The SAG Awards aired last night on TNT. They were pretaped, virtual and just one hour long, which was awesome. You could tell that they were cutting some acceptance speeches short, which is fine. I’m completely ok with that. It had the feel of a live ceremony because everyone was zooming in. They also had really entertaining and well edited segments from the celebrities at home talking about this exceptional year. Unfortunately, because everything was pretaped, the winners in most of the categories were leaked ahead of time. Viola Davis took home best actress for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, you can see her acceptance speech below. With her win at the SAGs, there’s now no true frontrunner for the Oscars. It seems like a toss up between Frances McDormand and Viola!
There were so many actresses in bright solid gowns last night. It seems to be a real trend for spring. Viola was in a bright green custom Louis Vuitton dress with amazing rows of mirrored sequins on the shoulders and running down each side. That detail is perfect for a look the audience sees from the waist up. Look at how gorgeous she is and check out the side view.
Kaley Cuoco also rocked a bright gown, a Prabal Gurung off the shoulder dress with low puff sleeves and a bell skirt. Kaley was nominated for performance in a comedy series for her work in The Flight Attendant, which went to Catherine O’Hara. I feel like she should have been nominated in the drama category. I love this look and how serene she is.
Catherine O’Hara was in a Thom Browne suit with a sequin fishtail skirt. You can see her acceptance speech here!
Carey Mulligan was in a custom black and white Prada gown with clean lines. This might not be her year to win an Oscar but I suspect we’ll be seeing a lot more of her.
Simone Ledward, Chadwick Boseman’s widow, was in a bright yellow and green Christopher John Rogers gown. I love this look. In her acceptance speech for Chadwick, she recited a quote from him. “If you see the world unbalanced, be a crusader that pushes heavily on the see saw of the mind.” She has been incredible this awards season and we’ll be seeing her again at the Oscars.
Here’s Viola’s speech!

Every single woman in this post hit it out of the park. Gorgeous. I love Kaley, but could never quibble with O’Hara’s win. I still miss Moira. I will always miss Moira. And yeah, Kaley should have been nominated in the drama category.
Viola Davis – WOW. I’ll be rooting for her at the Oscars.
Viola is just my ultimate girl crush. She looks amazing in anything and is so effing talented that I just can’t!
She’s so beautiful- that bright lime looks amazing on her.
Not sure I like the pseudo- reptile skin detailing, though.
Viola looks glorious. I really didn’t like her performance though.
Nor did I.
Viola looks amazing. I would look so horrible in that color but she is rocking it.
I think this is my favorite look Viola has ever worn! That color is just beautiful on her, and the cut of it is really modern and fun.
I’m a toss up on who should win the Oscar. Viola’s performance stands out much more to me, but she didn’t carry her film the way Frances did; Ma Rainey had a great ensemble. Still, there’s something I can’t quite warm to about Frances.
Love these ladies but not the gowns so much. Not a fan of chartreuse colors except maybe for 80s beach wear. Had a lovely chartreuse oversized button down in the 90s, but it was muted, a dirty chartreuse. The flower front and center distracts me, because the pink is screaming…it has nowhere to go but in my face lol. And I’ve seen Catherine much more comfortable and easy. Cary is fine.
After the year we’ve all had, all the gorgeous, vibrant colors on display last night made me so happy. And if I were a celeb, I don’t know if I’d ever want to go back to traditional award show formats. Putting on a fancy dress and getting my hair and makeup done, while still being able to lounge around the house, just steps away from a freezer full of Ben & Jerry’s to console me when I lose? Awesome.
Also, seeing all the Instagram posts, I’m amazed that all these women were able to resist the temptation to share an impatient, cross-armed, eye rolling, “oh my God, just take the stupid picture, Dad!” pre-prom photo.
Viola is stunning, per usual.
Her Oscar win should happen for no other reason than she did not win for Doubt and this will correct that. Frances already had two best actress wins.
I said what I said.
Viola looks amazing!
Viola is always and forever STUNNING. I love how she takes risks and doesn’t fall into the boring safe black gown habit.
Love love love Viola. However I don’t think I have ever seen her do an interview or accept an award without her husband being in the picture with a look on his face that says ‘this award is also mine’. I wish he could just butt out and let her have her moment.
The work she put in to Ma Rainey was much more substantial than Nomadland. I’d argue Carey and Vanessa also did more than Frances. So Viola for Best Actress
