During the American coverage of the Olympics, we’ve been gifted with endless previews for Free Guy, Ryan Reynolds’ latest movie. Every time I see one of the previews, I’m like “wait, is that Jodie Comer?!?!” It is. Jodie Comer is Ryan’s costar and I bet they had a ball working together. Jodie didn’t bother flying in for the premiere of Free Guy though, so Ryan’s wife Blake Lively had to provide the glamour on the red carpet. Did it work?
Blake wore this Prabal Gurung gown to her husband’s premiere. I… do not understand. Why this dress? Why this vibe? I was shocked to find out that it is Prabal Gurung – it’s so Vanna White, so game-show-hostess. I get that cut-outs and midriffs are “in” for Pandemic Year #2 style, but this is a terrible example of how to do the trend! It just looks cheap. Oh well, at least Blake and Ryan look nice together. I like that he wore his glasses on the red carpet – I actually think he looks more handsome with glasses.
This was apparently Blake & Ryan’s first red carpet together in two years! Most of that is because of the pandemic and Blake hasn’t been working that much in recent years, she’s been at home with the babies (which is work too!!).

I apologize in advance, because I am sure there will be tons of comments on here saying how sweet and nice she is, but everytime she steps on a red carpet she has that smug “look at me, look at me” grin and I can’t see anything else.
That dress looks cheap and tacky. Can’t see why some people consider her a fashion icon.

I get what you’re saying. It’s like she got her nose job, eyelid job and teeth capped, and then married her cute successful actor husband, and she’s all set.
Yes, exactly. And luckily for her Reynolds had tons of chances to become a big action star, even after all those flops. I still think he basically plays the same role over and over and his sarcasm is getting old, but that’s just me, I’m sure many people still find him so funny.
That’s a bit unfair, Minx. She is successful in her own right and has carried off many performances in a lead role. She may not be the most emotive actress but is very watchable on screen. The famous husband probably elevated her profile but she was well known pre Ryan Reynolds thanks to Gossip Girl and her indie films. And as for cosmetic surgery, it comes with the territory as a Hollywood actress. No judgment from me.
IMO she’s a serviceable actress who got a higher profile and more money thanks to RR’s later lucrative roles…not back when he was doing, say, Definitely, Maybe. So I agree with what Lee said that BL emits “I’m a STAH!” in her more recent red carpet appearances.
I agree with you @Lee. However, I think they are both smug. Her look at me I’m an awesome mom, wife, and have a great body and I do my own hair and makeup, and he with I’m playing the same role again with a beautiful wife that puts me first. (Not like Scarlet, where he had to be #2 and stand behind.).
Well, she’s female so it’s easy to attack her by claiming her path to success was always to have plastic surgery, land a successful husband and stop working. That is the sum of the comments against her right?
She had her own career, had good work done which she paid for herself, kept her dating life surprisingly low key and is now happily married to an actor that at the time they were dating Scarlett J (A bigger name with more sway than the national lampoon guy) was actively trying to blackball as fallout from a bitter divorce.
I get people hate the smug look, but we all have a resting face. And sure the dress is awful, but she’s taken risks others wouldn’t before and looked amazing.
I never got the Blake hate.

The irony is that Blake is actually more successful than Ryan.
Outside of Deadpool, he’s meh.
Lively’s enjoyed acclaim in Simple Favour, Shallows, Cafe Society, Age of Adaline et al.
Plus, Gossip Girl was part of the NY conversation the way SATC was, good & bad.
But way cool, to diminish her career as only being Ryans+1🙄🙄🙄

I’m with you both on this. Honestly, I think her showing up in this dress with that stance is a product of how insecure she was about her weight and not being able to fit into the red carpet clothes available to her after her third pregnancy, and the limited red carpets between now and then after she lost the weight.
She is an actress that has had a solid career and three children, who has been consistently acting since 2005 with a new movie announced in 2020. Maybe she could have done more between 2018 – 2021 as her husband as done, but maybe she also just prefers to spend time with her three children. I don’t see anything wrong with that, and apart from Deadpool, I’ve also viewed her as the more successful of the two. Ryan has had more product, but it also lands all over the spectrum, whereas her projects on the whole tend to be more successful.

What, like women can only be likeable if they are coy, modest or self conscious? Cute but don’t know it? Smart but doesn’t show it? Successful but not at the expense of being polite? Need to make themselves smaller so others feel comfortable around them?

So WHAT if she’s self-satisfied about her body, her marriage, and her life? I think it’s great when women (and men) are excited about how they look and feel.
My issue with Blake was the plantation wedding, which was a really bad idea. They apologized for it.
I like Ryan – he doesn’t seem to take his success for granted because he knows just how badly he can suck on screen. Also – The Proposal is one of my guilty pleasures.
@Lily & Jedege: Well said. I admire women who are unapologetic about beaming in the spotlight. She put in the work & it’s very insulting to insinuate that she got there based on whom she married, she has been working consistently in the industry all her adult life. Also, I don’t think she looks smug here, it might just be her camera face. But if she does to some people, well she earned it!
I have heard from two different people that she is a major BITCH. One worked on Gossip Girl. She had no problems keeping the entire crew and other cast members waiting for hours until she felt like getting out of the trailer to shoot her scenes. It would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in budget overages to pay everyone OT because of her whims. The other person worked on L’Oréal commercials with her. Same BS, but also giving a lot of attitude to everyone. These are people close to me, and ever since I heard these stories I cannot stand her. Her taste in fashion and jewelry are so tacky too.
Who are these people ‘close to you’ who think it’s ok to call a woman a bitch? You need new friends.
Let’s be real, when beautiful and/or smart women get called names, especially *bitch*, it has a lot more to do with the fragile ego of the name caller, that the integrity and worth ethic of the subject.

I have a soft spot for Blake because I loved her in “The Town,” which Ben Affleck filmed in Boston, always a plus for me. Blake played a discarded good-time woman with a kid. I never watched Gossip Girl.

I have this problem as well. Even when I am super fit in many clothes I look thick in the middle. And I also suffer from the delusion that because (when) I’m at fighting weight I can wear “anything” (I cannot). She looks like she’s feeling herself so kudos to her!

Yikes! I’m sorry, that is one sh*tty, tacky-looking dress. From the side it didn’t look so bad but as I scrolled down…it’s just cutting her body in all kinds of weird ways. Makes her rib cage, of all things, look broad.
And the top looks too small for her chest. Like she is about to burst out of it.

I feel like if the top part was a bit lower it would shape her body better, it’d define her waist nicely.
I was trying to see value in this dress from the side, but the frontal view removed all the good will. Blake has a lovely figure, but the cut outs remove her waist entirely, and the shapeless drape of the skirt portion is tragic. Something nice: I love the colour on her.

I think the dress is pretty. Now she is a knock out and has certainly worn better, more interesting, more flattering things.
But it is pretty, and i hope she had fun glamming up after spending so much time at home with three children under the age of 6(??).

Honestly, she looks awful. The dress is some Winter Olympics fug and it cuts her in the worst places. It makes her look dumpy and I know she isn’t! The color is incredibly unflattering on her. And as a couple, their outfits don’t compliment each other- like did they not discuss what they were wearing? Throw it all in the garbage and start over, Blake.

Meh. They’ve made some big donations. They’ve both talked in detail about their whiteness and not having to worry about their children in the same way parents non-white children do. Ryan directly addressed their wedding location within the last year or so. I overstated by saying I like them “a lot.” I should have said I like these two. 🙂 So I’m not gonna spend the time to find Ryan’s comments. But he talked about how ignorant they were in the past. The dress doesn’t work. Pair it with the high pony tail and she really does look like she’s going for I Dream Of Jeanie. It’s kind of a sporty hairstyle for the dress. She needs like a jeweled scrunchy for it or something, to go with the vibe.
I have never seen her in anything. I missed Gossip Girl entirely, was too busy to watch at the time. I’ve liked him well enough in what I’ve seen, which is basically just the early Van What’s-HIs-Name movies.
She’s a lovely woman obviously but I find her beauty very bland, or something. Maybe because I am a Basic White Woman myself, with virtually 100% Northern European/British Isles blood, and I find my own looks boring. Give her red hair or something and I’d probably feel differently.
Blake is a stunning woman, almost anything looks amazing on her. This dress screams “80s figure skater” to me.
My 2 daughters were late 80’s figure skaters. No way would I allow either one of them on the ice in this get up. Coaches allow skaters quite a bit of personal choice in costuming for competitions, but this crosses the line and would have been thumbs down for sure.
I like this couple, sure, flawed, but I do enjoy their movies. I always say this in BL threads but not everyone needs to be Meryl Streep, and I’ve enjoyed most movies I’ve seen her in. The Age of Adaline is probably my favorite, as I’ve watched it twice. There’s room for her.
As for RR, same applies, I’m actually really looking forward to seeing Free Guy, wity Jodie Comer, whom I adore. Not every movie needs to be gold standard. I love entertaining, fun flicks.
Anyway… I dislike the dress but I agree with a commenter above, I think she felt she needed to come out with the skinny body after baby no. 3 weight stayed on for a while – which is totally fine and normal.
