Nick Cannon ‘obligated to pay child support regardless of how many children he has’

I guess Selling Sunset is super popular–the seventh season just premiered a couple of days ago on Netflix and over the weekend, people have been talking about the drama. One of Nick Cannon’s partners, Bre Tiesi, stars in the show. She and Nick have son Legendary Love, 11 months, together. In one of the new episodes, Bre says something really weird about the court capping child support based on how many kids someone has. Now her lawyer is fact-checking what Bre said in a statement to People:

Bre Tiesi’s lawyer is speaking out after the Selling Sunset newcomer claimed on the series that Nick Cannon — the father of her 10-month-old son, Legendary Love — doesn’t have to pay child support.

In the seventh episode of the popular Netflix series, costar Amanza Smith asks Tiesi, 32, if it’s true that someone doesn’t have to pay child support after having 10 children. (Cannon, 42, is a dad of 12.)

“That’s true,” Tiesi responds as the pair share cocktails. “The way it works is like, after 10, the court can basically say he can’t afford to pay child support. Or because he is who he is, they could say, ‘We know you can afford X amount for each household.’ ”

But, in a statement shared with PEOPLE, Neama Rahmani, a lawyer who represents Tiesi, says that’s not the case. “Nick, or any father, is obligated to pay child support under California law regardless of the number of children he has,” Rahmani said.

“Courts consider the parents’ income, the cost of child care, and the amount of time the child spends with each parent,” he continued. “Judges do not cap child support after a certain number of kids.”

A representative for Cannon did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

From People

I’ve never seen Selling Sunset but I watched the conversation between Amanza and Bre on Netflix so I could see if there were any smoke-and-mirrors reality TV tricks. (I had to rewind it a few times because the Amanza lady is wearing one of those goofy Kardashianesque outfits where the sleeves become full gloves and it was distracting. I lived in the LA basin for most of my life. I can tell you that wearing an ensemble like that outdoors in LA is a one-way ticket to getting a heat rash.) When the women talk about child support for Bre’s son Legendary, there’s a little bit of slick editing and I get the sense that some context was edited out. That’s just my reality TV spidey sense and I could be wrong. If anyone else has seen the episode, let me know in the comments if you think I’m off base on this–like I said, I’m not super familiar with the show.

Anyway, I’m glad her lawyer is laying out the facts. Nick is not going to get out of his legal obligations so easily, at least not where Bre’s concerned. Something tells me that one of Nick’s lawyers or associates (or Nick himself) fed Bre this line about there being a cap on child support after someone has ten kids. I mean, who else would be motivated to tell her something like that? In the rest of the conversation she makes clear that she doesn’t need Nick financially or for any other reason, at one point saying “a vibrator would be more helpful.” And you know what? Vibrators can’t have kids with a bunch of other ladies, so she’s not wrong! Also, I don’t believe in judging any of these women for having Nick’s babies. I know it’s tempting, but as far as I see it, they are not the root of the problem that Nick has created. Even if she doesn’t need him, I hope Bre and all the mothers of Nick’s children get the support they’re entitled to. From comments he’s made in the past, I’m not sure they are. Maybe they should all lawyer up like Bre apparently has.

I 100% agree Carina. And also, child support is not for the mother, it is for the child. Even if she doesn’t need help, he should be putting money in accounts for these kids’ education etc.. her financial stability does not negate HIS obligations. The law doesn’t work like that.

    • SophieJara says:

YES. My mom didn’t sue my dad for support because I was an accident and he didn’t want me. She felt like since it was her choice she shouldn’t ask. But currently everyone, including my dad and my stepmom, wishes she had, because of all the emotional fallout that decision created. (which yes, also, they could have chosen to support me, but they didn’t.)

      • Whyforthelovel says:

Absolutely! You were entitled to be supported by both parents. And I can’t even imagine unpacking all of that later in life!

It can be a difficult endeavor for a single mom to take care of a baby, herself, lawyer up, go to the courts, deal with judges, lawyers, etc questioning her & battle a man who did not want to be a father…and deal with all his flying monkeys. This new era of “children should be taken care of” is an era built on the backs of women who fought & didn’t get any care for themselves or their children.
I give props to any single mom who gets through it- however she sees it navigated.
PS- your dad can give you his back child support now, like he’d put it in a trust but save all the court fees. You should clear his & his wife’s conscience & ask for it.

I sued my ex and am glad I did, because now there is a statute of limitations and you can only go back 5 years. He played all the games, working under the table etc… He still owes me $25,000 dollars(down from $57,000) and has to pay $200.00 every month until it is paid and my son is 33! I wanted to give up, but my son deserves this money(I give it to him).

When people talk about LA face is this what they mean? In her first photo she looks like Megan Fox. In the others she just looks like someone who has had too much cookie-cutter work done.

    • Jan90067 says:

It’s like there is only one “blueprint” for the “blow-up-doll-face” for all these women. Perhaps the *first* surgery leaves them looking like themselves, but improved, but they all seem to go overboard for the whittled down nose, plumped up lips, filled cheeks, and sharpie eyebrows. They could literally be coming off a conveyor belt. The only different thing might be height and hair color.

I saw one in the wild this morning (very much out of LA). She looked disconcerting at the least and she wasn’t even too far gone.

    • smlstrs says:

Ohmygoodness I’m glad I wasn’t the only person initially wondering why Megan Fox’s photo was in topping this article!

      • SarahCS says:

        Yep, and me.

      • Malificent says:

Same here. Before I clicked the link, I’m like WTF? Megan Fox and Nick Cannon are having a baby together now too?

People have got to stop with the LA Face. Megan’s old face was beautiful, and I’m sure Brie’s was too. You can still play video games without needing to actually look like your avatar….

      • lucy2 says:

OMG same here. I thought Meghan or a weird Kim K.

Does he have enough “baby mamas” for a class action lawsuit? He’s got to be close right?
(I hate the term baby mamas!)

    • kirk says:

Class action! That’s hilarious. I watched that episode yesterday and missed the part where she said “a vibrator would be more helpful.” Which is also hilarious. I used to feel sad about Nick and Mariah Carey breakup because it seemed he was head over heels with her, but now, ugh. Truth will be revealed in the fullness of time.

OMG from the thumbnail pic I thought it was Dua Lupa and got so confused.

Selling sunset gets faker every season. I stopped watching.

    • Erin says:

I watched the first couple of seasons and then when I turned on Netflix this weekend the preview started for this season so I sat and watched for about ten minutes and went, nah. They have all seemingly gotten more work done since the first season, I didn’t even recognize Mary! I just can’t look at all of those white women with fake everything and the creepiest whitest teeth I’ve ever seen.

Also, I looked up Bre because I thought I recognized her name and she was married to Mr. Football and dated Hulk Hogan’s son. In those pics with Hogan’s son she looks like a completely different person, literally.

  6. Old_Crone says:

Serious question. What is wrong with this man?

  7. Southern Fried says:

This woman was trying to make her coworkers believe she was special, that she and Nick had an ongoing exclusive partner relationship, like living together. She couldn’t hide her shock in front of coworkers so she’s a lying mess and not really okay with Nick’s dropping babies left and right.

  8. Kim says:

Yes they do cap child support claims, however it’s based on income level and source.

A man that’s on disability payments won’t be required to pay for 10 kids. Now, each kid can have a chance at a slot as the other kids age off. This can be verified with the social security administration. Source: I have met multiple women who tried to claim child support from disability and unemployment.

Someone like nick cannon would have to pay for 10 kids because the income and source is there.

  9. JanetDR says:

I know in NYS it is percentage based. First child 17% of income minus FICA, two children 25% (not sure after that as I had 2). If he has another litter, then the percentage comes after the existing child support order is taken into account. So, 2 more kids with wife #2 would receive 25% of what was left after child support was paid to family number one and so on down the line. I’m trying to recall if it was different for very large incomes and think it may be. Child support payable through age 18, or college if they attend.

    • Concern Fae says:

Thanks for this. I know the system does « protect » the first family to a certain extent, mostly to stop a father from having more kids to lower the support payments to the first wife. Had a co-worker who was continually enraged that she was supposed to be raising kids on her husband’s child-support reduced salary. She seemed to think that her having two kids should reduce the child support for his older two kids in half. She wanted to be a SAHM so bad and was pissed 😤! Everyone could see that fathers like that were exactly why the law is structured that way. She’s probably a total MAGA now.

  10. J. Ferber says:

After the broadcast, Nick gifted Bre with a Lamborghini and bragged about it, “Bre, you get Lambo support, which is better!” I think this was a set-up so Nick could claim he’s far more generous than “standard” child support, so his baby mamas should not ask for it. He has BETTER goodies (though not guaranteed) to give his women! Now they’ll be afraid to ask for standard child support. A power and control move for sure. He DOES have a harem!

    • Coco says:

How are the other women be afraid to ask for child support because this Bre chick got a car?

  11. Carey says:

I also thought it was Megan fox at first glance! This surgery trend of generic, Hollywood face is sad. That fact her lawyer made this statement tells me the cracks are showing in the Nick Cannon Baby Mama (TM) camp. It’s ain’t the fun and games they all try to say it is. I read on people that this chick was also mad when she found out he got another chick pregnant and was jealous according to this show. They also had a story he spends most of his time with the newest baby mama so that’s the current main chick and the rest are the sides. This is gonna be a huge mess in a few years.
