Jelly Roll only wears socks once and just throws them out after

What are some of the luxuries you would indulge in if money were no object? I know my biggest one would be food (as in dining out or ordering in), because that’s my biggest excess now, even with money definitely being an object. Cooking is an art, I’m supporting the artists! Anyway, nowhere near the top of my list would be spending unlimited funds on socks. This is where country artist Jelly Roll and I differ. While backstage at the 59th ACM Awards last week, Mr. Roll revealed to Audacy personality Sabrina from Queens that he only wears socks once. One and done, that’s it. His socks are the mayflies of clothing. He calls it a “frivolous habit.” I just hope he’s buying from Bombas at least.

Who would’ve thought Jelly Roll’s most “frivolous habit” would involve socks?

The two-time Grammy-nominated country singer, 39, let fans in on one of his biggest secrets while speaking to Audacy’s Sabrina from Queens ahead of the 59th annual ACM Awards last week.

“Can I tell you a frivolous habit I have?” the “Save Me” artist said. “Don’t judge me for this, y’all. I promise I grew up very humble, but I only wear socks once.”

The “Wild Ones” singer admitted he buys his socks “in bulk” to avoid re-wearing them, saying, “It’s the most frivolous thing I’ve done with my success.”

“I’m sorry, I hope I didn’t let nobody down with that,” he added, “but when you’re fat, you can’t have stinky feet too, so you gotta have fresh socks!”

Amidst his recent success, Jelly has been committed to his health journey and focused on improving his physical fitness. Last month, the music star told PEOPLE, “I’m probably down 70-something pounds,” just ahead of his participation in the 2 Bears 5K with Bert Kreischer and Tom Segura at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. He finished the 5K on May 7 with his wife, Bunnie Xo, by his side, cheering him on.

“What a beautiful day w/ beautiful ppl! So proud of my baby doing the 5k & losing 50 lbs to do it! 💫,” she captioned an Instagram post, which included a PDA-filled video of the couple smooching in a cold plunge tub.

Reflecting more on his fitness progress with PEOPLE, Jelly shared, “I’ve been really kicking ass, man. I’m doing two to three miles a day, four to six days a week. I’m doing 20 to 30 minutes in the sauna, six minutes in a cold plunge every day. I’m eating healthy right now.”

“I feel really good,” he added of his lifestyle change. “I was thinking, I plan on losing another 100, 100-and-something [pounds]. If I feel this good down this weight, man, I can only imagine what I’m going to feel like by the time I go on tour.”

Jelly begins his Beautifully Broken tour later this summer, stopping in 37 cities across the U.S. His tour run — where he’ll be joined by musicians Warren Zeiders and Alexandra Kay — kicks off in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Aug. 27 and wraps up exactly two months later in Charlotte, NC.

[From People]

I would like to congratulate Jelly Roll on his health and fitness journey. That’s another area where I’d be interested in spending my (imaginary) fortune, because money makes a big difference in the resources available to you. Good for him for keeping at it, you’re a better man than I, Jelly! Now let’s pick apart this statement: “When you’re fat, you can’t have stinky feet too, so you gotta have fresh socks!” I think there’s a solution that Jelly Roll is overlooking here, something between stinky feet and one-wear socks. And I think you know what it is, too. Say it with me now: LAUNDRY. What is it with some men and laundry?! I’m presuming not all of Jelly Roll’s clothing is worn only once then thrown out, which means he has loads of laundry being done already. Can’t the socks be tossed in? Is this out of fear of losing mates in the wash? If so, I’m sorry but then it’s an overcorrection. This is madness, wasteful madness! There’s another way, Jelly! Come to the light! Or darks! Or delicates!

If he can wash his underwear, why can’t he wash his socks? Unless, he doesn’t wear… 😳

    • ML says:

      😣! Bisynaptic….that’s disturbing.
“ …when you’re fat, you can’t have stinky feet too, so you gotta have fresh socks!” This has absolutely nothing to do with weight, just to clear the air on hygiene. And that argument otherwise holds true for just about every article of clothing.

    • Cool eye says:

This guy travels by private plane, wears his socks once and claims to be humble. Um, ok. 🙄

      • Flamingo says:

He’s humble in the fact he grew up poor. Living in trailer parks in Tennessee. And went to prison as teenager for selling drugs. He lived the life. Unlike Kid Rock who grew up with a rich daddy and acts like he is from the street.

He’s being honest that this is his quirk with his fame and money. Which statistically he never should have made it.

  2. ML says:

Donated clothing in the NLs has to be clean…if he at least tossed his clean socks into the rag container (recycling cloth) or the second-hand clothing container , I think I would feel less upset. Wearing clothing once and tossing it away to head towards a landfill or incinerator is gob-smackingly wasteful!

  3. Michelle says:

This behavior is wasteful and disgusting, showing a complete disconnect between money and reality. I donate to a group called Socks 4 Souls where socks are given to unhoused people. Surely he could consider something like this instead of just throwing them out.

    • Eurydice says:

I doesn’t say in the article that he throws the socks away, just that he only uses them one. Maybe he does donate them, who knows.

      • Kitten says:

Oh come on. He would be the first to tell everyone if he was donating them. His PR person would be all over that.

  4. TN Democrat says:

Throwing socks away after 1 wear is wasteful, but the sensation of pilled fabric against the skin is cringeworthy for some people with sensory disorders. Clothes need to be manufactured to higher quality standards to last longer because an astonishing amount ends up in landfills and the workers producing clothing a shoes are paid and treated poorly. Has anyone ever washed a load of underwear and not lost at least 1 sock?

    • HeatherC says:

The missing sock reappears in your kitchen cabinets as the tupperware lid with no matching container. True story.

      • Delphine says:

Actually all the missing socks live happily ever after as sock monkeys in a different dimension. Totally true

    • ML says:

Sensory issues due to fabric pilling can be mitigated by using a “fabric shaver (?)”. The kind we have is called a gleener.

    • wolfmamma says:

I’d like to see a story next that he does clean them and donate them to the unhoused!

  5. Soapboxpudding says:

That is so wasteful! What a bad example to set for his fans.
If I was independently wealthy, I’d have a masseuse on call.

    • K says:

This guy is not exactly a shining example for fans anyway. He used to be a terrible rapper before he was a terrible “country” singer, and he always bragged in the community about having multiple trap phones. He’s been busted for selling drugs, his wife used to traffic other women. This is all part of a makeover to endear him to the country community. Being wasteful with socks is the least of the issues I have with him.

      • Emcee3 says:

He is definitely loathed among (more than) a few in country music circles. Type “jelly roll saving country music” in a search engine & watch what blog links come up from the SCM site.

  6. lucy2 says:

I hope someone is washing and donating them, because if not, that’s just incredibly wasteful.

  7. sevenblue says:

Does he wear the socks as he bought, without washing them first? I really don’t understand this. If he is rich enough, he doesn’t have to do his own laundry anyway. Someone else can wash them for you. It might be something psychological, maybe his feet smell when he was younger, now he is obsessed with not having smelly feet. I would understand that, but I hope he gets some kind of help for this behavior.

  8. Miranda says:

I’m nowhere near this finicky, but I will admit that I don’t wear socks for as long as I could. But I don’t throw them out, either. What are we actually supposed to do with them when they’re used but not worn-out? I see some people mentioning donation, but I thought that socks counted as underwear, which is generally not accepted by thrift stores and such? Wearing someone else’s old socks would be as gross to me as a used bra or undies, personally.

    • sevenblue says:

In my country, we have recycle bins for clothes, bags, etc. Maybe, you have something like that near you?

    • Kitten says:

If you have those blue textile recycle bins, that’s a great place for dingy socks. In my state we aren’t allowed to throw out textiles with our regular garbage anymore so these bins are becoming more and more ubiquitous.

  9. Elsa says:

I get this. I don’t do it, but my clothes never feel or look as good once they are washed. Maybe I’m just crap at laundry.

  10. Flamingo says:

He’s an interesting character, and really defied all the odds to be where he is today. Most 18 year olds busted for selling drugs and spending a few years in prison. Don’t end up at award shows and selling millions of records almost 20 years later.

If socks are his quirk, so be it. I have to assume the team that runs his household are not throwing them away. And get repurposed or donated. That’s my hope anyway.

In my early 20’s I had this quirk of only liking the way a new pair of jeans felt. They didn’t feel right after washing. I must have had 100 pairs of jeans. My mom literally yelled at me when she saw my Gap shopping bag lol. I snapped out of it finally.

You just can’t replicate that fresh new feeling with new stuff. 100% wasteful, but omg I LOVE IT!

    • jfc... says:

I know you think you sound super cute and quirky ~ but you actually were and are being incredibly, absurdly, insultingly wasteful.

In times like this, when we’re all (though some of us more than others) feeling the effects of global warming, there’s nothing cute about your attitude. You’re being cruel and callous. Probably because, unlike me, you’re not seeing forest fires, the death of wild life, and draughts. I hope you take this opportunity to change for the better. Change starts at home.

  11. Kitten says:

In America alone, an estimated 11.3 million tons of textile waste – equivalent to 85% of all textiles – end up in landfills on a yearly basis. If you’re tossing away new socks every day or buying tons of new clothes only to toss them in a year then you are part of the problem.

  12. jfc... says:

THANK YOU! A sane comment! You are so right. This kind of post is the perfect opportunity to remind people that the fashion industry contaminates more than nuclear energy. We are a wasteful society, poisoning our own water supply, and for what? For that teehee new socks feel? Jfc the nerve of some people to think this isn’t downright evil behavior.
