The Chelsea Flower Show started on Monday and it runs until Saturday. The flower show has always been a popular event for the Windsors, and usually various royals will pop into the show on different days, especially if they have a connection to one or more of the exhibitions. On Monday, the Princess of Wales did her big “surprise” picnic with schoolchildren. Kate brought at least a dozen photographers to document her surprise picnic and the photos went viral for all the wrong reasons, mostly because those kids weren’t buying whatever the Duchess of Karens was selling. Still, it was a huge photo-op for Kate and she was on the front of most of the newspapers. On the very same day, King Charles and Queen Camilla also visited the Chelsea Flower Show… and their visit barely got any attention. Granted, their visit didn’t involve photogenic multiracial children, but still. Camilla staggered around like she was half in the bag and the king loves gardens. So, obviously, a message needed to be sent to She Who Keens.
Royal insiders have expressed concerns that King Charles was overshadowed by the Princess of Wales during his first visit to the Chelsea Flower Show as monarch. His Majesty, who is known to be a keen gardener and lover of nature, attended the annual event in London on Monday, May 22, for the first time since becoming King.
While there the monarch and his wife, Queen Camilla, presented a medal in memory of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth, to honour the leading lights of gardening – and will be given to 70 people at any one time in memory of Her Majesty’s 70-year reign.
However, some royal sources have expressed concern that the visit by Charles and Camilla was overshadowed by a surprise appearance by Catherine, Princess of Wales, to the same event on the same day. Kate was seen meeting youngsters from ten schools taking part in the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Campaign for School Gardening where she encouraged participants to ‘work hard’. But the amount of coverage given to the younger royal’s visit has sparked alarm in some circles that Charles may find himself eclipsed by his daughter-in-law, a claim mirroring that when was married to his first wife, Princess Diana.
One insider told the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden: ‘With his love of horticulture, His Majesty’s appearance at Chelsea was an important engagement. It’s a shame that his visit with Her Majesty the Queen received less coverage than might have been expected. I hope they are not too disappointed.’
“I hope they are not too disappointed” = Charles and Camilla are absolutely furious at Kate’s stunt-queenery with the children. Now, in my opinion, C&C are failing to see the big picture, which is that Kate’s asinine photo-op is still blowing up in her face – those photos are still going viral, the photos of little kids giving Kate the sideeye and looking distressed at the state of her wiglet, and Kate absolutely looks like a jackass who uses Black and brown children as her diversity props, as she’s been doing for years. Still, Kate got what she wanted: she dominated the 24-hour royal newscycle. She “won.” And trust me, Charles and Camilla will carry that grudge. We might actually see them turn on Our Lady of Perpetual Buttons.

Lol that picnic basket was packed by someone who has no kids, or kind of hates them. Nothing in there a kid that age would reach for. Have the bananas and oranges peeled and in slices. Have a few napkins. Better yet, offer snacks that kids actually like. All of it, the sweet children included, were just props. So cynical and cringe.
Maybe they hired some former Party Pieces photographers? And we’re seeing why the company tanked. How is that a picnic?? And even as an adult, those aren’t fruits I want to eat without being able to rinse my hands afterward.
She finally brought something! Wow.
Her fake smile in that photo too – she literally looks like she’s gritting her teeth. None of it looks fun for anyone involved.
What I don’t understand, is aren’t all her official visits on the palace calendars? Was it really a surprise to Charles that she was visiting before he was, or was it just a surprise to him that she got more attention than he did (because that part shouldn’t be a surprise lol). In the future he should probably visit the first day and then make her visit a different day or something. But honestly, noone is going to care about him regardless. I feel like the only way he can really stay relevant is to push for an end to the monarchy behind the scenes or something. Being the last king of England is pretty much his only chance to be relevant or known for anything other than being married to Diana and tampongate.
Embarrassing. Every single time she comes empty handed and with this half filled basket, she looks even more stupid. Kids didn’t bother too much that the future kween was sitting next to them.

Yes Chuck is voraciously self-centered man. However, this story may be preferable to the “King Charles urged to intervene over ‘insulting’ child sexual abuse payments” running in the Guardian today. Seems that Chuck’s “Prince’s Trust is legally liable for the [sex abuse] survivors’ claims because it took over Fairbridge, a UK-focused charity whose previous iteration ran the farm schools, in 2012.” The Prince’s Trust is proposing given each sex abuse survivor £2,000 total. Can you imagine being born into poor working class family or care home and having UK transport you to Australia and Canada for ‘education’ and being abused for years instead.
So, maybe Chuck is actually happy Kate imported brown children to Chelsea Flower Show. It distracts from the news about cheapskate Prince’s Trust.
I don’t often say this, but go Keen go! Anything that upsets Charles and his Sidepiece is A-OK with me. And perhaps rather than focusing on the people who “eclipse” him (like Diana), he should consider why he is so very easy to eclipse.

Absolutely. Does Charles understand why he is unpopular? Has he ever done a deep dive into understanding why everyone either ignores him or despises him? I can’t recall QEII ever expressing any particular issues with being “overshadowed,” but that seems to be all Charles ever thinks about. I know we dissect the KP/BP dynamic all the time around here, but most casual observers of the family assume that they all play for the same team. A net positive PR day for Kate should be a net positive day for the entire royal family. I don’t like Kate and think her flower show appearance was dumb (as usual), but he should be rooting for her.
The only issue I ever saw QEII have was when she was “visited” by that dotard, Trump who proceeded to walk in front of her. Ugh. What an embarrassment to the U.S.
Actually, the queen was taken aback at the continued amount of press the then Lady Diana received when the engagement was announced. Royal reporters ignored her events in order to cover the young and beautiful fiancee. The queen loosened the restrictions around press at her events in order to gain more coverage but it didn’t happen.
This is also when her style changed and the hats, etc. became more modern.
Didn’t QEII also get upset when they were young and Princess Margaret got more attention because she was spontaneous and more fun to be around? The Crown made a big deal about how the Q ended up freezing Margaret out because of it. (Obvi I know The Crown is fictionalized, but that was a major plot beat that I assume came from somewhere.)
I’m not familiar with any rivalries for popularity that QEII may have had with other female royals, but a comparison can be made in how to handle it when you have a megastar wife as Charles did with Diana. President Obama often heaps praise on Michelle in speeches and says things like he married up. And John F. Kennedy, even if they didn’t have the best marriage, said famously that he would be known as the man who accompanied Jackie Kennedy to Paris. Any man with an iota of strength and security doesn’t worry about being overshadowed by his WIFE! Her wins are your wins. As I stated in another post, Charles comes off as petty, small and weak – the opposite of regal, noble and strong. For that matter, William and Kate appear to be following Charles’ lead in that.
In Spare, Harry said that Charles couldn’t do X, Y and Z because of pushback from the Queen in attention diversion.
She really was a great self-promoter in that the public wouldn’t dream of her being guilty of any of these petty jealousies that Charles and William so evidently harbour – but of course she did.
Feathers were ruffled when Diana turned up at the state opening of parliament with a new hairstyle which took attention away from the Queen. She was told off by the courtiers.
In Spare, Harry said his relationship with William was like the relationship Between the Queen and Margaret. Intense sibling rivalry fuelled by jealousy in the older sibling. I was surprised, as I didn’t think the Queen would be like that.
Marion Crawford in her book said Elizabeth Margaret used hit each other with a left hook in the schoolroom. Which also surprised me.
I find this whole thing fascinating. First the lateness to the coronation, and the fact that, even though Camilla said ‘no tiaras,’ Kate’s headpiece was basically a tiara without jewels. And the fact that, out of the hundreds of earrings she has, she wore earrings that belonged to Diana, knowing that everything she was wearing would be reported on, so bringing the late Princess into the conversation. And now this ‘upstaging’ thing. If we didn’t know better, this could almost seem like a rebellion. If Meghan had done any of these things she would have been destroyed by the press, too.
I don’t know about rebellion, but definitely testing her boundaries.

Diana’s earrings were definitely intentional, and I’m guessing she and William were in full alignment on that. It’s also no coincidence that none of them curtsied or bowed to Camilla.

Instead, the BM uses hesitant, timid language like the royal insiders and royal sources have “expressed concern” about Kate’s visit. Oh, my God, such scathing words! For Pete’s sake, they expressed more outrage when Meghan took a hike with her friends after the coronation — and she took a walk in her own damn hometown in a totally different country oceans away.
Yesterday I praised my 3 yr old for putting on all his clothes for the day and my 5 yr old started crying. We had a very productive talk about how to manage feelings of jealousy and how mommy has enough love to be proud of both boys. I would say that by the end of our talk, my 5 yr old was evincing far more perspective and growth than whatever tf Charles is working with.

It really IS a choice – to go out when no event was scheduled, on a day she knew C&C were out, to the SAME event she knew C&C were at, to something she knew C&C were interested in and about and where she knew CIII was presenting a medal in memory of his mother, knowing her appearance would pull focus.

William used to be the impetus for them only working part time and not doing bread and butter engagements. However, he’s withdrawn from kate and the Middletons in the last few years and has sided with Charles against Harry and kept kate away from the statue unveiling. William stayed away from this because he’s not looking to start something with Charles. Kate is doing this on her own and without William protecting her as he did in the past, things are going to get interesting.

My opinion. Charles made William wait until after the coronation (because he didn’t want any more bombs dropped before) to announce a divorce. Kate knows or suspects this. And all these visits are her way of trying to stop it. She thinks she’s making herself indespencible. But she’s just making Charles and Camilla mad.

This on top of their lateness to the Coronation – not looking good for the Keens, esp Catty. That story about her parent business was not only front page of the Fail the did 2 big stories about it – now while we all know Ma has contacts as the Fail but I think given that slant of the stories (i.e. the fact that there was one headline proclaiming they had avoid insolvency) tells me Cams had a finger in it. Ma would not have wanted the narrative slanted that way.
The knives are out for Catty and her family – am still convinced we will have a divorce announcement before the end of the summer with them taking the flack for Sussexit and for Peggy being a violent man child.

I don’t think the word divorce is used just yet. They will copy the playbook when the previous generation had issues and use separation first.
I also think this is why William hasn’t been seen with her since the coronation events. He usually went to the flower show events with her in the past. He was not there this year.
They did appear to have had an bust-up just prior to arriving at the crowning. She had her evil hatchet face on big time and he looked like he’d swallowed a thorn. That marriage is over in all but name, and I think all of Khate’s cutesy appearances is her way of showing how relevant she is to the BRF. Bulliam is off twisting in the wind and figuring out a way to spin the separation in his favour. The Midds are on shaky ground for sure.
The Garden Show is mine! To be fair, Charles has earned his place as the King of the gardens, as he actually has achieved something quite spectacular at Highgrove. Meanwhile, Kate is just baby-braining it: gardens = a pink dress; fake picnics = large whole pieces of fruit in a pretty basket; cameramen = lots of diverse children gathered round.
It looks like Camilla got off her death bed to come to the flower show so being upstaged won’t land well. It’s back to the cauldron for some revenge on Mumbles.
And now we will all have a front seat as the War of the Roses takes hold.

A very small piece of me feels sympathy for Kate. She’ll never, ever win with any of these people. Not with Charles, not with the press, and likely not even with her own husband.

I’ve been reading The Season by Sophie Campbell about the summer social season in Britain. It is a tradition that the Queen (now the King) attends the first day of the Chelsea Flower Show. The Queen used to always show up by 5 pm, followed by the lesser royals in a minibus. C&C showed up with all the elderly royals, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Princess Alexandra, and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. The Princess of Wales would have known that, so her little stunt was deliberate. She could have scheduled her photo op for another day.
But this way is more fun—for us!

It’s clear that Camilla and Charles were upset that Kate overshadowed them. Meh…if Harry and Meghan were still in the UK, William and Kate would be complaining that they were being overshadowed by the Sussexes. Two sides of the same coin.
This was a photo-op by Kate which has backfired on her big time. She’s been dragged all over Twitter because the photos highlighted how disinterested the kids were in her and now this! Her appearance has also highlighted how disunited the family really is. She may think she’s won the battle but, C&C will make her pay for this.
Does anyone remember when Harry had exhibits at the show? Both times the pictures showed TQ, PP, C&C all turning up to support him. I remember because it was noticeable that W&K weren’t there. I would have had more respect for Kate if she had “surprised” us all with an exhibit supporting one of her charities. Instead she’s upset the king for pictures with children who didn’t look overjoyed to see her.

CBers if you have HBO (now renamed Max) watch “The Prince.” Id never seen the dark comedy animated series but binged last week and it’s so funny. Prince George asks “Can I feed Camilla a sugar cube?” W+K loathe each other on the show.
I don’t recommend anyone to watch that show. The creator got followers through posting almost exclusively about Charlotte and George insulting / slut-shaming Meghan. And he had a lot of famous followers who liked his posts. That’s how he got the show.
Yeah that show was produced by Gary Janetti who was one of the primary sources of Meghan hate in the early days. He stopped after BLM marches happened and was getting called out for his racism and misogyny towards Meghan.

Sorry, but Keen doesn’t outshine anyone. This was a maneuver with the cooperation of the rr. Apparently, the wails offered something more than Camilla so they totally over exposed mrs wails and mostly ignored C&C. Still, no one but derangers care about Keen. Also, I think this was dreamed up by Will, Keen would never have the nerve to do this on her own, and he is letting his feelings for Camilla be known. Hope Keen likes that tin foil headpiece she wore to the coronation, I don’t think she’s getting near the good jewelry for a long time.
If W can successfully use K as a weapon against Camzilla, then that does explain why he might not divorce her.
The UK papers out her on the cover instead of Charles so that’s what they are taking as “outshining”. I agree it isn’t very much. No one outside of the UK was aware of this flower show unless they make an effort to follow royals. That said, I suspect that BP courtiers are putting out warnings for KP through the media that Kate has overstepped.

Eh…this is the same woman who turned Prince Philip’s funeral into her own Dynasty cosplay photoshoot and who abruptly cancelled appearances at events like the Tusk gala. I think she has plenty of nerve and arrogance to do this on her own.

Was some UK coverage of Kate more glowing than the article quoted here yesterday? Because if not, it’s hard to see how that could be interpreted by KC and his sunshine band as “eclipsing,” because it was awful! Terrible photos adorning prose that appeared to deliberately paint her as tone-deaf, dim, and low-class all at once. Not something to be jealous of.
I don’t care for Kates little two bit stunts, especially using those kids as props. However, Charles dropped the ball on this visit. He should’ve opened the show or at least had a little bit more fanfare. He and Camila should’ve dressed better. He hasn’t been there in years. This was his first time there as as king with his queen, and he shows up later in the day and just wanders around. What was the schedule, where was the speech and highlighting the exhibits with more than just small talk? No wonder Kate stepped into the void and took a bit of his thunder. Typical of their petty amateur coordination over there. Whatever work was out into this visit, it looked subpar. They can all fight it out for attention and step on each other’s toes.
I don’t know what’s sadder: Kate trying to over-shadow Charles, or Charles, who is freaking KING, being bent out of shape about his daughter-in-law showing up at a flower show and attracting some attention.
I remember how warped I thought the whole thing was when I watched S2 of “The Crown.” Margaret couldn’t announce her engagement to Lord Snowden until QE had gotten to the point in her third pregnancy when she could announce it to the public. Like, WTF is that? It was her THIRD child. She had an heir and a spare already. Granted they made it seem like it was the courtiers who set the rules, but still.

Somehow I am elated at this. Kate clearly hasn’t learned her lesson about overshadowing/outshining Chares and Camilla. Her stunt to be late to the Coronation was clearly not dealt with harshly enough by Their Majesties. I don’t know what they should do to her–clearly not a car chase–but her secret “surprise” appearance would never have been approved by He Who Must Obtain All the Light. What is she thinking?
