The Emmy nominations are out! And the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are involved! Before we get to the good news, a piece of bad news: Prince Harry and Oprah’s excellent AppleTV+ series, The Me You Can’t See, was not nominated for any docu-series Emmys – it was submitted in the Outstanding Hosted Non-Fiction Series or Special. It was eligible! The series dropped on May 21 and the cut-off for Emmy eligibility is the last day in May. Now, what’s sort of funny is that TMYCS didn’t get nominated… but Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special was nominated in that category, Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series Or Special category. It’s up against shows like Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy and The United Shades of America. The Crown’s Season 4 also picked up a million nominations. HAHAHA.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s sit-down with Oprah Winfrey has just been nominated for an Emmy. Oprah With Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special, which first aired in the U.S. on March 7, was called out among the five nominees of the Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series Or Special category when the nominations were announced on Tuesday.
It was a big day for royal watchers: Netflix’s The Crown tied with Disney+’s The Mandalorian to score the most nominations (24 apiece!) for the 2021 awards. Specifically, this past season of The Crown told a fictionalized version of the fraught period when Harry’s parents, Princess Diana and Prince Charles, met, married and began their family under the pressures of royal life. Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor were both nominated in the lead actor – drama category for their performances as Diana and Charles, respectively.
The Crown’s Season 4 was amazing, really. Just great television, wonderful acting, good writing. I hope Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor are both heavily considered in their categories. That whole thing caused Prince Charles to run a completely unhinged campaign against The Crown as well, because suddenly two new generations were exposed to how terribly he treated Diana.
Would you like more good news? Baldemort’s sad “I’m keen about the environment too!!” documentary, Prince William: A Planet For Us All wasn’t nominated for anything. Probably because that is the incorrect use of a colon.

Funny. The camb stans always go on and on about how h&m are celebrities now and that royalty is above celebrity. Seems like their future king wants a piece of hollywood tho. And failed.
Hollywood and the Rota know the Cambridge’s don’t have it. They say royalty is above celebrity as an coping mechanism to make that family feel better about its standing.
One of those RRs wrote an article saying that William needs to go Hollywood to compete with the Sussexes. They all know the Keens are boring as hell and bring nothing to the table. @JT Since they are shut out of the Sussexes lives, the media basically wants the Cambridge’s to be carbon copies of them to make their jobs easier because I really don’t believe these writers and reporters truly believe what they write about the Cambridge’s. I think they secretly resent them for not being Harry and Meghan in a way because they’re so dull and uninteresting. They’ll never be the real thing, which is what the media truly want. Access to the Sussexes is something they’ll forever be salty about not getting.
@Britt I agree the BM are resentful that they are left with the Keens and as awful as the press are, I don’t blame them. How many “finding her voice” and “global statesman” articles can one write? I would tear my hair out. It’s why they try to project Meg’s qualities onto Kate and Harry’s onto William. I think it was Richard Kay who said the Meghan brought in more attention and money than Diana did and now they are stuck. She brought new interest in royal watching and the press blew it.
I am really surprised TMYCS was not nominated, but I wonder if the timing hurt it, if not enough emmy voters saw it before their votes were due? Releasing something at the end of the eligibility period like that can be risky IMO. I feel like we saw the same thing with Bridgerton and the Globes.
Anyway, I do think the Oprah interview deserved its nomination. It was a masterpiece of an interview. I think it reminded those who had forgotten HOW Oprah became Oprah – because she is an excellent interviewer.

The funny thing about all of this Meghan Markle drama (etc.) was that I never realized how much these basic things about racism are contested. I never realized how many (mostly white) people go through life thinking everything is equitable for all, that when they say ‘X racist thing’, it isn’t actually racist…that everything is subjective. I didn’t realize how many people think racism is simply a racial slur, full stop.
This really is a public conversation about all the nuanced ways that systemic racism works, isn’t it? And I had no idea how many people were clueless about systemic racism. It’s made me wonder why I’m not. The only answer I arrived at is just the fact that a large number of people who I grew up around, worked around, and lived around as an adult were not white. That’s it. That was enough to give me perspective. That’s all it takes: familiarity and a bit of empathy. You need so little to get perspective, yet so many people lack it entirely!
IMO the tide has begun to turn. The interview merits an Emmy because systemic racism is finally understood by enough of society to see the value in it. And no amount of banning teaching Critical Race Theory in schools is going to stem the tide.
I think you are absolutely right. I mean, we even had someone on here yesterday say that Meghan didn’t experience any issues because of her race (a white person, obviously.)
I think there is a big misunderstanding/ignorance about what racism actually is. It’s not just a racial slur. It’s systemic, it’s microaggressions, its both big and small. And I think unless you are willing to actually listen to what non-white people have to say about it, you aren’t going to learn or change.
So I think you’re right like I said that this interview and Meghan’s treatment in general shone a light onto what racism actually is -both in terms of how she was treated by the family and institution and how she was treated by the press.
I had a coworker (white male) sit there with a straight face and say there is no racism due to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. I mean this is a college educated man and served in a branch of our military and had the brazen stupidity to say that. Worse still, he has children. Lord help them.
The whole furor about critical race theory is so revealing. The people who are upset about it don’t understand literary theory in general, and critical race theory, specifically. They just hear what they fear, which is that participating in systemic racism makes a person culpable. They’re so afraid to admit they are the problem, but unless everyone recognizes their own part in the system, it won’t change. I also think the tide is turning toward a more equitable world. I hope.
That is some good insight: “…that participating in systemic racism makes a person culpable.” And if you really sit with that observation, it’s maddening because it all boils down to self-regard and self-interest. People aren’t willing to looking beyond their own feelings (of guilt, etc.) to acknowledge that the feelings of others are far more significant in this context. They don’t want that discomfort for five minutes and their refusal to sit with it actually perpetuates harm to many others.

I think it’s a combination of naïveté and denial. I think most white people genuinely believe that to be racist is to use slurs, wear them symbols of racist groups or commit violence against a POC. They’re in denial about other forms of racism simply because they never had to deal with it. In their minds, if they don’t see it, it must not exist.
yeah, right? I look back and think, all it took to understand micro aggressions was noticing that my close friend who is black always had to ask “but are they racist there?” whenever we planned travel together. Obviously, I didn’t have to think about that. You notice those things over and over again so by the time someone comes around and starts talking about micro aggressions from (relatively) powerful people who function within a system that affects many others, you are primed to get it. It really is just about exposure to the lives of other people who aren’t white…you get an intuitive understanding of white privilege without ever hearing about the actual concept. This is a big reason why I am a huge fan of public school and public spaces.
I don’t why William thought his little sad documentary would be nominated when he didn’t even promote the damn thing. He spent more time hyping up Attenborough’s doc rather than his own; he even got his kids to shill for David. The ratings for it were dismal and it barely made a blip in the news.
But JT, his NAME is on it! So people MUST applaud and award it laurels. And if they don’t, it’s Meghan’s fault.
It must seem really jarring to have your own PR team, right wing new outlets and tabloids kissing your behind, your competition leaves the country and still nobody cares. And the moments you speak out the world calls you out repeatedly. Sometimes, I wonder if William realizes how trapped he really is because while he is protected, he has no one really and the constant praises are fake. Kate must realize it too.

When/If PWT ever comes to that realization, he’ll have to acknowledge that Harry was right about about how William, Charles and Betty all live their lives in a gilded cage – with an obscene amount of wealth and privilege but without control of their own destiny or happiness beyond what the BM wants to allow. He’ll either become even more abusive or unhinged towards the Sussexes or he may have a major breakdown because he knows he doesn’t have the brains, work ethic or heart to break away and make a life for himself in the real world. He’s shown everyone who he really is and there ‘s no chance of him leaving the BRF because he has no real world skills or connections now. He ‘s burned all the bridges and he’d be isolated.
I’m happy for Oprah. I don’t think the interview will win but it deserved to be nominated.

Yep. I believe even Piers Morgan said Meghan should give him an interview to set the record straight. They all trash her but they would give their left arm to be able to interview Meg. Part of their outrage about H&M is because they wanted access to them and the RRs even said that they “were promised access” to the Sussexes, and especially Meghan. The royals kept telling H&M to just give the BM access and everything would get better (sure Jan) but they refused.
Harry and Meghan also (well more so Meghan) knew that Oprah was sympathetic and a seasoned interviewer – well respected in her field. Piss Morgan and Me-again Kelly are no where near in the same orbit and Oprah. They wish, but they are not nor will they ever will be. Piss and Me-again fuel fires of hate and mistrust. They do not dig to find the truth.

I love the fact that all the whining from the British media about this interview and the crown has done nothing to deter their successes. I admire Harry and Meghan in many ways because they went through a lot with the worlds glare and dealt with the most toxic abuse from all sides. What else that the press say at this point? Harry and Meghan are not going back, they’re stuck with boring bland royals and the money train they had is gone. No one cares about the tabloid frenzy outrage for clicks like that anymore. If anything, with all the hints and obvious tugging of invisible leashes, the Cambridge’s need to get working to make themselves interesting because Harry and Meghan scapegoating is getting old and everyone has or is catching on.

It’s funny that two programs that unmasked the ugliness of the BRF to a new generation are nominated. Of course there’s going to be a meltdown by royalists especially if the shows win. Programs that reflect recent and current history and are well done are recognized. But I like to think this is America’s payback to the BRF, the BM and some of the UK population for coming after a US citizen who is in the entertainment industry.
Going after Meghan, the crown and ignoring Racism has made that family and media look real stupid. All that furor and the Crown is still one of the top shows in the world and the interview is still one of the biggest television events of the year. Repeatedly attacking both didn’t work and it still isn’t and it has to sting.
For sticking it to the BRF and the royal rats, I would have preferred to see TMYCS get the nod because Harry has EP credit. But Oprah did say her interview with H&M was the best she’s ever done and it really was masterful.

I am thrilled for Oprah. Some people had forgotten why she’s considered one of the best who ever did this and that interview reminded everyone and introduced her to a whole new generation of viewers. I hope she wins, but this is one of those times when just being nominated is recognition enough. I sense TMYCS will have other parts and might get other opportunities to be nominated another year.
That Oprah interview was iconic. It spawned memes that will outlive it’s memory, changed conversations, forced resignations, and the part where Harry just casually drops that bomb that his father stopped taking his calls will live on in my own memory as a genuine dropped jaw moment. Like I literally gasped, lol. And Oprah totally knew what she did too. Her whole subtly smug mood the next morning on CBS talking to Gayle was awesome.
And I genuinely hope season 4 of The Crown wins. It was absolutely engrossing, and the actors playing Charles and Di specifically were absolutely incredible. and of course Charles Streisand-Effected himself by being so hostile about it because I hadn’t watched The Crown since Claire Foy was the Queen, but hearing that Clarence House lobbied for a disclaimer before every episode that the depiction of Charles and Diana’s marriage was totally not true and huge dramatic license made me want to watch it to see what they were so afraid of, lol.

Yes, the Oscars have a documentary category. This year’s favourite to win is “My Octopus Teacher” about a film-maker who makes friends with an octopus! I believe it’s on Netflix, will have to look it up and watch it, I adore octopi!

@LRob – the Emmy categories for non-fiction are very different from the Oscars. In this case, the Oprah interview is nominated under “non-fiction hosted series or special event.” There’s also a category for documentaries, writing for documentaries and something called “exceptional filmmaking.”
I didn’t even know there was a nonfiction category for the Emmys lol and how ballsy of Oprah and Harpo Productions to submit it for consideration! I wonder how Meghan and Harry feel about it. Diana’s 1995 interview also got awards including a BAFTA but it seems the BBC made the decision to return all the awards after the inquiry found Martin Bashir used false documents to convince Diana to do it. So even British journalists can’t do bombshell interviews correctly with members of the royal family haha.
