Stop putting out Halloween candy in July!! I get it though, there are no “candy holidays” during the summer. So create one! We need Independence Day-themed Reese’s Cups and Fourth of July mini-Snickers. [OMG Blog]

I don’t August. After July I’m ready for autumn, so I support early Halloween candy, decor, etc.
Side note, I’m positively devastated that we didn’t talk about Adam Driver’s centaur commercial today. DEVASTATED. Maybe tomorrow, lol.
Maybe because there are no words to describe it? Love it or hate it, it leaves you speechless.
I haven’t seen it, but quite sure that I will love it!
This has been going on for at least two years where I live. I had my first Halloween candy sighting two weeks ago at a Dollar General. Spotted some at Walmart last weekend.
The stores barely have the back to school stuff out. Usually the fall/Halloween stuff takes the place of the school stuff on the shelves.
If you buy that Halloween candy now and you think that it will ever see the inside of a trick or treat bag you are delusional. You are going to eat it. If it does make it to a t or t bag, you have some super human willpower or you forgot where you hid it in late July.
When does school start where you are? Here in Southern California most are going back August 12. Two weeks from now.
We don’t go back until second week of September
August! Damn these kids don’t get a break!
I’m in AZ, we’ve been on summer break since May 25. Going back Aug 10, we’ve had plenty of break. We have this schedule so we can finish up the semester before winter break. Summer lasts until late October here, so at least we get to be in the AC during the very hot part.
In BC school is over in the last few days of June, and everyone goes back the first week of September.
Yes. Dollar General already has Halloween candy out. Barely any school supplies out. Can we just enjoy summer.
Halloween isn’t quite such a big deal here in the UK but the small supermarket near my home gets the first Easter chocolate out on a small shelf at the back of the store the day after Christmas.
I hope Bob Odenkirk is okay! I’ve loved him since Mr. Show. He’s fantastic in everything he’s in 🙏
Agreed, that news got me this morning. Hope he recovers fully. Love him and everything he does.
There’s a great interview with him on the Smartless podcast.
I think the candy industry is trying to make up for its losses from last year. IIRC, they make the majority of their profits off Halloween.
I love fall so I’m not mad October is being rushed in. Even the weather has been cooperating with me.
As someone who works in grocery retail….tell people not to buy it! P
Ok but I want those big jars of M and M’s I see in that last picture 🧐😍
We have the peanut ones. It’s hard to keep my hands out of it.
I didn’t give out candy last year and won’t be giving out candy this year. Sorry kids but the pandemic ain’t over.
I did give out candy, but it was all wrapped candy in gift bags on a folding table outside that the kids could come up and take one by one, while I waved from the doorway 10 ft away. (And keeping an eye out I was able to spot disinfect, or pull bags, if any little kid got too handsy with the display)
I did a little set up with a birch reindeer from the previous Christmas that I repurposed as a spooky ghost dog with gauzy stuff draped over him, glowing eyes and glow in the dark paw prints leading up to the table
I don’t usually decorate for Halloween but 2020 was such a crazy year I figured what the hey 😃 🎃
That sounds really cute & I bet the kids in your neighborhood really loved it!
I’ve been working in the grocery business for over 10 years and upper management always pushes stores to put it out asap because people will buy it! Hell, last year we had to put out advent calendars 2 weeks before Halloween and we sold a case in a few days!
OMG….I love Halloween and Halloween candy, well, any seasonal candy really, but this means that I’ll buy it and as a result, I’ll eat it. So let’s just stop it right damn now!
Saw candy corn at a CVS this week- it’s just wrong
candy corn is wrong at ANY TIME of the year.
Agreed!!
Haven’t seen Halloween candy but have seen Halloween/Fall decor in more than one store now. My mom gets emails from Joann Fabrics and one actually said, “Halloween is right around the corner.” Like… what? lol
In fairness to Joann’s, if you’re making your costume or your kid’s costumes, it’s wise to get started sooner rather than later. I’ve seen people at the cut table on like October 28th talking a big game. I always roll my eyes because I have no confidence that those costumes are going to get finished in time for Halloween.
I have a faux floral design business, so I’m on the lookout right now for Halloween stuff! I sell my designs in a store and they are accepting fall items on August 1. I’m done with fall now and I’m moving on to Halloween!
Yaaaaaassss cajun seasoning on pasta is fire!!! I season my steaks with it too. Love that spicy stuff! Slap yo mama is my go-to brand.
Try it on fish (salmon, halibut) with minced garlic, and a little balsamic glaze… OMG.. to DIE for!
Yesss, Nine Perfect Strangers looks like my next binge watch… Can’t get enough of Liane Moriarty and Nicole’s pillowy frozen face.
I think this is her catharsis for all that Scientology sh*t with Cruise.
I reckon you’re right!
The trailer looks great, I’ll def be watching this one
Nine Perfect Strangers was my first Liane Moriarty book and I just loved it. I’m saving Big Little Lies for last, but I didn’t watch the show.
I’m definitely in the minority, but part of what makes seasonal items special is that they are…well…SEASONAL!! I don’t want to see fall things out when the heat index is 110° F!! I can sort of understand at the craft places. It takes time to make those things, so you want them out a bit earlier.
Halloween and Christmas are definitely the holidays that stores push the envelope the most for each year. It dilutes what makes them special.
Lol growing up in FL “seasonal” things never resonated.
It makes sense to put it out when back to school stuff goes out because parents also buy candy now for school lunches.
Feeling seriously deprived that my mom never packed me candy!
I’m old enough t remember when stores actually had Thanksgiving decorations and themes before starting with Christmas. I specifically said Christmas because that’s all there was then – maybe Hanukkah decorations here or there.
Hoping the best for Bob Odenkirk, the MVP of nearly everything he’s ever done.
Too soon for me. But if they can make a profit by putting it out now, I guess I can’t fault the stores. No one is forcing people to buy it.
The point is to buy Halloween candy early, eat it all because it’s sitting there and what the hell it’s nowhere near Halloween, and then buy a whole new batch later on.
You know what? I’ve had a lot of reasons to not want to shop at hobby lobby anymore, but follow a few links on that cuneiform tablet. Hobby Lobby has at one point acquired thousands of relics that belong in Iraq. What hubris. You own a large chain store in the name of God and think that gives you the right to these antiquities. I swear to God, I’ve never understood that Indiana Jones line more than now. It’s like people who keep tigers as pets. It’s not yours. They’re not meant for you. Keeping a giant live predator does not actually imbue you with some sort of god/kinglike quality. I just can’t.
Yes, kgeo! I boycotted HL about 10 years ago for the reasons you state (and more), and haven’t bought anything from them since then. The oh-so-“Christian” family that owns the company are greedy, greedy people, and only in it for the money. The stores are full of mass produced crap (not USA-made) that people think is the best thing ever for decorating–it’s less Hobby and more Lobby. On a related note…Halloween candy on shelves in July is just as bad as Christmas in Hobby Lobby in June. It’s all just too early, and all in the name of the almighty dollar. Just quit shopping for stuff you don’t need, people.
There are all sorts of hinky things with Hobby Lobby. They spent all that money for their infernal Bible Museum and got in trouble for buying looted antiquities and for forgeries, but get this: Unlike Andrew Mellon and others when they started the National Galley of Art, for an example, the people behind the Bible Museum are keeping possession of their goodies. That raised a lot of eyebrows in the museum world and DC. Basically, it means that if their museum goes under they just reclaim all of their possessions and go home. They treating the exhibits like loaned objects. That isn’t how it’s supposed to work. When you found a museum like this, and like NGA, you DONATE the objects to the permanent collection, transferring possession to the museum itself.
Like I said, hinky.
I had no idea HL was buying illegal antiquities/cultural heritage only to create what amounts to a fake museum. And in DC, where we have so many museums devoted to the history & people of the US. They are beneath contempt & I hope one day they get their reckoning.
This should be illegal. I come from a country where most of these candies are sold, but manufactured with different recipes. For instance, we have cane sugar in our candy, sodas, and even Heinz Ketchup. I now live in the US and everything taste like crap because they keep putting syrup in everything. Sugar is for sure not good, but corn syrup etc is worse.
I’ve educated myself when it comes to nutrition a lot during covid and I would never give my child anything but dates, pure organic maple syrup, stevia, or monk fruit. We say no thanks to diabetes in my family. Big companies should really reformulate the recipes of their candy bars.
I’m old enough to remember the original taste & texture of a lot of these candies. You’re right, they’re made with corn syrup now, but used to be made with actual cane sugar. Nothing tastes as good to me any more, so I don’t buy.
That corn syrup factor explains a lot. Hershey bars have been straight-up bleh and virtually tasteless for a while. They used to be terrific.
Yup, Sams Club had candy and costumes out last week already.
No. No. No.
And do not even think about talking Xmas at me until after Turkey Day!
Mmmm, turkey and dressing sounds good. 😀
It’s frustrating how they push the seasons earlier and earlier just for the money. I love October and Halloween, but we only just entered Green Chilie season in NM and I am not in the mood for my favorite season yet.
As for the candy, of course they figure everyone will eat it all well before hand, because there is no way that candy will still be fresh enough for Halloween. It’s pretty cynical. Buy some now, buy a lot more later in season.
Also, summer is not really a good season for Reese’s peanut butter cups. They don’t even stock them in vending machines this time of year – for the most part – because the heat just turns them into soup.
On Kavanaugh — I still don’t think I’ll ever be the same after watching the way Christine BF was treated, the mockery they all made of her brave, clear, and well-informed testimony. And knowing that man gets to sit on the highest court in the land and decide what happens w women’s bodies…
Can we too please stop calling this kind of thing “sexual misconduct” — not sure what in general to use instead but “misconduct” is just way too anemic for what it is… God this stuff makes me nuts… Thanks for covering it here…
An individual being an abusive jerk or committing a crime is bad enough but in the Kavanaugh nomination we had two or three entire federal institutions (staffed with hundreds of people who are PAID BY U.S. TAXPAYERS to do their d***** jobs and who took an oath RE their duty to the country and their organization’s mission) that steadfastly refused to even pretend to carry out their basic duties of vetting a nominee for a LIFETIME appointment to the highest court of the land.
It was shameful, unjust, infuriating and probably illegal.
Lol, I don’t think we can stop stores from bringing out the spooky shit on July 5th.
The idea of children grabbing candy out of a common bowl has always made me cringe. Hopefully, with covid 19, that practice will go the way of the Do-Do.
