Hollywood has really decided that Glen Powell is the next big thing

I generally ignore Glen Powell because, in my opinion, he doesn’t actually have “it.” That watchable It Factor. He’s perfectly handsome, with a nice body and a full head of hair. But do you want to actually watch him on screen? When you’ve seen him in a movie, are you like “oh, he’s something special?” Well, I guess I’m alone here, because the industry has decided that Glen Powell is the next big thing. It’s particularly painful because he fully admits that the success of Anyone But You is what “made” him a hot property – you know, the rom-com which Sydney Sweeney produced, cast him in and which she hustled all over the place. This should be Sweeney’s victory lap, not Glen’s. But Hollywood sexism, I guess. Sidenote: I love hirsute men but I find his chest hair unsettling on this THR cover. Anyway, here are some highlights from his Hollywood Reporter cover story:

He’s moved to Austin, Texas: At 35, he’s ready for a change, and the real benefit of “getting to this point in Hollywood is that I can now leave Hollywood,” he says. “It’s like I’ve earned the ability to go back to my family.”

The success of Anyone But You: To my surprise, and, frankly, to his, this is a very new development — despite all the media attention surrounding Top Gun, Powell’s career didn’t fundamentally change back in 2022. Instead, it was the runaway success of his recent Sydney Sweeney rom-com, Anyone But You, that proved to studio heads that he not only had leading-man charisma but also the increasingly rare ability to open a movie. In the months since its $200 million-plus box office haul, Powell, who’s more reminiscent of his buff, all-American predecessors than some of his more waifish contemporaries, has watched his stock in the industry soar.

The next Tom Cruise? “First of all, there will never be another Tom Cruise,” he says of his co-star, who has become a friend and mentor. “That is a singular career in a singular moment, but also movie stars of the ’80s, ’90s, early 2000s, those will never be re-created.”

On the radar: “I’m on the radar for the first time in my whole life, and it’s weird. I mean, after Top Gun, a guy would literally be wearing a Top Gun shirt and I’d be talking to him, and it was clear he had no idea.”

The advice of fellow Texan Matthew McConaughey. “He’s like, ‘Hollywood is the Matrix, man. You plug in and it’s all fake world,’ ” says Powell, who does a remarkably good McConaughey. “He’s like, ‘Then I go to Austin, and I unplug. It’s all real. Those are my friends, that’s my family, my actions matter there.’ And he’s right. If you’re here, you live in the Matrix all the time, there’s no separation of those worlds. And for me, especially as my parents get older and my niece and nephew are growing up, I want a separation of those worlds.”

He turned down a ‘Jurassic’ role: “Jurassic is one of my favorite movies. It’s one of the things I’ve wanted to do my whole life. I’m not doing that movie because I read the script and I immediately was like, my presence in this movie doesn’t help it,” he explains. “And the script’s great. The movie’s going to f–king kill. It’s not about that. It’s about choosing where you’re going to make an audience happy and where you’re going to make yourself happy.”

[From THR]

I hope he said no to the Jurassic movie because he hates my nemesis Laura Dern! As for all of the stuff about how famous he is now… it feels forced, but what do I know. It feels like his larger point is that LA is an industry town and he wants more of a work-life balance, which I understand. But again, to me, Glen is basically getting credit for Sydney Sweeney’s work and he’s not showing enough appreciation for that?

“I generally ignore Glen Powell…” Same, girl, same. This guy is the next big thing? Yawn.

    • OliviaOne says:

      Que?
Agreed.. He doesn’t have that energy.. he looks like a cross between Dean McDermott and Justin Hartley (whom I don’t find attractive either but no shade if someone does).

      • WithTheAmerican says:

Same! He’s (and the two you mentioned) actually too superficially “perfect” for my tastes.

They all look like romance novel covers.

      • OliviaOne says:

        WithTheAmerican
Well.. other than mcDermott, I agree. It feels like you asked AI to give you the perfect man and it mashed up something. I like my men kinda askew and quirky 😛

    • Another Anna says:

Glen Powell is what I think of as “technically handsome.” All the pieces are there, but it doesn’t add up to anything. He’s like listening to a symphony played without any emotion at all.

      • Laura says:

Honestly I agree and what’s funny is this is exactly how I feel about SS. She’s gorgeous but her interviews and acting fall so flat for me.

    • Reny says:

Everyone has their own opinion and there is no right or wrong in personal taste but as a casting professional & woman Glen Powell, although not my personal type usually (black hair/blue eyes or anyone in the Enrique Iglesias wheelhouse) lept off the screen in Hidden Figures playing John Glen. The “It” factor and memorability of what he made of a small part was intriguing. I knew he was the real deal though after the Netflix rom com Set it Up with Zoey Deutch. They made his blonde hair extremely bland brown and his initial personality not exactly John Glen chivalrous but still had my attention and although this isn’t great cinema his character’s arch falling for Zoey’s nice girl and rediscovering his own integrity was both believable and enjoyable. I haven’t seen the Top Gun sequel but that’s more about hating the first one but I find he has the versatility and offbeat hotness of the always excellent Sam Rockwell in the body of a Clint Eastwood type. Looking forward to Hit Man which looks good and has great word of mouth.

      • Agreatreckoning says:

Totally forgot he was in Hidden Figures (also forgot Kevin Costner was in it too). Octavia, Taraji and Janelle stole the show.imo I’m not ashamed to say that I loved Set It Up and Anyone But You. Watched both multiple times. Anyone But You was very well cast. Adored Bryan Brown and Michelle Hurd as a couple.

Too me, Anyone But You, was a fun rom com. I won’t hate on Glen Powell until he gives me a reason to hate on him. Might have a certain bias.

Glen Powell has always reminded me of Alan Ruck. One of my secret/not so secret crushes. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off..Ferris was the guy, Cameron was my guy. Look up current images of Alan Ruck. He’s aged well. Oops & Yikes, I’m way behind. Ruck was in Succession. Didn’t watch the series. Best get on that stat.

Agree @Reny. Looking forward to Hit Man. Powell did well in th Top Gun movie.
Anyone But You was a fun watch. The Serenity song. Unwritten. The koala. Dying.

  2. Lex says:

Loooove Glen!! He was absolute comedic genius in Scream Queens & was super fun in Anyone But You & Top Gun. Happy for his success 🙌🏻

    • Angel says:

Me too! a LOVE him. I noticed him back in Hidden Figures, he was great in Top Gun and a revelation in Anyone But You. Agree about the hirsute display not being appealing

    • Dara says:

Can I sit with y’all? I adore him. I admit he gives off a lot of golden retriever energy (blonde, happy, not very bright), but after watching far too many interviews I’m convinced he has a lot more going on than your average Hollywood hunk. I love too that he seems to be in on the joke. He posted this photoshoot on his IG and captioned it “here I am on the cover of the chest hair issue”

    • dj says:

I am glad he is finally getting some recognition. I told my husband years ago I could not understand why he had not blown up yet. I loved him in Scream Queens and Hidden Figures. He always made me pay attention to him in small roles. I am happy he is getting some leading roles. He seems charming and a good actor. I’ll take him over Chris Pratt any day!

    • booboocita says:

Oh, good — I thought I was the only one on this website! I’ve adored him since I saw him as John Glenn in “Hidden Figures.” Love what Mary Johnson (played by Janelle Monae) said about him: “It’s civil rights. I can see fine in any color.” I thought he was terrific in “Top Gun: Maverick,” too. I’ll admit, I never saw “Anyone but You,” but I’m not into rom-coms. I look forward to seeing him in “Twisters” this summer!

    • Sydneygirl says:

      I think he’s great and old-school sexy.

He’s fantastic in Devotion, awesome in Richard Linklater’s “Everybody Wants Some”.

I’m looking forward to seeing his new ones, Hit Man and Twisters.

    • sunny says:

He is excellent is Scream Queens. That cast had so many amazing comedic performances, especially Emma Roberts and Neicy Nash but his work is that show is in that top tier. He definitely is funny and talented though he hasn’t stood out in every project.

Hitman he co-wrote with Linklater(which is not surprising, he likes to co-write/collab with his writers), and it is getting great reviews. I have friends who saw it on the festival circuit and they all enjoyed it and talked about how terrific he is in it. Good for him.

Sweeney should get more credit for her work on getting Anyone But You made. Hollywood is a sexist mess but maybe part of the reason she isn’t is through the project was a success, she was terrible in it. Her performance was especially wooden. It was hard not to notice when you see the film and was pointed out by many, many critics. That was super surprising to me because she is a talented actress(she was absolutely brilliant in Reality).

    • Kristina says:

I usually agree with Kaiser and Celebitchy, but y’all are crazy! I LOVE Glen Powell, lol! I’m excited to see more of him. I guess I’m in the minority, because I love him in everything I’ve seen him in. And frankly, I thought his appearance in Top Gun Maverick was a total scene stealer.

  3. Lolo86lf says:

I have never heard of Glen Powell until this very minute. He certainly is handsome with lots of hair on the right places. What is it with some people that do not like chest hair? I watch a lot of videos on you tube and the male hosts with hairy chests have to button their shirts up to their necks. Is it some primal fear of hairy beasts that preyed on our ancestors? I find hairy chests to be very becoming on men. In Spanish hairy chested men are believed to be braver and masculine.

    • Notjust says:

Yes, LOLO86F, same. I love a good hairy chest. I could sing its praises all night long.
I dated guys who would shave off all their chest hair and I always told them not to for as long as we were dating. I don’t mind a neat trim, but please keep it hairy.
As for Glen, yes he has small eyes, but he has that funny guy, who is an a*hole, but can make you feel amazing kind of vibe. Ah, I just dig it.

    • Blithe says:

Maybe some of it is primal. And ethnic. Most of the teen boys and men that I grew up with and dated weren’t hairy, so at some level, I do associate hairy chests with aggression, with “other”, and with potentially being viewed as “prey” — something I def do NOT want to be. I hadn’t really thought about consciously it before you raised the question @Lolo86lf. Hmmm.

  4. Mcmmom says:

Eh, he’s not my type, but he’s fine. I don’t think he’s saying anything offensive to Sweeney – I think you just don’t like him, so anything he says is going to bug you.

My husband and I watched a period drama/romance (something about potatoes with Lily James, set during WW2) and I hated the movie, but he was fine. His unlikeable character was infinitely more likable that Lily James, so that’s something.

    • windyriver says:

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. How weird. Just watched it a few days ago. He was good, but didn’t especially stand out, no idea that’s who it was, so pretty much agree with other comments.

      • lucy2 says:

I loved that book but never got around to watching the movie.

I’ve only seen him in a few things, but he never stands out to me? There’s something kind of…bland? That’s not the right word. I don’t know. But he hasn’t grabbed my attention, but maybe is for a younger demographic.

    • Blithe says:

The GLaPPS is one of my favorite movies — but not because of Glen Powell. He was fine, but it was easy to see why he was the second-choice guy who got cast aside in favor of the smoldering pig farmer. I assumed that Powell played the part well, so I’ll reserve my opinions about his specialness until I’ve had the chance to see him in other roles.

    • MaisieMom says:

I didn’t watch that movie because while I liked the book in some ways, I was annoyed that the author kind of turned it into a “Town Mouse/Country Mouse” rom-com more than a story about people being occupied by the Nazis and trying to cope. When I read reviews of the movie, it seemed like they just upped the romance factor even more to showcase Lily James, so I skipped it. Elizabeth was more interesting than Juliette.

As for Glen Powell, we did watch “Anyone But You” and enjoyed it. He’s funny and seems pretty self-aware. I agree it was really Sidney’s baby (and I also think she has more range), but he was likable. And I personally don’t even find him that good-looking. He just has a great body.

  5. Nanea says:

He is one of those people (f/m/d) where a generic “who?” would be sufficient.

You’re right, he doesn’t have *it*, and either he’s trying too hard, or his agents/the media are – or both.

    Thank you, next.

  6. I'm not eating zoodles says:

    “Her?” – Michael Bluth

I kid, I kid! I’m sure Glen is a perfectly nice person, but there’s nothing about him that makes me want to rush to the theater to watch his films *because* he’s in them. This feels like a Scott Eastwood situation, where Hollywood keeps trying to make someone happen and the public is just not interested. If you have to keep telling me how big of a star he is, is he really that big of a star?

    • Mcmmom says:

Good comparison to Scott Eastwood, though I think Eastwood was both prettier AND less charismatic than Powell.

      • Smart&Messy says:

Agree on all points. Scott looks much better or still photos, which makes him great model material. On film he is a shapely wet noodle. Powell looks ridiculous to me on stills trying to do the blue steel with his beady little eyes. But I liked him in Top Gun. Could not pick him out of a line up standing next to Sam Worthington and 5 other sandy blonde baywatch 15th season types. I love thick chest hair, but his and Egg’s unsettle me.

      • lucy2 says:

Sam Worthington is a good example. He’s been in a lot of stuff, I’ve seen him in a lot of stuff, and he has had no impact on my brain whatsoever.

  7. StillDouchesOfCambridge says:

I dont care for him, but I do like his face, a little weird: he’s horsy! And he’s also right about there will never be another tom cruise. The hollywood movie stars are a dying species unfortunately

  8. Normades says:

His creative partnership/friendship with director Richard Linklater intrigues me. That’s probably why he’s in Austin

    • MsDarcy says:

He grew yup here in Austin and went to UT and has known Linklater for decades (its more of a hes’s moved back to Austin, rather than given up Hollywood and moved TO Austin). I can understand the hate against him for his Hollywood persona, but his parents live in my neighborhood and they are all actually very nice people.

  9. Mimic says:

He’s not a box-office draw for me, but I must say I loved him in the romantic comedy Set It Up, much more so than Anyone But You, which I watched on an airplane. His chemistry with Zoey Deutch was great, more than with SS, and it was a much better movie than ABY. That to me was his breakout role.

    • MaryContrary says:

Agree! Set it Up was really cute and a fun watch. I made it through 10 minutes of Anyone but You-total crap.

  10. Eurydice says:

I’ve forgotten – who was the last big thing?

    • Pomski says:

Josh Hartnett. Zac Efron. Miles Teller. Taylor Kitsch.

      • AlpineWitch says:

Armie Hammer, who (thank God) literally disappeared after the avalanche of accusations. Hopefully he doesn’t get a comeback…

  11. pme says:

He has 2 movies coming out, where he is the lead. Twisters will be the test, I think. Will people come to a movie where he is the lead? Sydney Sweeney did all the leg work for their movie, can he replicate that? Time will tell, or the box office will anyway. He is trying to get as many jobs now, while he is considered a success

    • Smart&Messy says:

I’d be shocked if he can generate even a decent BO return as a lead. Harry Cavill and Chris Hemsworth couldn’t on their own and they are much better looking, more charismatic and have a built-in fan base from different franchises.

  12. lisa says:

even his name is bland. he’s so bland I can totally see Hollywood guessing wrong and saying this is what the people want.

  13. Muffin says:

See, we have had Gerard Butler, Sam Worthington and Scott Eastwood presented similarly over the years. Butler does b-movies/dad-films these days, Worthington… I don’t know what he does now, he was the lead in Avatar (that no one remembers), and Scott Eastwood, well, that’s some shiny packaging for card board, acting wise. Unless you have a bit of range, you are not “the next big thing”. It is fine to be a working actor, that is a success in it self, but don’t try to sell me a mule and tell me it’s a race horse.

  14. Elsa says:

I like him. He is a fellow Austinite and I wish him well. I love what he says about his family. What is the point of bashing a perfectly nice, perfectly handsome and seemingly humble man?

    • Kris says:

Right? I’ve read some of his interviews… he seems really genuine and lovely. I’m a fan, and don’t get the bashing, either.

  15. Thinking says:

    I didn’t realize he’s 35. It’s now or never.

He has a handsome face but his eyes photograph strangely.

  16. Ameerah M says:

I am so sick of this Evil Capybara- looking man being foisted on me. He has the charisma of cardboard.

  17. Mel says:

I like him. My son and husband saw Hitman at the NY Film festival and they immediately thought his performance and everything he did was Oscar worthy. Good for him.

  18. Nicole says:

As an aside, I know all the people like to hate on LA (especially Texans), but come on! LA is not Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Beverly Hills. We are massive. Our actual #1 industry is finance. Don’t hate, Glen. Our Mexican food is just as good as yours.

    • Lisa says:

Thank you! I love LA and yeah if all you do is hang out with suits and sycophants then yeah it will get to you but there are a lot of wonderful genuine people here. Maybe he needed to get out of his bubble.

  19. WithTheAmerican says:

Hollywood always gets it wrong because everything is so workshopped and tested and based on fear, misogyny, and corporate profits.

So when the say someone is the next thing, it’s usually because they look like the last big thing (like they did with several women who looked like Julia Roberts) or were in a high BO project.

Industry captains have no radar and no taste.

  20. Anon says:

With Tom Cruise being his “mentor” it makes me wonder if he is a Scientologist like Cruise. If he isn’t yet, you can bet that Cruise is working on that because that is how it all works.

  21. Flamingo says:

I appreciate the Hollywood machine still trying to churn out ‘movie stars’. But he isn’t one to me. Do I think in 10 years I will be thinking wow, I can’t wait for the next Glen Powell movie? Meh, no.

I agree, he is taking or being given way too much credit for Sydney Sweeny’s work in bringing the movie to the screen. I just want to know whose idea it was to play the ‘we are having an on-set affair’ for free publicity. That was a genius move.

  22. ann says:

Not sure what sexism have to do with anything. Sydney Sweeney is also being called “the next big thing”. Is it possible for two people to be successful?

  23. Wednesday Addams says:

I don’t find hime handsome or charismatic. He looks like a possum.

    • Nuks says:

Possum, lol. That’s it. He has a small face and it bumps a little, although it really helps when he’s playing a douche. I liked his role in Top Gun, he was a good bad guy you love to hate. I figured that would be his lane going forward, and it’s honestly more interesting to play dimensional bad guys than rock-chinned heroes.

He did play a sincere role in Devotion with Jonathan Majors. But it’s not a perfect movie and JM has the meaty part.

I actually like Powell and am interested when he’s onscreen. He’s not a romantic type for me but I like to see his good/bad guy persona. I also suspect he gets good demographic numbers including young and old men.

  24. swiftcreekrising says:

I thought he was good as John Glenn in Hidden Figures, but he strikes me as generic-handsome-man in terms of casting in general. Kind of a WASPier version of a Josh Duhamel or something. I also thought he was Joe Alwyn for a while after HF came out, so you know…interchangable.

  25. Shells_Bells says:

Meh…(shrugs shoulders)… he’s a very attractive guy, but is missing that “something” for me. Maybe his charisma comes across more in person so that’s how he gets parts?

In comparison, I don’t find Leo D very attractive when seeing still photos of him, but I think he just comes alive on screen and find it hard not to pay attention to only him.

  26. Grant says:

I think he’s definitely got the “it” factor but maybe I’m biased because I’m an Austinite. I’ve liked him since he stole scenes on Scream Queens many moons ago.

    • Kazz says:

I agree, I think he’s handsome and humble. By doing his own publicity, he hasn’t voided SS’s work. The sky is big enough for both of them to soar. Let’s not do this “either or” pitching humans against each other, please. Let’s be better humans.
      Fellow Texan here.

  27. Yem says:

    Shouldn’t his name be Chris?

  28. Thinking says:

He’s starred with Tom Cruise and had success with Top Gun 2. It wouldn’t occur to me that a Sydney Sweeney is responsible for his success. I’d be more likely to think of Tom Cruse as giving him a leg up, even if everyone hates Tom Cruise.

Maybe Sydney Sweeney knew he was because of Top Gun 2, and cast him based on what she saw there. But if it wasn’t her, it would have been someone else. He had publicity and some degree of name recognition because of Top Gun 2. That’s how I came to know who he was. And then I realized he was the guy who starred in a bunch of movies or series with other pretty women.

    • Lisa says:

Yeah I think you have to give his rise and his career to Tom if you are giving it to another actor. I mean he definitely is benefitting now from Anyone being so successful but all the stuff coming out right now it is because of top gun.

  29. Get Real says:

    Meh. Another boring white boy

  30. Elizabeth Bowman says:

Instantly forgettable. Sydney (not really my cup of tea either, quite meh to me) at least has received major nominations for her acting, and worked hard to promote her projects. I understand her success. This guy? lol. He must have a great publicist.

  31. Lisa says:

He isn’t a bad actor but I have to be honest I don’t get it with him. He wasn’t even the most compelling part of Anyone but You. I mean the ex Boyfriend played by Darren Barrnett had more screen presence.

But he is tall and has that “classic” look and he seems unproblematic so I get why they are banking on him. I just hope he doesn’t screw up Twister because I love that movie, but I just don’t think he has what Bill Paxton has.

  32. ML says:

The only thing I’ve seen him in that I know of is Anything But You. He’s not the kind of actor who I need to go see in a film, but my daughter and I agreed that he did a better job acting than Sydney Sweeney in that film.

  33. Andrea says:

Genuinely I struggle to distinguish him from the other Hollywood men who look very similar. I wouldn’t go out of the way to see a movie just because he’s in it.

  34. QuiteContrary says:

He reminds me of the dull male leads in so many Hallmark movies.

And that is A LOT of chest hair.

    • Thank You, Next says:

      That’s a great description. He’s a nondescript white man.

I like my men manly and hairy, but he has thick, unkept chest hair up to his collarbone. No, thanks. I bet he has a hairy back and when he’s older he’ll be one of those men with tufts of hair coming out of his ears. Not my thing.

Also, he has no lips lol

  35. mary mary says:

Whenever I need to see some *actual* chemistry on my screen, I immediately turn to Set It Up. Love u, Glenn! Love u, Lucy! Love u, Zoey!

  36. thank you, next says:

Maybe it’s because I’m not from the US or maybe it’s a generational thing (I’m zillenial tho), but I feel very much WHO? when it comes to most new celebrities.

This man looks like someone you can meet at a soup aisle. At least with Picasso-esque beauties like Benedict Cumberbatch you get something unusual.

Also, I remember the last time Hollywood tried really hard to make a random white man happen and his name was Armie Hammer 😬😬😬

  37. Aly says:

There is something Chris Pratt-ish about his desire to be a movie star. Pratt couldn’t be a movie star and I don’t think Glen will be either. Looking mid and having some comedy chops is not enough, you need more versatility and strong screen presence.

  38. Square2 says:

I’m confused. Last week Jimmy Fallon announced Jonathan Bailey will be starring the new “Jurassic World”. Is this the same movie mentioned in the article or a different film?

Glen was the weakness link in Top Gun: Maverick. Val Kilmer, though older & was sick, had more presence and charisma in TOP Gun 2.
