On June 24 Madonna’s manager Guy Oseary shared on Instagram that Madonna had been hospitalized for a serious bacterial infection, requiring her to spend several days in the ICU. The situation seemed quite dire, with reports that her family had gathered because they were so worried she might die. Kaiser speculated (and I agree) that they probably wouldn’t have made any kind of announcement but for the 40 date Celebration tour she was due to begin in mid July. By the end of June Madonna was cleared to go home to continue her recovery, but there were concerns that she would start to do too much too soon to get the tour back on track. Now Madonna has taken to Instagram herself to thank everyone for their well wishes and to confirm that her Celebration tour would begin in October:
Madonna is rescheduling the North American leg of her world tour following her recent hospitalization.
The Grammy winner announced the news in an Instagram post on Monday.
“Thank you for your positive energy, prayers and words of healing and encouragement. I have felt your love,” she wrote, “I’m on the road to recovery and incredibly grateful for all the blessings in my life.”
She went on to write, “My first thought when I woke up in the hospital was my children. My second thought was that I did not want to disappoint anyone who bought tickets for my tour. I also didn’t want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to create my show. I hate to disappoint anyone.
“My focus now is my health and getting stronger and I assure you, I’ll be back with you as soon as I can,” she added.
Madonna stated that she will kick off the tour internationally in October.
CNN has reached out to her representatives for further comment.
Last month, Madonna’s longtime manager, Guy Oseary, announced she was in the ICU after developing a “serious bacterial infection.”
Madonna’s “Celebration” tour was scheduled to kick off July 15 in Vancouver, Canada.
In a statement following Madonna’s post, Live Nation confirmed all the North American dates of our tour have been postponed.
“Fans are encouraged to hold onto their tickets as they will be valid for the new dates once announced,” the statement read.
So the North American leg that was supposed to be over the next few months is not rescheduled yet. My question is, is three months enough time to recover? I’m really asking here. As a performer Madonna has been in great shape all her life. Physically I think that will only help her recovery, except if she pushes too hard, and unfortunately she seems very much the type to do just that. A photo emerged this week of Madonna out in New York, but you really can’t tell much from the one shot other than she’s donning a fabulous sunhat. I hope the people around her love her enough to push back if she starts revving up too fast. But for the love of the Material Girl, when she does return to the tour, do not throw shit at her onstage.
My first thought was also that a few months just does not seem like enough. It also seems like it would be better to play it safe than to have to reschedule again.
As for throwing stuff on stage, I just don’t get it. Concert tickets are outrageously expensive so I assume those who still go are real fans. Why would a fan throw something??
Oh, and with all of the bad glasses that celebs have been wearing, Madonna gets it right.
@Josephine
+1. I would be ready to fight if I spent hundreds of dollars on a ticket to see my favorite artist, only for the concert to end early bc some fool decided to be “funny” and throw something on stage. I’m starting to think that ignorance is a contagion amongst some young people.
Glad she’s recovering, she was one of my favorites before she hit mainstream and her hits kept coming. I think this rush to return to her tour is another sign that Madonna refuses to accept that she is getting older. Listen to your body Madge – it will tell you if it’s too soon.
I also find it strange that they used Narcon to treat a bacterial infection. I hope the infection wasn’t a result of more plastic surgery.
Narcan is going to be an automatic application with EMS or in the ER if the person is unconscious or close to it. They’ll check that, blood oxygen, blood sugar – those are easy and high yield to check for unconscious people.
Bacteria and fungal cultures are going to take a long time to come back and they’ll guess based on the white blood cell count which can come back quickly and if there’s a fever, they’ll start an antibiotic that hits a lot then dial it in when cultures come back but that will be around 2-3 days later.
You have to guess early if someone is in sepsis because you’re trying to aggressively load in fluids right up to the breaking point for the heart and lungs, so that’s ICU placement.
I did not hear a clear timeline in exactly -when- the narcan was administered. If it was in the ICU, not home or the ER, then that’s stranger. If it was home or the ER, then that’s much more standard.
Also, we should remember, “bacterial infection” was put out by her team, it may be true and it may not, they didn’t say how she acquired the bacterial infection which could be a mundane pathway or it could be quite sensational. That could be fiction and we wouldn’t know it.
Also, I think it’s lovely that nasal narcan is going to be available over the counter this fall in many states and we should all have a packet of it in our bags. Also the middle/high school/college kids should all have it in their bags. I have prescribed that for kids who go to parties, the parent says “well they can’t use it on themselves,” and I say that that kid is going to advertise to their friends they have it and so kid might benefit from it, but also it sucks to be next to the person who dies as well.
@ Josephine, I don’t think it’s long enough either. As @ Chantal stated, listen to your body Madge. Hopefully she seeks medical evaluation before she begins the tour to ensure that she is ready.
Totally agree. Madonna was an influencer before influencers were a thing. I would love for her to come forward as someone who prioritizes taking care of herself. So many women run themselves to the ground and we need a somewhat older woman who sets a new standard of being strong and gentle to one’s self.
I know she had a hip replacement about a year ago. her last tour before that she couldn’t dance at all, and at times it seemed like she could barely move. She hobbled around like a 90 year old. It was really sad.
I worry that she got hooked on painkillers then, and this whole episode sounds like she overdosed. There might have been other stuff going on too, but “serious bacterial infection” and a rigorous road tour don’t sound compatible at least in my (somewhat educated) opinion.
The idea they would use narcan for a severe bacterial infection is a load of BS and suspicious it was mentioned. They did not list the antibiotics that she was started on.
I don’t doubt she had a serious infection, there is no reason to, but the use of narcan was either due to an opiate overdose complication or because there was a possibility that was the case. I lean toward “getting the news out with a nonsense reason before someone else does”
I am not her doctor, so I could be totally wrong, but that doesn’t add up. Opioid dependence is not shameful. Coolio, Mac Miller, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jackson, Prince, Petty. thats off the top of my head
Well there was one paper in 83 and another in 89 that suggested narcan to treat hypotension in septic shock.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2625808/
But… there looks to be a paucity of papers since then.
The narcan was probably given to her by the EMTs as she was found at home and non-responsive, and the algorithm for treatment in case like that when there were no witnesses or evidence to provide any indication of why the patient is non-responsive is to suspect OD and treat with narcan.
The abstract you linked is from 1989 and it’s a study of only 5 patients so pretty meaningless in the scheme of things. Her BP may have rebounded quickly with fluids alone or she may have needed inotropic support as well which are standard of care in this situation, they wouldn’t have used narcan for it. [If it matters to you, I used to conduct clinical trials for meds to treat sepsis/septic shock (and multi organ failure)/Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome]
I mentioned on a previous post about Madonna that I saw her on Jimmy Fallon a few years back and he asked her what she liked as far as substances (she said no to everything he asked) and she said she likes opiates. Look at her pupils in the newest Insta post. Just like with Prince the last several years of his life. Teeny pin point pupils. I worry, I don’t want Queen Madonna to die too young. I hope she is ok. And I agree w/ what you say Sandra, the narcan comment was a dead give away.
@POTTYMOUTHPUP
I was trying to say there is poor research support for doing narcan for sepsis, and no one has bothered with this for over thirty years.
I think we’re on the same page.

Bacterial infection? Yeah, right. More like overdose.
