Here are some photos from last night’s AFI Fest premiere of King Richard, the true story of how Richard Williams trained and coached his daughters Venus and Serena Williams to be the champions they are today. Will Smith plays Richard Williams and Venus and Serena executive produced the film, and everything was done with their permission and say-so. What’s exciting about this is that new generations will be introduced to the story of the Williams sisters’ rise to dominance, and it also refocuses a lot of energy onto Venus. Venus was the first through the door, she was the older sister and everything Serena did, she did because she was trying to be like Venus. I love that this is the story the sisters wanted to tell, because Venus’s journey and glass-ceiling-breaking is often lost in the narrative of Serena’s historic dominance.
I thought for a second that Serena wore one of her own designs, from her S By Serena collection, but no – both Serena wore David Koma (as did Olympia, who wore a smaller version of Serena’s catsuit). Venus Williams wore Bach Mai. I love Venus’s visual callback with the beads in her hair – that was a huge f–king deal when the Williams sisters were teenagers, the fact that they played tennis with beads in their hair.
I’m also including photos of the Smith family – Will and Jada attended the premiere together, and Willow and Jaden posed together, separate from their parents. A few months ago, I would have said that the critical buzz meant that Will was one of the big contenders for Best Actor awards. But as I said when I covered his GQ interview… Will stepped on his own Oscar campaign by releasing his memoir. All of the headlines are about his f–ked up marriage drama. Who is even talking about his performance in this film?

Venus looks like a goddess that she is. Not a fan of Serena’s catsuit, but Olympia is very cute.
The pic of Olympia and her papa is melting this ice cold heart
The beads in her hair are perfect. I hope Serena and Alexis stay together and happy forever.
@ Snazzy, it’s certainly melting this cranky arse of a biddy’s heart!! ❤️ They are adorable!!
I think they both look great. For a while Serena had really heavy eyebrows. Her more natural brows really open her face up. I think if the other side of the catsuit had studs too it would look more even to me, but everyone looks so radiant!
I like the idea, it’s the execution that bugs me: there is some unfortunate bunching happening in the crotch area that makes the whole thing look cheap.
Yes, stunning. I remember the beads and that the tennis establishment hated them. When is the tennis world going to have a reckoning about the way they treated and still talk about the Williams sisters? Last summer was an opportunity but it wasn’t taken and the people who were involved in that are now being lauded for being belated outspoken about domestic violence. Yeah, I’m looking at you Mary Carillo.
I can’t wait to see this. Their story is the story of legend, and it began with their parents. I hope the Oscars campaign gets back on track and this wins ALL the awards.
I’m really looking forward to this movie. It just seems like its going to be a feel-good inspirational sports movie and I always love those, then you factor in that its a true story and that venus and serena were involved in making it (so you know its going to get the facts right), and I think its going to be really good. Also, I love that it will be on HBOMax so I can watch it there, lol.
I think Will Smith killed his chances of being taken seriously since he did that sitdown interiew on Jada’s show
I can’t even look at them anymore. They need to just go away for a while.
Venus and Serena look magnificent! Will Smith is still a handsome guy, but that picture is giving me some 80 year old crazy uncle vibes
I’ve always loved beaded hair, ever since I was little. Later in life I realized it wouldn’t be appropriate to wear them myself as I’m not black. Still, my love for them hasn’t changed one bit, and I clearly remember watching S&V play with beads in their hair and thinking it looked f*cking awesome.
me too. I remember thinking how cool they looked in the the Black girls’ hair when I was in school (and how they sounded, clacking together!), and I remember finding them at the bottom of the pool in the summer. I’d collect them and ask my mother to put them in my hair and she was like, “uh…probably not a good idea” (as I am not Black, either).
The story is the two sisters, and to have the movie focus on a man just really irks me. Venus and Serena clearly don’t have an issue with it, but it’s the pattern we see all the time: women’s accomplishments being co-opted by men.
And Will Smith and his cult family can get f*cked.
I kind of feel the same, but better since they’re on board with it. I’m going to watch and see how it plays out.
They both look beautiful!
I can’t agree. They didn’t set out to tell their story. They wanted to tell their father’s story, as evidenced by the name of the movie.
Good for them. I just won’t watch it.
the Smiths are not scientologists. they were courted/recruited pretty heavily for a while several years back, but they are never-ins.
It’s not their biography, it’s the story of how their Dad trained, nurtured their talent and FOUGHT for them to be taken seriously and be respected. They weren’t women, they were little girls some adult had to do that for them. Good grief.
The movie doesn’t “focus on a man”, it tells the story of how THEIR FATHER fought for them and nurtured them. Not only is it important because it is their story to share, but it also counters the still too prevalent stories about Black fathers and their (lack of) engagement with their children. It’s also a powerful example of a Black father being a driving force to move his family up the socioeconomic ladder which is very challenging in the US these days (despite all of the American Dream stories we hear). Venus and Serena didn’t burst forth, fully formed, from the ether. Nor was it their own determination that started them out. Someone fought to get them launched and that someone was their father.
We’ll definitely be checking this out in my household. I can’t wait to share this story with my son.
@ Yup, me, you are right!! He was instrumental in their ability to play and he taught them from an early age. They can’t tell their story without including their father. Tiger Woods dad did the same thing, though I don’t know if Tiger had trouble playing, but given he was black, I would assume so. The world for POC, especially WOC is still incredibly racist but children of color will see this exemplary story play out and it might create another set of dynamic WOC in history, or soon. It’s extremely important for children to see women of their skin color that can take over the world to prove to them that yes, that could be you too!! I am so excited for this movie!!
They both look stunning, but Venus…magnificent.
@ Gigi LaMoore, they do look stunning!! I applaud their movie and let’s face it, they are stunning!!
Venus FTW. Prefer serena’s hair black like this and not blonde. Lil Venus looks beautiful as well (assuming that’s the actress that plays her). CANNOT stand will smith’s facial hair. Forgot what it’s called as it is not a goatee.
It’s a Van Dyke when it’s just the chin part with no moustache, and agree, it is distracting and not flattering. I also agree with @FHMom that Jada and Will need to go away, nobody asked you to spill your guts about your marriage, and the way it was done was so off-putting.
Venus and Serena are amazing, trailblazers in their sport, dominant competitors, and beautiful women. I’m looking forward to this movie.
@AMA1977 thank you ! “Van Dyke”. A style that I can’t imagine it being flattering on anyone ! Like the mullet.
@ livealot, I don’t why any man would wear this as it’s not attractive at all.
I actually want to see this because it looks like Will gives a good to great performance. That being said, I think he overplayed his hand by doing all the TMI interviews about their marriage.
Can’t wait to watch this, I think this is the first time a movie deals with events that occured while I was growing up. I still remember sitting with my family watching their matches! Don’t know if women’s tennis will get that much attention again, one only hopes.
Now let’s be superficial: Serena sure loves an asymmetrical catsuit. The only complain I have is the watch she is wearing, but I guess it’s some sponsorship deal. Venus looks flawless.
It’s interesting that the actresses have a similar style/pose to the real ones! The Serenas are giving us fashion faces whereas the Venuses are having a good time.
I wish it was easier to see everyone’s outfits against that Black background.
I love Venus and Serena and I’m really excited to watch this film with my family.
And I’m going to go against the grain and say that I love that Will and Jada have been open about their unconventional marriage agreements. So many people still have extremely narrow views about what makes a marriage work, even when trying to live within those restrictions is not working for them. Will and Jada speaking may give others permission to create their own unconventional (but, ultimately, more authentic to them) relationship/family agreement and to move on from partnerships that aren’t serving them.
I’m someone who has been in a LAT relationship for 15 years, by choice, and I cannot count the number of people who have tried to poopoo my marriage while complaining about their husbands in their homes. I also cannot count the number of women who have told me that they wish they could have an arrangement like mine (but that they never would because …)
The Smith kids always look so unhappy.
They have never been beautiful in my opinion. But they look good in their outfits.
This comment is completely unnecessary and mean-spirited.
Venus looks fabulous. And I love the mommy and me outfits. I hope we see more of them as they promote the movie
Olympia is stunning. I wonder if she’ll go into professional tennis like her mom. Such a cutie pie!
I highly doubt Will Smith stepped on his chances by releasing his memoir.
He will get nominated, whether or not he wins depends on his competition. Hollywood loves Will Smith and his past infidelities as well as his wife’s at this point in time after the whirlwind of the past 4 years, won’t be a big deal. If the consensus is that King Richard is a great movie and he doesn’t get nominated, Hollywood will receive a lot of blow back.
Venus looks great, Serena not so much and she needs to quit it with the lip injections; it’s getting a bit overboard.
Absolutely LUVVVV how Serena paid homage to the beaded hair styles they wore growing up. I grew up with them. Venus IS Superwoman as per the commercial. The smiths are drippin’
Alllaround GLORIOUS
