Emmys fashion: Blake Lively, Drew Barrymore & what’s left of Jessica Lange

Generally, Emmy fashion tends to be very hit-or-miss. Some people show up looking either very budget, or totally flawless. This year was neither the best nor the worst in Emmy fashion. There was no one who showed up that made me scream “Oh, God! Why, why, why? Get thee to a stylist, Budget!” On the other side, there wasn’t anyone who made me sit up and yell “Yes! Best Dressed, hands down!” And, yes, I talk to my television. Speaking of, I watched the red carpet show on E!, and I was pleased to see Nene from The Real Housewives of Atlanta doing some commentary. Nene uttered my favorite line of the night, in regards to Ryan Seacrest’s interview with Stephen Moyer of True Blood. She said, “Black girls aren’t into vampires. That’s a white girl thing.”

The fashion trends this year seemed to be a hodgepodge: lots of girls were wearing metallics; many chose either an extreme blue, like a navy-black or a bright turquoise-teal, or a very, very pale ice-blue, almost white. The other trend was the one that needs to dragged out into the street and shot, the beige-nude color that too many girls wear, and very few can pull off.

My best dressed of the evening:

*Surprise, surprise, my absolute favorite of the evening was a Gossip Girl. I loved Blake Lively’s dress and styling. She wore a provocative, deep-V-neck, red Versace that showed off her flawless figure. Some will say she looked trampy. But if you’ve got that figure, you can wear that kind of dress and just look sexy. She showed the most skin of any girl there, but I think she stayed on the right side of the “classy” line. I also loved that she had her hair/extensions in one massive braid – it was a surprising choice, but it worked.

*Tina Fey, for thinking she’s an average girl with an average figure, but in reality, she’s a brainy bombshell. She chose a simple black dress that didn’t show off much skin, but I still liked it. She looked like herself, only slightly dressed up.

*Julia Louis-Dreyfus, in her teal strapless Vera Wang. The fit was perfection, the color was perfect for her, and she kept her hair and makeup very simple.

*Drew Barrymore – one of only two women that I saw who effectively pulled off a shade of beige. Her strapless rose-beige dress (I think it was Oscar de la Renta) was lovely, and she looked very elegant and classy. Great upswept hair, and good makeup.

*Honorable mentions: Sandra Oh – (for best use of a metallic with a mustard-gold strapless with some kind of embroidery); Heidi Klum (for looking like she was ready to give birth on the carpet, poor girl); Kyra Sedgwick (just because I love her, and her pink L’Wren Scott was surprisingly cute, feminine and girly); and Jenna Fischer (for most improved – she usually screws up her look completely, but she looked very pretty in a simple black strapless, good jewelry and good makeup).

Worst Dressed:

*Jessica Lange – The dress wasn’t even that bad. But everything felt off with her, from her face to her hair, to her sort of drugged-out eyes. She just seemed like a total mess of a once-gorgeous woman.

*Hayden Panettiere – Dina Lohan called, and she wants her look back. Seriously, Hayden could teach a class with Ali Lohan on how to look like a 40-something Rockette who has lived hard.

*Vanessa Williams – Once again, it wasn’t even the worst dress, although it did look cheap. The styling messed her up big-time, though. She looked very “budget beauty pageant third runner up” rather than “Emmys”.

Weird (but not necessarily bad) Dressed:

*I can’t decide whether I like Leighton Meester’s dress. The shoulder appliqués were too big, the makeup was overdone, the hair was messy, and she looked very shiny. And yet in a weird way, it all kind of worked.

*Mila Kunis – once again, I can’t decide if I like it. It made her look very “blood-soaked ballerina”. I liked the color on her, I liked her makeup and hair, but I didn’t love the whole look.

*January Jones – I think January’s problem is that she’s become famous for playing a character that is always in corsets, housedresses and anything that will make her look like Grace Kelly. So January rebels, and tries to be edgy and high-fashion. When I saw her on the red carpet, she looked uncomfortable – a totally rigid bustier will do that to you. The white-silver color is okay, the skirt is fine, so I’m left with the idea that she was simply trying too hard.

As for the men, very few deviated from the standard classic tux or well-tailored black suit. Some guys looked better than others – like Jon Hamm, Jason Segel, Simon Baker and John Krasinski. Some guys just looked a little “meh” – like Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Moyer (but his accent is a panty-dropper). It wasn’t a stunning night for fashion, but there was some good stuff there.

I am not sure why, and it isn’t anything against women showing off being pregnant, but Heidid Klum, IMO, looked ridiculous.

I actually liked January Jones’ dress. Thought it was very interesting and attractive on her.

I think Blake Lively looked awful and the dress seemed to fit her poorly.

What in the hell were the Kartrashian sisters doing there? Why are they ANYWHERE?

Kind of liked Holly Hunters dress, but she is getting those Madonna arma, which ladies, is NOT attractive. Work out, get SOME definition, but don’t go overboard.

  2. Diane says:

Loved the Drew and Sandra Oh dresses, other than those two, I was not interested enough to pay attention = )

  3. Ash says:

Ok, I didn’t think Hayden looked THAT bad. But she could look so much cuter / her age.

Who did Simon Baker go with? She looks like she could be his little sister?!

I also loved that color on Sarah Silverman, too bad the lower half of the dress totally threw me off.

  4. Kaiser says:

    Ash – I’m pretty sure that’s Simon Baker’s daughter.

Rob Lowe came with his sons too. It was a family affair.

  5. Ash says:

Oh, phew, I was a tad confused. I wouldn’t put it passed some of these guys.

  6. javelin says:

Drew Barrymore, ahhh. She looks like a dream.. a perfectly contained dream. Love.

Mila Kunis’s look would be flawless (in my eyes) if only that dress was cocktail length.

Hayden Pantierre looks like she’s the mascot of Valentine’s Day, strolling through the mall and handing out candy hearts to small children.

  7. princess pea says:

I’d give Patricia Arquette the worst-dressed award. She looked so uncomfortable when presenting. Like she just wanted to run backstage and rip the damned gown off.

  8. turtles says:

Mile Kunis is a vision. I love that woman. And she is so funny, too! I like when Drew looks more earth child than this. Chloe Sevigny = perfect. Sara Silverman looks AWFUL what is up with that?

  9. Ana says:

I agree, I think Mila’s dress should’ve been shorter. She is a tiny girl and needs to be more careful with the length of her dresses.
Sandra Oh is perfection. She also has a rockin bod.
Do Blake’s boobs move? I swear she has had a boob job. But they’re nice! I need to find out the name of her dr.
My favorite of the night was Kristin Chenoweth. I just love her and she looked amazing.

  10. TwinkleToes says:

Thanks Firestarter. Heidi did look redonkulous at first glance but then I questioned myself, like, should I be thinking like that? She’s CrAzY.

  11. dude says:

That dress is soooo Mila tho. Her style is different. She is still very beautiful though. Sandra Oh looked sassy & I loved it! Question: Why was Nene from Atlanta on there w/ her horrible red lipstick judging real stars/talent? Whos idea was that?

  12. Menolly says:

I didn’t like Heidi Klum’s dress, either. That loose fishtail hem thing made it look like she was wearing a sack.

I definitely liked January Jones’ dress, and Chloe Sevigny.

Ginnifer Goodwin should never wear dresses that all but scream for cleavage, because the poor thing doesn’t have any. She might as well have just put a sign on the front that says “No boobs here”.

No to what’s-her-name from House (does her name start with an “M”?). Her hair! Her EYES. My goodness, what has she done to her eyes…

Alyson Hannigan’s hair is red again! Beautiful.

Mariska Hargitay. Love her. That is all.

  13. eternalcanadian says:

dang, there were some real fashion duds at the emmys. i also noticed a lot of women had the “omg” look which meant they must have rushed off to the botox salon. i wonder if lindsay lohan made a profit what with all the spray tan stuff happening on both the men and women.

  14. bros says:

january jones looked amazing-high concept dress and she completely pulls it off in a way only charlize theron could. panetiereeehe whatever her name is looked like an 80’s soap opera and i have no idea why she ages herself so much every time she gets dressed up. vanessa williams looked lovely, and poor kyra sedgwick looks so much older than she is with that god-awful hairdo and terrible dress and the fact that she is emaciated and it ages her face.

leighton meester continually looks like a circus clown at every event-she has been having a terrible run of it lately (anyone see any pics of her at Ny fashion week? yech) and needs a new stylist stat. and a new makeup artist because her face has been looking terrible.

  15. Jepoy says:

DREW BARRYMORE wore Filipino designer Monique Lhuillier’s creation. She looked old-hollywood-stunning.

  16. Fat Elvis says:

bros: Agree with your assessment on all fronts, especially in regards to Kyra Sedgwick. I actually gasped when I saw the photos of her in that hideous getup. And when will these women learn that being ultra-skinny is worst thing they can do to preserve their appearance as they age? They get that “walking dead” look about them that’s truly painful to see.

  17. lucy says:

I love Sandra Oh’s and Drew Barrymore’s. Hayden never looks quite right – too old and just…odd. Liked Blake’s dress but not the hair. Tina, Kristin Chenowith, Julia L-D, Jenna Fischer (bad pic, she looked great on TV) all looked good. Did not care for Olivia Wilde’s, a bit too figure skating costume for me.
Loved the top and color of Mila’s, but agree a bit shorter and not so ragged on the bottom would have made me love the whole thing.
I liked Perry Reeves’, and am not sure about January Jones’. She is so pretty though.
That Leighton girl looked terrible -her dress looked like rolled up bed sheets, and she had on way too much makeup. Especially when standing next to natural beauty Blake, she looked like a little kid playing dress up.
Overall no huge disasters, but I agree that some gowns looked a little cheaper than others.

  18. Cinderella says:

Sandra Oh looked fabulous from head to toe. No one else really blew me away.

  19. the original kate says:

    my impressions:

mila: gorgeous, but the dress should have been longer or shorter.

jessica: awful. and the dress was inappropriate for her age, i think. something with sleeves would have been better.

julia louis dreyfuss: lovely…great color for her.

ginnifer goodwin: that dress was doing her no favors. made her boobs look long and flat.

chloe sevigny: i loved the dress but the pin was wrong – it was too small. a bigger dimaond pin would have been better.

sarah silverman: looked like a blue oompa loompa in that dress. not good.

kathy griffin: i kind of liked it, it seemed like her. boy, she is tiny!

  20. Kelly says:

When did Kyra Sedgwick turn into Loni Anderson?

  21. jennifer says:

I wish there were tags on the photos, I don’t know who half these people are hahaha. I love Drew but I think she looked way too poofy & frou frou – total overkill. Sandra Oh ROCKED that dress – she was the best of the night by far. Julia Louis Dreyfus is almost 50 years old and puts most of those younguns to SHAME. Love her, and the fact that if she HAS had any work done (which I doubt, but this IS Hollywood after all) it definitely wasn’t much! Fab fab fab. Oh, and Mila Kunis – GOD I adore that woman. Gorgeous. And Simon Baker’s daughter is stunning 🙂

  22. I Choose Me says:

She said, “Black girls aren’t into vampires. That’s a white girl thing.”

FALSE!!!! I’m a black (married) woman, I love me some vampires and I make no apologies for that. So speak for yoself missy, nyah!

  23. Zetok says:

Red dress very very… how do you think, how much money will it be cost?)
