Jobson: Prince William is King Charles’s enforcer, not co-monarch

Robert Jobson is one of King Charles’s favored biographers/hagiographers. When Jobson speaks, you can tell he’s speaking for Charles and Camilla and giving their “perspective.” So it’s interesting to watch Jobson navigate the discussion of Charles’s first year on the throne, wanting to dutifully act as a stenographer to power, all while the monarchy is basically collapsing around him. Last week, Jobson had a lengthy piece in the Sun about the king’s big plans for his reign and how we shouldn’t pay attention to the huge raise Charles got or the fact that he’s a dogsh-t father. Some highlights:

A monarchy fit for purpose: His goal is to ensure the monarchy is “fit for purpose” by the time he hands over to Prince William, senior sources have told The Sun. That means a streamlined monarchy that works as a modern institution – with fewer working royals, less money spent on security, cuts to middle-ranking staff and more diversity. A well-placed source told me: “His Majesty believes that the monarchy needs to be a well-oiled, cost-effective machine with a clear purpose. One year into his reign he knows the buck stops with him and he is going to make sure he stamps his authority. Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth had her way of doing things, but The King has made it clear that while he respects tradition, he’s not afraid to make changes.”

State visits: I understand Charles will visit Australia next autumn ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa. The Australian Government will take the lead in planning the State visit as Charles is their King. They will have to pay for it too and such a visit doesn’t come cheap. When the Queen visited Australia in October 2011, her last official long-haul visit, the cost of her trip reportedly came to almost $1.74million (£890,000) but the bill included the charter of a plane for long-haul flights.

No more big events: Charles is keen to avoid more expensive showcase royal events. After the Platinum Jubilee, the Queen’s death and State Funeral and the Coronation, he will play down his landmark 75th birthday, with no big events planned. “For the King reducing the cost to the taxpayer and improving efficiency. He has set his mind on it and it will be done,” said one senior aid.

Firm on family issues: There were fewer royals on the main palace balcony for starters; only Charles’s team of working royals and his closest family. No Harry and Meghan, no disgraced Prince Andrew, Duke of York. Charles has dealt with both those issues firmly. He loves his son but won’t allow his petulant behaviour to undermine his reign. Disgraced Andrew too has not been allowed out of the deep freeze, although he is of course present at family gatherings as he was a Christmas at Sandringham and this summer at Balmoral. An insider said: “Talk of him allowing Andrew and Harry back into the royal fold is wide of the mark. Andrew is of course part of the family and will be at family gatherings. But no, he will not be making a comeback officially. That is not going to happen. There is very little communication with Harry. Time is a great healer, there needs to be more time.”

The Enforcers: Slowly but surely the King’s way is being introduced, with Queen Camilla, supported by Prince William, acting as his main enforcers. [Charles] has worked closely with his son and heir William to achieve this, but it is Charles calling the shots, not some kind of joint monarchy as has been wrongly suggested.

Staff issues: He is already making moves to axe middle-management staff – an estimated 20 per cent – to boost the Royal Household’s efficiency. And he also wants more diversity in the household, up to 20 per cent, with more people from ethnic minority backgrounds in senior positions. King Charles and Queen Camilla are determined to streamline staffing, where too many are doing similar jobs. Dozens will be affected.

The real estate: He also wants to reduce the number of houses in the royal portfolio and has reportedly asked Prince Andrew to move out of the Royal Lodge in Windsor. In March Harry and Meghan were also evicted from Frogmore Cottage as part of the plans.

Less security: He knows fewer royals means a cheaper security bill too. Queen Camilla, Charles’s enforcer at the palace, has already raised the matter of cuts personally with the Master of the Household, Vice-Admiral Sir Tony Johnstone-Burt. Camilla, like the King, believes the Royal Family must be seen to be in step with the times to flourish.

[From The Sun]

This is a deliberate fudge: “He also wants to reduce the number of houses in the royal portfolio… In March Harry and Meghan were also evicted from Frogmore Cottage as part of the plans.” Frogmore Cottage is still part of the Royal Windsor estate and the Sussexes were literally paying the lease, and they had paid for the extensive renovations on that dilapidated shack. Evicting the Sussexes didn’t stop Frogmore from being part of the real estate portfolio. All that’s happening now is that there are too many palaces and castles and not enough royals to fill them. Although it’s hilarious that even with all of those empty palaces, forts, castles, mansions, manor homes and cottages, Kate was still shunted off to one of the smallest houses on the Windsor estate. As for Charles’s “enforcers” – well, he just blew up William’s “king-in-training” PR, which is hilarious. But it really feels like Camilla is running the show all by herself.

But how are they reducing costs for the taxpayers? Money that is being saved from less staff and less security costs for extra family members is going where then? Where is that money being allocated? Bc the sovereign grant actually increased right? So again how is this saving money for the tax payers? It’s the deliberate lying that is happening. The deliberate misleading. And Jobson is dutifully helping with that.

      THIS!!!!

People are losing their jobs but where is that money going?

    • Megan says:

And who believes Charles won’t throw himself a huge birthday party for his 75th? Remember how the coronation was going to be low key?

    • SarahCS says:

They are not. They are just squirrelling more away in offshore accounts.

      • Eleanor says:

Im not sure what is going on but Charles usually looks so sad, Camilla looks like she wants to be anywhere but where she is, and Kate- I can’t put my finger on it but she doesn’t look like Kate. There is something missing.

    • Sunday says:

Exactly, Charles is “reducing costs” so he can keep more money for himself, period. It’s insane to me that this logic somehow evades the majority of Britain.

British media for literally 3+ decades: “Slimmed down monarchy! Slimmed down monarchy!”
Charles, king for 5 seconds with 4* less royals to pay for: “Give us more money!”
British government: “Righto, more money for your slimmed down monarchy, no these two ideas are not inherently dissonant, why do you ask?”

*The 4 are Harry & Meghan and the Queen & Philip. It’s 5 if you count Andrew, but he’s being “privately funded by the king” which is just more doublespeak bs that these grifters will never be held to account over, absolutely maddening.

  2. Enforcers? Is this a big hockey game? So Australia will foot the bill for Chuckles because it’s expensive and Chuckles doesn’t want to spend his money. What a joke. Bring the monarchy to an end and sell off all those empty palaces and give the money back to the taxpayers. I won’t hold my breath.

    • Elizabeth says:

You know who else uses enforcers? The Mafia, that’s who. Jobson admits that the Royal Family is no different from the mob. And weren’t there rumors that Prince William was fighting Charles regarding having an investiture as Prince of Wales? KCIII wanted one, and William didn’t because it meant that he had to do homework and learn some Welsh.

  3. ML says:

Right. So little bad KC has his wife and son as “enforcers?” To me “enforcer” sounds a bit like a security guard, bouncer, or goon.
No more big events…um, Jobbo must still remember that KC wanted a no-frills coronation and that morphed into one expensive beast, right? Frankly, from the outside, KC gets more money from the British taxpayers to fund less working royals and has cost the British taxpayers more money with special events. And opening Balmoral to the public longer does not decrease KC’s government funding.

  4. Amy Bee says:

All I get from this is it’s business as usual and it was so great that Harry and Meghan were evicted from Frogmore Cottage.

    • Jais says:

It is not painting Charles as softening towards Harry and wanting a stronger relationship with him that’s for sure. Considering it’s from Jobsen, this is likely the truer sentiment.

      • Couch Potato says:

The “Andrew is of course still part of the family” and then mention that he needs more time about Harry speaks volums. They’re sending a clear message; Harry isn’t family anymore.

  5. Minnieder says:

Lol at the pictures of baldy looking like a petulant child sitting on the naughty chair.

  6. ML says:

The staff: KC’s enforcer-wife allowed Ngozi Fulani to be mistreated by Susan Hussey at an event meant to support women. Susan Hussey was nominally let go, but she has returned (photographed the same day WanK drove Paedrew to church). Ngozi and Susan apologized to each other, in a clear travesty of justice.
Considering who works for the palace and who these people protect and the unusually close relationship they have with racist tabloids, is it crazy to ask what jobs they envision ethnic minority background people being promoted to? And will they increase ethnic minority staff as well?

  7. Becks1 says:

    Enforcing what???

And again, a streamlined monarchy means nothing if the SG isn’t reduced.

  8. MsIam says:

“He loves his petulant son”? So Harry standing up for his wife, kids and himself makes him petulant? No it means he’s not a crybaby who hides behind others. Harry has gone from strength to strength while Chuck keeps rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

  9. tamsin says:

Seeing Harry referred to as “petulant” infuriates me. There are no two more petulant people than Charles and William. Harry, has matured into a man who is self-disciplined and dignified. Harry is working with the international community this week- not the “king” and his petulant “heir” while their mouthpiece talks about making Australia pay for an expensive tour. And what does Australia get out of it, I ask.

  10. Athena says:

King Charles thinks the term “the buck stops here” means he gets all the money.

  11. Eurydice says:

Such interesting language. William the Enforcer means he has to do whatever Charles wants him to do and not go off on his own. Camilla, who is described twice as enforcer, is Charles’ hatchet woman – whether firing people or getting revenge through her attack dogs in the media.

  12. Well Wisher says:

This article reads like a Neo-conservative dream to discard ‘big government’ with talks of cuts and reduction of portfolio(s), like the reduction of governmental budgets……
It has a familiar feeling for someone who lived in a former colony, the way power is being wielded by the actual ruler(s)/gatekeeper(s).

I find the idea that Australia will have to pay for a state visit, interesting to the least….
Could this be a flex? If, so? Whom?

Why would Charles need an enforcer? Against whom? Is this the mafia??
    So much to unpack……

If William and Camilla are the enforcers? With evidence of their behaviour towards Harry and Meghan? How can this be construe as Charles’s love of Harry, it is, in fact quite the opposite…….

It reads like a hot mess, the environment seems quite uninviting for minorities.
Any talented minority worth their salt should avoid working in this environment, not because of potential biases, but dysfunction..

There is no clear mission statement for this organization that sees itself as a business…

Whereas it is a governmental entity….

  13. Saucy&Sassy says:

Enforcer? For KFC? Can anyone see Wont enforcing anything besides what he wants?

This is a bad look any way you slice it.
