The Cannes Film Festival kicked off on Tuesday with its first premiere, an opening ceremony, a press conference for the Cannes jury and more. Last year’s Cannes was a snooze, almost like they were trying to be controversial in the wrong direction (a Johnny Depp premiere) and trying to mute the one thing which people enjoy about Cannes: the glamour and fashion. This year, the festival put three very fashionable women on the jury: Greta Gerwig (she’s the jury president), Lily Gladstone and Eva Green. On the first night, Meryl Streep was honored and several amazing French actresses came out (Lea Seydoux, Juliette Binoche). The festival is really trying to bring eyes back to the south of France.
So, let’s get to the fashion. On opening night, Greta wore Saint Laurent – a very smart gown in a great color. Hours beforehand, Greta’s photocall look became THE topic of conversation on Fashion Twitter – she wore a Maison Margiela dress with a corset bodice and overdrawn hips. I kind of hate that dress, but I love the Saint Laurent.
Lily Gladstone wore Gucci and Eva Green wore Armani to the opening night. I imagine both women have their pick of designer frocks for the festival, and I’m excited to see what Lily brings out. This Armani on Eva is a bit different – usually she goes for goth-glam, this seems more goth-princess.
Meryl Streep looked amazing in Dior. Seriously, what a fantastic dress for her.
Juliette Binoche also wore Dior Haute Couture – I like the dress a lot and her face card is eternal. But the wet-look hair is killing me.
My least favorite look of Day 1 was Léa Seydoux in Louis Vuitton. Blah.

I like lea’s LV dress, I just feel we’ve seen it a dozen times before.
For all the rest – I really love them. Usually with these kinds of posts or events I love some, hate some, but I really like all of these. Even Greta’s striped photocall dress – it seems very fun and summery to me (but I haaaate those shoes.)
i also hate the wet hair look but besides that Juliette Binoche looks amazing. And that may be one of the best dresses I’ve seen Lily G. wear. Just stunning.
Meryl also looks great – this dress is in her comfort zone but still stands out.
The Maison Margiela signature split toe enrages me every time I see it lol. I just can’t. I did love that dress, but I think we all know who Galliano is and the fact he’s welcome back into the fold is a concern.
The wet hair trend needs to die. No one looks good like that.
ugh that split toe shoe is SO ugly.
Agree about Galliano. It makes me so uneasy.
I laugh out loud every time I see those shoes. It’s very, “yas gurl, give us hoof! It’s giving goat-goodness, Queen!” 😂
Meryl’s dress is too long! It’s Cannes! She’s Meryl freaking Streep and they can’t hem her gown?!
I despair.
Other than that, they all look fabulous! Including the rest of Meryl’s dress. I just get grumpy about these red carpet dresses that puddle on the floor in front.
If I could wear gowns like that I’d make sure they were hemmed.
Greta’s shoes are awful in both outfits. The white ones look like hooves!
Love the purple dress. Lily looks amazing in the blue. Juliette’s in the red dress is bombshell but yeah no to the hair.
It’s so refreshing to see real, sexy body on the red carpet instead of malnourished, ozempic-shot ones. They all look gorgeous!
I thought the same thing. These women look healthy, beautiful, have great shapes, but no one looks like they skipped a dozen meals this week.
Everyone is entitled to their own body and journey without our commentary, but in general, the red carpet did not look like a monument to 90s heroin chic, and that’s a win.
My favorite looks are Lily Gladstone, Eva Green, and actually the blue-and-white dress on Greta MINUS the hoof shoes. I also like Omar Sy’s look.
I am fascinated by Lily Gladstone. I would happily read a post about her every day.
I understand that Greta’s MM dress is technically high level with the pleating and assembly matching up all the stripes, but I still really don’t like it.
She looked great in the aubergine dress though.
Agreed. The blue dress is brilliantly constructed, but not flattering. I do think the hooves are cute. The aubergine gown is stunning and Greta rocks it!
It’s also pretty funny to me that designers use the skinniest models and then give them fake hips.
I don’t mind more outrageous dressing at places like the Met Gala and Cannes where they do more pure fashion. I thought Greta’s blue dress was a fun deconstruction of typical feminine day frocks. But it would bug me in a more normal setting.
Cannes has really been eclipsed by the Venice film festival in recent years. Nice to see they’re trying to up the glamour
I don’t really care for any of these – too dark and the styling is too severe for Cannes.
I love all the dresses and agree with everyone about Juliette’s wet hair –awful and Meryl’s too long dress-are you kidding me? But why is no one talking about the fact that I did not recognize Eva Green at all. I still can’t figure out if that is her and I am baffled. She looks like a completely different person.
I think it’s the bangs and the makeup, along with the angle of the shot. If you look at pictures of her from other parts of the event with her hair styled differently, she looks mostly the same. If she’s getting work done, it’s still fairly subtle.
Omar Sy 😍
The waiter jacket is awful, but that man can outshine and outsmile any fug fashion.
Beautiful classic looks. I’m so over the “how naked can we get” sheer look, as displayed at the met gala.
I think the blue summer dress is quite charming, but the Margiela tabi heels are 100% street fashion to me. They take a certain kind of swagger and whimsy to pull off, and the red carpet generally isn’t where you’re going to find that because it’s so formal. I like her moxie in attempting it, though. Most of the dresses are entirely workable for me. Even Léa Seydoux’s dress is pretty, if a tad boring.
Greta’s evening dress is nice. But I don’t like the short hair.
Same with Juliette. Great dress. But the hair is off. Slicked back and wet-looking is a no.
Lily looks great.
The women all look great but imo Greta’s boob-corset dress is an absurd sexy milkmaid costume & the white shoes are horrible. Stick to the sequins, Greta.
I think Lily’s dress is the best here. She looks amazing.
Saw a vintage Armani (from his renaissance era when he changed the celebrity red carpet) at the antiques mall on Sunday and tried to convince my teenage daughter she should get it and wear it for prom in 3 years 🤣 a beautiful silk column in a deep raspberry. $90 💀💀💀 I should go back and get it for myself. I love Armani.
These looks are good! I also sort of hate the blue dress on Greta and I don’t love the wet hair look
$90! that seems like a huge bargain. I’m not sure I could have resisted (and you clearly know much more backstory, or lore, as my kids like to say)
Greta’s dress is fantastic and I like her makeup. Lily looks gorgeous. She has the most beatific smile, so much grace and beauty.
The same could be said for Lily Gladstone.
Oh, I love Juliette Binoche SO MUCH that I just can’t even see the hair. She is amazing. I saw “The Taste of Things” a few weeks ago and she has the best final line of any movie ever. 🙂
Oh Lea is my girl crush and I dislike that dress so very much
I like the skirt on Eva’s dress
Lily looks the best to me va va voom I love her long hair cascading over her shoulder
I see the star of Lupin next to Greta in the first pic. Amazing actor and so damn easy on the eyes (sorry, I forgot his name, but WOW!)
I thought Greta’s Saint Laurent was dull. Meryl Streep wears this style of dress all the time. It’s flattering I get it. I wish she would take a risk. It’s fine not great. I don’t like Juliette Binoche or Lea Seydoux some of their comments, but they were the clear winners dress wise. I liked Lily’s dress. Eva’s was dull. I don’t like Galliano, but I don’t dislike the dress. I like 50s style dresses and I strongly dislike the screech that comes from some when a woman looks a bit larger thanks to a dress shape.
