Prince William screwed up and it’s been glorious to watch as Britain’s national press ripped him a new one. The whole thing was just so typical of William in particular – he demanded a fancy title (Football Association President) and thought the job would be all fun. Attending football matches and hanging out with footballers. He should have been gleeful at the chance to use the Lionesses’ successes to embiggen himself, after all, they’re winning on his watch. But unfortunately, William is too lazy to travel to Australia to cheer on the Lionesses – the British papers were openly talking about how he refused to cut his summer holiday off to travel, and even royalists were bitching him out. He’s come across as too lazy to work, too sexist to support the women’s national team and too nativist to travel to a Commonwealth country. There must have been Panic! At the Palace, because William forced his daughter to make a lil’ hostage video with him:

You know what would have been even better? Single-dad William taking Charlotte to Australia to cheer on the Lionesses in person. But that would have required more thought and effort than a low-quality video filmed on someone’s janky phone. As for William’s squirrelly excuse about the environmental reasons why he wouldn’t fly to Australia, i News did a thoughtful analysis to prove why Peg is full of it.
The Prince of Wales would have increased the Royal family’s travel emissions by just 0.1 per cent if he had chosen to fly on a commercial flight to Sydney for the Women’s World Cup Final.
Prince William has come under fire from politicians and England supporters for deciding not to travel to Australia for the final, despite being president of the Football Association. It is understood that Prince William, who has sent a message of congratulations to England’s Lionesses, has decided against travelling because of the environmental impact of flying such a long distance for such a short visit.
Flying to the other side of the world could have added 3 tonnes or more of carbon dioxide to his personal footprint. The average UK citizen emits around 13 tonnes per year.
Based on figures for a premium cabin flight from Heathrow to Sydney, via Singapore, Prince William would have produced 3.3 tonnes of emissions. For the Royal family as a whole in 2022, travel emissions reached 2,857 tonnes.
People act like William taking a commercial flight would be so destructive to his (highly selective) image as an environmentalist. Like… those commercials flights will continue with or without William. I bet he could have easily found five or six tickets on last-minute commercial flights to Sydney on Thursday or Friday of last week. But again, that would have taken planning, effort, consideration and professionalism.

I live near one of their residences, the amount of noise the royal helicopters generate is awful. I am so sorry. That is incredibly inconsiderate. I have lived close to military airfields all my life and they never build military housing in flight paths for that exact reason. Unless those are rescue/hospital helicopters they should NOT be disturbing residential neighborhoods. The BRF has the money and resources to build a helipad farther out and drive to it.
Helena I am sorry to hear about your having to get chemo twice a month. I know through an aunt, MIL and friend how extremely draining and overwhelming it can be. Regardless of how often you go it can take over your life. I pray that you have an abundance of love and support surrounding you and that your healing and recovery will be just around the corner 🙏. @LRB – This is the 2nd time this year a Spanish royal has brought luck to a Spanish athlete. King Felipe was there when Carlos Alcaraz won the mens final at Wimbledon this year, saying that he seems to win whenever his Monarch attends his matches (even thou it was only the 2nd time that it had happened).
Knowing how slow the royals are to consider any change as necessary I think the fact that this is the first women’s world cup the be getting a decent amount of coverage, matches properly televised, etc. has completely passed them by. To all those asking why William only used (and I DO mean “used”) his daughter for this video meant to encourage the women’s football team, and those asking the reasonable question of why he didn’t include his sons as well: If you think about it from William’s selfish point of view, this gesture wasn’t about encouraging his country’s football team, it was mainly about getting William off the hook and providing him with a good press cycle to wash away the sour taste of the bad one he’s been subjected to. So, in his mind, you bring the girl to show that “some of your best friends are female.” If you think about it from the royals’ performative bent, then what he did makes sense. Now, if this had been about a genuine effort to cheer the women’s football team, then the more the merrier and he would have had all his kids and maybe a few others.

My 7 year old son watched the game, admittedly while also playing on his Switch but he did enthusiastically cheer them on. He was disappointed when England lost but took it well, I told his dad (a white Brit) not to be a sore loser and to model good sportsmanship.
It looks like this was filmed at Anmer because of the bench. If they’re on luxury foreign holiday somewhere? They didn’t mention which team the Lionesses were playing. This generic video could have been made two days or two months ago. Back when, as you noted Becks1, he basically told the team he wouldn’t attend no matter how well they did.
This is an excellent point @notasugarhere. Here we are all thinking it was filmed because of the dragging but these little videos are part of his playbook and could have been filmed whenever. There is no proof he is at Anmer watching with the family, (again, using their existence as a reason to ditch his duties.) So where is he?

Hahaha. My 24 year old “boy” has been glued to all of the women’s game in the past couple of weeks. He has as much, sometimes even more, interest in women’s football than the men’s.
My 81 year old dad has been watching the tournament and his comment about it was ‘the lassies always play a good game’ and went on to say they are always better to watch than the men. He said it was a really good game and the Lionesses played very well but the Spanish girls were better and deserved to win.
The women’s game has something that is lacking in the men’s – that desire, teamwork and burning ambition to win. The men get all the money, opportunities and support; the women get scraps.
The fact that his kids are already so prominently used in video like this for royal family mea-culpas is stunning to me. I mean, I know back in the day William and Harry had to do the standard photo-ops, but this is something else.
It also strikes me as very unprofessional? If someone else was President if the FA and couldn’t make it, they wouldn’t drag their children into their apology videos!

It’s a ridiculous excuse. Protocol can be changed at any time, and the late Queen frequently did so. The press here (UK) have really stuck it to William about this, and it’s been really interesting to see. It’s clear that they’re not buying his excuses.
I do believe that there are many things about the BRF that the press are not “allowed” to talk about (many of them concerning William), whether due to editorial policy, “special agreements”, or legal injunctions. But this frustrates a lot of journalists who know what’s really going on. So when they do have “permission” to report something (like here, with William’s obvious lack of interest in English women’s football), they really take the opportunity to stick the boot in.

I can’t remember the BRF ever supporting the British Invictus Game participants or winners. The Games’ association with Harry appears to make all the participants personae non grata in the view of the Royals, I guess. There is something so weird about the video. ‘Sorry WE can’t be there’; what’s with the ‘we’? And claiming they ‘can’t’ be there is inaccurate as of course they can – but it would eat into PW’s extended holiday time and he can’t have that.
The whole thing seems so stiff and unnatural, and amateurish. I thought only the reigning monarch used that. However making this video with his daughter implies they are the ‘we’ referred to. This effort was just so unprofessional – it looks staged and there is zero affection conveyed, from the fact they don’t even look at each other to PW’s little finger tap to make her talk on cue. They both look as if they would rather be somewhere else, with someone else, doing something else.
I am not saying there is no affection there…. just that it doesn’t come across in this video and it should have done. If you are going to produce a video why not ensure it is a professional one and that it is conveying a positive message you want to convey? If you are producing it to counteract accusations of not caring about the occasion, why would you not produce a video which conveys the message that you do in fact care?

Even if he didn’t want to travel to Australia (which is a huge PR mistake; he could have supported the Lionesses AND a Commonwealth country at the same time), he could have done other things. He could have “hosted” a viewing party at his local pub (you know, where he and the family regularly go for Sunday roasts LOL) or he could have invited his kids’ friends and their families to watch the game at one of the palaces. Congratulations to Spain on the win. Very well deserved. The way some people are twisting themselves in knots to justify William shirking his duty by skipping this game. This was a big deal. He could have glad handed with the players , joked around with the Queen of Spain and flown in a commercial flight. This was pure laziness and indifference. Meanwhile last week they were attacking Harry for showing up in Japan and Singapore for his charities, advocating for his causes, all while flying commercial.
