On Thursday, Novak Djokovic made his first “public appearance” since his ass was deported from Melbourne, Australia just twelve hours before the Australian Open began. Novak’s deportation was huge international news for two weeks, as Novak wrongly believed he could enter Oz unvaccinated (but with a hokey medical exemption). Novak said, as he left, that he would speak about what happened after the tournament was over. I imagine it was very hard for him to see Rafael Nadal win AO last Sunday, although Novak did send his congratulations to Rafa and Ash Barty. Anyway, on Thursday, Novak did an event with Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic, who is a huge Djoker fan. Vucic made threats against Australia during the controversy, and he was (I guess) trying to help out Djokovic:
Novak Djokovic described his detention and deportation from Australia that prevented him from defending his Australian Open title as an “unfortunate event” and thanked the Serbian president for his support. An 11-day saga over Djokovic’s entry visa ended with the Serb being deported for failing to meet Australia’s strict COVID-19 vaccination requirements.
The top-ranked tennis star met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Thursday and described the events in Australia as “unexpected, to say the least.”
“I wanted to meet with you today because, primarily as a citizen of Serbia, I felt a great need to thank you for great support that you, as the president of Serbia, gave me, as well as all state institutions during the unfortunate events in Australia,” Djokovic said. “Although I was alone in detention, and faced with many problems and challenges, I wasn’t feeling lonely. I had huge support primarily from my family, all of the close people in my life, entire Serbian nation, many people with good intentions from the region and the world.”
He did not speak about details of the events in Australia, promising to give his “version” later.
Djokovic’s meeting with the increasingly autocratic Vucic drew criticism from some of his fans in the Balkan country, where he is generally considered an icon and a hero. The critics say Vucic used the event to boost his popularity ahead of general elections scheduled for April.
Novak is truly the only tennis player I know of who could turn “being unvaccinated” into a potential United Nations-level international incident, complete with threats from a strong-man despot-president. I suspect Novak will probably tell “his version” of events next week, in advance of his appearance at the Dubai Open (which starts on Valentine’s Day). Meanwhile, Novak’s biographer claims that the events of the past month have convinced Novak to get vaccinated:
Novak Djokovic’s biographer claims the Serbian will now get his Covid-19 vaccination because he had to sit and watch Rafael Nadal win a record 21st Grand Slam at the Australian Open. It appears that Nadal’s victory, combined with other tournaments enforcing stricter rules regarding vaccination, could have changed his mind.
His biographer Daniel Muksch appeared on Austrian TV channel ServusTV and said: ‘What you hear from his environment, I think he’s getting vaccinated. Maybe the final in Melbourne also contributed to that. Rafael Nadal’s 21 is driving him, no question.’
You know what? I’ll take it. I don’t care why people are getting vaccinated, just as long as they get the motherf–king shots. If Novak will only get vaxxed because of his rivalry with Nadal and his need to hold the most Grand Slam titles, so be it. It’s so strange to me that Novak literally never considered that before, like last year, when Tennis Australia announced their vaccine mandate for tennis players. We’re months away from Roland Garros in Paris, and there’s still back-and-forth about whether vaccines will be mandatory for non-French players. I believe that at the end of the day, France will likely enforce a mandate and that will be a huge factor in Novak getting vaccinated too.

so all of the “not sure what I’m putting in my body” and “you don’t know the long-term effects” and “the gov’t can’t tell me what to do” all go out the door when $$$ or status is on the line.
shocker.
Yep. I know more than one person who suddenly abandoned all of their “scruples” about vaccines when it became necessary to show a vaccine passport to eat in at restaurants.
I think Australia was a rude awakening. He clearly thought the rules didn’t apply to him and this has caused a major rethink. I also wonder if any sponsors had a word.
SHOCKER 🙄
Some of my distant acquaintances claim they can get a death certificate pretty easily in Serbia. Even if he’s getting ‘vaxxed’ – I doubt he’d get the real deal but rather a saline injection for show. Anti-vax sentiment is really widely spread within ex-yugo communities. But one can wish he sees the light, even if it’s only out of competitiveness and spite.
Blood tests will show titer level of antigen produced. Will not differentiate between actual infection or vaccination. I’m guessing the level would be lower for antigens produced recently or in the past. Hence the need for yearly flu vax’s and booster shots.
I hope he doesn’t. As we know from the experience with Trump and his brain-dead disciples, there is no way to change these peoples’ minds, so i wouldn’t count on that.
But I really want Djokovic to finish his career in infamy, to be best known for being a stupid dickhead who missed out on a chance of beating Nadal and Federer and become the best of all times, because he refused to believe in science.
I’m pretty sure he’ll still be remembered for being a stupid dickhead, regardless of what his stats look like at the end of his career. He sealed his legacy with this idiotic stunt in Australia.
+1 @novaroux!
I think this is just a PR move to save face. His reputation is already shot. If this were a real story he would just do it. This is him stringing along his sponsors, telling people what they want to hear.
I don’t trust him to get “real” vaccinated given his weird fascination with alternative remedies. But I do take satisfaction with him being “forced” to get vaccinated because in his absence Rafael Nadal was able to win a Grand Slam and shove it in his unvaccinated face. Rafael is obviously smart and not making the COVID-19 vaccine his hill to die on because he wants to do anything possible to keep playing tennis. Novax just looks like an idiot being benched from a major tournament by trying to lie his way into Australia and for running around spreading covid while he was positive.
“Novax”. Brilliant. Hadn’t heard that before.
honestly – at this point he’s a proven liar and moron – and he will always be that.
So in the end greed and ego win out. Like in the post, I’ll take it too.
He’s got his manager working on a vaccination certificate. It will turn out that he was actually vaccinated before Covid-19 was even discovered.
Hahaha. Yeah, I hope border officials are very skeptical of whatever documents this person shows them for the rest of his life.
Of course he doesn’t want to miss out on millions of dollars. Why anti vaxxers are so full of shit, most will cave once their pocket books are effected and all those high horse stances go out the window. Of course poor anti vaxxers still don’t see they are just “sheeple” being used by the wealthier ones until they die or are no longer useful.
I hope he gets vaccinated and then I hope he effin LOSES. To whoever, Nadal, Medvedev, anyone.
This MF is not the greatest tennis player of all time, just the luckiest. He managed to stay injury-free and in good health long enough for Federer and Nadal to succumb to their injuries and health issues which affected their performance and ability to play regularly. And then this idiot took over the courts.
Yes he is a fantastic tennis player and yes, compared to other players, he’s one of the best out there. But he is not better than an injury-free Federer or Nadal in their top forms. He’s just lucky he doesn’t have to play Federer&Nadal from 10 years ago anymore.
I think Novak is very handsome. If he didn’t have COVID I would totally go on a date with him.
Erm… he doesn’t have covid. He is an anti vaxxer who claims he HAD covid in December 2021 but has since recovered. And where would you go on your date with Novax? No vaccine means no restaurants, no theatres, no clubs…. I guess you could go for a walk with social distancing… but sure. He’s Hot (zone pandemic patient zero)…
