Emmys 2009: Winners, losers & highlights

emmy_press_room_62_wenn2582
Before I get into the winners and losers, I just want to say a word about the host of the ceremony, Neil Patrick Harris. He was a brilliant choice as the host of the 2009 Emmys. He was funny, he was old-school, he was respectful, yet he infused the ceremony with an edgy vein. During the opening song, and in his first introduction, his voice was shaking, and he seemed very nervous, but after that, he was very good. It seemed at times like he was improvising, especially when he lost the Best Supporting Actor Emmy to Jon Cryer. NPH riffed on losing, and they cut to Cryer in the press room, and NPH was able to mock Cryer live. It was hilarious. I also liked the Doctor Horrible “break-in” piece – I thought it was going to be cheesy, but it worked. It took me more than an hour to figure out the running gag of talking about actors’ weird credits, but it was funny. My other favorite NPH moment was in the opening song, when he mentioned Christina Hendricks’ curves (Joan on Mad Men), then got distracted by Jon Hamm. It was great. NPH should get the Oscars gig – but he won’t.

Onto the winners and losers:

Best Music & Lyrics: opening song of the Oscars, sung by Hugh Jackman
Outstanding Variety Show: The Daily Show

My personal highlights included:

* The first winner of the night, Kristin Chenoweth, and her sweet, emotional speech. She’s such a cute little hobbit, and I loved when she used her speech to try to get work on Mad Men or 24.

*Jon Cryer’s win for Best Supporting Actor – he was an underdog, and the look of pride on Charlie Sheen’s face was surprisingly nice. Plus, NPH played up the fake anger so much at Cryer having beaten him, Cryer got extra press.

*Everything about Ricky Gervais. From his mocking of the general attractiveness of television actors, to the specific mocking of Steve Carrell and Rainn Wilson, Ricky can do no wrong. Loved that Ricky presented the award to his friend Jon Stewart, who then noted in his speech that The Daily Show team was “better looking than Ricky Gervais”. Scratch what I said about NPH – Ricky Gervais should be the host of an awards show.

*This isn’t really a highlight, but what is going on with Jessica Lange’s face? It’s not just Botox, right? Botox wouldn’t make it look like that. I thought she was going to give herself a stroke trying to raise an eyebrow.

* I loved that Lost won something, and I loved that it was Michael Emerson (Ben). His little speech was prepared, but it was classy. I loved that he spoke about the role as “a character actor’s dream”. Sometimes I wonder if Americans ever make good character actors. Everyone wants to be the lead.

* It was great to see Michael J. Fox. He looks healthy. I wondered if he would show up, and it’s great to see him. I was surprised that he did not get a standing ovation.

* Dude, “Mother Lover” lost! Poor Justin Timberlake. Even I think “Mother Lover” was far superior to whatever the hell that Hugh Jackman Oscar thing was.

* Sarah McLaughlin singing “We Will Remember You” over the “In Memoriam” section. At first I was like “WTF?” But it worked. Better than Queen Latifah at the Oscars.

*MAD MEN!!! So happy they won. I’m sad that Jon Hamm, Elizabeth Moss and John Slattery didn’t pick up acting awards, but I’m glad the show picked up Best Drama and Best Writing. And Mad Men’s creator, Matt Weiner had one of the best lines of the night: “When you get something like this, it makes writing look fun, and it’s not.”

Pushing Daisies was a great show and I’m glad that Kristen won an award for it. Olive Snook is one of the best characters in comedy and she could’ve been a very unlikeable and cliched character but KC brought a real depth and sympathy to her.

  2. Diane says:

Drew and Jessica were extraordinary in Grey Gardens, pleased to see it was acknowledged, as well as, Ken Howard.

  3. Ash says:

I’m glad Hugh Jackman’s performance won. I thought the commentary was funny when he said “the first Wolverine to win” or something like that. Cracked me up.

I thought Kristin Chenoweth was adorable and I’m so glad Michael Emerson won – Ben’s awesome!

  4. Firestarter says:

I thought Grey Garden’s was a very good movie.

Glad Mad Men won and actually pleased that Bryan Cranston won for Breaking Bad. He is very good in that show. If Jon had to lose, I am glad it was to him.

Didn’t watch the Emmy’s. Too busy watching some of the shows that were nominated.

  5. Kelly says:

So happy that Toni Collette won. That role is like four wrapped into one, and she does it so well

  6. Firestarter says:

Poor Elizabeth Moss- BAD dress choice.

  7. ses says:

Great ceremony overall – I liked how they condensed categories: comedy, then variety, etc.

Least-favorite moment: Vanessa Williams during the supporting comedic actress announcements. I thought that was a hilarious Amy Poehler-type idea for them to all wear glasses but Vanessa mouthed a vehement “NO” into the camera, completely not participating. Vanessa, you don’t come in character to the Emmys…I guess you just ARE a megabitch.

  8. Ash says:

I also loved that Nathan Fillion made an appearance, that man can do no wrong.

  9. Jessica says:

Loved Neil Patrick Harris! And yes, Mother Lover should have won! It seems like there are three long-term locks at the Emmys: the Amazing Race, the Daily Show, and the Oscars. Tina Fey’s little speech next to JT about Lorne was great. On another note, the commentator (is that the PC Guy?) was very funny throughout as well.

  10. BitterBetty says:

Why is Justin Timberlake holding an Emmy?

  11. Firestarter says:

@Bitter Betty- He won for being a host on SNL or something to do with an appearance on SNL!

  12. Hieronymus Grex says:

Congratulations to everyone who’s pop culture experience has somehow been validated by a panel of total strangers.

    🙄

  13. Mairead says:

I’m delighted that Kristin won – she’s a great comedic actress, and Olive is one of my favourite characters for years and Pushing Daisies was a brilliant comedy. but presumably it was far too original for Hollywood 🙄

But wait, no love for Brendan Gleeson Kaiser? I’ve not seen “Churchill” yet, but I’m glad he won anyway as he was robbed (ROBBED!) at the Globes by that Farrell fella last year 😉

I love the fact that the casting of Brendan is as Churchill is somewhat ironic. Ireland is generally ambivalent towards Churchill partly over the bargaining of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921 and his pissy attitude about Ireland’s neutrality in WW2 even we helped the Allies except in the signing over of the sea-ports. So an Irishman playing him is ironic in that sense, given he didn’t like us that much. But the other twist in casting Brendan is that his first big break was playing Michael Collins in The Treaty miniseries. As Collins signed the Anglo-Irish Treaty negotiated with Lloyd-George and Churchill et al.

The comment about character actors vs. the lead – Brendan I guess would be seen as a character actor, but what characters! I suppose the lead tends to have to be “the hero” or “the anti-hero”, it’s the other characters who get to be interesting.

  14. Fat Elvis says:

Bryan Cranston takes brilliance to another level on “Breaking Bad.” I know that sounds corny as hell, but the man is nothing short of incredible on that show and his Emmy is well deserved.

  15. apsutter says:

I cant believe jon cryer won…what a crock. I remember thinking that it was such a category loaded with awesome people that the only person I felt for sure wouldnt win was him. Ugh….I hate when shitty shows get rewarded. I cant wait to see what colbert says about losing…should be a good time

  16. BitterBetty says:

    @ Firestarter: seriously? lol

    @ Hieronymus Grex: LOL!

jessica lange’s face is terrifying. it actually makes me hurt to look at her eyebrows.

  18. Carena says:

Justin Timberlake got an Emmy for his skits on SNL. He’s been on the show many times and had two skits that he wrote and performed with Andy Samberg go viral. I’m surprised you haven’t seen them. If you want to YouTube them they are called “D*ck in a Box” and “Motherlover.”

  19. georgiagrl says:

The show and winners were BORING!

  20. la chica says:

if Vanessa was in character, then it made sense that she would refuse to cooperate. Wilemina wouldn’t be caught dead obstructing her beauty. what’s left of it.

congrats to Kristin. loved her on Frasier, love her now.

  21. Maria86 says:

Michael Emerson won his Emmy. That’s all I needed to know. I’m good to go now. 🙂

  22. Tiffany says:

I have to say as far as the Emmy’s go. People who seem genuine, surprised or otherwise won and rightfully so. Micheal Emerson, I remember him from The Practice and dude does creepy well but in interviews he is smart, kind and seems like an easy interview. Toni Collette, always like her and glad that she got her due. Kristen C., cute as a button. Ken Howard, did not know about the kidney donor, class move thanking the woman who gave it to him. Jon Cryer, I know a lot of people did not think that he won, but that man has been holding down Two and the Half Men for awhile now. The kid who plays his son cannot hold all the scenes.

Neil Patrick Harris, the man had proven once again how he can just kick a** as anything that is thrown at him. Then I found out that he was a producer for this show which explains why things were going well. I was reading an article about him starting that he will be the first openly gay ‘A-list’ star. That is tiresome because this man has so much talent that his sexuality is an afterthought. His sexuality will not define him in the years to come and that in itself is ‘legen-wait for it-dary.’

Can I just say what a aid to seek out someone who actually is aware of what theyre speaking about on the internet. You definitely know the best way to bring an issue to gentle and make it important. More folks have to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more common because you undoubtedly have the gift. ;#G buy meratol Jc1>d
