Angelina Jolie wore Tamara Ralph & wept during the 8-minute ovation in Venice

Hands on your knees, Angelina Jolie! Angelina stole the show and perhaps the hearts of all Italians last night in Venice. Pablo Larrain’s Maria got its splashy Venice Film Festival premiere on the second night, and the reception was rapturous. Every critic who watched the screening has raved about the film and Angelina’s performance. If the critics have their way, she will be guaranteed an Oscar nomination and she’s likely the front-runner to win. They’re calling it a career-best performance from Jolie. They’re saying she’s the only one who could have played Maria Callas. They’re saying Angelina is one of the few movie stars left in the world.

Angelina’s look at the premiere was dramatic… for beige. Truly, the most dramatic beige I’ve ever seen. Angelina’s gown is a custom look from Tamara Ralph, one half of Ralph & Russo. Jolie used to wear a lot of Ralph & Russo back in the day, and I kind of love that she went back to Tamara Ralph. She paired the gown with a faux fur stole and Cartier jewelry. Earlier in the day, she wore a Cartier brooch, a vintage piece which once belonged to Maria Callas. Perhaps her brooch at the premiere also had a Callas connection. I would assume that Angelina’s blood-red lipstick is courtesy of Tom Ford Beauty, since she recently became the face of the beauty company.

After the premiere, Angelina and Pablo Larrain received an eight-minute standing ovation. Angelina cried, she was so moved by the reception. The critics have been moved as well – I’ve seen a couple of critics admit to weeping at parts of the movie. Basically, Angelina has fully achieved goddess status this year. Italians camped out overnight for a glimpse of her. One man sang in Italian to her at the photocall. Journalists were asking for her autograph. One of her fans has brittle-bone disease and he asked to be transported by gurney to the premiere so he could possibly meet Jolie. She dutifully stopped, knelt down and spoke to him. She really is Saint Angelina now.

Well, those lips stood out against the beige so Tom Ford made the right choice in getting her to rep the lipstick😂 She was lovely and glam.

    • Jais says:

      Ooos! Signed, Jais.

    • StillDouchesOfCambridge says:

She looked fabulous. Very moving to see all this love for her. Angelina is my queen.
Everyone can react as they feel, but I also feel robot kkkhate at wimbledon showing up after months out, should have been moved this way, instead, nope, it was just like a breakfast out in a dress. That kind of thing makes me believe she was out for a facelift instead.

    • Lizzie says:

      Beautiful and glamorous.

    • Carmen says:

She is drop-dead beautiful but the blond hair completely washes her out and makes her look ten years older.

    • Stay34 says:

It was actually 10 minutes standing ovation the movie got

  2. Pinkosaurus says:

Oh my, she looks like an angel with her fan. This is all just the best. I’m really looking forward to seeing this movie.

    • Christine says:

She really does look like an angel. Wow.

    • fishface says:

Can you imagine the joy she brought to him. I love that she kneeled down like this instead of just briefly stopping. I admire her so much.

  3. Ohwell says:

Too washed out. She wore a similar look to Cannes many moons ago and looked much better. The blonde hair makes her looks sickly.

    • Cali says:

I agree that I wasn’t a fan of the blonde hair but still thought she looked fabulous.

    • Hemia says:

I feel like that Angelina might have health issues. So I am not comfortable with comments about her scrawny arms, vains, bones.

    • Louise says:

Oh for pete’s sake. Get a life if someone’s elbows offend you so much that they MUST be covered. Go touch grass or something. Jeebuz.

    • LadyMTL says:

I actually like the dress itself but I do wish that they had gone with a darker shade. It’s too close to her actual skin tone, IMHO. (I’m picturing it in a rich brown and it’s much nicer.)

    • j says:

she is beautiful but very thin and looks ill

    • Ajqueen says:

Does no one understand how grey hair works anymore???
She is over 40 and maybe doesn’t want to commit to once a month salon visits to touch up her roots. Ashy blonde is so much easier than rich brown. She can be blonde if she wants. I personally am crossing my fingers she does a grey mullet faux-hawk thing 🤞🤞🤞 You’re still punk AJ!

    • Emme says:

      @Ohwell. I commented this earlier but it wasn’t printed….
I agree with you. This sad beige-coloured frock and hair colour washes out a stunningly beautiful woman. Bright jewel colours and her rich, heathy-looking, shiny brunette hair looks best on her.

And, much as I adore Angelina, her Achilles heel is her scrawny elbows. Dresses that don’t emphasise them look gorgeous on her.

  4. Mrs. Smith says:

What a triumph for Angelina!! Good for her!

  5. Clove says:

When I saw the young lady say to her, “you deserve it”’, I teared up. She really is the last of what is known as a movie star
The way that she commanded the carpet was brilliant.
I loved her look and I’m glad she iwore Tamara Ralph. I’ve been a fan since Gia and I can’t wait to see this movie.

    • Mireille says:

It was sweet to see her cry after someone said that. I keep thinking about what she’s been through in the last years dealing with her ex and the tab media hating, judging her. Here she’s surrounded by people who appreciate her talent and efforts.

    • Sophie says:

Truly, one of the last movie stars!

    • CruzMom says:

She may truly be the last great Movie Star. We still have Julia, Cate, etc., but Angelina almost seems like she is from a different era. Like one where, 100 years from now, kids will have posters of her, her clothes will be in museums, and she’ll still be a muse and inspiration for people around the world (a la Marilyn Monroe).

  6. Mireille says:

She’s genuinely sweet and appreciative of her fans. I remember the one incident in NYC when a fan was overwhelmed by a crowd trying to get an autograph from Angelina. Angie went over to see if she was OK, bent down, gave her an autograph and took a selfie with her. I love this look BTW. Not always a fan of beige, but damn does Angie pull it off here. And to top that, those red lips with THAT FACE. Looking forward to seeing this film.

  7. Cali says:

Living well is the best revenge.
She conquered Venice, she looked amazing, and they loved her performance.
So delicious that she is the super movie star adored by all and Wolfs went straight to streaming.
    Karma.

    • ravensdaughter says:

One of my mom’s favorite sayings (RIP, Helen), and yes, this is the perfect example of that particular kind of revenge. How foolish Brad Pitt will look by comparison, since half the time he dresses like a frat boy on vacation.

Also, Pax must be on the mend, or she would not have gone to Italy.

  8. North of Boston says:

I remember years ago when i was working in an abusive situation, for a horrible boss, and their horrible boss. So bad I gave my notice after just 2 months and with no new job lined up. The day after I gave my notice, several co-workers each took me aside and praised my work, said I’d deserved so much better, and they were glad I was out of there even though they’d miss me. And then my old boss called to check in, wish me well and let me know he was keeping his eye out for opportunities for me*

I’m usually super duper composed at work, even at that job with all the ish raining down on me. But having people speak to me with kindness, and acknowledging that I was ‘worthy’, they appreciated what I’d done, and that I deserved good things reduced me to tears every time – good tears, healing tears – because I was so wounded and raw from being in an abusive situation, it was like a glimmer of hope and safety.

Angelina’s situation was SO much worse. I can totally see how someone sharing their support, admiration for her work brought the tears.

    * he did, and I had a new, better job within a couple of weeks.

    • SIde Eye says:

So sorry you went through that. I’ve been in that exact situation you just described. So I completely understand. I quit too without any other job lined up.

  9. Nanea says:

I am so happy for Angelina, and relieved at the same time, that “Maria” seems such a rousing success.

As to the dress, I like that it contrasts the red carpet so well, and the lipstick is a perfect choice.

Early today I read a 4 ☆ review in the Guardian, and the critic’s final sentence is “But it ground me down, won me over and by the closing credits, God help us, I was hoping for an encore.”
    https://www.theguardian.com/film/article/2024/aug/29/maria-review-callas-angelina-jolie-pablo-larrain-paris

One couldn’t wish for more, I think.

  10. ArtHistorian says:

She looks beautiful, the dress and the entire look is beautiful – even if I wish it wasn’t so beige in colour.

I am glad that her talent is acknowledged, and she deserves the best after all those long years of abuse.

I am really excited to watch this movie. I loved Jackie and while Spencer was a bit uneven, I did dig the atmosphere of creepy horror, which seem so appropriate for the Windsors. I have put Neruda on my to watch list as well.

  11. SIde Eye says:

So thrilled for her. She looked amazing. I love that the stole is faux fur. She really is the last movie star. I cannot wait to see this film.

  12. Amy Bee says:

Angelina was always a goddess to me.

  13. Aerie says:

I’m glad the film was well received and hope she has a good awards season. More importantly, I wish people would keep the focus solely on the movie, her performance, and any red carpet appearances. Her personal life needn’t be mentioned in every article or comment.

  14. Neeve says:

I am guessing since it’s an Oscar bait movie it will be drama, well I have never enjoyed her dramatic work that much ,hope this is worth it.

    • NickiT says:

The reviews are pretty mixed, tbh. Some nice things to say but not full-on
      raves.

      • Granger says:

I love Angelina, but even I can see there are mixed reviews out there, and not everyone is raving. I read three reviews this morning that honestly, barely mentioned her, and focused instead on the film as a whole. Still… she deserved that standing ovation, because she is a good actor and an amazing human being, and it’s nice to see people supporting her instead of her stupid ex-husband.

      • Facts says:

Nick the reviews are somewhat mixed on the scriptwriting and directing since some are not a fan of Pablo takes on these women. They rave about her performance and how she basically is saving the film. So (rolls eyes)! It’s ok

  15. blue says:

I’m pleased for her accolades & look forward to seeing the movie.
The blond-on-beige with a fake fur stole in summer is a fashion flop. Venice is hot now. If she must cover her shoulders, a sheer silk is more season-appropriate. Colorful clothing and either upswept or curled hair are far more flattering to her.

  16. Roo says:

I wish the very best for her, and I hope this year is a triumphant and joyful one for her and her children.

  17. Agnes says:

She’s a goddess, that gown is unbelievably gorgeous. The perfect foil for her red lipstick, what an advertisement. I can’t wait to watch the movie!

  18. Eleonor says:

    Why the fur?
I know it’s fake but why.

  19. Jess says:

I normally hate beige looks but this is amazing. The non color lets the cut and the gorgeous shrug and her beautiful face stand out. It’s perfect. And yes, I love all of this for her after what sh$tty pitty has put her through.

    • Kopfsalat says:

“Truly, the most dramatic beige I’ve ever seen.” The sentence should be an oxymoron but it isn’t. It truly is a dramatic and stunning look. The bold lip and Angelina’s incredible face help, of course. She honestly looks breathtaking.

  20. Ameerah M says:

Love her so much. She looked like a goddess and I hope she gets another Oscar nom from this. She deserves it and so much more. And I love the bold red lip against the beige. It’s so striking.

  21. Jay says:

I love the golden beige and the cut of this dress, plus the red lip! Gorgeous. Like many of you here in the comments, I am not feeling this ashy blonde colour on her hair.

  22. Kitten says:

I absolutely LOVE the dress–the faux fur, the beige color, the cut, texture of the fabric–all of it. She looks like the radiant goddess she is.

  23. Grant says:

The reviews for the movie are not raves, they are quite mixed. I bet Angelina will get an Oscar nomination though, in line with Natalie Portman in Jackie and Kristen Stewart in Spencer. I’m very excited to see the movie though, I think Maria Callas was an interesting person and I’m interested to see how her rise to fame, weight loss, career decline, etc. are portrayed on screen.

I love her dress here, much better than the horrible YSL frock from yesterday. The blonde hair is not good, just my opinion!

  24. Bev says:

    Take that, Brad.

  25. JJ says:

I absolutely adore Angelina Jolie and I love this for her! She is a fantastic actress and I hope she wins every award possible for this. Side note: Is it me or are Angleina’s and Meghan Markle’s styles quite similar? Not particularly with this outfit but in outfits we see Angelina wearing around town, arriving at the airport in Venice etc.

  26. therese says:

Angelina looks lovely here. Love the red lips, but I always love her in red lips. She is glamorous, and very kind and sweet. The picture of her kneeling by her fan got me. I think she is a very good actress, and I am so pleased that she is feted, and I also wonder if her adulation is also the Italian’s way of showing their support for all she has gone through.

  27. Amberil says:

I’m so happy and touched by her. She deserves this, the raves and adoration, the public embracing her comeback and rooting for her. I love this for her. She’s been through so much

  28. Keaton says:

She is the only entertainer I unapologetically stan. I’m so happy she’s getting some well deserved accolades.

  29. CreoleTomato says:

She’s a natural blonde, who can rock blonde, brunette, or beige imo. Just gorgeous!
