Halle Berry on working with Pierce Brosnan: he restored my faith in men

Halle Berry is busy promoting her new Netflix movie, The Union. My husband and I watched it last weekend. I liked it, but he did not. It followed the basic format of its genre and I correctly guessed the back-half of the movie’s plot twist within the first five minutes, lol. That was exactly what I was looking for in that movie and it hit its marks. Plus, I appreciated that almost every actor who was playing a spy in it was over 40.

Anyway, Halle did one of Wired’s Autocomplete Interviews, which features celebrities answering questions about themselves that have been taken from Google’s autocomplete search results. One of the questions Halle was asked was, “What James Bond movie was Halle Berry in?” (Halle played Bond Girl “Jinx” in Die Another Day.) In her answer, Halle responded with some high praise for Pierce Brosnan, who was playing Bond at the time. According to her, Pierce is such a wonderful human being that he restored her faith in men.

“What James Bond movie was Halle Berry in? That would be Die Another Day with Pierce Brosnan,” Berry said in the video, in response to a prompt derived from Google searches with her name. “He will always be my Bond, always.”

“I am a Pierce Brosnan fan. He restored my faith in men on that movie,” she added. “There couldn’t be a human who is more of a gentleman than Pierce Brosnan.”

Die Another Day marked Brosnan’s fourth and final turn playing British spy Bond. He first played the role in 1995’s GoldenEye, and Daniel Craig memorably took on the part following Brosnan, beginning with 2006’s Casino Royale. In Die Another Day, Berry played an American intelligence agent named Jinx. The movie released six months after Berry won her Academy Award for her role in 2001’s Monster’s Ball.

“Bond wasn’t on my wishlist, no, to be in one, but I loved the movies always,” Berry further recalled of making the movie while speaking with Wired. “But having been in one, I feel like I’m a part of cinematic history. Those movies are iconic, they will forever be a part of our history, and I’m really honored to have been part of one, especially with Pierce.”

Berry has noted Brosnan’s kindness towards her on the movie’s set in the past, including in 2020, when she shared during an appearance on The Tonight Show that Brosnan once saved her from choking while they filmed a scene together.

“I was supposed to be all sexy and and seduce him with a fig,” she said at the time. “And then he had to get up and do the Heimlich. So not sexy. You should’ve seen it — James Bond knows how to Heimlich.”

“He was there for me,” she added of Brosnan during that interview. “He will always be one of my favorite people in the whole world.”

Berry’s appearance in Die Another Day proved popular enough that the producers behind the Bond movies began working on a spinoff movie for her character, but as Variety reported in September 2020, the studio decided not to move forward with the idea.

“It was very disappointing. It was ahead of its time,” she told the outlet of the idea at that time. “Nobody was ready to sink that kind of money into a Black female action star. They just weren’t sure of its value. That’s where we were then.”

I didn’t know that Halle has spoken about how great Pierce is before. That is crazy that he had to perform the Heimlich on her! I looked up what was going on in Halle’s life around the time that she was filming Die Another Day and she was married to Eric Benét at the time. I’m glad Pierce treated her with kindness and respect on set. In response to Halle’s comments, people have been sharing stories on Twitter about their positive experiences with Pierce, from randomly running into him while out and about to confirming that he’s “lovely” to crew members on set. In an age where so many actors have ended up being problematic, it’s really refreshing to hear stories of the good ones. Between Doug Emhoff, Gov. Walz, and now Pierce Brosnan, tonic masculinity is having quite the week.

Right now, Pierce is busy filming the film adaptation of one of my favorite new book series, “The Thursday Murder Club.” He’s playing Ron, which I wasn’t behind at first, but am absolutely willing to give him the benefit of the doubt now. I can’t wait for that movie, especially since we’re going to have to wait so long for book five.

Well this is a relief. I saw headlines about her speaking about him and their experience working together and my initial reaction was ‘on no’, not because I expect him to be awful but it does keep happening!

  2. Pinkosaurus says:

Pierce has the sexiest voice on earth, and I love how he’s defended his GORGEOUS wife from body shames (although gross that he’s had to!)

I’m always happy to see him in any and every role he takes and so glad to hear he’s a real one. His Bond movies are so fun.

  3. Feebee says:

I wasn’t surprised she had good things to say about him. There’s barely been a hint of scandal or bad behaviour rumors so after all these years you have to figure he’s almost too good to be true.

So to ground us all, he said nice things about RFK jr. So nobody’s perfect 🙂

  4. Whomever says:

Are you sure that’s not Chris Pine in the last photo? The resemblance is uncanny.

  5. Nano says:

This is interesting cause from a couple of stories I’ve heard Brosnan is a d*ck. So maybe not to everyone.

Pierce lives in Malibu and we see him around town. He’s always so low key and nice. Saw him at Starbucks and he got in the back of the line, quiet, no drama, so no one noticed him for a while. He knew the barista’s name, tipped really well, and one of the drinks he bought was for his limo driver.

    • Amy says:

I went to Pepperdine in the 90s and worked at a mid-level restaurant in Malibu that he (and many celebs) frequented. He was always one of the nicest and most patient customers. A definite mensch!

    Can confirm Pierce’s niceness.

Parts of “Tomorrow Never Dies” were filmed in my hometown — airport, car chase, hotel roof where he climbs onto that white globe, among other things.

He and his wife often came to the bookshop where I was I was working as a student. They always had time for a chat, and always left with quite a lot of books. It helped that we had the largest selection of English-language books on nearly ever subject.

Love the Thursday Murder Club series. I can’t wait to see Pierce as Ron, although I’d say he was more of a Stephan

    • Bean says:

I agree – I feel like he’s too handsome for Ron but would be perfect as Stephan. Though I’m not going to complain about more Pierce on screen.

    • ACC says:

Oh wow, he would have been great casting as Stephan. Well, I look forward to seeing his Ron steal the show.

    • BeanieBean says:

Pierce as Ron?! I was thinking Robert Carlyle as I read the books, but Pierce will be great, too! I had a whole cast of British actors in my head as I read the books–none of whom, as it turns out, will be in the movie (TV series?)! I’d make a bad casting agent, apparently. 😉

      • BeanieBean says:

Thought I’d come back & share the whole cast I had/have in my head as I read the books. Carlyle’s was the only name I actually knew, the others are actors I know from several TV shows, so I went to IMDB for their names:

–as mentioned, Robert Carlyle for Ron, I think I was watching The Full Monty 2 as I started the books
–Clive Swift for Stephan, the fellow who played Richard, Hyacinth Bucket’s husband (but Swift as he was then, no idea if he’s still even around)
–Susan Lane for Joyce, she played Brian’s wife in New Tricks
–for Elizabeth–oh, that woman who’s been in a gazillion things whose face & voice I know so well but for the life of me cannot conjure up her name or any show she’s been in; sigh, will get back to y’all on that.

  9. what's inside says:

Pierce Brosnan has been at the top of my ideal man list since his Remington Steele days and was everything a Bond should be. He also has been the blueprint for what a man should be with how he has handled his family life, i.e. being there for wife, Cassandra, and daughter, who suffered from cancer. His current wife really has the best husband and life partner.

  10. Formal Gumby says:

Pierce Brosnan has been my older man fantasy for years. Decades, really, since Thomas Crown Affair. I love hearing wonderful things about him, and I am literally in awe of how good he and Halle look together in that pic with his tux and her black and white gown. Like… my jaw is agape at the effortless beauty and synergy. (Although I do understand styling, so it’s not quite effortless, but gee whizz these two!) I love that’s he’s happily married, but that pic is one I want to frame 🙂

Also, I just listened to a podcast episode that interviewed Nicholas Galitzine (one of my fave actors these days) and he spoke almost poetically about Pierce. They worked together on the 2021 movie Cinderella where Nicholas plays the prince and Pierce is his father the king, and on the podcast Nicholas recalled them taking walks together, just being peaceful and kind of sharing wisdom, and how it was one of those moments that you realize will stay with you forever. It was lovely to hear Nicholas share a bit about that. (Fyi, he was asked in the interview about someone who had a significant influence on him or something to that effect)

  11. Kelly says:

I’ve had the biggest crush on him since the Manions of America, a pre Remington Steele bodice ripper. He just gets better.
