Lady Gaga & Joaquin Phoenix turned on the charm for the ‘Joker’ photocall in Venice

Here are some photos of Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix at the Venice Film Festival, doing the photocall for Joker: Folie a Deux. This is the sequel to the “surprise hit” for which Joaquin won a Best Actor Oscar. For that. For playing a 1970s Joker with significant mental health issues. It left me cold, but whatever. The sequel will show more of Joaquin’s Joker crashing out and standing trial for all of the murders. He’s placed in Arkham alongside Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn. They fall in love, I guess.

Gaga went through a quiet period for the past year, where she was working and recording and not being very public with anything. She’s engaged, but she has a bad picker and who knows if this guy will last. She has bleached eyebrows now. She wore a jaunty beret to the photocall and she seemed to have a sweet relationship with Joaquin, who can be very prickly during promotional tours and around some of his costars. But Joaquin surprised me by looking clean and fresh and turning on the smile and the charm. He calls her “Stefani” btw. That’s her real name, but I would have thought that most people would still call her Gaga. She might introduce herself to people as Stefani though.

This is Joaquin’s first public appearance since he backed out of that film which he developed with Todd Haynes, a gay, period drama. Joaquin still hasn’t been sued over it, and there’s the sense that Hollywood studios are waiting to see what happens with Joker. Joaquin was asked about the situation a few times in the press conference but he declined to comment. He did talk about losing weight (again) for the role, and how Gaga wanted to sing live as they filmed so that’s how they did it.

I am disappointed it appears Harley will be just another mental patient, as opposed to a learned psychiatrist whose twisted relationship with him (and comic book worthy accident) corrupts her. I loved that she was a fully realized, educated woman going into her interactions with the Joker and the psychatrist/mental patient angle creates an interesting, twisted push and pull that her simply being an intriguing fellow patient doesn’t. Maybe I’ll be wrong and they can thread the needle, but I’ll be disappointed if her education, wit, and intelligence, and background as a medical doctor, is merely a throwaway comment when someone discusses her backstory.

Not only that but this Joker isn’t even a criminal mastermind so I don’t even know why we care about him since all of it is related to Batman material in name only. Creepy incel cash grab imo.

    Gaga looks pretty.

I can’t get behind the bleached eyebrows. I like the dress a lot though. Actually, the dress I love. Minus the beret though. And no surprise to Joaquin’s no comment. I’m kind of surprised people even tried asking though.

I love the dress. Not the eyebrows. As someone who naturally has very very light eyebrows, if I want them to show up in pictures, I have to draw them in. It’s another thing added to the morning routine (I don’t bother with it most days)

I hate – HATE – those bleached eyebrows. They are just not a good look for her. I’m also not excited for this movie. The Harley/Joker relationship is just too much for me.

  5. Courtney says:

It looks like her eyebrows jumped over to his face. 😀

He looks cleaned up and not as if he’s fresh off a five-day bender, for once. Good for him. And he always loves his leading ladies (remember his crush on Reese Witherspoon?) so this means we should get a great performance from him.

Gaga on the other hand…I’m still not convinced she has actual acting talent. I’m a huge fan of her music but I don’t think she really gets being a character as opposed to playing for the camera, just like Madonna. We’ll have to see!

Let the dual annoying Oscar campaign begins !

  8. Kirsten says:

They both look great here. The first movie was so dark and intense I have zero idea how this is a musical, but I’m excited for it — Phoenix was phenomenal in Joker.

Joaquin’s looks like he rolled out of bed forgot he was going to a photocall and threw on clothes he found on the floor.
