Reporters based in Europe keep talking about how urgent everything feels there with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and millions of displaced Ukrainian refugees fleeing their country. Ukraine’s closest neighbors will likely take on the brunt of the immediate refugee crisis, although countries like Poland and Romania are not doing it alone – they’re getting an influx of international support from other nations, from the UN and from charities. Other European countries are now trying to figure out some medium-to-long-term solutions for Ukrainian refugees because, clearly, no one wants 2 million-plus displaced Ukrainians living in tents on the Polish border indefinitely. Which means countries like Belgium are now stepping up, and that includes the Belgian royal family.
The Belgian royal family will make three properties available for Ukrainian refugee families, the palace confirmed Thursday. Three Ukrainian families will be hosted by the Royal Trust, an entity managing the Belgian royal family’s assets, at two properties in Brussels and Wallonia. Families will move to those properties in early April.
An additional property in Tervuren, on the outskirts of Brussels, which formerly served as a vaccination center, will also be made available to the municipality for the collective accommodation of Ukrainian refugees. Belgium’s King Philippe visited the Heysel refugee center in Brussels on Wednesday and the Royal Trust formalized the decision on Thursday. The Royal Trust is an autonomous public institution that manages Belgian assets dating to the rule of Leopold II, in the early 1900s.
About 200,000 Ukrainian refugees are expected to arrive in Belgium, and 10,000 have already been registered in the country for temporary protection.
Personally, I believe that a lot of people – in Europe, in North America, in South America and elsewhere – have the compassion and welcoming spirit to offer their homes to refugees. I envy the fact that people have governments which actually make it easier for those compassionate enough to welcome refugees. It would take years for the American government to cut through the red tape to help hundreds of thousands of refugees to freely seek protection within the US. And here’s Belgium, organizing it in a matter of weeks.
Of course, it’s also notable that the Belgian royal family is getting involved and actually freeing up some of their unused royal-owned properties to house refugees. Gee, I wonder if the British royal family would ever do the same?
Senior officials in the Royal Household are looking into what extra practical measures they can take to provide support to what is expected to be an influx to Britain of people fleeing the war in eastern Europe. Palace officials have begun looking at the question after the Belgian royal family announced plans to open up three of its properties to house Ukrainian refugee families.
Britain’s Royal Family has stopped short of making a similar commitment so far but a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: “The Royal Household is looking at a number of ways to offer practical help and support.”
Aides declined to expand on what type of practical help the Firm might be able to provide.
The Queen and her family own dozens of properties at various private estates across the country in addition to official residences such as Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, Windsor Castle, Kensington Palace, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
Royal commentator Joe Little said there would be security concerns at some locations but he thought there would be available properties at others that could house refugees.
“You’d think there would be some properties available at Sandringham and Balmoral that are not necessarily needed at this time of year,” he said. Both are privately owned by the Queen but the Royal Household does also rent out properties on the estates of official residences and it is possible some of those might be vacant at the moment. Mr Little suggested that another practical way the Royal Household might be able to help was by allowing staff time off to volunteer and help at reception centres or charities greeting Ukrainian refugees arriving in Britain.
My guess is that no refugees will ever be welcome on royal or duchy property. But I love that Belgium is making everybody look bad. And it’s particularly rich to argue “oh, maybe there are one or two properties which are not particularly seasonable right now” as if the Queen and the Duchy of Cornwall are not the two biggest landholders in the entire UK. The Duchy of Cornwall owns SO MUCH property, you guys. It’s not even “royal land.” Charles could easily make accommodations for dozens (if not hundreds) of Ukrainian families on Duchy farms, estates and homes. Places like Windsor Castle, Sandringham and Balmoral also have all of these smaller homes and cottages as part of the larger estates, many of which are not currently being used. Even the Sandringham main house could house refugees – the Queen probably won’t return to Sandringham until December, for the love of God.

Not really, there will be an announcement vague and nonspecific in details. Priti Patel has been a strong advocate for Tories to return non-Brits to their countries at the expense of their NHS and farming etc. Windsors are complicit.. at most the Ukrainians get temporary status and stay in oligarchs properties
I heard that since Queen Liz is off to live elsewhere, there will be 750 rooms available in the palace. We’ll soon see if they are willing to share.
I’m in Australia and have been reading and hearing about Priti Patel. She’s a horrible person. Our Conservative PM announced that Ukraine refugees would immediately qualify for visas that will allow them to work, and/or study, and access our free healthcare. I’m waiting to hear the next announcement about where refugees will be housed. I have a large house and will ]offer a family or two accommodation until they acre able to return home. I wanted to do this for you middle eastern refugees, but was told this was not something the government was considering. Not then, not ever. No, because those refugees ended up in what essentially are off-shore prisons. Some have been there for more than 10 years, with no prospect of ever being able to come into our country. Australia’s treatment of people who are not white is despicable. This government has learnt nothing from its past treatment of our Indigenous population. The stain on our human rights history is still growing.
Sorry. Rant over.
They were able to rent to Epstein and Ghislaine those lovely cottages at Balmoral that are favorites of Liz. But nope, no refugees, there might be “security issues”. My sweet fanny. I’m just living in a joyful schadenfreude with all this bad news about the royal family-esp. those dullards and their “charm offensive” (I’ve never seen people with less “Charm”) You rarely get to see Karma in this life, and they are sure reaping it-long may it continue. I’m stuck at home with endometriosis pain, and at least it gives me something to do, lol.
Well said.
Good for the Belgian King!
Well done Sir!
And now I’ll take a moment, as I have since the invasion started, to send up a prayer that these refugees will be able to go home one day.
I’ll admit to getting a little choked up at how how quickly so many people here in the UK signed up to the scheme to offer accommodation to Ukrainians. The government may want to keep all (non-billionaire) foreigners out but the British people can still be welcoming and generous. Now we just need the government to actually start issuing visas and letting people in but that’s a whole other battle.
I think it shows that there are SO MANY people who are truly good and kind, and it’s something we have to remind ourselves in this despairing world right now. I hate the cliche but it’s true. Look for the helpers, there are so many more than we realize.
Good for the Belgian royal family!
I don’t think the British royals will follow suit. They could open up Buckingham Palace and house SO many people there now that the Queen is never going to live there again, or open up Sandringham for the next 6 months, or something – but they won’t.
BP is still undergoing renovations so it might not be a safe place to house people.
Kudos to the Belgians but I don’t expect the Windsors to do the same.
I think that when the BRF open their vast homes and properties will be when hell freezes over. Until then, it’s not happening.
But my hat is off to the Belgium family!!! Thank you for stepping up and showing the world how it’s done!!! Too bad Biden isn’t bringing some refugees back with him.
Instead of giving staff time off to volunteer, why doesn’t the BRF allow staff to volunteer during work hours so that they could still be paid? You know, like the royals get paid to wave, shake hands and accept some flowers.
@ AmyBee, I think that when the BRF open their vast homes and properties will be when hell freezes over. Until then, it’s not happening.
But my hat is off to the Belgium family!!! Thank you for stepping up and showing the world how it’s done!!! Too bad Biden isn’t bringing some refugees back with him.
@ Harla, I agree!! And why not some of the BRF? Are they too busy to volunteer or is it beneath them? How ridiculous to volunteer your staff time off to volunteer and this absolves you of paying them! My gawd, they look worse as each day passes!!
The Windsors didn’t even take in their refugee cousins so probably not, no.
(Nicky and Alix were stupid and didn’t leave/want to leave when they had the best chances so I don’t blame George V for their deaths. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have shade for George’s reaction or lack of action all the same.)
The Romanov’s weren’t refugees. George made the political decision to not provide safe haven to a disposed dictator.
The word of the day is hyperbole…
Tomorrow’s word will be sarcasm, if you’d like to study ahead.
IIRC, I think Nicholas and Alexandra didn’t leave when they could have because their children had measles, and that was pretty contagious at the time.
Ok I live in Belgium and I can’t find anything in the national press that confirms this story?
I think it was announced the 17th?
Apparently the Dutch royal family will announce something similar later today
RTL Belgique had an article that was published on the 16th (“Philippe et Mathilde proposent deux logements pour accueillir des réfugiés ukrainiens”). It mentions that only 3 families will be housed on royal property so it’s not like hundreds of refugees are going to be filling an entire palace or anything.
I live in Belgium too. Sadly, I only found out about it through People magazine (US) instead of Belgian news
Kudos to the Belgian royals. Perhaps they can now do the same thing for the one million Syrian refugees who are living in tents on the Polish border.
I was about to say…
This is just virtue signaling, and everyone is okay doing it for people who share their skin color. Let’s be clear, they do not share the same culture or history. Europe has been separated into Western Europe and the “Soviet bloc” for generations now. I hope they show compassion for all the refugees in their country and on their borders.
Belgium might feel this conflict particularly keenly given its own history in WWI and WWII: a neutral country minding its own business attacked by an unhinged, more powerful neighbour to its east. So maybe it’s more of a visceral reaction than calculated virtue signaling.
I expect the British royals will show up at locations housing refugees, offer their usual “smiles and handshakes” and get their photo ops so they can tick it off their royal duties list.
Glad to see everyone else’s actions make it clear how little “service” they actually provide besides showing up for a photo op.
Remember, BB *did* say (on record) “all we can offer is a smile”….
Personally, I’d rather see Ukrainian refugees be housed in those swanking London homes bought up (and rarely used) by Russian oligarchs. The Tories should seize them and house refugees in them.
I agree. I was saying that the other day to my hubby. Properties and those hotel size yachts that are being seized.
So brownies aren’t enough?
Yesterday’s Fail on Sunday editorial called on RF to take in Ukrainian refugees but concluded that”it is not for us to presume to advise TQ or her family on how to behave or what to do with their homes. WTF?! They have spent 6 years dictating every aspect of Meghan’s life but won’t intrude on the rest of RF?!!
The Windsors are too stupid/selfish to think of something like this! Can you imagine the positive PR that would come from having a few families living in properties such as Frogmore House, that other castle Will and Kate were looking at, their palaces in Scotland and Wales/other places?
Just to clarify – in Poland there are no refugee camps in tents. These people don’t stop right after crossing the border. Most of them are quickly transported to their families in Poland or in other european countries, hosted by Polish people in their homes or hotels and hostels that were offered by their owners. As the last resort, they are hosted in designated by municipalities places such as sports halls or neighborhood clubs (this is the case in my city – I have a small refugee group hosted by city hall 200m from my home in a local neighborhood club)
Bravo to Belgium!
“Available?” As of the BRF can’t skip a seasonal move/vacation in the interest of providing a safe place to stay for people who’s homes were likely blown to bits? Refugees are not refugees by choice – they don’t want to be displaced from their homes. The BRF could make space available, provide meals and access to schooling or medical care free of charge, and the entire expense would probably not exceed what they spend annually on clothes. What are they scared of? Their own cousins have had to (or died trying) to flee countries in the past. People with a lot less are giving a lot more. Monetary donations only trickle down so far and there is a lot of opportunity for disruption transporting resources. Unfortunately my rant is pointless – I know the answer as to why the BRF can’t go out of their way to support the refugees from Putin’s war.
The US is not welcoming any refugees at this moment.
The US/Mexican border have allowed some Ukrainian refugees into the country at that crossing. There are quite a few waiting to cross and Mexican’s at the border are very upset that Ukrainian refugees are being allowed to cross and they are waiting. There’s also quite a few Russian’s at that same border. The Russian’s say they can’t return because Putin would have them jailed if they were to go back. On top of that the US is still trying to get the thousands of Afghan refugees resettled. Russian’s at the border aren’t happy that Ukrainian refugees are being given priority. I understand the situation of the Russian’s that left Russia But I Do believe they should wait. The Ukraine is being destroyed by Russia and the people have no home to go to where as the Russian’s are leaving bcuz they are trying to get away from their dictator.
