Prince Harry’s paperback edition of ‘Spare’ won’t have any new chapters?

Sad news: the paperback edition of Prince Harry’s Spare will not include any new chapters. According to the Bookseller – who is probably getting their information directly from Penguin Random House – the paperback edition “will have the same cover image as the hardcover edition, a newly designed package and the contents of the book are unchanged.” Meaning, nothing was removed or updated, and no new chapters were added. Would you like this information to be given to you in the most tabloidized way? Congrats, the Mail’s Royal Editor Becky English had a new piece about how “no new chapters” will be seen as an olive branch.

Prince Harry is finally set to bring out the paperback edition of his vitriolic memoir, Spare. However the Royal Family is likely to breathe a sigh of relief after it was announced by his publisher that the book would not be updated from its hardback form, a somewhat unusual move for an international bestseller.

Unfortunately, however, its October release will clash with King Charles’ high-profile appearance at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa, the first time he has attended since acceding the throne and becoming head of the global organisation. The meeting will be held from October 21-25 with Harry’s paperback being published in the US on October 22 and then the UK two days later. Buckingham Palace announced back in July that the monarch planned to attend despite his ongoing cancer treatment as part of an Autumn tour in October that will also take in Australia.

Publishers Penguin Random House announced yesterday that Spare’s new imprint would be published in 16 languages worldwide. It will have the same cover image as the hardcover edition, a newly-designed package but ‘the contents of the book are unchanged’.

Questions had been raised as to whether Harry would, like many authors, update the paperback edition with a new chapter, particularly considering how much has happened in the last year. In that time, his relationships with his family [have] continued to break down, the King has been diagnosed with cancer – which saw Harry make a transatlantic dash to London to see his father for barely 30 minutes – and his children, Archie and Lilibet, have become Prince and Princess. The fact that Harry has chosen not to add to the revelations may be seen by some as an attempt to try and smooth over family ructions.

Spare, which was first published on January 10 last year, became an instant publishing sensation and sold more than six million copies, in both print and audio, across the world. It holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest selling nonfiction book of all time, not least because Harry became the most high profile family member to ever ‘kiss and tell’ on the monarchy.

However while the book, ghostwritten by journalist J.R. Moehringer, was a financial success for the prince, his reputation is widely considered to have suffered as a result. Many considered both the book and Harry’s round of equally vitriolic media appearances to publicise it a betrayal too far and criticised his version of events.

It generally takes between six months to a year for a paperback edition to come out after the initial publication in hardback. They can be produced and sold more cheaply, and are designed to attract more readers. Whether Spare will do this considering its runaway success as a hardback remains be seen.

[From The Daily Mail]

They think if they keep pressing their palace-given talking points that “Harry’s reputation suffered” or “Harry is so controversial” or “Americans love King Charles and hate the Sussexes,” then it will be so. Meanwhile, Spare was a huge success, Harry was happy that his story was finally out there, he got a huge ovation when he went on The Late Show, he got a standing ovation at the ESPYs, and the paperback edition is going to steal the Windsors’ thunder throughout October and probably November too. Now that being said, I wish Harry added new chapters. I love that he hasn’t changed anything (all of those scandalized tabloid editors can suck it) but I definitely wanted some new chapters. Maybe he’s saving some stuff for a second book, fingers crossed.

It’s DailyFail and I hope they are being deliberately misled. Just one or two chapters talking nothing at all about the Royal Family but maybe about his new Jobs 😉 😏. Advertising BetterUp etc

    • Jan90067 says:

I think it’s more of a “royal talking point” in order for them to “save face” , as in:

“See, WE made it so, by “exiling /excluding him, and the “threat” of losing titles enough of a “punishment” for Harry to “come to heel” and not publish ANY new revelations! It’s all OUR doing! He’s not adding because of OUR stance!”.

      Harry’s like: “Whatever…”

    • Anonymous says:

If there are no new chapters, a paperback version makes zero sense. I get that contract-wise, a paperback is part of the deal when a novel/memoir is published, but if you have no updated stuff to add, why the worry? Also, The publisher and Harry are still making tons of money from the hardback, so this pointless.

Unless the denial is aimed to keep the noise from the hateful British tabloid press at a distance, from now til the release date? We’ll see.

      • Kkat says:

Paperbacks are cheaper for us people who are broke, that’s a good reason

      • Agreatreckoning says:

While I would love new chapters and updated stuff, it’s par for the course, unless you’re member of the royal rota that churns out books that are basically retreads of BM points. Not all hardcover books (whether fiction or non-fiction) go to paperback with new chapters. RR’s are big on this because their dumpster hardcovers don’t sell like SPARE did. Trix are for kids.

Penguin Random House is willing to take the risk. lol (not a risk) they’ve made their money.

The BM is squawking because they might not have new info to pretend they’re “offended” about.

SPARE wasn’t ‘vitriolic’ at all. SPARE gave more grace than I would have. LOL. The BM are either completely illiterate or have never read any of J.R.M’s previous ghostwriting memoirs. Even his own. Which is awesome.

    • bisynaptic says:

Agreed. It would be very disappointing if there were no new material. Also, he’d be leaving money on the table.

  2. sunnyside up says:

Harry did say ages ago that he wasn’t going to say any more.

    • Julia says:

Harry and Meghan have been telling us since 2022 that the documentary and Spare were the last look back projects. Why are people surprised by this news?

      • sunnyside up says:

I don’t think they are the DM loves to make up articles to gain clicks, and pretending that there might be more was good clickbait. Becky is being disingenuous.

    • Dee(2) says:

Yeah they called them their look back projects, and other than Will Reeve asking him directly about his father’s cancer diagnosis at Whistler, and Jane Pauley referencing the Oprah interview to address Meghan’s discussion of suicidal ideation in reference to The Parents’ Network neither has really said anything about the family in years. Harry is absolutely still focused on the media side of it, but I think he’s gotten to the it is what it is part for his family. Meghan has CLEARLY been done for years and is polite in public when she needs to be.

    • equality says:

I think the actual language was that they had “moved away” from look back projects. That’s not a promise to never move back to them, especially for Meghan who is still processing the trauma.

      • Julia says:

To me that means not to expect any tell all books or interviews for years. Doesn’t mean they will never revisit the events of 2018/19 but we shouldn’t expect anything in the near future.

  3. Nutella toast says:

Ummmm…I don’t see this as a reason to be relieved. I see booked #2 called, “Spared”, and I see it getting published after charles passes and William ascends. That way Harry doesnt “hurt” his Pa more but William is held up to the light. For the good of the country Harry loves, or just a book about being a Pa himself. I don’t think he will rehash his moms death or Meghan’s difficult times with the palace.

  4. Steph says:

Not adding anything new is smart IMO. It’s a safety net for if the RFs dream comes true and he falls in hard times financially. He can write a second book.

  5. Ginger says:

Obama recently released his memoir in paperback and no new chapters were added. Becky recently proclaimed Harry wouldn’t release the paperback because he was ashamed of his book, this idiot knows nothing. He added a chapter to the hardback after the Queen died so maybe that’s why this version won’t have additional chapters.

    • Becks1 says:

I was in our local bookstore this weekend and saw Obama’s in paperback and immediately thought “I wonder when Harry’s is coming out.” His memoir literally just came out in paperback and it was released, what, a year or two before Harry’s?

I don’t think right now Harry feels the need to add more. The way Spare ended up working out, with the Queen’s death being included – it felt like there was closure there. It was the final chapter – literally – in Harry’s life as The Spare. he has moved on. People mistake his lawsuits for not moving on, but again….that’s a mistake.

    • Amy Bee says:

@Ginger: You make a good point about the additional chapter about the Queen’s death possibily being the reason why there won’t a new chapter in the paperback version. It also shows that the press was wrong when they said that the book was delayed because Harry was having second thoughts about the book after the Queen died. The real story was Harry wanted to include a chapter on the Queen’s death.

  6. Magdalena says:

They think if they keep using the word “vitriolic” to describe the book and the interview it will miraculously be seen in the most negative light despite its global success and the positive reactions which Harry has received wherever he has gone since publication. There wasn’t a single vitriolic word in the book, despite my own wishes. He did far more damage to them by remaining positive and letting the usual suspects reveal themselves for what they are.

  7. Feebee says:

He’s had a lot happen in the past 18 months so an update chapter would have been nice. Maybe a little more incentivizing for those who already have the original hardcover, but it is what it is.

I really hope he’ll do another book once his tabloid court cases are put to bed and the best bits of those other 400 pages in the vault probably after Charles passes. It’ll annoy TF out of William and I think possibly there’s a little piece of Harry that won’t mind that.

    • Agreatreckoning says:

My petty side wants all of that. I love how they’re handling things moving forward. Aspirations. I’m kind of at the point where I don’t want to know how much horribly H(Meghan especially were treated). I would love secret tapes to be revealed.

That H&M move forward, while the BM/BRF live in backassward, gives me comfort in what a sh*tshow is happening over the pond and with THAT family.

  8. Jais says:

The whole idea that the lack of new chapters is a peace offering from Harry to the RF is eye-rolling. They just have to center themselves.

    • Anonymous says:

Or part of reconcile, don’t reconcile, reconcile, keep the clicks coming, We have had this week the church persuading the King to reconcile but as head on the Church of England he should have known about the teachings of Jesus and followed them.

  9. Neeve says:

I thought the whole point of a paperback was new chapters other wise what is the appeal?

    • Julia says:

Popular books are almost always released in paperback because some people prefer that format.

    • Mimi says:

It’s cheaper to buy for those people who may want a hard copy (not digital) but don’t want to pay double for the hardcover.

    • Becks1 says:

Honestly, it wasn’t until very recently that I learned paperbacks sometimes have new chapters.

I think generally speaking the appeal is that paperbacks tend to be cheaper and are easier to carry around or pack when traveling.

      • Convict says:

It’s usually the case, but not always the case, that paperback is cheaper. We’ll see on this one. I doubt it will be much cheaper, but the appeal may be that it’s lighter to carry.

    • equality says:

Personal preference. If it were only for books added to no fiction books would come out in paperback.

    • Agreatreckoning says:

@Neeve, curious, what is the basis on your comment? There are a number of memoirs that have been released in paperback without new/updated chapters. IF your focused on memoirs.

Hey, I have J.R. Moehringer’s book in paperback, one of my siblings has it in hardcover. Neither of us questioned the point. We understood that the book was well worth reading.

As SPARE is. Please, please, please BM, whine about SPARE coming out in paperback during Chuckles tour. It might actually give attention to boring sh*t.

  10. Walking the Walk says:

Why do people still want Harry to go after his father/family when it’s obvious that’s not what he wants?

Spare was really good, but I didn’t need new chapters for it. It’s obvious he and Meghan have moved on. His family, not so much.

    • Dee(2) says:

Because some people have made Harry and Meghan avatars for larger systemic Injustice and get angry when they don’t react in the way that they want them to. But I agree you can’t be mad at the British media for writing stories every single day about them and make fun of William for his weekly Daily beast column and then also not understand why Harry doesn’t want to add chapters to Spare.

  11. Afken says:

“Vitriolic” these people did not read the book at all. Or they think that anything less than a**-kissing is vitriol. Embarrassing

    • Agnes says:

That’s exactly it, anything less than sycophancy is betrayal to those inbred creeps. I wish Harry would quit “going high” and show them what vitriol really is in Spare 2.

  12. Monika says:

“…. Royal Family is likely to breathe a sigh of relief…” What are they so worried about?

    • Advisor2U says:

No, she means the likes of herself and the other tabloid hacks, are scared that any extra chapters to SPARE could debunck more of their years-long told/sold lies about Prince Harry (and Meghan). The royals may be too, but the UK-paper editors and the sycophants, who call themselves journalists and royal experts, biographers and commentators, are the most scared when Harry ‘speaks’.

  13. Maxine Branch says:

I have preordered the softcover book and will be putting the hardcover book in a safe space at home. Would not bother me as much it’s the softcover got damaged in handling.

  14. Libra says:

“To the royal family’s great relief “. No new chapters. That says it all, doesn’t it. They might as well come right out and say that Harry could divulge much, much more and they are waiting for the other royal shoe to drop.

    • Anna says:

Yes, they are telling on themselves. I am glad Harry is still keeping a lot to himself, I hope leftovers are going to bed every night thinking if and when he’s going to tell more.

  15. Amy Bee says:

Becky went on record stating that a paperback version wasn’t forthcoming so where’s the part in her piece where she admits that she was wrong? Harry and Meghan have both said that they’re done with the look back projects and alot of best-selling books don’t get revised for the paperback edition. Any new information about Harry will found out in the court cases. I think the book and the docuseries are good companion pieces. A lot of people prefer paperback versions of books so I think the book will do well. It’s good to see the British press finally admit that the book was a huge success but the paperback version is not an olive branch as Becky English is desperate for it to be. Harry is continuing with his court cases and the family refuses to take responsibility for what they did to Harry and Meghan.

  16. Scooby Gang says:

My hope is that a new audience buys the paperback version like crazy… those who more recently came to know about Harry through high-profile events like the ESPY’s, Nigeria and Colombia trips, etc.

And I agree with fellow commentors… the RF is terrified of what H knows and whether he’ll share it. That says it all.

  17. tamsin says:

What a vitriolic article. As they say, every allegation is a confession. Some words to describe the dangerous bilge the tabloids put out: vitriolic, sycophantic, patronizing, classist, self-revealing racist, bitchy, and dangerous, stochastic pieces of terrorism. And a quote from Voltaire to end the rant, “Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.”

  18. Saucy&Sassy says:

I don’t know that King Snubby will be travelling to Australia in October. He just doesn’t look all that well. Having said that, it’s up to the bm whether Harry’s paperback will upstage his Dad. If that’s what the bm writes about, that’s what will become news. Here’s an idea: Write about King Snubby’s tour and don’t say anything about Harry, Meghan, the kids or the book. Just focus on King Snubby. Fixed it for you.

    • sunnyside up says:

      Love it.

    • Nanea says:

King Snubby and Queen Side Piece don’t bring clicks/money though. Neither do the Wailses, or anyone else for that matter.

So it’s H&M (and A+L) till the end of time, no matter what they do or don’t do.

  19. Lucy says:

“a somewhat unusual move for an international bestseller” = tell me you don’t know anything about publishing without telling me you don’t know anything about publishing

  20. Julie says:

Lucy, you’re totally right. They are completely ignorant of publishing. Harry would have nothing to do with when PRH releases the book so it wasn’t planned to conflict with the King’s trip.

The way Becky English forgets that Charles wrote a tell-all, vitriolic memoir attacking his parents is something.

    • sunnyside up says:

      Convenient absent mindlessness.

    • Jenna says:

      THANK YOU!!

I love how everyone has conveniently forgotten the book where King Charles put the Queen on blast for being an absentee mother. Not to mention, he describes Phillip as cruel and not meeting his emotional needs.

I do believe CHARLES is “the most high profile family member to ever ‘kiss and tell’ on the monarchy.” CHARLES.

    • Convict says:

They also conveniently forget when they are maliciously criticising Harry for his lawsuits, that W&K sued in a foreign jurisdiction (to avoid backlash), having a magazine closed down and people fired. I believe there were also threats of criminal proceedings by the French authorities. W&K never cared about the consequences, or their own foolishness, as to Kate doing her usual flashing of her nether regions in public.
