and se set the bar so damn high, few if any (IMHO) have touched that bar. I love that performance so much that I had it play on You Tube for my kids. Damn I sound old. RIP Whitney,
H.E.R. was fantastic.
I did not care for that rendition of the anthem. That dude trying to turn it into a country song… Don’t do that.
Also I never like hologram stuff or commercials made with people who have passed away, and have no say in what their likeness is doing or promoting.
I liked H.E.R. and her outfit too! The national anthem was OK. Jasmine did a great job. I always think Eric Church sounds like WIllie Nelson, which is fine but not for the star spangled banner.
My husband recognized the hologram as Vince Lombardi. My FIL, who is a serious football fan was like….who is that? Who is that supposed to be? He was so confused. LOL
The only reason I know of Tom Lombardi was because we watched King of the Hill like 25 years ago. He was a centerpiece. Otherwise I would have had NO idea. And I like football.
Tom Landry, the late Dallas Cowboys coach, was a running bit of humor in KOTH.
Vince Lombardi, the late Green Bay Packers coach, was the hologram and was not part of KOTH.
I’m a moron, and mixed up the names. Tom Landry. Clearly my King of the Hill watching did not make as big an impact. And I say that with all seriousness. Thank you for correcting me.
I loved H.E.R. and I actually thought that pairing of artists was cool for the anthem, too.
And okay, I had NO idea that was supposed to be Vince Lombardi. The “hologram” just looked like a CGI character talking on a small TV screen? I didn’t understand it at all lol.
Agree, Vince Lombardi came off creepy. Holograms…we just aren’t there yet. And unfortunately for a lot of us, we have heard the name but we really don’t know the visual anyway? Maybe he was an awkward hologrammy kind of guy? LOL just kidding.
Jazmine Sullivan was leaps and bounds better than Eric church. It was a little disconcerting how they were vocally so unmatched, and how easily it was for her to out sing him. She literally did all the work.
I’ve always kind of liked Eric Church (I don’t know his politics though) but he definitely doesn’t have a national anthem voice. There were a lot of other country dudes they could have picked from if that’s the demographic they felt they needed to target.
The national anthem is an incredibly hard song to sing correctly. Jazmine did so and the fact she was able after he massacred his part was miraculous.
I truly listen to all different types of music and if they were going with a country artist there so many others that would have been better.
I loved those performances but I wanted to see more of the man signing. His expressions and signing gave me joy.
“that man” signing was Warren “Wawa” Snipe.
It would be wonderful that with all the wokeness people were actually more aware of Deaf and HoH people. Inclusion and all that..captions y’all.. it’s high time.✌
Jazmine’s voice gives me all types of feelings. I feel happy then I cry then I get overwhelmed?.. I haven’t been that moved by an artist in years. I’ve loved her from the beginning! (Dolly Parton does but it’s her voice. I love to listen to her old interviews. Give me chills. Also, I am weird.
H.E.R. and Jazmine Sullivan were fantastic.
Eric Church was alright, but it seems like his voice was overwhelmed by hers. Or maybe they weren’t able to rehearse together enough.
Anyway, I read a joke on twitter that Eric Church’s name in Spanish is Enrique Iglesias and now that’s all I’m going to remember about him. lol
She’s very beautiful and very talented but I was not down with her performance. I thought it was too performish. (And the country guy was meh.)
I honestly had never heard of H.E.R. before last night (apparently I’m old and out of touch already at 33), but she freaking nailed it. No over the top embellishments, just letting her voice speak for itself. Gorgeous.
