The line in the Polanski article “…it doesn’t help that the pro-Polanski faction has Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese, and the opposition has Sherri Shepherd and ‘Nellie Olsen’.” Made me laugh. Woody Allen’s stamp of approval of appropriate sexual behavior means nothing.
The plea deal he was offer only for a few days. I bet when it is all said and done he gets released for time served. He was so careful and lived a very high profile life as a fugitive, I used to wonder if he would ever be caught.
I think there may be more than a few that feel it is best to keep quiet. I can imagine that some don’t want to jeopardize their own prospects for work etc. More and more I am coming to respect Chris Rock. He is not consistently funny (to me), but he has been know to make spot on observations. His comments were spot on in the Polanski case.
I think it’s unfair to lump all the thousands of people who work in the film industry together and say “Hollywood” supports him. A few directors and others have spoken out – I don’t think they represent everyone in the industry.
I’m proud of those who weren’t too afraid to stand up and say NO, I don’t support him. I wish more would, but at the same time, I also think it’s fine to simply not comment on it – maybe some are scared of losing future work, maybe some are uninterested or unaware, or maybe some are just keeping their opinions to themselves – whatever, it’s their right to stay quiet if they want.
I honestly can’t understand supporting this man, or petitioning for his release. I can understand respecting his work, or for those who know him personally to be concerned for him, but they all need to think about what he did, both the original crime and then fleeing the country, and realize that they need to step back and let the courts and lawyers work it all out.
“Hollywood” obviously has no common sense and as we all know they “Stick” together. So, of course it’s no surprise that people are not talking out against him. It is a sad shame in this day and age. But, money makes the world go round. I am all for those who do speak up though, but they have been very few and very far between
What were Chris Rock’s comments? I think he is pretty funny too.
Hmmm. The same thing happened within the Hip Hop Community with Chris Brown. And I happen to think he had way less pull. He’s not Jay-Z, yet those idiots closed ranks.
This groupthink mentality is disgusting. People need to take a stand against what’s wrong, no matter who the perpetrator is!
Yes, Iggles.. the “groupthink” mentality is disgusting..but no matter which way it goes. I am never afraid to speak my mind..but then I’m not a sheep, afraid to speak up when my view differs from the view currently held by the crowd. Does anyone in Hollywood HAVE to sign a petition or speak on the matter? Are they asked for opinion they feel they can’t give? Please.
Chris Rock on Leno was posted on this site a few days back and is on http://www.hulu.com on thurs 10/1 about 16:44 mark he was on for a bit. At 19:11 He spoke out in his way against all the supporters talking about what a great director Polanski is. Rock: Defending him cuz he made sonme good movies 30 years ago? Even Johnny Cochrane didn’t have the nerve to say but did you see OJ’s play against New England?” He was pretty funny and then outrageous.
I do not care how good a director he is, he drugged sodomized and raped a 13 year old child. H ei guilty and there should be no get out of jail free card.
there is a petition for both sides either in support of his freedom or support of his conviction here: http://feministguidetohollywood.blogspot.com/2009/10/natalie-portman-thinks-rape-is-okay.html
i saw we boycott the people’s films who sign the petition in support of him. i will never see another natalie portman film.
He’s a child molester and anyone who supports him is morally bankrupt.
mxml thanks for the link. I am toying with the idea of adding something to my twitter. I am certain most folks won’t see it. But I realized I too am somewhat chicken to state my feeling more publically. I guess I am not a lot different that people who are keeping quiet. I know a few of the people that signed the petition and more importantly they actually now me as well. I wish I could be more like Chris Rock. I am in no way famous, but travel in similar circles.
I 100% agree with Jules.
Facts –
He drugged a 13 year old girl.
Then got her drunk on Jack daniels.
He raped her.
Then he sodomized her.
Then he ‘came’ all over her.
More facts-
That is rape.
That is child endangerment.
That is statutory rape.
That is assault [via forced drugs].
Those are SERIOUS crimes.
More more facts-
If it were you – the average Joe who commited these acts, the SWAT team would have been all over your house after the fact.
And if you tried to fly to France? Good luck getting off the plane a free man, you would be arrested on the spot and then beaten black and blue [deserved].
More more more facts-
Polanski is a rich scumbag.
His money and connections bought him 30+ years of being a free ‘fugitive’ [despite having his home address easy to find by anyone, including the FBI..].
Since he is rich and famous, even if imprisoned he will go to a comfy ‘celeb’ prison. Basically that is a mansion for rich criminals, complete with saunas, pools, HDTV, gourmet food and internet. Disgusting? Yep.
Money talks and creeps walk.
More more more more facts-
Anyone who supports this slug of a man is disgusting.
I have been hearing a lot of rumor and speculation of why Mr Polanski ran away, but I have a difficult time believing this simply because Mr Polanski was rich before this happened, and I am sure he got the best lawyers to defend him, so if there was even a hint of the Judge or the DA doing something wrong or improper, I am fairly certain his lawyers would have jumped at the chance to try the case, so the only reason I can see him running was that his lawyers informed him that the Judge was in his right to change the sentence.
