Prince William was really feeling himself over the weekend. His office made arrangements to completely overshadow King Charles’s first Trooping the Colour parade in two ways. One, William released two Father’s Day photos with his children, and he made sure to get the photos to the newspapers in time to make almost all of the Sunday papers. Secondly, William gave a big exclusive interview to Roya Nikkhah at the Sunday Times, wherein William made news by talking about housing homeless folks on Duchy land and he previewed his big new project, which will be launched in the coming days/weeks. As I said yesterday, I cannot wait to see how King Charles punishes William for all of this thunder-stealing. Well, it’s begun already. From the Mail’s Eden Confidential column:
Prince William’s decision to give his first big interview as heir to the throne on the weekend of his father’s inaugural King’s Birthday Parade has put the cat among the pigeons at the palace, I hear. In the interview, with The Sunday Times, the Prince talked about his ambitions to ‘end’ homelessness and failed to mention King Charles’s efforts to provide social housing when he was in charge of the Duchy of Cornwall.
William caused further tensions by releasing a sweet Father’s Day photograph of him with his children in time for the Sunday papers.
‘The timing of the interview will certainly have raised eyebrows at Buckingham Palace,’ a senior former palace official tells me. ‘The interview and the Father’s Day picture have blown His Majesty off the front pages on the weekend of his first King’s Birthday Parade. It could have been sequenced better, especially given that the Duchy social-housing initiative isn’t being launched for a while yet.’
Media management is a thorny subject in the Royal Family. In his controversial memoir, Spare, Prince Harry claimed he and his brother, William, were restricted in how many public engagements they could undertake.
Oh, William “failed to mention King Charles’s efforts to provide social housing when he was in charge of the Duchy of Cornwall” as well? Probably because… Charles wasn’t known for giving away free housing to unhoused people? Charles ran the Duchy like a profitable real estate empire (which it is), not a charity. Anyway, “It could have been sequenced better” is definitely Britspeak for “the King is mad as a hornet.” I find this curious too: “especially given that the Duchy social-housing initiative isn’t being launched for a while yet.” William made it sound like it would launch within the next week or two – was his interview just another promise to be keen? And if the launch isn’t for a few months, why did William give the interview? It’s a lot like Kate and Chelsea Flower Show mess – William did all of this knowing that he was going to overshadow his father.

They were triangulating their anger at each other through Harry and Meghan, but those two wisely peaced out, and now they only have each other to be mean to. It’s such a hallmark of dysfunctional families to do this (according to family systems therapists). They really thought H & M were trapped and thus they could use them to triangulate until Charles died.

On Sunday itself to be in the Monday papers. Or even just on social media Sunday.
Exactly @BQM – if they had released the pictures actually on Father’s Day, Charles would still have been front page of the papers because of print deadlines. Or if William hadn’t given an interview to the Times, the pictures might not have been as interesting to the press as they were.

Whenever I see Charles, all I can think is that he got into the children’s dress up box again. He looks utterly ridiculous in his play costumes.
He has no presence at all. He just looks tired and not well, and always has such a hang-dog expression on his face in most pictures. His ascension to the throne seems to have not been the joyous experience he expected – and felt he deserved after all the decades of waiting. As for his wife…not only does she lack presence, she looks downright slovenly at times, barely making an effort with her appearance. She’s always touted as being down to earth and natural, but there are times when you need to make some effort, and she seldom seems to try. What a sad pair…
Yeah, it’s weird. They’ve never looked great, but they both seem to have aged 20 years in the past few months. Edward, too. Charles looks like he’s pushing 90. When Philip got older, he still had a spark and still seemed charming. There’s no spark with Charles. There never was one.

Well, there’s this: Can anyone see a good reason to celebrate Charles as a father? Of course William was being as petty as his father. Seems like the war is on. Perhaps the tabs can lay off Meghan and Harry for a a bit while William and William make themselves a laughing stock. William is indeed his father’s son. War of the Windsors? Monarch and Heir fighting? At least there is a lot of historical precedent for that situation.

Harry gave Charles a good edit in “Spare,” and Charles should be forever grateful to his son for his empathy and caring in doing so. Harry could’ve said much more than he did, but he settled for [paraphrasing] “Pa was never meant to be a father, but I give him credit for occasionally trying.”
The bit about it not really starting for a little while stuck to me too. William really made a choice here! Is this because or partly because he’s not getting the real estate he wants? Does he think it’s clever for him to be pushing homelessness when he’s trying to get another home from Charles? It sounds like the kind of thing he would think makes him look extraordinarily clever and ruthless. “Pa, you know what this is really about.” But actually, it’s really patronizing and cruel to the unhoused.
I think William and Charles deserve each other. Kinda happy they’ve ended up stuck with each other.

Honestly I think William made up an answer to a question about social housing in relation to the Duchy and now he’s stuck with coming up with a program. He had no “upcoming” program, it solely existed from that interview and now they have to produce something because it’s gotten such huge headlines.
Remember, there was that line about whoever was with him being aghast that William had provided a concrete detail. He went off-leash. You’re right that the interesting thing is to see if he follows through with his first response to Roya’s pointed question about using duchy resources.
My thoughts exactly. I think William went off piste in that interview. I’m sure there will be no more talk of providing social housing via the Duchy. It will be allowed to fade away until everyone’s forgotten about it. Much like every other “big initiative” the Waleses come up with.
I said below that I thought William was planning to take credit for the social housing in Chuck’s pet Poundbury settlement. That had little to do with altruism and everything to do with Charles fiddling around with urban planning in a real-life Sim City.

I saw a documentary about the Duchy of Cornwall on PBS. William appeared in the documentary for about 5-10 minutes, and he seemed to know, and care, very little about the duchy or its operations. He said he was “still learning” (of course). I probably still know more after watching a 2-hour propaganda piece about it.
At any rate, all they have to do now is just add to the existing plans and–voila!–he’s added social housing as part of his initiative. Isn’t William wonderful?!
It would also show how out of touch he is with the duchy itself. If there are these programs in place, whatever the stage, William should know it. He could’ve just said he had plans to build on what his father started. Which also could’ve been a nice Father’s Day touch.

I honestly had no idea that Trooping the Colour was even happening this past weekend, and I live in London. No one I know gives a crap!

I find it so odd that this family sets up, and funds, individual press offices for their principals – which are designed to run independently and with little daily coordination – and then gets mad when those offices…run independently and step on each other’s news cycles. When QEII was alive, there were THREE offices. It really seems now like Liz didn’t care, but we know that Charles sure does, so it’s curious that he hasn’t restructured.
@beana, maybe Liz didn’t care but Christopher Geidt did care and I think that’s one of the reasons that he was pushed out by Charles (and probably KP). Sometime around 2016 or 2017 he started trying to consolidate parts of the three offices. KP (or part thereof), was to have been merged into the BP offices (or was it Clarence house?) but the Cambridge’s staff, just as pissy as their masters, would either just not show up or show up put their coats on the backs of their chairs and then leave for the day. They were so dismissive of BP’s efforts to try to bring the different offices together that it failed miserably and very quickly. What surprised me at the time was how KP was not just dismissive of Geidt but of the Queen as well. This was, after all, her office trying to ameliorate things and bring the different offices together. This is around the time that Geidt called that big all-hands-on-deck meeting in London for staff that pissed quite a few people off. So, maybe the Queen didn’t care but she was certainly aware of the problem.
^^ True @May. Reportedly, it was Chuck’s and Andrew’s courtiers who pushed Geidt out in 2017, around the same time when Philip officially retired from royal duties. Andrew notoriously did not get along with Geidt, who had tried to rein in Andrew’s excesses. Despite Geidt having faithfully and successfully served the Queen and the monarchy for over 20 years, the elderly Queen allowed the overthrow to happen.
At her advanced age, the Queen had likely long since ceded what little control and decisionmaking authority she had to her courtiers and to Chuck & his staff. It was Chuck’s guy, Edward Young, who took over Geidt’s role as the Queen’s private secretary.
How incredibly sad that these two can’t even get through something as benign as Father’s Day without turning it into a bitter competition. How can either of them ever expect to command respect as a head of state — much less head of a religion whose most deeply held value is supposed to be forgiveness! — when they’re more interested in outdoing one another than displaying any sort of leadership?
The monarchy showing itself to be a petty, vindictive institution as well as a racist one. When hierarchy is all that matters, individuals will claw for the top rung.
I can’t help but think that William’s rushed interview on how he single-handedly plans to terminate homelessness throughout broken Britain, subconsciously mirrors his own housing whims.
Ragingham wasn’t handed the keys of Royal Lodge in the split second he digitally declared himself the new Prince of Wales, so his wrathful, obsessive sense of entitlement is letting Charles know that the Waleses’ homing issue must be tackled the way he – Bullyiam – is about to address homelessness for the nation.
The retaliatory tit for tat is blatant, especially when looked at through William’s mental lens of projecting his personal housing drama onto the nationwide social issue: I, William can eradicate homelessness on a larger scale, so why can’t you for me? The analogy only makes sense for him.
It’s fascinating to realize that when the Y-chromosomal Karen chose to address racism in football, he wasn’t so much fighting popular prejudices in sports as his own uncontrolled displays of racism when challenged with healthy competition. Fast forward, why homelessness? It sounds so arbitrary given to fact that homelessness is just ONE of the multifarious symptoms of a deeper cause: poverty.
Why homelessness and not illiteracy or healthy nutrition? My take is that Willy picked homelessness – one side of a multifaceted economic problem – as a self-serving means of cathartic relief for being denied Royal Lodge. In other words, brat’s calling dadda’s attention to his own homelessness predicament 😢 😭.
That sh**t is promising to be gooood: the Cambridges and Clarence House were perfectly functional in their synchronized demolition wish of Harry and Meghan, but now that their scapegoats are out of the picture, it went from rural rivals to royal rivals.
All I can think after reading this, as well as yesterday’s story about Charles’s odd selection of Father’s Day photos, is that…an actual family wouldn’t have to passive-aggressively message each other via the tabloids simply to communicate with one another. This is just so pitiful!

Yesterday the Fail dug up and republished that photo of Kate with her hair extension showing from way back when. Kate tried to cover it up by saying it was a childhood surgery scar (pause for laughter) which has never been seen or heard about since. Surely that was a message from her loving in-laws to remind her that they have the key to the closet storing all the Wails’ skeletons.

Will(& his wife) is actively trying to leapfrog over his father with the help of the press and successfully pushing him off the front pages but I’m sure C still prefers this to H but cause at least W isn’t “letting the side down”.
I wonder if this is W&K’s plan until C kicks the bucket. Just continue to push them off the front pages and dwarf his reign. The press finds C&C incredibly dull and boring & they’re not well liked by the gp. It’d be pretty easy to continue stepping on their news cycle.
William obviously timed this deliberately to overshadow the Trooping but also did it in a very clever way….the overlap with Father’s Day and his birthday tomorrow makes it less obvious to many that he is trying to overshadow Charles.
Is this about the Middleton articles? I dont think so, i think we would have gotten immediate pushback from KP on those if William had a big problem with them. I really think this is just about trying to ruin his father’s first Trooping.
Because the thing is, these things should not matter. There is enough press coverage for both charles and william. But we all know this matters a great deal to Charles and William absolutely knows that and absolutely knows how this is going over in BP/CH.
We are in for it with CRex and Cams wanting headlines and front page photos as they do all the royal “firsts” as King and Queen throughout the upcoming months. Meanwhile, Will and Kate have gone rogue. Remember they skipped CRex’s first Christmas lunch for the extended family as well, the one they always went to when Betty was here?
Now that the coronation and the first trooping and the first Ascot as monarch are done, CRex and Cams have the whole, long boring summer to get back at their wayward heirs.

It’s so much more fun to watch the battle when I don’t care about either side. Interesting difference in strategies – W&K are more bold and aggressive, C&C are passive and sneaky. And it’ll be interesting to see how the media deals with it. Before, it was easy to all join in hating Meghan, but now will they take sides?

If I understand correctly, prior to Charles becoming king, William (and Kate/kids) were almost totally reliant on him for money, correct? But now that he is POW and controls the duchy of Cornwall money, he is much less reliant on daddy dearest?
I think some of this is simply a middle finger to Charles of “I don’t have to coordinate with you or play your game where I can only do X so as not to overshadow you.” For W and K who are both lazy AF, I don’t think it’s about doing more, I think it’s about doing it whenever they want on their own schedule. I think they’ve always kind of done that (the coordination is clearly always lacking) but I think there is more behind it now. Which then the only way for Charles to “punish” him is through the tabloids (so healthy, what a relationship), which Harry outed in Spare. So when Charles (or Camilla since she’s his enforcer) inevitably does that, many people will take note and be reminded how much of a dogshit father Chucky is.
I think W/K suck, don’t get me wrong, but this is funny and has the vibes of a power play that will make Charles stomp his feet in rage which is very funny to me.
BitsyCS, That is a good point: the financial dependency of the royals on (the queen and) KC before W became PoW most likely led to deep resentment. KC probably used it as a means of control, which is now leading to W&K taking revenge.
Charles definitely used it as a means of control. Just look at how he cut Harry off when he left the Firm.
Like you bitsycs, I’m not sure how right Harry was about Chuck using it to limit Willy and Kate’s workload. They seemed fine with not working often. But they likely wanted control over when and how they worked without repercussion, and this is the middle finger.
It’s hilarious to watch the tantrum over it, especially given how much PW and Kate were given to live under that control. They barely worked; had the largest apartment on KP (grander than the one Chuck and Di had, I believe); and a giant country house at Sandringham. Kate spent tens of thousands a year on clothes, extensions, and surgery/injections. William was given his very own helicopter. William and Kate wanted Harry and Meghan gone, and Charles (and Camilla) helped deliver on that.
But now they’re a bit drunk on power and money and out for revenge because they had to ask for their largesse. It’s fun to watch play out.

I’ve had all my pocorn ready for Chucky vs. Willy on the tabloid press for a while and it looks like it’s getting closer and closer.
Technically, Eden IS right about Chuck providing social housing on duchy land. He’s just not known for it because it was more about playing around with his own urban planning initiatives than providing shelter for people. Poundbury and that other settlement he was building–I can’t remember the name of it–has social housing mixed in with private housing so that the two are indistinguishable.
I have a feeling that when William says social housing will built in the Duchy of Cornwall, he’s talking about more of those pre-planned units, since those developments aren’t finished yet. He’s going to use something that was already in progress and say that he’s ramping up work on it or increasing it by X percentage and take credit for it. Then, he will fail to follow through, but no one will call him out on it.
And he definitely timed this interview just to tick off his father. I’m now starting to think he was late to the cost-a-nation on purpose.
He could partner with Brad Pitt to build sustainable housing (to be read with sarcasm)
Simple problem to solve, Charles. Return The Duchy of Cornwall to the Treasury and put William on your payroll.
Another way is centralise all PR under Buckingham Palace in order to reduce staffing and administration cost and bring Kensington Palace under your control,
Sorry @noor,, I did not see your comment when I made mine above. This was tried by Geidt with disastrous results. KP simply refused to play along. When William digs in his heels neither Charles nor the Queen ever had the nerve to stand up to him. Geidt was ultimately forced out by Charles. He was let go around late 2017 but stayed on through the Sussexes wedding.
The funny thing is Charles and William (and their wives) teamed up against Harry and Meghan. It was the very definition of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”.
In this case, the enemy (William) of my enemy (HM) is my (Charles) friend.
The problem with that strategy is after enemy #2 has been vanquished/left the war, the enemy alliance has to determine how to treat each other.
Option 1. Charles and William bond over their anger of HM, discover they have a lot in common, and they decide to move forward with a united alliance.
Option 2. Charles and William still can’t stand each other and with HM gone the antagonism between C and W bubbles back to the surface and they go back to war against each other.
Option 1 requires self reflection and genuine respect of each other. Since that isn’t going to happen option 2 is the only recourse they can go with.
Add to that a very hungry and willing press corp who desperately want to get in on the monarchy’s grift and make that sweet, shiny money and you’ve got circus levels of entertainment.
So buckle up, babies, #stupidroyalssummer and the rest of this year is going to be a bumpy ride for Windsors vs. the Wales.
I, for one, will be front and center to watch them tear each other down.

Charles deserves everything Cain will throw at him. He chose Cain over able now he’s stuck with him. Charles has Cain in London(standing behind him with a knife) while Able is in Montecito being a good son. The drama between the top 4 royals is going to be fun to watch. Hopefully H&M get left all the way out of the drama, they deserve a break. Let the games begin.

I’ve long said all this ‘first as king’ stuff and ‘first as POW’ stuff is just ridiculous. Charles has been riding a horse in the trooping parade for decades. Ditto going to this Garter business. And Ascot. It’s just stupid to go on about William or Kate stealing his thunder. Same for William, he’s been to lots of trooping before, lots of Garter events (whatever the heck they do there), and lots of Ascots. ‘First as POW’ really doesn’t matter a whit. Same event, same William. Rinse and repeat.
As many have noted here, more than one thing can happen in a day & we have the mental capacity to take it all in. What I find more interesting is all the talk about what William will do during his reign as king, as though Charles is a mere placeholder. That is far more insidious than stepping on Charles’ news cycle.
KFC has a HUGE private fortune left to him by QE2. I don’t think I’d torque off KFC too much if I was Fails. KFC can do whatever he wants with that fortune. Something to think about.
Frankly, I think KFC should make whatever financial arrangements that he wants to, make a WRITTEN agreement with Fails and then let Fails be the Reagent. Fails will make a really bad King and I think everyone knows that. It would bring solace to KFC in his twilight years to watch how poorly Fails does.
Also, IF there was to be a divorce, it would really anger Fails if he’s stuck with Wails forevermore.
I too wish for fun and games for this impending spectacle/shit show between the last 4 standing. However, Charles is forever a coward in addition to being mean, indifferent, petty, cruel and a murderer (yes, I said it).
