Mary Louise Parker is now and has always been a real one. She’s done it all, from movies to TV shows to theater to voice acting. She’s currently promoting her voice work on an Audible original podcast called Murder in Bermuda, which is why she chatted with the Guardian via video conference. She called in from Bucharest, where she’s filming something about the Civil War. Her range, honestly. Mary Louise chatted with the Guardian about voice work, theatre work, living in Brooklyn and then, at the end of the piece, the Guardian asks her about her ex’s recent wedding. Billy Crudup – the man who left her while she was seven months pregnant with their son – married Naomi Watts in a quiet ceremony last week. Some highlights:
Her voice work on podcasts & audiobooks: “It’s a weird exercise because it’s very technical. Sometimes your voice gets really, really tired. I would never do an audiobook while I’m doing a play because it’s just too tiring for the voice. This came about like when I just finished a play and I liked the character so …”
Her work on Weeds & The West Wing: “Even if you do one episode of something, it’s immediate, the people’s reactions to you on the street, you just become much more visible … I always considered myself like a regional theater actress who does, like, you know, Broadway and then, like, I do, like, some movies or whatever sometimes …”
When she first did Weeds: “Chris Rock made fun of me at the Golden Globes because nobody knew what Showtime was. I just took it because I liked that part.” Now rumors are swirling about a Weeds reboot. “Every time I ask, it seems to be close. But because of the strike, we don’t know. And it can fall apart at any time.” She says she isn’t getting her hopes up. “It’s just … I’m so much older now. It’s like it doesn’t have the same currency, you know, for a woman of my age, so I don’t know. But I think if they actually use that, it could be interesting.”
She used to have a farm in upstate New York: It was where she made maple syrup and tended to goats. But she isn’t comfortable driving a car, and the chauffeuring duties fell to “whatever boyfriend or like babysitter or whomever”, she said. “I just … worked it out.” Now that one of her kids is out of high school, and the other has only one year to go till graduation, she has sold the farm. As charming as the simple life was, it was tricky to pull off. Her current life is centered in Brooklyn. She keeps a low profile, and takes cues from her good friend, Laura Linney. “Laura takes the subway, and it’s like Laura, you know, she went to theater school and she keeps doing theater. We have a similar thing where we’re not, like, running for office in Hollywood.”
On Botox: “How do you express stuff? I’m a theatre actress. As you can see by my forehead and my eyes, I like to be able to express myself. It’s like, if I can’t move my forehead, there’s so many things you can’t convey.”
On Billy Crudup’s marriage: When Parker speaks with the Guardian, news of Crudup’s surprise courthouse marriage to Naomi Watts is only three days old. She seems stunned to be asked about this – we’d been talking about books, and Botox and Brooklyn. “I wish them well,” she’s quick to say, her eyes a little betrayed. “And absolutely, I honestly of course wish them every happiness because that’s my son’s father. So I’m happy for them. I’m happy they found each other –”
That last part was when the publicist cut off the interview, basically. At first I was like “oh, so did Crudup even tell MLP that he was getting married?” I think she did know (maybe not from him) and she was just surprised to be asked about it. In the years since Crudup left her, MLP usually just avoids talking about him completely, and her publicist must instruct journalists not to even go there. Anyway, MLP is a real one and I wish her the best. She deserves the world and I really wish she worked more, especially on television. Hire her!!

It was tacky to ask her that. Why would she know what’s going on in his life and at this point, why would she care? Ugh, don’t put people on the spot regarding their ex-partners.
Very disappointing. I would expect better from The Guardian.
Extremely tacky and totally unnecessary.
She probably found out from her son .
this is genuinely the only thing I think about when I see Billy.
She’s so damn good at acting. One of my favorite roles of hers was in Best In Show. She was hilarious. BC really wronged her but she has moved on.
K – You may be thinking about Parker Posey.
Yeah, MLP wasn’t in Best in Show.
Billy was with their son Atticus where she was honored at the 2019 International Women of Vision Awards. So they do seem to get on well enough for him to support her in that way. I appreciate how lovely and generous she has been all these years.
Does anyone else feel like there are a stunning number of marriages don’t really turn out to be good arrangements for women?
Billy Crudup and Mary Louise Parker were never married.
However, I do agree that marriage always benefits men and not usually the women. Based on a study published in the journal JAMA Network Open. Excerpt from the Toronto Sun below:
‘Married men saw the biggest drops in mortality rates, with research pointing out that men who are tied down are less likely to take risks, get into accidents or consume alcohol and drugs.
The “protective effect” of marriage, where a partner encourages their spouse to seek medical treatment, could be a contributing factor, according to the study, as are better financial situations and healthier lifestyles.
Bad news for women, though, as a deep dive into the data revealed that their mortality benefited less if they were married.
Researchers said that could be due to domestic labour not being equally divided in Asian marriages, thus putting more stress on women which “may counteract the health benefits of marriage.”
The study also pointed out that unmarried women are more likely to have a job and have more money and access to better health.’

I first remember her from Fried Green Tomatoes- haven’t seen that movie in ages
I loved that movie and MLP!
Her answer was the best answer possible.
Yes that was a great movie. Loved the line “every time the phone’s not ringing, that’s me not calling”. And the classic “I’m older and I have more insurance!”
(Neither of which are said by MLP, but she was great in that movie. She’s one of those actresses you just root for)
I nicknamed him Billy Creep-up at the time of his split with MLP and it stuck for me and my sister so much that we often forget his real last name.
MLP has class.
I wish Naomi good luck with that guy. She is going to need it.
I think they actually get along well, though. I noticed when Billy won his Emmy a couple of years ago he thanked all the kids in his life and included Mary Louise Parker’s daughter Ash (that was born long after they broke up, so he was never technically her stepdad or anything) and I remember thinking that was sweet that he’d include his son’s sister and that there was obviously some kind of a friendly connection. There are also photos of him walking around with the little girl, just the two of them. So MLP clearly trusts him enough to be a part of his daughter’s life.
I also think it was rude for the interviewer to ask her about it.
She was with Jeffrey Dean Morgan when she adopted. They were engaged either before or after but split when the daughter was just a toddler. (I’m guessing based on the dates but I don’t know how old she was when MLP adopted her.) I wonder if he has any relationship or if it was just a break. But that’s got to be hard. An engagement indicates a future marriage which indicates him being her parent. It’s not like he was just her mom’s boyfriend for a bit.
Yuck, why would the interviewer ambush her with a question like that? To make her feel humiliated about how the man treated her twenty years ago? No wonder she looked betrayed.
I notice no one ever mentions Tom Brady in these conversations or gave Gisele Bundchen the same hard time that people gave to Claire Daines
Please remember that Bridget Moynihan was pregnant when he left her for Gisele
Eh, they had already broken up by the time she knew she was pregnant. So it’s not really the same thing at all.
I know next to nothing about MLP and crudup’s relationship. They were and have always been private. All I know is they were together about six years in the 1990s and split before their kid was born. it could have been the same deal – in that they broke up and then she found out she was pregnant or it could have been BC really really didn’t want kids and she went ahead and got pregnant. I know a couple like that and they ended up splitting because he felt betrayed that she didn’t give any weight to his wishes and just got pregnant anyway because it was what she wanted. I’m not ready to throw him under a bus because neither have said what happened. BUT I hate when people ask anyone questions about an ex getting remarried, having kids or anything with a new partner. Its rude.
@lens MLP was seven months pregnant. It was big news at the time. Maybe they were on the rocks before that, who knows. But they were definitely together.
I’ve loved her since fried green tomatoes. But she looks like she has definitely had work done on her face.
So what? I think nobody needs to judge a 58 year old actress having work done. We would criticize her if she didn’t because now we don’t know how 58 year old actresses look because they’ve all had work done to stay in the industry.
Always really liked her and wish I could see more of her. I just rewatched ’Angels in America’ where everyone is at the absolute top of their acting game. She was outstanding. Highly recommend-it’s only better after 20 years.
thanks for this recommendation! I loved that play in college but have never actually seen it performed.
I would be irritated and caught off guard too if I was asked about the wedding of someone I broke up with nearly 20 years ago. Especially when it’s clear the topic wasn’t to be brought up.
Co-signing @HollyGolightly’s and @girl_ninja’s points above and adding my two cents. There’s plenty of evidence that shows that despite whatever happened between Parker and Crudup 20 years ago, they seem to get along and have had a supportive relationship now for a while.
Look, I’m not pro-cheater or anything. But life is complex and messy, people make mistakes, and we never know exactly what happens in these people’s lives. When there’s evidence of cheating in other famous relationships people don’t throw around the same “if he’ll do it with you, he’ll do it to you” (gag) tropes on posts about them forever and ever. There’s a lot of picking and choosing. There’s also a lot of picking and choosing about when to blame the woman when a man who is not single cheats with her (I remember a lot of gross comments on Alicia Keys, years and children later and after lots of evidence that she and the ex-wife have a good relationship). I’m just not gonna assume Billy Crudup is a serial cheater. “Once a cheater, always a cheater” is a stupid trope and disregards the complexity of life and relationships.
I love MLP and would love to see her in more stuff! There are too many reboots but I would totally watch a Weeds reboot.
She is lovely. Fried Green Tomatoes is an eternal favourite about female love and friendship. And she’s friends with Laura Linney. IMO the best Laura.
“Bless their hearts.”
I loved her so much in Fried Green Tomatoes. I feel bad for her getting asked that question. I hate when people bring up my ex. It has been thirty years ago. I still get bristly. I have put that to bed and gone on with life. She has too. More celebs need to tell reporters they are out of line. I love that Laura Linney takes the subway.
