David Duchovny: ‘I feel like I discovered Angelina Jolie’ in the 1990s

When Angelina Jolie was coming up in the 1990s, she really did become a very big deal pretty quickly. She won three Golden Globe awards in consecutive years (for the George Wallace miniseries, Gia and Girl, Interrupted), she won an Oscar at the age of 24 and she had over a dozen credits by her 25th birthday in 2000. It wasn’t overnight success, but from the span of Hackers in 1995 through Girl, Interrupted in 1999, she became a “movie star” pretty quickly. In that four-year span, she took some smaller roles, supporting parts in bigger actors’ vehicles. One of those films was Playing God. I saw that many years ago but I don’t remember much about it other than Angelina was in it and David Duchovny was the lead. This was Duchovny’s heyday too – this was something he filmed in between seasons of The X Files. He was a big deal. So what does Duchovny remember about Angelina?

You might not think of David Duchovny when Angelina Jolie comes up, but the Californication alum says he played a part in her success.

During an appearance on Sirius XM’s Radio Andy on Thursday, Duchovny was asked what immediately came to mind when he heard the names of various past costars. A mention of Jolie, his leading lady in the 1997 thriller Playing God, prompted him to say, “I feel like I discovered Angelina Jolie.”

When host Andy Cohen followed up on that, Duchovny explained what he meant.

“Yeah, cause I was casting, I was part of the casting,” Duchovny said of the movie that he headlined. “I didn’t discover her, but… she came in, and I just knew she was a movie star, and I told everybody [that] we’ve gotta cast her.”

The X Files alum confirmed that he was referring to Playing God, which also costarred Timothy Hutton. TV director Andy Wilson was behind the camera, and official casting credits went to Elaine J. Huzzar (From Dusk Till Dawn) and Johanna Ray (Snowpiercer). According to the movie’s official description, it’s about “a disgraced surgeon” who “reinvents himself as a gunshot doctor in the criminal underworld.”

From what (little) I remember of the film, Angelina really did steal some scenes and it was one of those films where you sit up and ask “who is THAT?” As I said, she was on a run back then – soon after, she did Gia, Pushing Tin (a hilariously weird role in a very offbeat movie) and The Bone Collector with Denzel. The same year as Playing God, she was in the George Wallace miniseries opposite Gary Sinise. David probably does feel like he discovered her, but she was being “discovered” by many different directors, producers and actors around the same time! Still, it’s sweet that David remembers that. Interestingly enough, David and Angelina never fooled around but Angelina reportedly dated Timothy Hutton back then.

Isn’t Angelina Jolie kind of Hollywood Royalty? I remember seeing her on award shows when she was a child. That is just a weird thing to say. “Discovering someone” has a different meaning in the entertainment world.

It really does feel like she show up as a fully-formed force to be reckoned with. I remember Pushing Tin. Is that where she met Billy Bob?

    • AmyB says:

Yes, that is where Jolie and Thorton met and then later dated/married. Thorton was engaged to Laura Dern, ended that, and then eloped with Jolie.

Angelina is a nepo baby AND very talented. She was always going to be a star. I like David, but…nah, man. 😊

No mention of the beloved cheesefest that is Hackers?

I particularly love the “man casts about for relevance” expression on his face in that top photo.

She was always going to be huge- but if memory serves that movie wasn’t some huge hit.
Don’t get me wrong – I loved Playing God. I remember recording it off of Showtime or Cinemax or something and watching it a ton because the soundtrack was killer.

    Ahh good times lol

If Angelina had made acting her priority and her central focus she would be on Meryl Streep level at 49.
She was a game changer and way ahead of her time on the intellect level. As she said she was acting because of money to help her family and it was her parents dream. She never took it too seriously until she did some roles.

    • Intellect Level says:

She was a huge star from the start with amazing charisma. I was still reading physical magazines and I remember all the articles about Angelina during Pushing Tin and Girl, Interrupted.

Also remember she was never into acting and the whole HW thing; she was trying to help her family, and it was all a means to an end so she could have a platform to pursue the things she cared about. I’m impressed she gives 10% to her brother (she promised her mum or something). She dated or hung out with Mick Jagger for a little while bc her mum was a huge fan and Mick Jagger was like, crying on the phone, leaving her messages, and begging her to go out with him (pathetic – haha).

Didn’t agree with her supporting NATO and CoFR (very right-wing and neocon as far as foreign policy is concerned) but otherwise she’s been pretty consistent with her social issues. I think she might be libertarian mixed in with liberal.

I love her and she is a huge movie star on her own but can she be considered as a Nepo baby? She is extremely beautiful ( which helps a lot in this business) and her father was a household name even if she dropped his name, producers knew who she or her father was and she went to the Oscars as a child too. And for Duchovni: here we go again, men want to take credit for the success of women…

    • Lauren says:

She is a Nepo baby and she has recognized her privileges. She has said in the past that who her father is and being white, has given her advantages that others do not get..
