How the YouGov worm turns! For a while now – years – I’ve questioned the methodology and push-polling of YouGov, the British pollster. YouGov tends to race around doing small-sample size polls of old white royalists whenever there’s a big royal story out. YouGov loves loves loves to pretend that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are still somehow trapped within the Windsors’ gilded cage and that their livelihoods depend on their popularity among 80-year-old racists with corgi memorabilia. Interestingly, according to Newsweek, there’s a new YouGov poll which has pretty terrible numbers for King Charles among the younger demographic. YouGov actually polled the youths? *clutches AirPods*
King Charles III’s royal family has sunk to an approval rating of -27 among Gen Z Brits, with 52 percent in favor of abolishing the monarchy.
The royals remain popular in the U.K. when the views of all age groups are taken together, but the monarchy appears to be losing the hearts and minds of Charles’ younger subjects, according to polling by YouGov in the aftermath of Prince Harry’s memoir.
Among 18-24-year-olds, 52 percent wanted to replace Charles with an elected head of state, compared to 34 percent who wanted to keep the king. Of those who expressed an opinion, 68 percent said they felt strongly about the subject.
Just 5 percent felt “very positive” about the royal family in general while 27 percent felt “very negative.” Overall, 58 percent felt either fairly or very negative compared to 31 percent who felt either fairly or very positive, giving the family a net approval rating of -27 among young people.
Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, author of This Is Why I Resist, told Newsweek: “I don’t think this data is surprising. It’s clear that the youth of today have more sense than their forebears. The era of deference to the monarchy ended when Queen Elizabeth died. People and I think the youths can see that the monarchy today is not relatable at all to any area of their lives. They don’t even speak to issues that they are passionate about. Even when they do, like for instance climate change, it’s only done when speaking to high-level countries and high-level politicians. They are not engaging one-on-one with those people they are supposed to be serving. And those members of the royal family who could be remotely relatable to the youth of today are the very members who have been kicked out.”
[From Newsweek]
I love Dr. Shola and I love that she’s always out there, calling out the racists and the colonialists. She’s doing the lord’s work. As for this YouGov poll… pretty brutal, right? As it turns out, some of the polling questions were also about Harry and Meghan, because that’s just what YouGov does, it constantly polls British people about what they think of an American and her husband, both of whom moved away from Salt Island three years ago. In any case, the poll found that British Gen Z doesn’t have a particularly warm opinion about the Sussexes either. Which, again, is fine. Just as long as Gen Z stays small-r republican, it’s like a ticking time bomb set to explode within the next decade.

Surprising since YouGov is basically a conservative and right wing tool. Lmaoo the fact that the tabloids and Carnival Land (rf) actually believe that the U.K. public actually cares about YouGov surveys is so incredibly laughable. Nobody here gives a sh*t because in no way does it ever reflect the thoughts of the majority
If you are on their system as a Tory they will target you for polls that are anti immigrant. Someone put a link on twitter ages ago
“Clutches Air Pods”. Hahahahaahahhahahahaaa ET Too YouGov. My how the tides turn when a Prince is allowed to defend himself.
Dr Shola is the truth, she is Unapologetic. She makes me so happy when she shuts down the racists and Karens.
I saw some street interviews with young people in the aftermath of the queen’s death. Their message was sad, but not sad, because the queen never did anything for them. The BRF are like civil war statutes in the US. They represent an ugly past that younger generations see for what it is.
I loved those interviews because it was clear the interviewer did not know what to do with that response. I remember one person in Windsor who was like, “well its sad bc its sad when almost everyone dies but….no, its not THAT sad” or something and the interviewer was like uhhhhhh right okay……
They really overestimated how much people loved even QEII (especially young people) and I think they’re still scrambling.
Youguv is the daily fail of polls. They have to poke at the Sussexes to keep Camzilla happy.
As everyone has said a million times, could they have a less charismatic out of touch bunch of people “in control” of their government? The Windsors are such idiots. They’re digging their heels into their stupid and outdated ways rather than updating with the times. Charles rehabilitated his (and Camilla’s) image over so many years, but refuses to do it again. It’d be so easy for them to do it…but they won’t…and it’s seems like it’s because they’re outdated, entitled, out of touch and all out racist. Their true colors have been shown. End of story….end of monarchy.
Your first sentence could apply to the actual government at the moment.
Prince Harry has taken the reins of his own life and has told his story in his own words, seriously crippling all the liars, cronies, and RR who have tried (and keep trying) to establish a false narrative about him. They hate him for that. And I love him for that.
Same Beverly absolutely agree 100%
“replace Charles with an elected head of state”. They *have* an elected head of state. They need to change the laws that give the royal family governmental authority.
Yep, no need to replace, we’ll be just fine without thank you. Retire the lot of them then send in the auditors to determine what they as individuals can keep and what is wholly owned and controlled by the nation. Starting with the gold piano and working up to the all the land and resources.
No, we have an elected head of government in Rishi Sunak. Charles is the head of state, and no one elected him. Most countries have a separate head of state and head of government (like Ireland and Germany), the US is relatively unusual in having the President be both. I’m very much in favour of an elected head of state, and my vote would be for David Attenborough.
The Commonwealth countries have a representative of the Queen/King acting as head of state, although the Q/K is the actual head. In Canada it’s the Govenor General, and probably the same for the others. Our head of government is the prime minitster.
Attenborough who would like to control the population and thinks it’s “barmy” to send food to countries experiencing famine? He, like his buddy PW, wants fewer Africans. The one who downplayed climate change because it didn’t make for good television?
@Equality, in my ideal world you are free to vote for whoever you want as Head of state. Mary Berry, Emma Thompson, Richard Ayoade, even former politicians. That’s the beauty of democracy.
Yes, it is. If you want to vote for somebody unqualified, monarchy-adjacent and a faux-environmentalist racist in search of an ideal world, that’s your option.
Of those adjectives, I’ll accept “monarchy-adjacent.” The rest are rubbish, and mostly libellous.
And genuinely, when you are 94, I hope the future generations of the world are kinder to you and your work than you have been to him and his work.
@equality. Fewer people in general, in every continent, is absolutely critical to the survival of life on this planet. The economic impacts will just have to be worked out. Humans are like a plague of locusts. However, if he objects to sending food to Africa, I agree that is appalling.
The kids are alright.
I also recently read that for the first time people are not becoming more conservative as they grow older, the commentary was along the lines of millennials having lived through one crisis after another, less chance of home ownership, etc. and this is filtering through to their politics as they age and in previous generations would have swung more to the right.
Yep–this is where the right-wingers (in Britain and America) really are shooting themselves in the foot. If you keep cutting off rungs of the ladder and shred the safety net, there is no amount of Trumpian crap or Tory rhetoric that will cover for people losing generations of opportunities and rights. And instead of buying into that garbage, millennials are seeing through it because they are being pressed to the wall by right-wing greed. As well, the right-wing hasn’t managed to rig the system enough (yet) so they can shut out opposing voices. Result–a lot of voters who don’t see what voting conservative will do for them.
Every person who works to support themselves hates The Monarchy, IMO. Or should.
They really fumbled the bag. I’ve never seen anything like it. Instead of jealousy and hierarchy, they’ve could’ve worked together to enter into a new era. They all know what they have left is not enough. They need to address a lot of things from the past and present and they need to tell their media hounds to back off because these experts and commentators are making things worse for them.
Astonishingly thick-headed, selfish and short-sighted, like all billionaires today.
I think one of the mistakes royalists consistently make is assuming that people who aren’t fans of H&M are automatically royalists. Some people may not like H&M for a variety of reasons AND they may also hate the monarchy. I think RRs and the Windsors and royalists assume that by kicking up hate towards H&M, they are creating love for the Windsors, and that’s just not how it works sometimes.
Obviously H&M have a huge fan base and even if people aren’t “fans” they’re buying their books, watching their shows and interviews, etc, so I am just speaking to the poll results here.
It seems royalists have been so focused on the YouGov numbers that put the Sussexes in a bad light (skewed polls or no) that they have forgotten that a bad light for the Sussexes doesn’t necessarily shine a good light on the rest of the Windsors, you know?
And at the end of the day, these types of poll results should be more worrisome for the Windsors than the Sussexes, since the Windsors need the public’s approval and support.
What can the Windsors do to counteract this? The things they will refuse to do. Discuss social issues besides just saying “racism needs to end, I’m fed up with it.” Engage with young people besides sending Kate out to a nursery school. Show that you are understand the current economic crisis by scaling back your coronation, scaling back on your wearing of bespoke designer clothes and stolen jewels, etc. Show that you are willing to adapt by maybe only having TWO estates – one in the country and one in London – rather than multiple ones scattered all over.
And so on. Will doing that save the monarchy? Doubtful. But those kinds of things would show that someone, somewhere, is at least going to do the bare minimum.
Instead they moved W&K into a fourth house and Charles is alternating between his massive property portfolio and insisting that the British public “wants” a large fancy coronation.
True. They could also create foundational enterprises that actually provide funding to worthy groups and causes.
It’s not just the youths.
My daughter took a statistics class and did a project in polling. Outcomes are easy to manipulate depending on so many factors.
No YouGov poll will ever find a positive view of the Sussexes and they will select the respondents and questions to ensure that result. Isn’t there a big scandal going on right now about the leader of the Tory party failing to pay millions in taxes on his offshore investment in YouGov? Isn’t Camilla’s nephew a director for YouGov?
Yeah, I’ve got a yougov account and rarely get surveys about this topic, probably because I answered negatively towards the british unroyal family and positively towards H&M. yougov was owned by a tory mp but he sold it or something like that. His taxes are shady as hell.
Chuck acts like he’s got a big chip on his shoulder. Mummy ignored him when he was little – how many weeks/months was Liz’s big tour of the Commonwealth when he & Anne were very little? Daddy always belittled him as not “manly” enough as a kid. Chuck adored Mountbatten, who told him to pick an obedient & subservient wife because kings always had mistresses for the fun part.
Other than demonstrating how to wallow in entitlement, Chuck wasn’t an effective parent. He spent most of his energy trying to win out over Andy in the contest for mommy’s affection & bolstering Willy’s ego to spare Willy the “you’re not good enough” pain. Chuck overdid that, all the while getting his ego stroked by Cam. Willy thinks he pees perfume & doesn’t have to do anything special to deserve the adulation his (nearly-incestuous) bloodline gives him.
I’m sure the family is hoping to pull in “the youths” once George and Charlotte and Louis get a little older and can be pap’d being young, pretty and well-dressed and everyone can speculate about who they are dating off at prep school or whatever *eyeroll*
My first thought is that someone is going to trying to get KFC to retire so that Fails can be King. I want to see the questions and how they were worded. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the bm want Fails to be King now. They probably have so much on him that he’ll do whatever they want him to. The Tories would probably work with the bm for this purpose. The Sussexes are no longer part of the Monarchy, so I would anticipate that their numbers would be low.
Polls are not going to help them. I think they believe that the populace will believe whatever a poll says. Very little minds are putting this info out there. They refuse to see that the Monarchy needs to be made relevant NOW. That’s not going to happen, because the occupants of the palace haven’t a clue what that means or how to do it. I doubt they would do it if they did know.
I’d keep looking over my shoulder if I was Chuck. All I have to say about the Escort is that I have no doubt she’ll be out on her but when Chuck goes.
This is not entirely new. The polls just before the Queen’ s funeral was inflated from 37 to 60% in favour of the monarchy.
The size of the sample, exact questions asked, specific geographical areas, and who commissioned the polls are unavailable for proper analysis.
Why the poll was done?
To divert attention from the ruling party of the government?
Are the Tories planning to sacrifice the PM and Head of State to hold on to power? In the PM’ s case, he has met the demands of the corporate fascists while ignoring ordinary Britons.
This poll can also be used to excuse their actions that are responsible for the remaining Caribbean Commonwealth nations removing Tory government oversight in regards to the Privy Court (St Lucia) or ditching the monarchial Head of State for a President?
What about the ever present ghost of Brexit?
Johnson’s lies to small business owners?
Costs for removing EP to the tune of £82B?
It can be regarded as preparation for revolt via the ballot box although this is the age of mis and disinformation.
Manufactured consent, like all human inventions have worked, until it can no longer do so.
This is about dwindling media support and sales.
It is about the expansion of the appetite for factual reporting to make informed decisions.
A rebirth of the concept of We, the people from the youths?
Look at the sales of Spare in the UK, in spite of leaks Hard Copy and audible rose to 870,000 in one day.
Depending on the deal, one source estimate that PH can net $65+M.
This poll can be used to avoid accountability by pointing the finger and introduce the new mascot/scapegoat- The Monarchy under the reign of King Charles 111.
Brava, Kaiser! This is one of your best sentences yet: ‘YouGov loves loves loves to pretend that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are still somehow trapped within the Windsors’ gilded cage and that their livelihoods depend on their popularity among 80-year-old racists with corgi memorabilia.’
And this was a mighty follow-up: ‘YouGov actually polled the youths? *clutches AirPods*’
