I’m so happy to see Fantasia Barrino getting her flowers for The Color Purple, especially after everything she’s been through. Her Dolce & Gabbana gown was not one of my favorites, but that’s mostly due to the weird lilac chiffon skirt. Look at the second slide in her Instagram above. With just the velvet bodice and a white sequin skirt that dress would have been excellent but they added a lower skirt layer and it just looks silly. Fantasia was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy for The Color Purple. That category went to Emma Stone for Poor Things. I hope Fantasia is nominated for an Oscar.

Presenter Angela Bassett was also in Dolce & Gabbana, in a bombshell off the shoulder black velvet mermaid gown with full sleeve gloves. I wish she didn’t have to present with Jared Leto, their bit was so weird and poorly written, but I loved to see her on stage. 9-1-1 is coming to ABC on March 14 I can’t wait! Birthday present for me.
Elizabeth Banks was in a slinky black corseted Dolce & Gabanna with crystal embellishments. It looks super tight but it’s a great dress. I just wish she didn’t go with a wet look for her hair. That trend should have died out long ago.
Nominee Helen Mirren was in a two tone purple D&G. If you told me this was Valentino I would believe you, but Valentino does giant gowns better than this – it doesn’t need all that ruching or that overlay. She looks like she’s having fun at least.

The top is so old school glamour and the further you go down the worse it is.
The gloves look so good on her. It’s a shame about that skirt.
It looks like her blue skirt is falling down and we are seeing her white undergarment. Really odd design choice. From the waist up she looks great.
Now that is how you wear opera gloves. She looks gorgeous from the hips up. The lilac skirt- awful.
I actually would have preferred the lilac skirt without the white piece … she otherwise looked beautiful.
I usually love different/strange dresses, but i just dont get why they added the lower skirt! Fantasia looks great otherwise tho!
I feel like the “wet” hair look only really works if you have really long and thick hair, with short (especially blond) hair it just looks kinda dirty?
I wish Angela would star something else soon, great that she has her own starring show with 911, i just feel like shes too good for a show like that. (Obvi just my opinion, i have never liked series like 911, greys, csi or other network channel stables)
Also, havent gotten “Angela Basset did the thing” out of my head since i saw the clip again yesterday
Oops, I totally assumed Helen’s look was Valentino! I must admit, I’m tired of this giant slouchy robe/cape situation…While admittedly it looks comfortable, it’s just been so overdone at this point that it’s not striking anymore.
Re: Angela and Jared, oh my gosh, so many of the presenter bits were SO badly written (and often also poorly delivered)!! Do they think they can get away with lame writing because most of the room is tipsy?!
I hate that Angela got stuck presenting with him, but I guess the organizers figured that she would not put up with his crap. Ugh.
I wish viola Davis was there so we could’ve gotten reaction shots from her when he talked about his method acting. He was such a twat during suicide squad. Wished they’d shown us Margot Robbie at least.
I will admit. I liked Jared joker in suicide squad. I get what he was going for.
His method acting is ridiculous.
In his defense he said his part was suppose to be way longer and he shot a lot of footage. In the end, He was in the movie for like 10 minutes so all his behind the scenes stuff just seems criminal.
I wanted Jared Leto to shut the eff up and let Angela Bassett do the talking.
I actually love what Helen Mirren wore. The color is really fun and she looks good in anything.

I feel like the problem with Fantasia Barrino skirts is that the 2 ideas don’t work well together. It needed to either be a white sequined skirt close fitting all the way down, or a classic mermaid in the white sequined fabric OR it could be a full almost into ball gown lilac/grey chiffon skirt without the white sequined part at all.
I’m so happy to see Fantasia having success again. She’s SO talented. I still watch her legendary performance of “Summertime” from American Idol, from time to time on YouTube, and it always moves me to tears.
I know Helen’s cape and the dress beneath it were not supposed to match, but they were so close in color that I think they clashed. Each shade of lavender/lilac went with the periwinkle dress, but they didn’t go with each other.
Fantasia dress didn’t need the blue part. It looks like a skirt that fell down. Or D&G should have removed the white part and hiked up the blue.
Elizabeth Banks looked amazing in that dress walking out on stage. Unfortunately, she went with that wet look hair which does not do anyone any favors.
