Gigi Hadid is promoting Netflix’s Next in Fashion, where she acts as host/mentor. Project Runway really changed the reality-competition game and it ended up changing the fashion industry too. Anyway, Gigi took the NIF gig because she wanted a more settled life, especially now that she’s a mom to two-year-old Khai. Gigi spoke about all that and more (including nepotism) with the Times of London. Some highlights:
She longs for a regular 9-5 job: “I’m craving the office job!” Modelling, she explains, involves showing up to “a new job every day with a completely different set of people… I think it’s unrealistic to see modelling as my lifestyle for ever.”
On her daughter: “She has already given me so much. I always wanted to be a mum, but I was never obsessive about it or [thought that] I was put on this Earth to be a mum. I’ve always been quite organised, so having Khai at the time that I did was a blessing. I’m so glad to be a young mum.”
On her former partner Zayn Malik: While Gigi doesn’t explicitly mention Zayn’s name during our conversation, she alludes to him in a loving tone that implies a genuine lack of acrimony. “Just keeping the importance of the child’s happiness at the forefront,” she replies when I ask what her advice would be to those navigating co-parenting arrangements. “You have a long life alongside this person.” Gigi attempts to schedule work commitments “when Khai is with her dad. That she can be with both parents makes me very happy.”
Khai has British tastes: “She’s clearly a child who was grown in my stomach eating a lot of British food — breakfast, beans, curries. And she still eats like that. She even says some words with a little [English] accent, which I love.”
Nepo baby: “Technically I’m a nepotism baby. My parents came from very little [but] I’ve always acknowledged that I come from privilege. My parents told me, ‘Just because you have parents who were successful, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t walk into the job being as nice and as hard-working as you can be.’ ”
On her looks: “I don’t think I’m the prettiest person in the world. Some Botox could probably help but I’m not so obsessed with caring that I want to do anything about it.”
When she called Kanye a ‘bully and a joke’ when he mocked fashion editor Gabriella Karefa-Johnson: “[Gabriella] is a really important person for people to see in fashion. There are millions of kids who will benefit from knowing that Gabriella is a celebrated and deserving person in this industry. I found [West’s comment] not only malicious but also dangerous.”
On the rumors she was dating Leo DiCaprio: “I don’t know how anyone expects anybody they see in the public eye to have any sort of normal dating experience if you tie people [to one another] so quickly. It’s a bummer. I just stopped reading it.”
Guess my least favorite part. It’s this: “Some Botox could probably help but I’m not so obsessed with caring that I want to do anything about it.” There are like twenty things wrong with that statement! One, she’s only 27 years old! Why the f–k would she need Botox? Two, you don’t have to be “obsessed with caring” – oh, you know what, I’m not even going to go in on this stuff. It was a stupid comment, hopefully she’ll do better next time. While I understand her comment about wanting to travel less and be in one place, she definitely has a nepo-baby’s understanding of what it’s like to genuinely work for a living, full stop, but especially at a 9-5 job. As for the Leo stuff… lol, Leo’s side was the one blanketing the gossip press to tell them that Leo was breaking his under-25 rule to date an old crone like Gigi! Talk to your showmance partner!

Well, technically no one is the prettiest person in the world because beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My partner says I’m the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen all the time, but objectively speaking, I’m not—it’s just coming from a place of love and personal perception.
That said, I hope the best for Gigi. The abuse stuff with her ex seemed scary and I think now that she’s a mother, her priorities have really shifted. Sounds like she’s looking for an out with modeling and it sort of makes sense, given she’s aging out of some of the bigger contracts (modeling world is still as youth-obsessed as ever). I hope she lands okay and finds happiness and peace.
I mean you also have to take into account she was raised by a mother who was OBSESSED with her daughters’ looks and body. Plus, the model/fashion industry thrives on making people insecure about their age, looks and bodies. She has probably heard countless of times where, what, and which part of her body could use botox/filters/plastic surgery in order to ‘enhance’ her looks. the fact she looks relatively untouched now, is a testament to her. the pressures from within and outside the industry must have been huge/still huge and not to speak of internalising all those toxic notions of beauty/healthy/body standards in her childhood/youth, only to unpack them now, as someone moving past her mid twenties and as a young mother. She really sounds like a relatively normal, grounded person, I mean, if you compare her to a Kendall or Nicola Peltz or something…Also her reputation is really solid, that’s not something you can buy or fake to that extent. I can see how all that moving around/working odd hours/working with jet lag has not only taken a toll on her body, but also, not very practical as a single, co parenting mother. that said her romanticising the 5-9 job is very nepo of hers lol. Also girl, talk to Dicaprio and tell HIM to stop using you as a detour! 😂
All of this. The Botox comment sounded like an attempt at self-deprecation and say what you want, but GiGi DOES have a good reputation. I just don’t have any interest in criticizing her–she seems like a decent person.
I cut Gigi a little slack re: Botox comments. Remember, she has an Almond Mom. Thee Almond Mom, come to think of it.
Absolutely she has thee almond mom! The botox comment sounds like it came straight from Yolonda.
Isn’t her father a plastic surgeon too?
Her dad is a real estate developer I think
I get Botox, but I’m not obsessed. It’s just a nice option. I used to get highlights, also a nice option. Not a big deal, she was trying to be self-effacing.
I really loved her on NIF (which is not my typical show, but I got sucked in and liked it.) She and Tan France were great together and she was so positive and friendly with the designers. It definitely felt like she was truly devastated to have to send ANYONE home, and she found something genuine to compliment in every design (which was hard for some of them!) She also clearly relished being the wacky one to Tan’s “straight man” a lot of the time, which was cute. She seems grounded and grateful, which is pretty astonishing considering she’s the offspring of Thee Original Almond Mom (tm Haylie!)
Also, I loved what she said about Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, and Kanye is a Forever Turd. That’s all I’ve got.
Almond Mom.
I had to do a little Googling to learn what that means.
OMG! What kind of crapola is that?
I just do not understand that behavior at all.
I really like Gigi. She very clearly isn’t a jerk.
She thinks Botox would help? She’s so young still, how is Botox the answer? I personally never found her good-looking at all, she’s not classically beautiful nor does she have that rare quality that someone like Linda Evangelista has. Botox wouldn’t fix anything.
I have to agree. I just don’t believe the Leo/Gigi thing. Interesting enough, after awards season, nothing else about them. I do like Gigi though, I think she’s beautiful but also pretty smart. Both Gigi and Zendaya looked absolutely amazing wearing their saris at the event in India a few weeks ago. And for both of them being Americans representing the US while at the host country, they definitely represented well and respected the host country’s culture. There’s some hope for our z-generation.
