Donald Trump & Kamala Harris’s campaigns are arguing about hot mics at the debate

The next big political event is the September 10th presidential debate on ABC. In recent days, Donald Trump has been making some noise about how he might pull out of it, because he’s nothing but a senile coward. Behind-the-scenes, both campaigns have been negotiating the debate rules while Trump prevaricates. One of the rules being debated is whether both candidates’ microphones should be left on (“hot”) throughout the debate, rather than muted for one as the other speaks. President Biden wanted the mics muted, likely because Trump knew he could get under Biden’s skin by interrupting him. Kamala Harris is a different ball game. She knows that Trump is more likely to sound like a belligerent, senile Nazi if they’re both given hot mics throughout the debate.

With just 15 days left until the scheduled Sept. 10 presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, negotiations between their two campaigns have hit an impasse over whether the candidates’ microphones will be muted when it is not their turn to speak, according to four people familiar with the issue.

In June, President Joe Biden’s campaign came to an agreement with Trump’s: There would be two debates — CNN’s on June 27 and ABC’s on Sept. 10 — conducted by mutually negotiated rules. One of the Biden team’s demands — which the Trump team agreed to — was that microphones “will be muted throughout the debate except for the candidate whose turn it is to speak,” as CNN announced on June 15. But Biden is no longer running for president. And Harris’ campaign wants the microphones to be hot at all times during the ABC debate — as has historically been the case at presidential debates.

“We have told ABC and other networks seeking to host a possible October debate that we believe both candidates’ mics should be live throughout the full broadcast,” Brian Fallon, the Harris campaign’s senior adviser for communications, tells POLITICO. “Our understanding is that Trump’s handlers prefer the muted microphone because they don’t think their candidate can act presidential for 90 minutes on his own. We suspect Trump’s team has not even told their boss about this dispute because it would be too embarrassing to admit they don’t think he can handle himself against Vice President Harris without the benefit of a mute button.”

Privately, the veep’s team believes that Harris can get Trump to lose his cool and say something impolitic on mic. “She’s more than happy to have exchanges with him if he tries to interrupt her,” one person familiar with the negotiations tells Playbook. “And given how shook he seems by her, he’s very prone to having intemperate outbursts and … I think the campaign would want viewers to hear [that].”

Trump later told reporters Monday that he hoped to move forward with the same rules as the June debate, but “it doesn’t matter to me, I’d rather have it probably on…But the agreement was that it would be the same as it was last time. In that case, it was muted,” Trump told reporters at a stop in Northern Virginia. “I didn’t like it the last time but it worked out fine. I mean, ask Biden how it worked out — it was fine. And I think it should be the same.”

If nothing else, I love how Kamala Harris and her campaign are perfectly willing to get in Trump’s face about this. They’re not being passive at all, they’re pushing Trump and his people around. My thing is that the debate is going to be a sh-tshow no matter what. Yes, Kamala Harris is a tough prosecutor and she knows how to get in Trump’s face and unnerve him. But this hot-mic issue is just a reminder that Trump is awful and he’ll do and say horrible sh-t in the debate and his cult members will still support him.

This is how the Harris campaign is getting in Trump’s face too. The chicken sounds… lmao.

There is another reason KH wants hot mics through out the debate. She doesn’t just want Trump’s mic open. She wants her own mic hot so she can fact check him as he speaks. That is the only way to effectively fact check his fire hose of lies. The campaign made a statement yesterday which got little coverage: “She is prepared to fact check him in real time.” Otherwise, she would have to use up her own time correcting the record.

Was about to say the same thing. Literally every network has shown that they cannot be trusted to call him out. Their reluctance, or outright refusal, to do so is f–king infuriating and alarming. It’s why, despite KH absolutely SOARING in virtually every poll, supporting her still often feels like a lonely fight.

    • Mimi says:

That makes so much more sense than she just wants him to sound impolitic. We already know he’s an ass, but his Magats will still support him no matter what he says. Fact checking in real time is much better.

    • seraphina says:

Yes, that also makes sense. Fact checking in real time and allowing him to make himself look like the fool. Win-win.

  2. Pinkosaurus says:

I love how the Harris campaign always throws this nonsense back at Trump and then he’s asked about it in interviews. Send the (racist, false, hateful) awkward back to sender!

I do want VP Harris running a real-time fact check from stage! The networks are terrible at it but I’m sure she can do better.

  3. seraphina says:

There is a clip on Twitter of him stating (to the media) that he doesn’t mind a hot mic (contradicting what his handlers want) which now means he has agreed with Harris’ camp. Harris checkmated him.

I hope that those of who can are helping where we can. Elon’s PAC is pumping money into Ohio, that could mess with Sherrod Brown. We NEED Sherrod to win. These billionaires are doing shit to undermine our democracy, and we have to be proactive like the Harris- Walz campaign has been.

  5. Leigh_S says:

The chicken sounds, MY GOD, the chicken sounds!
    I’m cackling over here.

Hot mic for the win. He likes to talk and interrupt? Let him and let Kamala fact check in real time. FAFO

    • Mimi says:

My only concern is that she will spend the debate being on the defensive and never get her positions out. Silencing him until it’s his time to speak will likely be the only way that she will be able to get substantive answers out.

    • Tisme says:

      LOL…agreed!

    • SIde Eye says:

LOL I want whoever is running the Harris Campaign’s social media account to run my life. It is Campbell Soup clapback at homophobia epic level of trolling. I am here for it! The Wendy’s, Harris Campaign, and Campbell Soup social medias are my favorite.

Trump looks like death. Those are some tiny hands in that header pic.

    • BeanieBean says:

      And the chicken emoji!!!!

  6. Agnes says:

Trump makes every.single.thing a shitshow about HIM. OMG, please. He has to be retired to the dustbin of history. Kamala is definitely the right person to take his evil nonsense on.

  7. Feeshalori says:

That was my thought as well, Kamala wants a hot mic to nip this maniac’s lies in the bud as soon as they start spewing from his hateful mouth.

  8. SarahLee says:

Yes, his cult members will support him. But what we want is for him to lose what is left of the sane GOP and independents. We want people to be reminded of what they’re signing up for 4 years of if they vote for Trump.

  9. Proud Mary says:

There’s no debate over the issue. His babysitters, also known as his campaign, did not bother telling him that, knowing what an erratic, derange crybaby he is, they were trying to protect him by opting for a mute mike. Diaper Don fell for the Harris Campaign trolling, by trying to prove that he’s not a crybaby, and therefore sided with her campaign, against his own campaign. That’s it.

  10. Ocho says:

The PodSaveAmerica guys quoted Biden as saying Trump was muttering while Biden was speaking and he found it distracting. Biden could hear it even if it wasn’t picked up by mics. Air all the ravings, mutterings and interruptions. Most of the people reading here are completely aware of Trump’s chaos and unprofessionalism. This is for the 1% wafflers who could sway the election. It is frightening that the results are still a toss of the coin.

  11. trillion says:

If he goes through with the debate, he will likely be on some kind of calming drug. I say this because he accused Biden of planning to do this prior to the last debate and baseless accusations are usually admissions.

  12. Jais says:

I’m kind of dreading the debate. Assuming it happens. I just can’t listen to that man. He’s so gross and offensive and it makes me ill to think of KH even having to breathe the same air as him. I know she’ll do well but bleh.

    • Abby says:

I don’t think I can watch it live. Debates stress me out–I hate the conflict. I couldn’t watch Biden and Trump’s last debate. The only one I’ve been able to watch recently was Harris and Pence, the one with “I’m Speaking” and THE FLY. I also cannot listen to Trump, not his words, not his voice.

I really want to watch this though. I want her to really come after him. So I might have to white knuckle it.

  13. Rapunzel says:

He will not debate her. If this isn’t enough to stop it, he’ll maybe come up with some “security issue”– notice there was talk of some security danger for his recent border visit, that afaik never went anywhere. He might also develop a case of COVID or something that disappears faster than his that Kotex he had on his ear for the RNC.

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Mmhmm, this is my thinking. I don’t see it happening, but I’d love to be wrong. Possible real time fact-check? I’d even try to stomach it.

  14. MissMarirose says:

” We suspect Trump’s team has not even told their boss about this dispute because it would be too embarrassing to admit they don’t think he can handle himself against Vice President Harris without the benefit of a mute button.”

LMAO. I love how they’re baiting Trump.

  15. AmyB says:

The decision to mute the mics in the last debate between Biden and Trump was understandable, given the chaotic nature of their 2020 debate. That event was a complete trainwreck and dumpster fire, so embarrassing that even the moderator, Chris Wallace, struggled to maintain control over the discussion. The issue remains with Trump disseminating pathological lie after lie every time he speaks, and the moderators are unable (and unwilling in real-time) to verify and fact-check all his deceptive statements and propaganda. Kamala Harris is capable of doing this (Biden was not) which is exactly why she wants the mics hot.

There NEEDS to be fact-checking in these debates in real-time and not the day after. Not every person tuning in is as well versed in policy so accurate and truthful facts must be presented – for BOTH sides.

  16. Booboochile says:

The chicken though…. ahahaha hahaha 😂😂😂😂

  17. Bad Janet says:

That’s a very bad strategy. How did that work for Hillary? He looked like a complete buffon against her and people still ate it up. A hot mike means he will NEVER shut up and Kamala won’t be able to get a word in over him, cause that’s his strategy – lie and name calling over someone talking facts, and MAGA Republicans LIKE IT. Even if she pushes back harder than Hillary, he will talk incessantly over Kamala because he has absolutely no shame. We all know how he sees women as things to be dominated.

  18. Ed says:

I will say not really good at all
