The D-Day anniversary events in Normandy were Queen Camilla’s first foreign trip in months, not counting her bird-hunting vacation in Spain in March. The last two times she traveled on state business were last year’s trips to Kenya and France, correct? And that was where we really saw that Camilla does not travel well. We especially saw that in Kenya, when Camilla seemed to be disassociating in real time as she was forced to interact with Black folks. Not to mention the crazy moment when Charles left her in the car like she was a rabid dog who bites strangers.
I bring up Camilla’s lack of grace, dignity and statesmanship because the trip to Normandy was a mixed bag for ol’ Cam. On the plus side, it appears that she was getting sloshed on good French wine with some 100-year-old WWII veterans. Any event where she gets to booze it up is a plus in her book. She also got to wear an utterly ridiculous hat, which is still astounding to me, that she chose this completely insane hat to a somber event. But the worst moment came when Camilla and Madame Brigitte Macron were tasked with placing bouquets of flowers at the British Normandy Memorial. That’s when Madame Macron tried to reach for Camilla’s hand and Camilla acted like the French First Lady had cooties. Then Camilla didn’t even stand there for a respectful amount of time.

The vibe when she motions Madame Macron to walk with her is interesting. Almost as if she muttered, “Get on with it, Brig, show us where you keep the good wine.” The British media is currently trying to make it sound like Madame Macron “broke royal protocol.” You know what else broke royal protocol? The guillotine. Seriously, having seen Brigitte Macron’s warmth with the WWII veterans, I would be willing to bet that she reached out to Camilla as a simple, human gesture. Camilla’s quick exit is also irksome. Also: People Mag points out that King Charles greeted President Macron with a hug, and he kissed Brigitte’s hand in greeting.

So once again a case of “the Fail” and similar thinking their “royal rules” apply outside their realm. Some people do the “helping” as a “power move” but Obama was always genuinely respectful to elders. (Definitely baked into both his Hawaiian/Asian upbringing and “Black folks from the South Side of Chicago”.)

When Michelle Obama put her arm around QEII when they took a photograph, the Queen took it in stride. Diana actually had a good friendship with Bernadette Chirac, who gifted her with the Dior handbag that became a favorite. And after Diana died in a Paris hospital, Madame Chirac came and sat vigil with Diana’s body so she wasn’t left alone until Charles arrived with the Spencers.

The current outrage over PM Rishi Sunak’s slighting early departure from the V-Day ceremonies is blanketing Camilla’s hide and any snub fallout. But I think she looks coldly over it and out of it. But that’s not news.
Who ever did Camilla’s makeup should be shot . I don’t even know where to begin the overdone eyebrows , the wrong foundation colour .

Camilla really missed a trick there. A picture of her holding hand with Mme Macron in front of the memorial would have been iconic. It would have sent so many positive messages to the world and most importantly our European allies. She’s not THE queen she’s husband to the monarch so no protocol has been breeched. If she was THE queen she would have been included in a different part of the ceremony. Complete fail on her part. It’s down there with the faux medals, the costume uniform and our PM leaving before all the events of the day had concluded.

1) Such a monstrosity of inappropriateness with the giant Easter brunch hat on a solemn occasion;

I watched most of DDay 70 and most of the European queens were there in spring colors. They stood out like beautiful flowers against the sea of dark suits and that felt lovely – hope respringing after great loss.

Ok your comment made me go back and find the photo. Um that is a giant glass of red wine and I’m someone who loves wine and has a pretty high tolerance for it. I can just see the French service person pouring a completely normal glass of red wine for a European luncheon and then Camilla saying “keep going keep going keep going”.
Last time I was in Paris the standard pours were a scant 4 oz! They even have pour line marks on the glasses. There’s at least 16 oz in that glass FFS. Who can drink that much in daylight? Someone with a lot of practice, that’s who.
Also noticed the large glass of wine. But one assumes it was very good wine. Courageous in an all white outfit-would like to see additional pics to see if she actually drank it. Was the lunch after or before the ceremony. Am sure I would be feeling no pain after a glass like that.
I also went back and looked more closely at the photos. Guess I should look at them more closely. Charles has so many medals on his fake uniform that he looks like he might fall over forwards. And who is he trying to impress??? We all know he did not serve in a war, and most of those medals are for attending events like his mother’s various anniversaries as queen. Wonder if he gave himself a medal for attending his own coronation??
And I had not noticed the huge glass of wine Camilla was apparently gesturing with, and I also wonder if she drank it. Certainly, giving a woman in a white dress a glass of red wine is a terrific idea since the media would REALLY love it if she had spilled some on herself!!! Plus, Camilla really looks frumpy. Who is tailoring her clothing? Camilla apparently prefers loose-fitting, dresses without much shape, but surely she could still be comfortable in something that looks a lot better. Brigitte has also been First Lady of France longer than Camilla has been Queen, so there is also that. By standard protocol, “Length of Service” is a tie breaker for seating etc. arrangements. I know some Celebitchies giggled about Will and Kate being several rows back at the Jordanian royal wedding, but they were pretty much seated according to protocol. Heads of State/Government, former heads of state/government, consorts traveling alone, then second-in-commands and Crown Prince alley. Will (with Kate) hadn’t been Crown Prince for very long so he was seated at the end of the section.

Even without that knowledge, though, it’s basic manners not to insult a host. Camilla should know not to insult her host in their country with the cameras on them. The way the BM is crowing over this when it looks so rude and disrespectful to the veterans is giving irrelevant.

Camilla is entitled to not want to do this (I can kind of sympathize with her on this), but 1) her people should have absolutely made this clear to the Macrons in advance and 2) she is a guest and needs to be sensitive to her hostess’ clues.

Charles gave a speech in French which is AWESOME. Will behaved himself which is unusual. If Camilla had picked up this clue, it would have been wins all around.

This is no sweat off Mr. and Mrs. Macron’s noses however. They will be enjoying a state visit with the BIdens, and I daresay C&C never will.
I follow European royal fashion. The Dutch and Belgian queens were there and wore hats as per their houses’ custom. Queen Maxima often dons large chapeaux as she likes big hats to match her big personality (and the Dutch seem to be pretty traditionalist about the “royals wearing hats” thing). Some of hers are easily as frothy as the stuff Camilla likes wearing. But she chose a medium sized and not-adorned hat that went well with her navy coat dress. It was chic but restrained. Perfect for an occasion where you are in the front row and want to look nice as you rep your country but you know it’s not about you.
Queen Mathilde’s hat was small and a shade not too far off her hair so I had to squint in the photo I saw to make sure she was wearing one.
Of course these ladies are only the focus of press in their area. I don’t know if they visited any of the cemeteries etc. or bounced back home afterwards but they are both known for being warm-hearted and would certainly have responded to the cue from Mme Macron.
