Jif has just announced a brand new flavor combination they’re rolling out: Peanut Butter & Chocolate. And my honest reaction is… have they really not tried this before?? Peanut butter and chocolate are such a natural pairing! They’re yin & yang, cookies & cream, Astaire & Rogers. Superb on their own but in combination, sublime. Obviously, this is also Jif coming for the Nutella market. They’re even bragging that their new peanut butter-chocolate combo has “50% less sugar than the leading hazelnut spread with cocoa.” Oh snap, the gauntlet has been thrown! This is shaping up to be an excellent food fight.
Jif is releasing a new product that peanut butter fans have already proven to go nuts over.
The household brand revealed on Wednesday, May 1, that it’s adding a sweeter spread to its lineup of nut butter, which it described as its “biggest flavor innovation in 10 years,” seemingly hinting at the 2014 release of Jif’s tub of Whipped Peanut Butter and S’mores.
While there’s no marshmallow or graham cracker flavor in its latest release, the new addition would likely be lip-smacking delicious on both. Now introducing: Jif Peanut Butter & Chocolate.
Said to be similar to other cocoa spreads (like Nutella), Jif’s version uses peanut butter instead of hazelnut. It also contains “50 percent less sugar than the leading hazelnut spread with cocoa,” according to a press release.
While you may not want to use this in your peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, we’re told it’s great as a dip for fruits and pretzels or as a topping on your waffles, pancakes, French toast and even oatmeal!
Amazon shoppers will notice that Jif Peanut Butter & Chocolate Flavored Spread is listed on the online retail platform in Jar (15oz) and To-Go Cups (1.1 oz), but it’s already sold out.
Those looking to find it at their local grocery store will have to keep their eyes open for it, as the new product will roll out to all major national and regional retailers throughout the spring and summer.
“Jif Peanut Butter & Chocolate Flavored Spread combines the irresistible deliciousness of Jif Peanut Butter that our fans love with the sweet flavor of chocolate, striking the perfect balance of salty and sweet,” said Nicole Massey, VP of marketing at Jif’s parent company, J.M. Smucker Co., in a statement. “It’s lower in sugar, making it a permissible indulgence that can transform a simple snack into a mouthwatering treat in no time at all.”
The biggest flavor innovation in 10 years!!! What a time to be alive! LOL. I’m still chuckling over Jif hyping this as the “healthy” chocolate spread option. Feels kind of like they’re trying to have their condiment and eat it too. But no matter, we’re still the winners here. And I know exactly what my first use will be: I have perfected my grandmother’s peanut butter blossom cookie recipe (if I do say so myself). It’s a peanut butter dough cookie rolled in sugar, and then you press a Hershey’s kiss into the center. I mean, this new peanut butter-chocolate spread was made to be used for these cookies, right? I wonder if it will make them a bit too sweet, if the balance between the salty peanut butter and the sugary chocolate kiss will be thrown off. But that is why I must experiment! This is, after all, a science article.

Yes, for science! Please report back on your cookie results. PB and chocolate is my all-time favorite candy combo, but I love PB in all things.
I’m interested, too, because I think the chocolate in the peanut butter may somehow mess with the consistency of the cookie. Ooh, maybe it makes a gooiey-er cookie! But then it’s really not the same cookie, is it? Better living through science!
I love Nutella but if this chocolate spread doesn’t break me out, I’m buying multiple jars!
I love Nutella but as soon as I realized how many calories it has I stopped eating it. I love salted roasted peanuts but I dislike peanut butter lol. The thought of tasting peanut butter chocolate combo makes me cringe. There must be something wrong with my taste buds.
Yes, yes there is. 😉
Smuckers used to make the Goober Peanut Butter Chocolate stripe, not sure if they do any more but there have been peanut butter chocolate spreads made before this
They did that with chocolate? I only remember the peanut butter & grape jelly combo, Smuckers being known for its jams & jellies.
they did. apparently, they discontinued it in 2012. I found a pic on Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/pin/smuckers-goober-chocolate-jar–296111744219822629/
Maybe Trader Joe’s will bring back their chocolate hazelnut spread. It was better than Nutella. It’s funny, I like chocolate, but not really chocolate flavored things.
I’m like that with apples; I like apples, but not apple-flavored anything.
Not a fan of Nutella. It just doesn’t taste like chocolate at all to me. I do wish Jif would bring back their Cinnamon Peanut Butter! That combo ruined plain peanut butter for me, and then they discontinued it! 😢
They have done this before! They used to have little individual servings of a chocolate peanut butter that I found at dollar tree- thus starting a love of it with my oldest autistic son. Then we couldn’t find it anymore. So I found a brand at Kroger that makes it- Peanut Butter & co. Thank goodness because it’s the only topping my son will eat on his safe food of waffles. We will have to try this one too!
I’m pretty sure there used to be a pb&c product. And this won’t replace Nutella because peanuts don’t taste the same as hazelnuts.
Agreed. I have had several different choc/pb spreads and they are not the same as Nutella.
I first had Nutella when I was an exchange student in Germany in the 70s. It’s been soo popular here in US for decades. Wonder what took them so long??
I vote tahini spread with chocolate for the win.
As someone who has never gotten on the Nutella bandwagon due to a nearly visceral distaste for anything hazelnut* I’d give this a try.
* possibly due to an unfortunate incident years ago involving Frangelico.
Goodness! 😳
Oooooh, the possibilities! Maybe use a mini pretzel instead of a Hershey’s kiss, to cut the sweetness?
That’s what I was thinking, something salty, like even a peanut. The thing with the Kiss, though, is that it melts & adds a certain gooeyness, not sure what would work instead. Maybe a salted caramel?
Sprinkle course sea salt on the Hershey kiss to cut the sweetness.
Of ‘course’ I notice my typo after it’s been published. Coarse sea salt…of course.
This on an apple?! Yes, please!
Oh, I’m going to try it alright! And I just checked online, peanuts are listed as the first ingredient, then sugar. With Nutella, sugar is the first ingredient (which makes it so great on something salty, like a cracker). Yeah, I’m checking for this the next time I’m in the grocery store!
