On New Year’s Day, Jeremy Renner was trying to help out a neighbor in his Lake Tahoe neighborhood when he was crushed by a snow plow. Renner broke more than 30 bones in his body and for a while, it felt like his family was trying to prepare everyone for Renner dying from all of the injuries he sustained. He was airlifted to a hospital and doctors saved his life. For the past three months, he’s been recovering, healing and rehabbing his body. He recently sat down for an exclusive interview on ABC/Disney to talk about everything that happened but I couldn’t even watch it (I’m so squeamish about those kinds of body-trauma stories). In any case, Renner walked his first red carpet last night – it was the premiere of his new Disney+ show Rennervations. His daughter Ava was there, as were many of Renner’s friends and family. He spoke exclusively to People at the premiere:
“I’m overflowing with gratitude and excitement unlike [anything] I’ve felt in a very, very long time, you know?” Renner, who was also joined by his family, told PEOPLE while on the red carpet. “Because it’s not a movie that I’m promoting, It’s not a show, it’s my, it’s my life, man, this is what I do. My breath is taken away by how honored I am that we’re even here even talking about it, you know what I mean? We had people calling me crazy a good five years ago, like, ‘What are you gonna do with all these trucks?’ Like, ‘Trust me, I’ve got a good idea,'” Renner said.
“I had a vision, but it took a lot of people to help me with the vision though you know? It seems so easy in my brain. Oh, yeah. Right. Yeah, the idea is easy,” Renner said, while laughing. “The idea is the easy part, Geez Louise.”
He pointed out that the event served as his “first time to kind of get out of my bed and out of rehab and, you know, to be on my feet and be out in the world. It’s intense, you know, for me, it’s a lot, but it’s a step in the direction I want to be going, right? And this is exactly what I want to be doing and exactly where I want my life to be right now.”
Asked how he feels to have his family by his side, Renner told PEOPLE, “I mean, it’s everything. It’s everything. They’re the fuel behind a lot of things that I do, and it’s nice to be able to share this with them and be a part of it.”
He added that little Ava also plays an important role in the show. “My daughter is a big part of the design on some of these, on these buses and these ideas, she’s been a big part of that narrative on the show, but also in the behind the scenes of it all. It’s great to be doing something you love to do with people you love. That, to me, is like what Heaven is. That’s the greatest dessert. That’s the greatest, you know, thing I’ll ever do. Right? Amazing.”
I’m glad he’s up and about, although I can’t even imagine how much he’s pushed himself to recover. If I broke 30 bones? Lord, I would be in bed for a year. I would be afraid to walk or breathe or talk. My guess is that Renner is still on painkillers to deal with what must be a great deal of daily physical pain. He made use of a cane and he seemed to have some kind of roller device on the carpet too. I think he has trouble putting weight on his left leg. Anyway, his recovery is nothing short of miraculous.

This is truly amazing. I also thought he was not going to survive, I’m so glad I was wrong.
Great to see him happy and healing well.
I mean… BRAVO. I’m amazed. I’m assuming he was already in excellent physical health before the accident. All that Marvel training to play Hawkeye must have helped.
And kudos to him for not being afraid to show that he needs assistance with a cane and scooter.
It’s wonderful that his is alive and doing well. But yeah, if I had 30 broken bones only a few months ago, I’d be in bed for a year too.
You might. Then again, after a massive physical event like this you just might want your life back, the life you were living before. I’m thinking of how hard my brother worked after his massive stroke–he wanted out of that hospital, he wanted to be able to go home, go to work, be with his kids, just live the life he was living. And he did that. Back at work in four months. I’m thinking that may have been Renner’s mindset as well.
Not a fan of J Renner following some of his interviews but I have to say that I found him so inspiring and positive on Jimmy Kimmel. His recovery is nothing short of miraculous and I wish him all the best for the rest of his physical therapy.
He should date Drew B. They would be cute together.
They would be adorable.
Amazing recovery! A neighbor-doctor helped until rescue crews arrived, impeded by the heavy snow. The snow under him is probably why he’s alive. That plow weighs over 1400 lbs & they had to drive it off him. He’d been using the plow to get his nephew’s car cleared to leave. After he got out of the cab, it rolled. Hard to believe he’s alive & didn’t lose limbs.
He’s very well-liked by all his neighbors – friendly, down-to-earth, helpful. My brother lives nearby.
PoW ought to watch his recent interviews on what he has been through since this major accident. His first thought was for his nephew witnessing the accident NOT for himself. Maybe she could reflect on what other truly horrific things other people have to go through?
Anyway loved JR’s tribute to his mom soothing him to sleep with Stephen King short stories and Jimmy Kimmel adding that at least she wasn’t reading from Misery! He loves his family and clearly they are central to his recovery and THAT is what a family that nurtures looks like!
I watched the interview. He wasn’t on snow. He was on asphalt. It’s really amazing he’s alive. The only reason is because he was run over by the treads and not crushed under the wheels.
Amazing recovery
So glad that he’s doing better! This seems like a cute idea for a TV show, and how he talks about getting to work with his daughter is really adorable.
He’s using a knee scooter – I had one when I broke my ankle really badly. I couldn’t put weight on it at all for like 3 months, I can’t imagine how he’s doing this after so many horrific injuries.
Holy crap, four months later and he looks like he merely broke leg. I’m amazed that he doesnt even have scarring on his face (maybe makeup or cosmetic work).
They went through his mouth to install the plates in his mandible, cheek and eye socket. Parts of his face are still numb.
Amazing recovery so far! It’s good to see him out and about.
His recovery is so amazing and his family seems so supportive. I’m glad he’s in good spirits. It’s just so unreal.
I genuinely thought he was going to die. He has radiated such good spirits and cheer everytime he’s interacted with the public since his accident….. his hospital video of his sister washing his hair, his kind words to everyone, he looks elated in these pictures here. I’m glad he is still with us.
