Nicola Coughlan claps back on the Photoshop-waist claims & body-shamers

Bridgerton Season 3 PART 2 is out today! OMG. It was really stupid for Netflix to split up an eight-episode season into two parts, but here we are. I suspect that it was supposed to be an anti-binge-watch scheme. Meaning, if you mainline eight hours straight of Bridgerton, you might go into a sugar coma. I love the series but yeah, I don’t recommend binge-watching any of the seasons either. Take your time, enjoy the nuances, let it become a water-cooler show.

Anyway, ahead of Part 2’s drop, the Bridgerton cast did another screening event at Leicester Square in London. Nicola Coughlan basically dressed up like a frothy bride in a pink Rodarte wedding gown with a matching veil. The burgundy gloves are a strange choice but I appreciate that she was mixing it up. Luke Newton… does not have much presence, on or off screen. Bless his heart. That’s what I always think about Colin Bridgerton and Penelope’s love for him: “Really, him? Bless his heart.” The heart wants what it wants. Meanwhile, Nicola had been killing it with how she talks about her body and how she claps back on those dumbass body-shaming trolls:

“I think if you wear corsetry for long enough, your body really molds to it,” she explains of the show’s costumes. “Sometimes they come in a fitting for a fashion designer and they put a corset on me and I’m like, ‘Oh, you can go tight,’ and they go, ‘What do you mean?’ I’m like, ‘My body now will go whew.’ I saw some trolls. They were like, ‘They photoshopped your waist,’ and I was like, ‘No, they did not,’” she continues.

Earlier this week, Coughlan, 37, gave a cheeky response at a fan event in Dublin after she was told she was “very brave” for stripping down on the show.

“You know, I think it is hard,” she shared in a clip posted on social media, “because I think women with my body type — women with perfect breasts — we don’t get to see ourselves on screen enough. I am a very proud member of the perfect breasts community, and I hope you enjoy seeing them,” she added.

Yeah, I don’t believe they’re Photoshopping Nicola’s already-corseted waist, because I don’t believe Nicola is as “big” as people make her out to be. She’s a short woman with curves and people act like she’s as big as a house. It’s insane. And yes, she has an excellent rack.

Nicola Coughlin is gorgeous, it’s deeply stupid that we’re having these conversations about her weight (she’s a TINY woman). And I’ve just watched the sexy scene in Ep5, she wasn’t joking about perfect breasts

    • Elizabeth says:

I don’t usually pay attention to other women’s chests but she wasn’t joking at all.

      • Charlotte says:

As a mostly-straight woman, I would completely switch teams for gorgeous Nicola. Really, she should be worshipped as the tiny goddess she is …

I think Bridgerton’s costuming has always done her a disservice…I know it’s done on purpose, but I appreciate that they finally switched it up and gave her body some curves this season.

Luke grew a beard, but they are still trying their hardest to give his face some smouldering angles. The contour on his cheeks is just too much for me! 😅

It’s so funny to me that in the book/series, Colin is supposedly this charismatic, confident and appealing guy while Pen is the quieter, less confident, “also-ran”, very forgettable type character (which is how she’s been able to be so successful as Lady Whistledown. People talk in front of her and ignore her like she’s a bump on a log) but in real life it seems to be very much the opposite. Nicola has a super bright and sparkly, engaging energy and Luke . . . seems nice enough but also very forgettable. He seems more like a background actor – where you see him in something and go “Hey! That guy!”

I was meh on this season (because I didn’t like this book at all) until I saw interviews with Nicola.

Proud member of the perfect breasts community? Love it. She’s gorgeous and funny. Bridgerton is lucky to have her.

  4. JanetDR says:

I love her response! And yes, she’s gorgeous 💗

  5. Barbara says:

I think I finally figured out who Luke Newton reminds me of. He looks like a Jonas brother!

Nicola is gorgeous and she’s perfect as Penelope.

  6. Misa says:

I love Colin, and even more in the first two season, when he was less smouldering lol
I love that he’s sweet and kind, that he’s interested in finding a pursuit outside of being a wealthy bridgerton boy, and that he struggles with the whole sleeping around and being hot-and-dangerous trope. I also love that he and Pen are friends, that the one time he treats her harshly is when he says the bit about not courting her (that was cruel but also one instance _- apparently it wasn’t there in the book, and in fact it was out of character), that he finds her mind and her body and her demeanour super attractive.

As for the actor, I think he’s hot. Maybe it doesn’t translate well in photos, but in motion and in the two interviews I’ve seen with Nicola… full marks!

    • Lotte says:

Couldn’t agree more! I love Colin and Luke. I think in photos he looks stunned, but in interviews, especially if Nicola is with him, he’s animated and not the dullard people always seem to accuse him of being.

      • Charfromdarock says:

Luke, like his character Colin, is only interesting me when he’s with Nicola in the show or in an interview.

She is gorgeous and so charismatic. Nicola is everything. He’s just Colin.

I was watching press while waiting for part 2 (which as of 8:19am est, I’ve finished!) and saw she mentioned first and exercise. The context was being able to maintain the stamina required to shoot for almost 8 months straight. She didn’t mention her appearance once. I think that’s another reason why she gets so much hate. She’s beautifully confident in herself.

As for Luke, loved him this season in the show and in press. I don’t find him hot bc I generally don’t find white guys hot. But I’ve noticed I do find them hotter when they get a little older and start getting some fine lines and what not. They become more distinctive. Wait till Luke is about 38. He’s gonna be gorgeous!

  8. Colleen says:

Nicola and I have the same body type (woo Irish genetics) and I’ve had the same dumb body shaming comments. I LOVE HER RESPONSES to the b.s. I’m 5’1with curves – we can’t be stopped!

I’m going to start using them on my mom when she gets on her nonsense about my body.

  9. Tara says:

Nicola looks great. However I have nothing nice to say about his outfit here. Lol. Is this what the kids are wearing?

    • Kat says:

I was going to come here to say exactly that. That is the worst “suit” I think I have ever seen. It is something that would be worn to a new wave concert in 1985.

    • Colleen says:

Both he and his character dress like pirates

  10. tealily says:

She’s just the best, isn’t she? I hate that this is the conversation, but I love her deflection so much.

  11. ElleE says:

This woman and her body are all over the “news”. Is one person writing every article?

It is a niche streaming show; she seems nice, but the week’s long coverage is weird.

  12. JFerber says:

I’ve never watched her show, but she is so pretty and looks like so much fun. Even when I see commercials for the show, she is the standout–always–no question. Why can’t people just shut up and let her be the superstar she obviously is–with the It factor in spades? People are so dumb.
