Yesterday we heard that Madonna had to be hospitalized after being found unresponsive and that she was in the ICU for a serious bacterial infection. It sounded touch and go for her and she had to be intubated at one point. Thankfully she recovered enough to go home and is on the mend, according to her manager, Guy Oseary, and her friend Debi Mazar. Madonna has been preparing for a 40 date tour, which has been postponed so she can recover.
TMZ reports that Madonna had a low grade fever for a month before her medical crisis and that she’s been urged to rest. People close to her are said to be worried that she’s going to keep pushing herself so that she can start her tour as soon as possible. There must be enormous pressure for her to pull this off with so much at stake. Perhaps in response to those stories, People has a quote from a source that Madonna is resting as per doctor’s orders.
Madonna is focused on her recovery following a scary hospitalization over the last several days due to a “serious bacterial infection.”
Now back in her N.Y.C. home, “she’s feeling better and following doctor’s orders and resting,” a source close to the Queen of Pop, 64, tells PEOPLE exclusively.
On Wednesday, Madonna’s longtime manager Guy Oseary revealed the singer entered the ICU on June 24 after developing a “serious bacterial infection.”
“Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected,” wrote Oseary on his Instagram account. “At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour.”
In that same story, People had a quote Madonna gave in late 2020 saying she stayed in shape by sheer force of will and that “I don’t believe in limitations.” She’s so used to being in peak physical shape and pushing herself that it must be hard for her to recognize when she’s sick and needs to take a break. I really hope she recovers and goes easier on herself. It sounds like we could have lost her and I’m so relieved she’s OK now.
I didn’t know Madonna had hip replacement last year.
Me neither, but I’m sure she didn’t want anyone to know.
This is giving me Michael Jackson flashbacks. I remember he too was planning for a big tour and was feeling enormous pressure to pull it off even though he wasn’t feeling physically up to it. It resulted in him making the fatal decision to take propofal so he could sleep.
MJJ as well as Prince—who’d had hip surgery, was in chronic pain, got addicted to pain killers, and ODed. Madonna is messing with her face too much too, like MJJ. What is it with the superstars of that era?
I don’t think it’s the era. I think it’s the work and make money no matter what it takes out of you culture. It’s just easier to bounce back when you’re younger. We’ll see this with the younger generations soon enough.
MJ is a complicated case. They’re all complicated, in their own ways. MJ never really hit middle age, but Madonna and Prince put their bodies through so much, every night on stage. It’s no surprise that they suffered for it. But it is really sad. Like them or not, they are performers who put everything they have into their work.
Prince used to jump off the grand piano onto the stage in heels. Madonna is an incredibly athletic performer. For a good example check out her super bowl halftime show – second only to Prince’s, if you ask me – both are up on yt.
Madonna is a complicated person and while I may roll my eyes at her, she has my respect. I was actually expecting to roll my eyes at her halftime show when I watched it live and I came away with total respect.
I really hope they let her rest and truly recover before hitting the road. Touring is exhausting.
Seems like a fast discharge from ICU to home the next day?
I suppose she can get the best at home care.
Why would she let a low-grade fever go on for a month?!? A fever means your body is fighting something. Left to fester long enough, common UTIs can go septic and kill you.
Glad she is better.
Also, memories of Jim Henson. People get so used to working while sick that they don’t recognize when they are seriously ill.
Overdose cover-up.
I 100% believe this was an overdose cover up. That is an incredibly quick step down from a nearly fatal infection to suddenly being home. I am sure she can very afford to have the very best health care in the comfort of her home, but I would’ve thought she would still be on IV antibiotics at this time and doctors would be reluctant to let her leave the hospital.
I mean its actually a really easy setup to do IV antibiotics at home for regular poor people. Plus depending on the stability of the patient it’s better to go home cuz hospitals are bacteria wonderlands.
I just think she’s old. She’s had multiple health issues over the last few decades especially broken bones and she pushes her body to the extreme. Nevermind the plastic surgeries which are still surgeries that come with many risks. A bacterial infection sounds perfectly plausible. And actually sounds more plausible then drug overdose even if she’s been doing drugs recreationally for years.
Michael Jackson died pushing himself while preparing for a tour (using sleep aids—a doctor, to help him at least get “rest” each day). Madonna’d better watch herself. Whatever she is doing, it’s not the solution.
Madge is gonna Madge… but I pity her/sympathize. When I was in my 20s and in grad school (while working full time), I ignored a UTI until it got to my kidneys (told myself I was too busy to be sick). It wasn’t until my fever started raging and I stopped making sense that friends intervened and took me to the ER. Ended up being an overnight stay on an IV. Shit happens when people push themselves too hard/have perfectionist tendencies.
lizbert, yes to all you say. Sometimes people make poor decisions for whatever reasons. I know I do. Hopefully these decisions don’t end up ending your life, but especially under stress, I know I have made completely awful decisions. It happens! Get well, Madonna. Take care of yourself.
