Ashlee Simpson is marching forward with her career after getting fired from Melrose Place for her bad acting. Actually, you could also say she’s taking a big step backwards. Not because her upcoming plans are a step down. But because she’s returning to her old role in the musical “Chicago.” Simpson played Roxie Hart in the London stage version, and now she’s taking it to Broadway.
Where does a crazy Melrose Place character go after she dies? Apparently, the Windy City by way of the Great White Way.
According to reports, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, 25, isn’t taking a break after getting axed from the prime-time soap. Instead, she’s set to play Roxie Hart in the Broadway production of Chicago, starting in December for six weeks, Gossip Cop reports.
It’s not an unfamiliar role. Simpson-Wentz played the role in the London run of the musical. It would, however, be her Broadway debut.
[From People]
“Chicago” was really good to Ashlee. She’d previously had a bit of acting under her belt (“Malcolm in the Middle,” and her own “reality” show) and had that infamous SNL lip-syncing debacle. She got decent reviews for “Chicago,” and it was right around that time that she got her nose job and was starting to be referred to as “hot” instead of “Jessica Simpson’s ugly duckling sister.” Not that she ever was an ugly duckling, but she was never competition until right around that time. She started becoming more of a gossip fixture, and now she gets almost as much coverage as Jessica.
Frankly, it sounds like a smart move. Broadway demands a different type of acting from something like “Melrose Place.” Certainly not worse acting, so it’s not like Ashlee found the perfect solution. But you can be a bit hammier and it can still work. I tend to think Ashlee couldn’t do the Melrose style, but that doesn’t mean she’s lost as an actress altogether. I think something that’s literally more theatric could work. And she’ll have a change of scenery and all that, which’ll be nice. Hey, maybe Pete Wentz will even have to babysit and stay in some nights while Ashley goes out. Naw. Though People didn’t mention it, something tells me Pete won’t be joining Ashley in NYC. I’m sure the divorce rumors will start by tomorrow afternoon.
Here’s Ashley (with big sis Jessica) at her West End debut in “Chicago” on September 25th, 2006. Images thanks to WENN.com .
I hope that top picture was Photoshopped, because just seeing the words, “America’s Sweetheart” over her bland face is giving me dry heaves.
re: the pix of her and her sis — damn, what a difference 3 yrs makes.
It wasn’t, @snowball. That title cue is supposed to be mocking and ironic.
She.cant.sing.
Why do the Chicago Musical producers always hire random D-listed celebrities to star in their shows, for crying out loud even Kelly Osbourne had a go. It is a good musical but they have ruined it with talentless nobodies.
Broadway-Lite.
Gotta tell you, I am NOT an Ashlee fan, but I saw her in the London show and she really was surprisingly good. I hope she does as well in New York, because she seriously isn’t cutting in on TV. And her CD’s suck.
WHHHYYYYYY! She can’t sing! She can’t dance! I have more talent in my pinky finger! ARG!
My name! That doesn’t even look like her in the poster.
Was she really all that bad in Melrose? I never watched it, so I have no idea if she was as horrible as people say.
I like how she keep trudging on. It’s like they fired her from a tv show one day and then boom the day she’s in a musical.
No acting, singing or dancing ability of any kind. The show will fold, because nobody is going to buy tickets to see Asslee embarrass herself on stage.
I’m gonna rouge my lips and let the audience down, and all that jazz
Asslee sucked on t.v. and she will suck on Broadway.
I think she looks great in the poster- hope she does well.
That Father/ Manager of hers is a miracle worker! She’s completely talentless, and scored a Broadway gig! Only in America!!!!!
At least she is trying to have a reason for being famous other than having a dumb sister with big boobs that we don’t remember what she is famous anymore and having a creepy dad who knew how to pimp them out the right way.
The poster tag isn’t ironic, it’s for London audiences and that’s how they billed her.
Meh, Roxy in Chicago– every hacktress looking to be “legit” has played that role on Broadway, they’ve been digging the bottom of the barrel for years trying to plug “names” into the show. Same with the role of Billy, many less-than-capable actors have taken on that role in this production.
You gotta hand it to the Simpson sisters, they certainly know how to persevere when everyone is cheering for them to fail. I’m no Ashley fan, but I can respect that she’s getting involved in a project that actually requires alot of effort. I’d much sooner respect her for a Broadway credit than for a prepackaged, crappy pop album.
Enonymous is right. CHICAGO is an amazing show, but the producers have turned it into THE LOVE BOAT of Broadway. Most of the roles aren’t demanding vocally and they modify the Fosse choreography so that anyone can do it.
Triple threats such as Jerry Springer and Melanie Griffith have been through this production so Ashlee will fit right in.
I thought that you had to be able to act and sing to be on Broadway?
@ snowball – It’s not ‘shopped. Ashlee actually has those words suspended over her head at all times. If you zoomed out a little in her pap shots you’d see it.
It is pretty sad, some of the “actors” that are hired on Broadway these days just because they somehow got famous. Especially when there are probably hugely talented people out there who can’t get roles because they’re unknowns.
I would not pay to see Ashlee. I don’t think she can sing or act, and I honestly can’t imagine her in a live performance. No thanks.
I guess anyone can get on Broadway now. Will they let her lipsynch?
