David Harbour: I’ve always been drawn to fascinating, intelligent, fierce women

avalon-0483843853

David Harbour is doing the bulk of the promotion for Black Widow now that it’s released, which is an interesting choice for the long-awaited female-fronted film from Marvel. However, I like David so I’m happy when he’s on the promo trail. Black Widow’s opening was pushed back due to the pandemic. Box Office numbers suggest that was a good decision. I haven’t seen it yet. I want to. I’d planned to watch it over the weekend but balked at the $30 streaming cost. I understand why, but for that price, I’ll go see it in a theater. It’s getting decent reviews. David plays Alexei/Red Guardian, who supports Natasha and Yelena (I’m guessing, I don’t actually know the story). His character is married to Rachel Weisz’s Melina. Naturally, comparisons come up about all the impressive women with whom David surrounds himself, including his wife, Lily Allen. David told ET’s Nischelle Turner he’s lucky because he’s “always been drawn to really fascinating, intelligent, fierce women.”

On gaining wait for the role and life in lockdown
I’ve been eating donuts since way before we were locked inside. This has been a tough year for jeans everywhere. For waistlines everywhere.

This year and a half has been so extraordinarily strange. What was life before that?

On the stunts in Black Widow
The stunts are unbelievable in this movie. The guys and girls who do those things are unbelievably talented athletes and dancers, it’s sort of a combination of these skills that I do not possess hardly an ounce of. In general it’s brutal. I’m in my mid 40s. My knees and lower back are not meant to do these things anymore. There are about four guys that make up Red Guardian.

On the new season of Stranger Things
It’s my favorite season. The scripts get bigger, the show gets bigger in a way but it also gets more fun. It’s the heaviest dramatic stuff I ever had to do. We get to see a lot of Hopper at his most vulnerable. We’re going to reveal a lot of backstory points.

He was asked how he lucked out with women on screen and off
I have no idea. I just don’t deserve it. I’ve just always been drawn to really fascinating, intelligent, fierce women. I was very lucky to work with Rachel Weisz who I think is just one of the most talented people out there. Truly one of the greatest actresses of her generation, one of the greatest movie stars of her generation and just a lovely human being but so generous and so fun to work with. Of course my wife, who is an extraordinarily brilliant artist and human being who I really am so lucky to be a partner to and with. I’ve really been really lucky and have had a really nice pandemic in spite of everything.

[From ET via YouTube]

I didn’t realize Rachel and David’s character’s played husband and wife in the movie. I love that pairing. That’s a reason to fork out the streaming cost. Plus, I heard Florence Pugh is great in the film. I kind of want to see it before I know anything, and my spoiler free bubble pops. I think David is being sincere when he said he lucked out both on screen and off. Not in a self-deprecating way, but that he really does value strength in his female counterparts and is attracted to fascinating women. To be able to work alongside and marry someone like that is lucky. I feel the same way. I wish he’d referred to the stuntwomen as something other than “girls,” but that’s a hard habit to break, I realize. At least he acknowledged there were more than just men on set, that’s more than most do.

I’ve said it before, I had no idea what to make of David and Lily when they first hooked up, but I’m convinced they are beautifully matched. He seems to appreciate everything about her and her daughters. They melded together so well, it’s hard to believe they’ve only been married a matter of months. It feels like so much longer. It seems like both Lily and David bring out the best in each other and I’ve always thought that’s when a relationship thrives. And good for David for recognizing his wife’s fierceness. All partners should.

I love him. I did shell out the 30 bucks, I really liked the film. Yes, it’s true, Pugh was great in it. I do thank god I didn’t see the zoom chat between Pugh, Harbour, Scarjo, Weisz, and Kevin Feige prior to seeing it. I only saw a 7 second outtake, and I guess Scarjo is lucky it was Zoom and not a late night show interview or something. She actually brought up Joss Whedon (she wasn’t asked!) to praise him and how great he is.

You should have seen Feige’s face. You really should see his face.

I don’t think I could have put those 7 seconds aside and they wouldn’t have gotten my 30 bucks. Every time I think maybe she learned, she goes out there and proves she is incapable. And frankly, she looked gleeful. I think she does it on purpose.

    • LillyfromLillooet says:

      1. Love David Harbor as well and am so happy for his success
      2. ScarJo is great on screen but she leaves me cold otherwise–I keep thinking her outspoken support for men known to be sick and abusive is because she hasn’t personally experienced it so therefore…??? And/or she just likes being contrarian, which looks like strength but…

      • Darla says:

Lilly I don’t know what her problem is. I believe she is very dumb. But that doesn’t explain all of this. I don’t know. But I am SOOOO happy she’s done with Marvel, and I hope that sticks. I just can’t stand her.

    • Driver8 says:

You think Lily is dumb? Have you listened to her music? Her lyrics are very sharp and clever and I doubt DH would marry someone who is “dumb”.

      • Darla says:

No, I think Scarjo is dumb. the “lilly” in my post is addressing the commenter above me. Whose screen name is, yes, lilly.

      • Driver8 says:

@darla, sorry and I misunderstood your post. I can’t stand ScarJo either. She’s rubbed me wrong for years.

      • Jamie says:

I want to see this movie so bad, but just cannot stand watching SJ on screen. Who she is offscreen gets in the way of my ability to suspend belief and see the character she’s portraying.

    • Case says:

ScarJo has the WORST TAKES. Why bring Whedon up without even being asked? She’s so out of touch.

That said (and this isn’t in defense of her or Whedon), it does seem like the Avengers folks genuinely did like working with him. For one reason or another, it seems like he kept himself in check during that shoot.

      • Songs (Or it didnt happen) says:

ScarJo was a child actress, remember. I think that the child stardom and being famous to some degree for most of her life has definitely skewed her perceptions. But the same could be said for a lot of people

    • Green Desert says:

Oh my god, Scarjo! Unfortunately unsurprising. When she addressed her past comments in an interview from a few months ago, she left me cold. She didn’t really apologize. I too wonder what it is – is she kind of dumb? Definitely out of touch. And I’ve read over the years that she’s an a**hole. Combination of all of this no doubt.

    • milliemollie says:

Wow, Scarjo praising a extremely problematic asshole, what a suprise…
She’s an asshole, so no wonder she likes other assholes.

    • GrnieWnie says:

I love men who appreciate women. So rare!

  2. LightPurple says:

David’s the comic relief in Black Widow. Rachel is a bit underused. It’s basically Florence’s film and she’s worth watching.

    • ShazBot says:

Agree, Florence really ran away with it.
I don’t love ScarJo, but I think they really did Natasha dirty in the series, so I’m glad she got this movie to round out her character. Still sucks what they did to her, but I think if Florence is holding the mantle going forward, she’ll be fantastic.

  3. Joanna says:

I love men like that. I’m not a standard beauty whatever that is and have been rejected for it. Men like this who appreciate women like this are to be treasured.

  4. Nina says:

I love this man. I hope he’s ok and taking care of his mental health, he said he struggled a lot. I hope he’s happy

  5. Jayna says:

He is crazy about Lily. I do believe that , but they did marry quickly. And then they were separated for quite a while (months) because of the pandemic. Lily’s ex-husband has half custody of their kids, and there is no way he’s letting those kids move to NYC with her. I thought it was every other week with each parent. So I just wonder how this marriage is going to work. His career is in America. I thought I read she is moving here. So the kids stay in Engand during the school year? The last I read she didn’t address the shared kid custody situation in relation to her new marriage and how that will work.

  6. Merricat says:

He adores her and he appreciates his life–which is lovely, and makes me love him as a human. When the world is as messed up as it is, a small pocket of love and gratitude is a relief. I wish them a long and happy life together.

  7. Mcmmom says:

It’s pretty good. I think Scarlett is the weakest link – she’s just not a great actress. Florence is good in it and Rachel is always great. We saw Little Women a few days ago, so I guess we are having a Florence film festival at our house.

    • Merricat says:

Florence is also fun in Midsommar. She’s a good actor.

    • Case says:

I’ve thought Scarlett was pretty good in everything EXCEPT Marvel movies. She totally phones in this role and Black Widow is consistently the least interesting character of the whole series (along with Hawkeye who is equally boring and phoned-in). I genuinely like most Marvel characters but I have no attachment to Black Widow/Natasha at all.

      • Turtledove says:

I love the Marvel films but am not really familiar with the comics/”lore”. So what I have to wonder is if this is ScarJo’s fault or the writing for Black Widow? She obv has the acting chops, she has been great in other dramatic roles. So, is BW as a character boring, or if she IS compelling in the comics,, when they put the screenplay together did they ruin whatever makes her dynamic?

ScarJo has a lot of really dumb/shitty things to say, and I suppose i shouldn’t feel the need to defend her. But so many of the other Marvel characters are so interesting/nuanced/funny etc, and BW seemed almost like they put her in originally because having ScarJo in a black leather catsuit would make for good “scenery”. (I haven’t seen the latest film, so I am talking about the other films specifically)

    • Grant says:

I don’t know. I’m not really a ScarJo fan (I long fantasize about how things might have been with Emily Blunt in the role of Black Widow) but I feel like she did a really good job as Natasha, particularly in this film. The movie takes place between Captain America: Civil War and Infinity War while she’s on the run, and she has a very tired, beleaguered energy that I thought was appropriate given the chronology and also kind of bittersweet knowing what we do about Natasha’s eventual fate in Endgame. I also thought she had really good chemistry with Florence Pugh, who I am so excited to see more of in the MCU!

  8. KBeth says:

I love him as Hopper in Stranger Things, sexy.

  9. Mina_Esq says:

He seems like such a great guy. I’d be sad if it gets revealed one day that he is secretly horrible.

    • olliesmom says:

I’m always afraid of that too. Likes he’s too good to be true and there must be something dark and horrible that is hidden. Disappointed in people too many times when you find out that they are garbage.

  10. AmelieOriginal says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought ScarJo wasn’t great as Black Widow. I am trying to remember a role where she was great but it seems the most I’ve seen her in are the Marvel movies. She always seemed like an automaton as Natasha and barely emoted, like a robot. I’m sorry if that’s harsh but we’ve had some great female characters in the Marvel universe: Captain Marvel, Shuri, the Countess lady played by Julia-Louis Dreyfus in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Nakia, Okoye, Agent Carter etc. I also know this isn’t ScarJo’s fault but the “romance” between Natasha and Bruce Banner was one of the worst storylines ever, there was zero chemistry there lol. I just never bought she was this amazing Russian assassin and found it to be such a miscast for her. Like imagine what Charlize Theron could have done in that role or even Angelina Jolie (yes I know a bit older now but about 10 years ago when Black Widow made her debut in Iron Man 2?). Well I guess they finally got Angelina in the Eternals.

    • Lightpurple says:

They originally tried to get Emily Blunt for Natasha but she had scheduling conflicts.

    • Humbugged says:

JLD was in this too in the post credit scene .This was supposed to be her intoduction but they moved it back

Her and Yelena are working together

    • bettyrose says:

Coulda stopped at ScarJo wasn’t great at . . . I understand why she’s a megastar, and it’s not because she’s the next Meryl Streep.

    • tealily says:

I thought she was terrific in Jojo Rabbit. I usually find her just fine at best, but that role was a stand out.

  11. KNy says:

One of my friends saw him in NYC (just walking around) and she said he is so much more handsome than his pictures. She said she was “struck.”

    • bettyrose says:

I can see that. He has an every day guy kinda manliness to him that I bet is super hot IRL.

  12. Bettyrose says:

I feel like that comes across as patronizing as a pull quote but is a lovely sentiment presented in context. I can’t bring myself to pay $30 for a movie. It’s a bargain for a family of 4, but I know I won’t enjoy it as much as a five-part series on Acorn. I’ll catch it in 3 months.

  13. tealily says:

Poor David looks like death warmed over in that top photo. Get that man some bronzer or something.

  14. Gemgirlaaa says:

It’s fully worth the $30 bucks to stream. This was one of the few avengers films I liked and didn’t feel obligated to watch.

Let’s be real. Most of them are just overly long boring metal tubes of entertainment for the fanboys to stroke (barf)

This one was funny, full of action, had a decent plot and we were entertained for the whole movie. Pretty good I’d say, and yes, $30 is a lot for streaming but as a lady I’m happy to pay for more quality entertainment led by ladies! Yeah! (Even Scarjo)

Edited to add a special S*CK IT for Stephen Dorff

    • dj says:

Agreed. We saw it in the theater (I was too excited to stream at home). I thought it was one of the best Marvel movies. The pacing was great, very lean backstory telling. Told me enough without overstuffing the plot. The action was very good and good stunts. I went to support a female-driven movie. I love Rachel Weisz and David Harbour. Florence Pugh was very good. ScarJo was good enough. I recommend.

    • tealily says:

      Lol Stephen Dorff!

    • Grant says:

I too loved Black Widow but I don’t share your sentiments on MCU movies. Why are people so triggered by Marvel movies yet no one comes for dumb schmaltz like Bridgerton? Also, I’ve legitimately never been in a Marvel movie and thought, DANG I wish this was over. I’m usually pretty entertained from start to finish and Black Widow was no exception.

  15. bella says:

My family thought it was worth the price. We thoroughly enjoyed it. there were a few scenes that would have played out better on the big screen, but given that we wouldn’t go to a theater yet, we were glad this was the option.
