Do you wear a watch? I don’t. I’ve never worn a watch in my adult life. There are clocks everywhere, and I’m usually carrying something (phone, iPod) with a clock. Plus, I think I just have a good sense of time? I can usually sense what time it is from my own internal clock. Still, tons of people wear watches and tons of people invest in quality timepieces. The Duchess of Sussex is one of those people. She has a favorite timepiece: a Cartier tank watch which she bought herself while she was on Suits. Even before she met Prince Harry, she planned to hand it down to a daughter one day.
Meghan Markle may have just recently announced the sex of her second child with Prince Harry, but she’s had a special gift ready to be passed down to her baby girl on the way for years. In a 2015 interview with Hello! magazine, the Duchess of Sussex revealed that she once splurged on a Cartier watch to celebrate her TV show Suits with the intention of turning it into a family heirloom.
“I’ve always coveted the Cartier French Tank watch,” she explained. “When I found out Suits had been picked up for our third season — which, at the time, felt like such a milestone — I totally splurged and bought the two-tone version.”
According to Meghan, she even had a personalized message engraved on the jewelry piece. “I had it engraved on the back, ‘To M.M. From M.M.’ and I plan to give it to my daughter one day,” she said. “That’s what makes pieces special, the connection you have to them.”
Meghan and Harry revealed they are expecting a baby girl — a little sister for their son Archie Harrison — during their sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey on Sunday.
“To have a boy then a girl — what more can you ask for?” Harry said during the TV special. The couple added that they will not be having anymore children following their baby girl’s arrival, saying, “Two is it.”
“Grateful, having any child, any one or a two would have been amazing, but to have a boy and then a girl … now we’ve got our family and we’ve got four of us,” Harry said.
I think Harry has always wanted two kids, but I wonder if Meghan ever thinks “well, maybe I could do one more.” She hasn’t really said that she’ll be content with just two, it’s always Harry saying that. Anyway, I love stories about legacy jewelry and pieces handed down through the generations. Meghan has a lot of personal jewelry which she’s probably looking forward to passing down, plus Harry has given her pieces from his mother’s personal collection, and now those pieces will be handed down to Lil’ Montecito too. *sob* But yeah, a Cartier Tank watch is a really lovely timepiece. Too bad I hate the feeling on anything on my wrist!

Alright everyone! Let’s start thinking of girl names that begin with M! I’ll start
Minnie
Maya
Madeline, Maya or Mia are my top ‘M’ choices.
Marie
@lauren in LOVE the name marie
Anything M as long as she keeps Meghan as a middle name 😁🤞 moreover as long as its her own name, just like Archie 👑
Meganovna
Megansdottir
(trying to follow the line of thought of Harrison as Archies’ middle name)
For MM:
Montecito Mountbatten
They can call her Monte
🙂
I don’t think the M was meant as a reference to the future daughter, she couldn’t have known her future daughter would have a last name of M, I think the meaning was more like a gift from herself to herself, like this is something I did all on my own for me, I earned this and bought this for me, I don’t need anyone else to do this for me. Especially if she bought it around the time when a past relationship was failing. And then along with that came the intention to pass it down, but I don’t think that was the original meaning of the inscription.
That being said, now that she is going to have a daughter with an M last name, it would make sense to give her the M first name too.
@Lola: You’re right the watch was a gift to herself.
Agreed, it was a gift to herself. I bought myself a special edition LV purse after I finalized my divorce. Nowhere near the same expense as the watch, but it felt so good to buy a luxury item all on my own for no reason other than I worked hard at my job and wanted it!
Exactly. And it probably means a lot more now, considering she ended up marrying an actual prince.
OMG so Archie is Harrison (harry’s son) and baby #2 is Mini-Meghan, too cute!
Do you think she’ll go with two syllables, to match the cadence of her name? What about:
Maddie (archie’s name isn’t Archibald, so instead of Madeline it’d be the shortened version)
Mattie
Mercy
Micah
Minka
Maybelle (if she’s born in May?)
Margot (sounds like Markle)
I LOVE the name Margot. I think it’s adorable.
I like the name Margot too. It always sounds sophisticated.
I love the name Margot but it’s what Princess Margaret was often called, and I doubt they want to go there.
Margo was the nickname for Princess Margaret within the Royal Family.
Marielle. It’s pretty and it’s timeless without sounding too stuffy or “old”.
Ooooo I love Marielle.
It was a surprise for me hear Harry say he only wanted two kids. I always tought he was the type of guy who would want a lot of kids(maybe 4).
It’s so sweet Meghan gets to pass down the watch. Archie can have the Diana one for his future wife.
I personally think that they will adopt from an African country in the future.
Can royals adopt? I’ve never heard of it happening. I guess they can do whatever they want but would they want to have that distinction between children who are in line for the throne and those that aren’t?
@woke: Nah, he told someone on an engagement either when Meghan was first pregnant or when they were just married that 5 children were too many so it wasn’t surprising when he told that Jane Goodall that he only wanted 2. Plus, it’s what he knows, going up with one sibling.
That’s what I like about her having Diana’s watch too – that each child will get one that has special meaning to them.
He’s said it for some time, so it’s not that surprising to me. Plus he’s big on the climate change problem and that probably factors into his feelings too.
OMG it’s FATE. I was about to say that “MM” could stand for Mini-Meghan because otherwise it implies that her daughter would have the last name Markle, but WAIT, Archie’s last name is Mountbatten-Windsor so it still works! *swoons forever*
I am not a watch wearer (except for my FitBit but that’s for sports purposes) but Cartier watches are lovely, definitely family heirloom material. I have two Cartier rings that I intend on passing on to my daughter should I have one.
I like Cartier and Hermès watches but I got an Apple Watch for Xmas so a fancy watch seems a bit pointless now. I had a Fitbit which I actually preferred over the Apple Watch but it’s a nice gift.
I wore a watch in high school and maybe college but stopped at some point. I got a new fitbit a while back, it’s been kind of hard going back to wearing something. I don’t like wearing rings or bracelets really. Also it’s a depressing watch that tells me I sit too much, LOL.
LOLing is good. Some experts have warned that added stress and negative feelings from living with a “snitch bitch” can outweigh the benefits!
When I first read that story, I’ve always wondered if Meghan didn’t have a daughter who she would give the watch to then? I’m glad she’s getting her wish.
To Archie for his future wife
Lets not assume the kid HAS to bê straight when he grows up. He might have a husband in the future. And thats ok!
Lil Montecito for HER wife.
My stepmum gave me her watch and it means so much. It’s something you wear literally every day.
I love my Apple Watch just to track my resting heart rate. I can tell when I getting improvements (or worsening when I have been noncompliant) from diet or exercise.
Their foundation name is Archewell, so I hope they name their daughter Elle. (Arche/w/Elle)
oooh, interesting
That’s such a cool idea. She can be Elle Frances Mountbatten-Windsor. Frances is the second name of Diana.
Oh I hope not. That name is so overused.
I love Marielle, as do I love Elle. I think “Elle” is better described as the prototype, I don’t think it is overused.
And I love Arche/w/Elle.
My husband got me a Citizen ecodrive watch for our second anniversary (nowhere near a Cartier, but it was a splurge for us since we had just graduated law school and were studying for the bar) and I really loved it but then a few years ago I got an Apple watch and I wear that all the time now. I do want a really significant watch (maybe for our 20th anniversary lol, I have plans) that I can pass down to nieces or daughters in law or a granddaughter, the Cartier ones are so pretty.
the snarky part of me loves that when Meghan is photographed wearing a Cartier watch, there’s always a discussion as to whether its the one she bought herself (the two tone) or Diana’s old watch
Marisol Mountbatten?
The power of words, If you can see it, it’s possible.
I’m still rooting for them to name the baby Regina.
Regina Diana and watch heads explode
😂
Elizabeth Regina. For spite.
Y’all “MM to MM” is Meghan Markle to Meghan Markle…. which is really awesome. And giving that to her daughter will be just as special if her name doesn’t start with a M.
This reminded me to put my watch on, LOL.
I love a good watch. I do make it a point to wear one. I know I have a smart phone and all, but a watch is just different somehow. I also have ADHD, and I have trouble visualizing how much time has gone by when it’s a digital watch or a clock, so it’s nice to have something analog I can refer to. I’m wearing a digital watch right now, but it’s bc the watch that I usually wear has a worn out strap, and my grandpa got that one for me for a birthday, and I’m waiting to replace the strap. I’m paranoid it’ll fall off my wrist and I’ll lose it.
I’ve never been particularly interested in *expensive* watches before though, until I read abt Meghan wanting to pass down her Cartier watch to her daughter. That made me look up how much her watch cost, and honestly…I’m kinda into it. I’m annoyed w/ myself about it, bc I hate the idea of expensive watches for some reason. I like vintage, I like antiques, I can see myself getting one of those (maybe even a pocket watch some day), but like, I don’t want spend thousands of dollars on something that, for me, is still largely about functionality rather than statement. But……..I still want a Cartier Tank watch. I like the aesthetic of it. I guess I better start saving up the pennies.
I love that she bought herself an heirloom gift based on her success. To a MUCH smaller scale, I want to go to Tiffany’s and buy myself the heart charm when I make my first business sale in NYC (#goals!) The pictures of Meghan and the family always make me smile!
I wear a watch nearly every day; I don’t feel dressed if I leave the house without one. I’m extremely lucky in that my mother has already passed down a few nice ones. I alternate between three dailies: two tiny leather-banded gold Omegas that my mother bought herself at 18 in 1969 on her first trip to Geneva and a lucite brown Gucci that a nearly-married-him lover gifted her in the mid 70s. I am so pleased and grateful to be handed down such things from my mother with all the history and stories behind them.
Ooh, I love my Raymond Weil watch and plan to hand it down to my daughter too.
I thought the same thing! Archie & Ellie!
Or maybe a name that starts with M and ends in ‘elle! Michelle? Mirabelle?
But my biased preference is Annabelle. Archie & Annie!
I DO hope she names her that! My daughter’s nickname is Ellie and she was born a few months before Baby Montecito! My son was born a few months before Archie! I feel like Meghan and I are just…leading parallel lives (minus the prince/racist in-laws/world famous/super wealthy aspects).
