Scientologists threatened with a beat down from Tom Cruise

wenn5364275
Tom Cruise’s former Scientology auditor, Mark Rathbun, has a blog where he details his experiences in the cult. In August, Rathburn explained that in 2001 he was “personally assigned [by leader Miscavige] as Inspector General RTC – the second highest ecclessiastical position in the religion – to coordinate Tom’s divorce from Nicole and to serve as his auditor.” Rathbun also gave a scathing account of abuse meted out on high-ranking Scientology officials from leader David Miscavige, who regularly beat staff with witnesses present as a means of intimidation and control. Rathbun’s account of a closed, abusive system in which members feared for their safety is consistent with other Scientology defectors, including Jason Beghe and Marc Headley, the author of a new book about Scientology. Other former Scientologists were also willing to come forward and were quoted on the record in a series of exposes on the cult, published this summer in the St. Petersburg Times.

Now Rathbun is saying that Scientology head David Miscavige once threatened top officials with a beating by Tom Cruise if they didn’t obey his orders – and beat up their own underlings. It all sounds so barbaric and like something you would imagine mobsters doing, not an organization that calls themselves a church and tries to tout their “human rights” record:

Did Tom Cruise offer to personally “beat the living [bleep]” out of disobedient Scientologists?

Cruise’s lawyer and church spokesmen vigorously dispute the claim, but a former high-ranking Scientologist official says he “documented” that church leader David Miscavige once asserted that Cruise would lend his “Top Gun” muscle to do just that.

Marty Rathbun, once one of Miscavige’s most trusted lieutenants, tells us he has a witness who can corroborate his account of a bloody beating at the church’s 500-acre compound in Hemet, Calif. Furthermore, he’s brought it to the attention of Cruise’s attorney, Bert Fields.

On the day before the actor’s visit a couple of years ago, the compound’s managers took part in “the Tom Cruise arrival preparation drill,” which required “orchestrating every action they perform … in the presence of Cruise,” Rathbun recently wrote Fields.

But Miscavige wasn’t happy when he addressed 80 to 100 managers at a prisonlike facility, known as “The Hole,” where three insubordinate
officials — Marc Yager, Guillaume Leserve and Ray Mithoff — were “incarcerated,” according to Rathbun.

“Miscavige berated [the managers] for being far too light in their demands for confessions” from the three, Rathbun alleges in his letter, “because they refused to beat [them] … to pulps. Miscavige said that Tom … had vowed to come to the Hole and personally ‘beat the living [bleep]’ out of Yager, Leserve and Mithoff if the managers failed to do so themselves.

“In response, the mob rushed at the three targeted gentlemen,” Rathbun claimed. “Fists flew and feet kicked into the three. They continued to pound until … each had two black eyes.”

Church spokesman Tommy Davis tells us that Yager, Leserve and Mithoff have all provided sworn affidavits stating they were not assaulted, and that numerous witnesses have also testified that Miscavige never invoked Cruise’s name.

Davis calls Rathbun “an admitted liar” and says he was fired because, on numerous occasions, he assaulted fellow church members. Rathbun argues that, at the time, he was following orders, adding: “I’ve confessed my sins.” Rathbun says he relayed the alleged beating incident to Fields, in the hope that Cruise would recognize the church’s “human rights abuses.”

[From The NY Daily News]

I believe that this happened and that Cruise either said he would help give a beat-down, or that Miscavige just claimed he did. Cruise is high up in Scientology, and it’s likely he’s on board with this culture of fear and abuse that Miscavige helped create. It’s worth noting that Rathbun is not claiming in this account that Cruise beat up anyone, just that it was threatened. In the past, Rathburn wrote that he’d worked with people abused by Cruise, but he didn’t say what kind of abuse that entailed. “I have also counseled people who were abused by Tom personally – in matters that eerily resemble the behavior of Miscavige.”

It’s been a hard few weeks for the Scientology cult. Director Paul Haggis resigned as a member in October with a letter to the head of Celebrity Scientology Centew citing the articles in the St. Petersburg Times and speaking out against the Church’s stance on Prop 8. They were also recently convicted of fraud in France and fined $900,000.

  1. Scientology is obviously not a religion – sounds more and more like organized crime. The gov’t should at least revoke their tax-exempt status. I really don’t get why anyone would join this so-called religion.

  2. Firestarter says:

The only thing that Cruise could beat teh hell out of is a Smurf, or someone’s knees.

    Small men always talk tough.

  3. Praise St. Angie! says:

    maybe he beats, Katie too.

would explain why she’s often so covered up while her daughter and Cruise aren’t.

  4. Lee says:

And that would explain those sores and dark circles Katie was sporting a while back. She always strikes me as a caged, beaten down (at least psychologically) child. She doesn’t come across at all as a grown woman in an equal relationship. I feel nothing but pity for her. I’ll bet Tom’s shopping list for a new wife included such necessary traits as a malleable, insecure, immature nature. Hence the young, star-struck Katie. Sad and scary.

  5. gg says:

Millions will breathe a giant sigh of relief when this Cult goes down.

  6. Giz says:

I checked into Scientology some years back, but found it wasn’t for me. However, It is not for for me to judge anyones religious choices. However, there are other so-called denominations brow-beating,brain-washing, making demands of money and/or mentally abusing their members as well without fingering just one specific church or denomination.

As far as I’m concerned all mega “churches” should have their tax status’s revoked. …And BTW, I do consider myself a Christian.

  7. Popcorny says:

    He’s an extremely sickening creep.
He’s so far gone in the head and it has everything to do with the fact that he was a (is) vacant and insecure turd (with a passive-aggressive napoleonic complex) that mixed with a cult like scientology, it filled up those vacant areas (regardless of ridiculous, unstable and dangerous content) and gave him a (false) sense of self.
Does he abuse Holmes? -most assuredly, both physically and mentally.

  8. teehee says:

If I had a daughter as beautiful and precious as Suri, I’d be DAMNED if anyone came near me with such a whack cult let alone would I allow her to be exposed/subjected to it and possibly be beaten as a result.
HELLO!! I’d love my daughter too much.

  9. Daisy says:

I call it ‘short man syndrome’ and I have never thought about it before but I bet he does beat katie! It does explain so much, also I have read about scientology and they seem just like the type who would think it was fine to beat theyre wives.Obviously anyone ealse, too.

  10. Green Is Good says:

David Miscarriage (typo, keeping it) your house of cards is falling down. Your cult’s tax-exempt status will be revoked. Which books you gonna show the IRS? The doctored ones?

  11. Mairead says:

Lads – lay off the accusations of wife-beating. All you have are baseless assumptions of what is a crime, and you lot agreeing with each other does not make it a fact. And it’s an accusation that that could potentially cause great trouble for this site. Cop on please. Or at least throw an “allegedly” in there somewhere!

Some part of this story don’t ring true for me. Although Tom Cruise has stated that he, quote, “will not hestiate to put ethics on someone” – I can’t see him being indiscreet enough to state that he would physically beat someone. I do believe that he can be very intimidating (look for clips of him being squirted at a film premiere in London for a programme, he grabbed the person by the arm and spoke to them like they were petulant children), but I do think threats of physical violence would be far too overt.

It does seem to me that both Miscavage and Rathburn have quite creepy obsessions with Tom, so yes I could see there being special “Cruise prepations” going on. And the Sea Org does appear to be run as a private militia – anything could be happening behind closed compound gates.

  12. Dianne says:

Actually, it sounds a lot like how islam got started and still is today.

  13. Karen says:

@Green Is Good – LMAO!!! You must also be a fan of Michael K at Dlisted. I rather enjoy making typos just to give me an excuse to use that line.

To borrow from Whitney Houston: Scientology is WHACK…literally 🙁

  14. Daisy says:

Allegedly.I totally think he could ‘allegedly’ maybe be violent towards katie.Um and I think this article is full of accusations toward Tom being violent.I dont think this sight will be getting in trouble for our “comments”I have read much much worse.

  15. filthycute says:

    How so, Dianne?

  16. Rosalee says:

Ahhhhh, no Dianne it is not. Scientology is vastly different from Islam. Unless spaceships and aliens have a staring role in the Koran I don’t think the two are remotely related –

  17. Kris says:

Having a real problem with all the info that has been reported lately.. While I believe most of what is being written, why is it that the whistle-blowers are running to local news papers and not the FBI? I am having a hard time with all of it. Bring the infomation to the govt. agencies that can do something about it!

  18. lolo says:

I’m sure they burst out laughing to hear they would get “beaten up” by Cruise. First, you’d have to get a ladder for Teeny Tom, then a slew of bodyguards to hold the person down, and then Tommie could take a baby swing. And, then, you’d have a slap, at best.

  19. lucy2 says:

Even if other organizations or religions do this sort of thing, doesn’t make this right or excuse their actions. It all sounds criminal to me, and I hope that if even a fraction of this stuff is true, things start to change.
As for Tom, I do think he has short man’s syndrome, and he seems to have a lot of anger, insecurity, and control issues- never a good combination. He seems like the type to snap easily. I don’t imagine it’s a terribly happy or equal marriage at all – the extent of that we’ll never know, but I’d be very surprised if they were both truly happy and in love.

  20. Bros says:

yah dianne, how is scientology like the world’s largest religion?

  21. gg says:

@ Giz: WHICH ONES ARE YOU REFERENCING that force people to cough up money, etc. to stay in their church?

I’ll answer that for ya – there are no other actual churches that force people to do things like mortage all their property and put themselves in great debt to be able to worship. Also, what do the $cifitologists worship? Money?

  22. Judy says:

Napoleonic complex is spot on. Long ago, I worked for a young, shrimp of an attorney with that problem who had the balls to tell me what I could or could not do on my time off. He had the nerve to tell me to quit playing bridge with my girlfriends because I was staying up too late. Good thing I’m not dealing with him at this point in my life, because I would cut his balls off.

  23. KateNonymous says:

Sounds like being jumped into an L.A. street gang.

  24. Blitz says:

@Kris Lawyer Graham Berry who has fought some bitter battles against the Co$, and was smeared and driven into bankruptcy himself, brought 2 boxes of evidence against them to the FBI, and was told that there wasn’t enough money in the US govt to fight the Co$. They will litigate into bankruptcy, filing masses of lawsuits, that’s their aim. Then they’ll smear and intimidate lawyers, clerks, anyone who stands in the way. They are major racketeers, plain and simple. Their mission is to cripple and intimidate their opponents.

@lolo laughter would seem appropriate but in fact members are forced to call Tom, “Sir” or “Mr Cruise”, even those who have/had achieved higher OT levels in the “church.” It’s crazy.

  25. TwinkleToes says:

Tom Cruise, it is over. Finito. Nicole kidman must have some good dirt on him but it would expose her role as a beard who sold her soul to become a star. It would also expose the fact that they adopted those kids for a facade and all hell would break loose.

  26. Jeri says:

I can’t see why any SANE person would join this CULT. They take your money & your freedom & threaten you if you don’t joyfully obey all their LAWS. I guess it’s like getting sucked onto a bad relationship, all seductive sweetness & romance in the beginning which then morphs into bloody beatings before you realize what happened.

  27. Catherine says:

Tell me why anyone would WANT to join scientology?? Sounds like a freaking nightmare.

  28. Diablo says:

$cientology only has about 25,000 members. Their numbers are inflated because they claim ANYONE who has ever bought a copy of Dianetics or come into one of their centers or took a course as a member…that’s how they claim ‘millions’ of members.

It’s all a sham, and Tom Cruise is GAY!!!

  29. Anastasia says:

A beat-down? From Tom Cruise? Which would involve him shrieking hysterically and sobbing while he randomly runs at you flapping his hands about? And if his hand happens to land on you, he skids backward quickly, shrieking some more just in case you retaliate?

    Well, color me scareded. LOL.

  30. ha says:

    Tom is a mobster? haha!

  31. ha says:

Toms oldest daughter looks exactly like David Miscavige

  32. Westender says:

Just a matter of time until some real dirt on Tom Cruise comes to light. Wonder what would happen if the diaries that Nicole Kidman kept during their marriage and she said had burned when she remarried, suddenly “re-appeared”? Tom and Nicole must have some explosive info on each other

  33. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I’m going to have to agree with Mairead on this one. Spousal abuse is a hell of an accusation to make without incontrovertible evidence. With all of abuses going on in the cult, it’s hard to know whatever happened or if there’s any heft to what these people say. Since their members are beaten and socially destroyed for ‘transgressing’ how do you suss out the truth?

And Elisabeth Moss in league with them, too? Peggy Olson, what the heck? Does Ferecito know about this?

  34. Giz says:

    gi or whoever you are:
@ Giz: WHICH ONES ARE YOU REFERENCING that force people to cough up money, etc. to stay in their church?

First off, I didn’t accuse the CS of either, I don’t know that they do. My differences with the CS were idealogy,

Secondly, far as other churches are concerned, believe what you want, I know otherwise, I’m not accusing all churches of being abusive. However, are some that abuse and bully their members, whether you want to believe it or not, I have seen it first hand.

Supposedly, all religions pretty much have the same core beliefs on how we are to treat each other and live, but we seem to manage to do otherwise. We’re too busy being be “superior” to recognize that fact!

  35. You Go Girl says:

These people are nuts, shut them down!
Together with the lunatics, devil worshippers that run them.
If you need Scientology, you have no life and no direction.

  36. gg says:

@ Giz – A little behind are we? Somebody needs to do a little research before they post.

    http://www.zenu.net

I DO know that they do that! They absolutely DO force money to stay in the organization. I know somebody who is in the CoS and I know what they have done and that it’s their common practice. It’s what they do best, besides BRAINWASHING and KILLING PEOPLE. Google!

They have no deity or entity they worship, therefore, not a church except by their own assertions to gain tax exemption. Come on, don’t you know all this already?

You said: “… However, there are other so-called denominations brow-beating,brain-washing, making demands of money and/or mentally abusing their members as well without fingering just one specific church or denomination. ”

You brought up money (your quote above). Again, I ask, WHICH ONES? Judeo-Christianity doesn’t force anyone to pay for services, and neither does Buddhism or Islam.

  37. la chica says:

there are a lot of ways of abusing someone. exercising emotional control over your spouse is a form of abuse. isolating your spouse and child from contact with extended family is a form of emotional abuse. curtailing your spouse’s personal freedom of choice is a form of abuse. i could go on.

that said, no where did it say that Tom Cruise hit anyone in the cult but that the folks being punished were threatened with his personal beatdown, which they avoided.

Tom Cruise has for along time been elevated to almost Godlike status in this cult. it’s nice to see him finally humbled. after all, he is merely human like the rest of us and not deserving of any kind of worship.

  38. Trashaddict says:

You mean, nobody misbehaved just so they could get a whipping from Tom? There has to be somebody in that crew who was secretly hoping….

Second, tall people are just as capable of behaving like assholes as short people. So don’t ascribe it to being vertically challenged. I am vertically challenged too and I would never behave that way.

  39. MR says:

Do they recruit only rich people to become scientologists? Do they recruit poor/homeless people also? They definitely don’t go to third-world countries.

  40. Giz says:

GG6, So CS promotes and commit murder, where is that written down and proven as fact? I’m not going to go that road! This discussion is pointless.

I have to wonder that if Cruise were a practicing Muslim would he then be accused of being a potential terrorist? The hatred of him seems almost profound enough to suggest it!

I’m not defending Cruise or CS. I’m questioning the rationale behind some of the statements that were made just as you are questioning my statements regarding certain churches within the Christian communities that promote fear and intimidation. Just because brow-beating, intimidation along with mental and some times physical abuse isn’t written a particular churches doctrine doesn’t mean it isn’t practiced!

You’ve got people out there within certain Christian communities in favor of capitol punishment, collateral damage in the Mid-East and the outright murder of certain individuals in the name of God. …So now YOU tell me about the supposed murders that CS has committed!

ALL religions practice some form of brainwashing, be it good or bad. It just depends on how far its membership is going to go! You need to go do some research!

  41. stacy says:

UMMM, GIZ- do NOT generalize religions as brainwashing communities. I grew up in a Baptist church, graduated from a Baptist school, still attend church once in a while, but I, and the members of my church/ family are the furthest thing from being brainwashed. As a matter of fact, I am one of the most openminded people I know. And you still never answered the question- which religions are you talking about?

  42. Daisy says:

You should read up on scientology.Granted the stuff you read is not confirmed proof, but not much is,and if it were confirmed they would all have big legal trouble.Their are alot of witnesses and reformed CS members that say that there is physical abuse, and yes, even murder and much more.It is a dangerous cult.

  43. Divorcee says:

Maybe once Scientology is over and done with maybe Tom can help his best friend David become and actor since the guy dyes his hair alot lol, I remember reading the first original article where several ex memebers came forward about their old crazy leader and seen the pictures where his hair color change 3 or 4 different times, I’m terrible with colors you know so I don’t want to mislead anyone with the wrong colors, but I can so see Tom trying to threaten people. Scientology is going down. Long live Christianity!

  44. Douglas says:

there is ten commandments but noone cares.so what all the dumb people think thier god is better.i don’t care whos god is better just like i don’t care who has all the money. anyone who puts money and religion before family and love is just dumb give me a break tom thnik his god is better then the god someone else has. who care jsut stop pushing it off on everyone else and keep it to yourself.
