We know that Michelle Obama has not been sitting idly by during her quarantine. Although I just learned that she finished filming Waffles + Mochi prior to lockdown, we knew that the Obama girls came home to refill their empty nest. Of course Michelle spend a good portion of her time helping to get Donald Trump out of the White House. She also read to kids to give parents a much-needed break and launched a podcast. But what else did she do with her time? It turns out Michelle took up kitting and perfected her swim stroke.
While Sasha and Malia got into cooking (“they love the freedom of being in the kitchen, creating, experimenting,” their mom reports), Mrs. Obama used the endless months at home to teach herself to knit. And now she’s hooked.
“Knitting is a forever proposition You don’t master knitting, because once you make a scarf, there’s the blanket. And once you do the blanket, you’ve got to do the hat, the socks. … I could go on about knitting!” she says.
(Indeed, President Obama told PEOPLE in November that he already owned several bespoke hats by his wife: “She can crank those out.”)
And then there’s swimming.
“Over quarantine, I actually did teach myself how to be a better lap swimmer, because what I’m finding in my old age is that the high-impact stuff that I used to do, as I’m approaching 60, it just doesn’t work. So I thought, well, swimming is one of those low-impact, good cardio things,” Mrs. Obama says. “I worked myself up to almost a mile of swimming laps. Now, can I do that right this second? No. But this summer, I’m getting back into the pool.”
If I live a hundred lives I will still never be as accomplished as Michelle Obama is in this one. She’s right about the pool and swimming. It is such a great exercise because it uses every muscle, and it keeps so much pressure off your joints. Plus I think I Zen out more when I swim than when I walk or run. But my four-mile walk route is right outside my front door and the pool is two miles away at the Y. It always becomes a convenience thing. Guess I’ll just have to make a ton of money and buy that house with the lap pool in the backyard.
As for knitting, I tried it when I was pregnant. I made something, I can’t remember what. It wasn’t good, whatever it was. But I love the idea of knitting and I swear I will try again. I’ll bet Michelle starts auctioning off her knit goods to small charities. Did anyone watch M*A*S*H? Loretta Swit, who played Maj. Margaret Houlihan, is a huge animal advocate. She used to donate needlepoint items she’d done to animal charities. My mom was president to one and Loretta donated something every year to our Christmas auction. As soon as Barack’s shelf is full, I’ll bet Michelle’s hats start spreading the love. I adore Michelle censoring herself so as not to run on about knitting. OMG – she needs to have Krysten Ritter on her podcast and devote the whole hour to knitting. It would be amazing. That settles it, I’m definitely taking up knitting so that I can join a stitch ‘n bitch club with Michelle Obama and Krysten Ritter. Who’s with me?

Whenever I hear about a celebrity knitter/crocheter I have to wonder if they’re on Ravelry. I completely lost my knitting mojo during the last year but I’ve been back to finishing some projects recently. Glad MO is sticking to it!
It’s serendipity that this article was posted- I recently thought about trying to learn to knit or crochet… do you have source suggestions for beginners? TYVM
YouTube! I learned how to crochet when I was a kid but I taught myself to knit by watching YT videos, and I still use it all the time to look up different techniques.
@BUTTERFLY My mom taught me to knit and crochet when I was a kid as well. I went back 30 years later to YouTube to refresh my memory. simplydaisy was really helpful to me for crocheting. Then google when I come across an unfamiliar stitch. Some patterns will have special stitch instructions too.
I’ve learned crochet over lockdown and it’s so therapeutic. I donate my blankets to a local nursing home. There’s many “blankets for charity” type charities, best Google your local one.
To learn crochet I used Bella Coco on YouTube, she’s great. Do note there’s American and UK terms, which is initially confusing!
I learned how to knit last year by watching videos and reading books. I love the purlsoho.com videos because they’re short and sweet; no extraneous filler, sales pitches, or life stories. Just straight up knitting instructions. They also have a variety of free patterns, many of which are suitable to beginners to intermediates. Very pink.com also has loads of useful content but the videos can run a bit long.
I now want to see what kind of knitting MO has been doing. Is she into colorwork? Lace? Cables? Has she ventured into sweaters? I can see her making some awesome sweaters. Definitely want her to be a guest on Krysten Ritter’s podcast so we can find out more…
If you want to learn how to crochet. I suggest Toni of Tl yarn crafts. She has a YouTube channel and a website. Very good teacher!
I love crocheted 100% cotton dishcloths. The first one i did looked like a lampshade. Now they come out ok and it is so satisfying to create a useful everyday object.
In addition to Roserose’s suggestion of blankets, please consider knitting twiddlemuffs for dementia patients. Plenty of free patterns on lovecrafts.com to start you off. A few of the kids in my class have taught themselves to knit and crochet during lockdown via TikTok, and especially enjoyed making the Harry Styles cardie.
I think Melissa Villasenor of SNL is a crocheter. I found that out when she was featured in Lion’s Instagram.
I’m a crocheter and took it up again during the pandemic. It is a very relaxing hobby.
We should start a Fans of Celebitchy knitting (and crochet) group on Ravelry!!!
I would join that club but how amazing would that be with krysten ritter as her Chloe character from “don’t trust the b….in apt 23”???
When I grow up, I want to be Michelle Obama.
I’m so happy she’s doing better mentally. The WH years and pandemic really took a toll on her. Live your best life, forever FLOTUS!
I used to love swimming when I was younger but now I’m too attached to working out with music or an audio book, which doesn’t work well in a pool.
Yeah, I used to think so too. But my partner swims laps with his waterproof earbuds and loves it! So am determined to try. Because otherwise lap swimming can get very monotonous!
Hmm . . need to look into that. Do the waterproof ear buds work even when your phone is like 1,000 feet away in a locker?
As a longtime knitter this makes me so happy 🙂
I’m a swimmer and I miss it so much. All the pools here are shut down. I’m going crazy without it. It’s the thing I miss the most.
Michelle Obama is everything. She is just so amazing!
And I used to love seeing knitters on the NYC subway just plugging along during the boring commute. Great multitasking! It made me think I should take it up too. Would like to learn one day.
I just want to add how insanely envious I am of anyone with a pool.
My life goal is to have my own lap pool or live in a posh block with a private pool.
I need low impact exercise too and I havent been able to swim since September as all pools are closed for the public.
I would love to sit and knit with Michelle Obama. I love swimming, too, but there aren’t that many pools here, and they’re so crowded all the time, which grosses me out. I would put a pool in my yard in a heartbeat if we had the room and the money, but alas…I’ll just have to stick with knitting.
I really admire her so much. She just seems like a quality human who has contributed to this world in so many admirable ways but she also comes across as down-to-earth and approachable. I’ve tried knitting myself and it didn’t go so well. I just couldn’t get the hang of it for some reason. I’m a lefty and the person who tried to teach me was a righty. Maybe that was part of the problem. I would loooove to swim laps if I had access to a pool.
