Hilaria Baldwin was always Hillary Thomas, a white American mujer from Boston. Her family used to take vacations in Spain throughout her childhood, and those vacations became her late-in-life justification for adopting a come-and-go Spanish accent, telling people she was “from Spain,” describing herself as “Spanish and American” and pretending she didn’t know certain English words. All of this began to come out last Christmas, as old interviews, videos and lies were brought out and reassessed. Hilaria tried to do damage control by giving an interview exclusiva to the NY Times, and it just made things worse. There is, how you say, something not right in her cabeza. And now it’s really starting to feel like poor Hillary is just a full-on Rachel Dolezal. Hillary posted a lengthy Instagram about how she is, how you say, culturally fluid.
I had a very special experience-I spent time with my family for the first time in nearly 2 years, due to Covid.
We talked about how we grew up, our languages, our cultures-multi & very valid. We discussed belonging & how there are people who want to deny others their right to belong.
When you are multi, it can feel hard to belong. You are constantly going back and forth, trying to be more this or more that. You feel you have to explain why you are the way you are, trying to fit into a world of labels when there might not be one that perfectly defines you. You will never quite fit in because the other parts of you shape and influence all your parts. Nothing inside you can truly exist in a segregated environment. It’s not a light switch that cleanly switches on & off-more of a sliding dial that simply shifts through a rainbow of colors.
We all get to curate our individual expressions of our cultures, languages, who we love, what we believe in, how we dress, present ourselves. This is the right that each person should have.
People who don’t have your life experience can:
1. Accept it at face value & move on
2. Be curious & want to learn
3. Connect & find similarities to relate toWhat they shouldn’t do is devalue. You are valid, worthy & you don’t need to explain or get into the uncomfortable “prove it” conversation. You don’t owe that to anyone. Just be a good, kind human of this earth.
We need to normalize the fact that we are all unique-our culture, languages, sexual orientations, religions, political beliefs are ALLOWED TO BE FLUID. No two of us are completely alike.
People will try to find reason to invalidate you, therefore their attacks seem justified in their eyes. They can hate, poke fun & shame-because you “asked for it” through your audacity to be you.
What I had to learn through a very painful experience is that many people relate…so, if you are suffering, please know that a loving group see your validity and belonging. We love & accept you, just as you are.

What she’s trying (and failing) to describe is what actual multiracial people feel – I feel it as someone who is half-white and half-Indian, feeling like I don’t really belong on either side and I’m not “enough” of one side or the other. I’ve dealt with that all my life. I don’t describe myself as “culturally fluid” though because… that seems to suggest, Rachel Dolezal-style, that you can just decide to claim another race or culture that does not belong to you. I get that Hilaria’s parents retired from Beacon Hill to Spain when Hilaria was an adult, but that does not actually make her able to appropriate the lived experiences of a Spanish woman. Loca. Beenie – hard same. As a child, we often ate rare Italian delicassies in my house; ravioli was always my favorite and I feel other American children just don’t “get” my cultural fluidity of speaking English but also knowing how to pronounce words like marinara and tortollini.
Half my family is Greek. My grandmother was born there, taught me to cook the food. I grew up in my great aunt’s house, surrounded by the culture. Hearing the language but never learning to speak it. They were my family. They were full on My Big Fat Greek Wedding Greek.

PS, my other Grandmother considered herself hispanic, as her mother immigrated from Malaga, Spain. They spoke Spanish in the household. I’m still white.

When I visit Greece I speak the language like a local and know the customs, but am still viewed as an American with a Greek family because I didn’t grow up there. It’s difficult. You do feel out of place. Unless you’re hilaria and can come and go as you please.

I’m married into an extremely multicultural family and none of them make a big deal like this at all! They appreciate their cultures and enjoy their lives. I assimilated into the culture and respected it. That does not, however, give me the right to call myself multicultural. Weird. Just weird. It’s very obvious from her lack of detail when trying to defend herself when this all came out that she did not spend significant periods of time in Spain growing up. She became very vague. Her brother, who is living over there now for many years and married someone in that culture, could claim that feeling of being multicultural.
Hilaria presented herself as someone with an accent often (not all the time) and having lived in Spain by skirting questions and in many lies by omission and exaggerated behavior to make it seem like she was truly partially a product of Spain. I would encourage her to get psychological help. She can still embrace her love of the culture, but she was inventing a persona that was a false narrative on many occasions. I don’t even dislike Hilaria and wish her well, but she’s not owning up to her behavior that led to this.

I have no comment on her upbringing or the cultures with which she identifies. I do speak several languages, and more than once I have been unable to remember a word in English although it is my primary language. Sometimes the brain’s wires are operating in a specific mode, and can’t click over to another one in the moment. I don’t speak in changing accents, nor hold myself out as being something that I’m not, but we do need to recognize that acquired language glitches can happen and aren’t an affectation.

That’s why it’s a manifestation of white privilege. Spain may be essentially a white country for classification reasons (although even this argument is complicated since so many people descend from the MANY former colonies of this empire ranging from South America to the Philippines) but Spanish people are still the subject of stigma in the United States and many people see them as “other”, not white, and behave accordingly towards them in ways that create difficulty and friction and make it simply easier for them to deny their cultural heritage. She knows this, it makes her feel “exotic”.
It doesn’t matter that Spain is a white country. It matters that there are actual Hispanic and Latino people in the US who are mocked and ridiculed for their accent when this white woman from Connecticut gets to try it on for funsies.

Anybody know how she learned the Spanish language? Is it her actual current primary language? Is it even possible to acquire an accent on one’s primary language from a secondary language? I’m genuinely curious.

It can be her current primary language if that’s the language she uses most of the time, currently. Like I live in Quebec, speak French with my partner, neighbours, concierges in my appt, and any service people I encounter in groceries/healthcare/govt/shopping unless they switch to English, and don’t speak much of either language at work, so technically French is my current primary language even if it’s not the language I speak the best. Something I realized when I did the census! She could be horrible at Spanish and it could still be her current primary language.

Yes, you can pick up a bit of an accent from speaking a foreign language. I speak mostly Dutch (I’ve lived here 20 years), so it does slightly shade my English. However, when I return to the States (which was 2 years ago for the last time, sniff), my American accent returns to normal within a few days. My mom’s an immigrant and has lived in the States since 1962. She has a thick accent in Englis, and an American accent in her native language.
Her primary language is English as she was raised in Boston by American parents. Full stop.
As an immigrant, I disagree with the notion that one has to be born into a culture. You absolutely can adopt a new culture. The problem with her, however, is that she took it to a whole another psychotic level by faking an accent, tanning to look more Mediterranean (remember that video of her trying to teach her kids about racism?!!!), allegedly hiring actors for her wedding, etc. If she had just said that she is Spanish-American and kept the accent in check, I don’t think anyone would have cared about her giving her kids Spanish names, cooking traditional foods, or whatever. Just my thoughts.
But she’s not Spanish-American. She’s just white American born and bred in Boston pretending to be Spanish (fake accent and all).
You can appreciate another culture without actually trying to BE them in the most insulting (fake accents, lying about her past) way possible.

When this news broke I was in the middle of leaving one job and getting ready to start another, and my kitchen was gutted and getting redone and every little thing was going wrong with it so somehow I missed this news breaking by like a couple of weeks and I was so very sad about that. Absolutely. This is one of my favorite gossip stories of all time! My whole family loves it, even my 9 year old. It helps that we live in the Boston suburbs :). We call her Hillary from Boston to the tune of those Sam Adams commercials (“your cousin–from Bah-stun).

Ridiculous. Look, I get it. I spent the first few years of my life in Uruguay, and to this day I love the country and the culture. When I speak Spanish, I do have a bit of an Uruguayan accent. But I have never said I am actually Uruguayan. I am a US citizen who spent a few years in Uruguay when I was baby. That’s it. Hilaria is an American who loves Spain and has spent time there, sure. But she needs to stop trying to co-opt their cultural identity for her own benefit.

I was born and raised on the border of Mexico. Whites were the minority. All my friends were Hispanic. I spoke Spanish and slang everyday for 20 years. I have a love and affinity for all things Spanish. Art. Design. Architecture. My homes have always featured a Spanish aesthetic. It is what it is. Saltillo tile can always be found. I love their families, their holidays… everything about them made profound impacts on my life. If anyone could say something stupid like culturally fluid, or that I’m part Hispanic, it’d be me. When my oldest was very young, he actually told his teachers that I was from Mexico (to my horror which I quickly corrected lol). But I would NEVER EVER even THINK to appropriate Spanish culture as my own. Yes I lived it. Their culture was mine and we intertwined for many years and their lives and livelihoods are permanently etched. But my grandparents lived through the great depression and the dust bowl in Missouri. My mother was born in raised in Tennessee. My parents met in Houston when my dad was rooming with an Astros baseball player lol. If I can stand back, and aside, showing respect… Mexico was not a vacay (even though I’ve been everywhere down there lol), it was my existence. But I am not Hispanic. ¿Hear that mujer?
I’m a total Anglophile, and do tend to spell with the British “u” in words where Americans would leave them out, but the day I start actually start speaking with an English or Scottish accent, I sincerely hope people would mock me mercilessly and tell me where to get off. Appreciate a culture as much as you want, immerse yourself in it fully. But pretend you’re actually from a place you’ve barely set foot in? Get mad when you’re outed? Come on. I had a coworker who studied abroad and came back to “the states” (as she put it) with a weird vaguely British accent. Do not doubt that we roasted the hell out of her all the time.
Unconsciously picking up an accent like that can happen. I spent a long weekend with cousins from Tennessee who came up to Canada. By the end of the weekend I had developed a slight drawl but it quickly disappeared thereafter.
What she does not get is that while you can absolutely become a part of a culture though your roots may be from elsewhere (try telling Greek people that Giannis Antetokounmpo is not really Greek and they will spit on you; as far as any Greek person is concerned, their son is in the NBA finals and don’t you forget it), when you use that culture to try to sell yourself, you are not a participant but a pillager.
I was born and raised in NYC. Everyone’s grandparents spoke a different language. There’s absolute beauty in experiencing other peoples’ cultures, in taking part in traditions, listening to music you never would have otherwise heard, and eating so much delicious food you could burst. There are some cultures that I feel so close to because of the way I grew up, but I would never claim them to the point I use them to advertise my damn self. There’s such a clear, NON-FLUID line.
P.S. I actually did a semester abroad in Spain when I was in high school which means I have been educated in Spain unlike Miss Hilaria of Boston. I came back with a brain full of Spanish and a reflex to speak it that switched off after a couple of days because, you know, I’m American. Like some other people.

Bitsie has actual Spanish/Mexican ancestry. Her mother is Spanish. She grew up in Spain and now lives in the US. Speaks English and Spanish. Had spoken often of her experience coming to the US after growing up in Spain and Latin America yet she’s always quick to correct people that she doesn’t consider herself completely fluent in Spanish anymore given she speaks English primarily now. And Bitsie actually::is:: Spanish but she’s super careful about playing it up too much bc it’s clear and knows she’s white. I remember seeing this story with Hilaria and wondering if Hilaria had literally copied Bitsie’s life story. It’s so bizarre.
and yet Tulloch, who actually grew up in Spain/Central & South America, doesn’t go around claiming to be Spanish or speaking English with a Spanish accent (though they did write her Spanish fluency into Grimm which was pretty cool)
I do want to correct this bit from @Kaiser’s statement “Her family used to take vacations in Spain throughout her childhood,” Hilaria did not “grow up” vacationing with her family in Spain. Nobody in her family had been to Spain prior to her older brother doing a year abroad when he was 16(?) so if her family started vacationing there after that it didn’t start until she was 14 and they vacations were not for extended periods of time. I think in one of the posts from last year, someone even included the link to a post where her father posted something about moving to Majorca & other friends/family posted comments that indicated the family didn’t have a particularly long history of visiting Spain at all
Right! Bitsie Tulloch actually has the Spanish heritage for real and she didn’t live in the US until she was a legit teenager but you never see her trying to even play it up. If she’s asked about it, she will share the story and I’ve seen her converse with Spanish speaking fans in Spanish for their benefit (which is lovely) but she doesn’t brag about living in Spain nor try to claim anything that doesn’t belong to her. She’s not pretending to be something she’s not. Hilaria is just a big culture appropriating fraud!

There’s a thing called “reverse cultural shock”. In my case, I was born and raised in Argentina. Left at 19, worked on cruise ships for 3 years, in Austria for 5 and I have been living in the the UK for the last 21 years. When I go to Argentina I don’t fit in. At all. With the exception of the language, the food and cultural references from my childhood I’m a complete tourist.
I do fit in here in the UK, at least culturally, and my European and American colleagues all think I’m British, but British people know, as soon as I utter a single sentence, that I’m foreign. So every time I meet someone over here, one of the first things they’ll ask is “where are you from?”
So really, not quite from here, not quite from there.
Anyway. Hillary seriously gets on my nerves. She needs to stop.

People can “fit in” in multiple places and not claim ancestry/ culture that isn’t theirs. Anthropologically, humans are wired to try to fit into surrounding cultures. It’s literally what kept homo sapiens alive and (theoretically) Neanderthals… not. Third culture kids and multi-racial/ multi-cultural people do this ALL.THE.TIME. It’s fantastic to be able to go from one culture/language to another. It is a strength. But what Hillary did was bamboozle/ gaslight/ fabricate/ LIE. Not the same thing at. all.

Any of my other CA natives can chime in on this, but growing up I knew a few bougie but liberal white women who put on airs about identifying more with Latin culture and embracing a chosen Latin culture in many ways (clothing, food, enunciated pronunciations of Spanish/Portuguese words, etc.) but none that actually claimed a different ancestry or acted like they’d forgotten English. This is just beyond.
Yeah I’m a so cal native, I know what you mean about rich white women leaning into Mexican/south American or indigenous American stuff

After the fiasco of a few months ago, if she would have done an op-ed or Medium type article and talked about her insecurities, wanting more, wanting to be anyone else, etc., it could have gone a long way toward a reputation rehab. She should have talked about how insecurities will drive you to lie and getting swept up into a lie that started small enough and became a runaway train, etc.. We have all told little white lies and I think we all could relate a little. Instead, she’s doubling down on it as if it never happened. I guess that is…an angle?! It is obvious what happened here. In one of the early seasons of 30 Rock, Jack (aka Alec) hires Selma Hayek as a caretaker for his mother. It was a multi-episode arc and rumors were that Alec was infatuated w/ Selma during and after the filming of those episodes.
Flash forward a decade or so and Hilaria knows that Alec is single (and looking), hangs out in the Hamptons and is infatuated with Selma. She does her very best to re-create Selma’s look and accent and then has a “completely accidental” encounter with Alec at a Hampton’s restaurant.
Put two and two together – she carefully plotted this out step by step. Did Alec know that at the time? I highly doubt it, but he has to have it all figured out at this point. He still seems to be playing the game because at this point she has roped him in with an army of kids and it’s probably less complicated to defend her. Plus, he doesn’t look like as much of a fool because he was telling the story for years how they randomly met at a restaurant and fell madly in love. Ok, Alec… totally random, for sure. And if you weren’t a wealthy celebrity I’m sure she would have totally fallen head over heals for you since you both clearly have so much in common. *EYEROLL*

Basically a long doubling down about how she is “multicultural” when she isn’t a little bit. She basically wishes she was me, a real bicultural/bilingual person. Both my parents are white but my father is from France, mom from the US. I absolutely consider myself multicultural—that’s not just a word applied to race. France and the US are so, so different in terms of culture, we could sit here all day enumerating the differences. I speak French fluently without much of an accent. Some natives say they can hear one, most don’t. French people are often floored to find out I never lived a day in France apart from summer vacations and a 5 month study abroad stint in college. My parents shelled out lots of $$$ to send me and my sister to a private bilingual French-American school (there are a lot of French schools btw in the US, a lot of Americans don’t even realize this). I sometimes feel like I don’t truly belong as an American or a French person but I don’t have an identity crisis about it. As a white person it doesn’t make me stand out and nobody in the US can tell I speak French unless they ask me about my name. But I have a claim to actually being part French—half of my family lives in France and I have French citizenship.
Also I lived in Spain for two years and while I love Spain and can speak Spanish pretty well I don’t do the I am española too schtick. Hilary is such a wannabe European and she clearly tried to market herself as some exotic white Spanish lady for attention.
I wonder what she tells her kids? Does she tell them they are part Spanish? My God.

I lived and worked in the Bahamas for 10 years. I absolutely fell in love with the people and small island living. I felt more ‘at home’ there than anywhere else I have lived. I’m still a white chick from the U.S., I did not start speaking the Bahamian dialect. I don’t say I am ‘from’ there even though my husband and I call it home to each other. I didn’t adapt Bahamian culture but grew to deeply respect and love it.

My husband was a French minor in college and then spent three years in France. He is fluent and speak with an impeccable accent. He loves all things France, and yet he has managed to remain American, and not identify as French. This is all horse shit but she just can’t accept that the world now sees her as shady.
Paltrow is fluent in Spanish and loves Spain. She came out with that cookbook with Batali but even she knows not to try and fake it.

Hispanic is someone who speaks Spanish. Not everyone in Latin America speaks Spanish as a first language. And Latine/a/o people, like myself, would prefer not to be politically associated to Spaniards, the descendants of the people who literally invaded our land, burnt our history, and r@ped our people.

My mother in law lived 20 years in Germany as an adult. No German accent, no claiming she’s German. Even my husband who was born there speaks German and Polish (his parents language) without accent. Basically this is how language work, when you’re exposed before 4years you will speak phonetically well. Even my SILs kid who only hears his mom speak Polish has no German accent in Polish – may not know all words or his grammar is far from perfect but when he speaks you wouldn’t’ at first know it’s not his first language.
I get forgetting a word from time to time, if I use a lot of English at work and try to tell someone what happened sometimes english word comes first to my mind. But geez, I’m still not English or speak with English accent…. I even stopped being embarassed about speaking English with heavy Polish accent – because this is the language I’ve learned as an adult and I speak well enough that people understand me with no problem, I’m not gonna pretend it’s my first language.
