This year’s Independence Day was marred by a mass shooting and an ongoing catastrophic situation for women’s rights. It definitely did not feel like a moment to celebrate, and many women opted out completely. I wanted to talk about Zooey Deschanel in particular. I think Zooey’s celebrity image is that of a girlish woman, someone twee and unserious, but Zooey has real depth. She’s been a longtime supporter of women’s rights and women’s reproductive rights, and she posted this to her social media:
For when you want to wish America a happy birthday, but also want her to do better ^
To quote RBG, “The decision whether or not to bear a child is central to a woman’s life, to her well-being and dignity. It is a decision she must make for herself. When Government controls that decision for her, she is being treated as less than a fully adult human responsible for her own choices.”
Let this be a hopeful reminder that together, we have the power to reclaim our right to choose.
Organizations to follow, share resources from, & donate to (if you are able):
@abortioncarenetwork
@abortionfunds
@guttmacherinstitute
@keepourclinics
@latinainstitute
@noisefornow (you can get the tee I’m wearing from them too!)
@ppact
@reprorights
@roefund
@sistersong_woc
Her Noise For Now “Pro Roe 1973” t-shirt is amazing. I looked it up immediately and it’s back-ordered for weeks. The blue and the white versions are backordered, as is most of Noise For Now’s merchandise. Still, I’ll going to buy one, backorders be damned. The proceeds go to Planned Parenthood and other abortion-network charities.
Jessica Chastain also had something to say for the Fourth of July.
Happy “Independence” Day from me and my reproductive rights. pic.twitter.com/GoIuu4JhAq

I am right there with you.
I donated to a cause working to help people with uteruses in certain states to find help with abortions in other states.
I also want to say that I don’t want to walk away from America even though I’m concerned about my rights. I think of the quote about the arc of the moral universe from MLK. It only bends toward justice due to the work on the ground.
Thank you Zooey! Thank you Jessica!
